Robinhood Moves Toward Weekend Stock and ETF Trading
Cryptocurrency markets operate around the clock every day of the year, increasing pressure on the U.S. stock market’s traditional weekday schedule. Although brokerages and alternative trading systems have expanded equity trading beyond the standard 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. session, stock markets remain more limited than crypto markets.
The New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq have both filed plans to expand their trading hours. Robinhood introduced its 24 Hour Market in 2023, but that service currently pauses during weekends. The company now plans to address that gap by offering a selection of stocks and exchange-traded funds on Saturdays and Sundays through Bruce ATS, an alternative trading system.
“More assets, and then more hours,” Fatehpuria said, describing Robinhood’s strategy.
Robinhood Expands Its Trading Platform Beyond Market Hours
Weekend access would extend Robinhood’s effort to make stock trading available beyond the traditional exchange schedule. The planned service would focus on a selection of stocks and ETFs rather than the entire equity market, with Bruce ATS providing the alternative trading system infrastructure.
The move reflects a broader shift in how brokerages and trading venues are approaching market access. While crypto trading has established a continuous, seven-day model, major U.S. equity markets are still structured around weekday sessions. Robinhood’s weekend offering would further narrow that difference for customers using its platform.
Robinhood Agents Will Use AI for Market Monitoring and Trading
Robinhood is also pursuing a more significant change to the traditional brokerage model through Robinhood Agents, which the trading platform announced earlier this year. Customers will be able to create an AI agent within the Robinhood app, choose a model from OpenAI or Anthropic, and connect the agent to a separate trading account.
The agent will be able to analyze markets, create watchlists and trade stocks, options and crypto. Robinhood also plans to let the agent perform these activities repeatedly without requiring customers to submit a new prompt each time.
A feature called Loops will allow customers to provide standing instructions. Under those instructions, an agent can monitor markets and execute a trading strategy when specified conditions occur.
Why This Matters
Robinhood’s plans show how trading platforms are combining longer market access with automated tools. Weekend trading through Bruce ATS would give customers access to selected stocks and ETFs when traditional U.S. equity markets are closed, while Robinhood Agents would introduce AI-driven market analysis and automated execution within a separate trading account.
Together, the initiatives point to two changes in retail investing: broader availability of trading opportunities and greater use of persistent, instruction-based automation. The developments also come as the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq pursue their own efforts to expand trading hours.
