    Former Glassboro standout Kenny Smith Jr. recorded two consecutive runs to begin Monmouth’s third drive and picked up the Hawks’ first down. Monmouth benefited from a pass interference call, but the offense continued to struggle to establish a rhythm.

    The new-look offensive line had a difficult start, with penalties and execution problems affecting both pass protection and the running game. Monmouth was forced to punt again.

    Monmouth forces a punt as pass rush shines

    Although Tennessee Tech’s drive was extended by an initial pass interference penalty, Monmouth’s defense responded emphatically. One of the key questions for the Hawks entering the season was which players would emerge on the edges to strengthen the pass rush.

    Syracuse transfer Jahide Lesaine provided an early answer with a third-down sack.

    Monmouth nearly forced a three-and-out, but Tennessee Tech converted a third-and-7 and continued into the end zone. On third-and-goal from the 2-yard line, Leatherwood found Gabe Nunez, who beat Hasson Manning for the touchdown.

    Because Martin has exceeded that limit, she would be ineligible to play if she re-signed with Los Angeles on another developmental contract.

    The Sparks’ decision to claim guard Aaliyah Nye off waivers after the Atlanta Dream released her appears to have made Martin expendable. Martin averaged 2.3 points, 1.1 rebounds and 0.4 assists this season for Los Angeles.

    Another WNBA team could claim Martin, or she could sign a developmental deal with another team to finish the 2026 season.

    Could Kate Martin reunite with Caitlin Clark?

    It is very unlikely that the Indiana Fever would claim Martin for their 12-player roster right now. Both of Indiana’s developmental roster spots are also filled, meaning the team would have to release one of its developmental players to make room for her.

    The Baltimore Orioles have won five of their last seven games after a 4-3, 10-inning victory over the Athletics in Sacramento. They entered today two games behind the final American League Wild Card position.

    Baltimore also received a boost with Blaze Alexander’s reinstatement from the injured list. Alexander led off in the win and went 1-for-5, but he is not in tonight’s lineup. Jackson Holliday moves back into the leadoff spot, while Gunnar Henderson bats third after serving as a pinch-runner last night.

    Orioles lineup and recent hitting trends

    Pete Alonso is the designated hitter for a second consecutive game, with Coby Mayo starting at first base. Alonso is 0-for-8 with five strikeouts over his last two games and 1-for-24 against the Athletics across his last six games.

    Mayo is 6-for-19 with one home run and five RBIs in his last five games. Samuel Basallo starts behind the plate, and Dylan Beavers returns to left field. Beavers is batting .346 (9-for-26) with three doubles and three home runs over his last nine games.

    Holliday is 2-for-14 over his last three games and 5-for-24 over his last five. He went 3-for-6 and 2-for-4 in two games against the Cardinals in St. Louis.

    Shane Baz seeks run support against Oakland

    Shane Baz will look for the run support that has been difficult to find. He has received 15 runs over 12 starts since June 18. Among pitchers with at least 50 innings during that span, Baz’s 1.95 run-support average is the lowest in the majors.

    The right-hander is 4-14 with a 4.04 ERA in 26 starts. His 14 losses are tied with Tanner Bibee for the most in the majors. Baz is seeking his first win since June 12 against the Padres, and his eight-decision losing streak matches his career high.

    One encouraging statistic is Baz’s home-run rate. He has allowed 0.65 home runs per nine innings this season, the lowest mark by an Orioles starter with at least 20 appearances since Kevin Gausman posted a 0.56 rate in 2014.

    Baz started against the Athletics on May 9 and allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings, leaving him with a 5.48 ERA. He has a 4.10 career ERA in four starts against Oakland. In his only appearance at Sutter Health Park, he allowed four earned runs and five total runs over seven innings.

    Max Muncy is 2-for-3 with a home run against Baz, while Lawrence Butler is 2-for-12 with a double.

    Orioles bullpen and Oakland matchup

    Baltimore’s home-run streak ended at 15 games after last night’s victory. Alex Hoppe became the 10th Orioles pitcher to record a save this season, tying the franchise record set in 1987.

    Athletics right-hander Jack Perkins, a fifth-round pick in the 2022 draft out of Indiana University, is 3-9 with a 6.68 ERA and a 1.483 WHIP in 31 games, including 11 starts. He has struck out 104 batters in 90 1/3 innings.

    Perkins earned a “hold” on May 8 in Baltimore after retiring two batters in the ninth inning. He allowed one run and one hit, walked one batter and recorded two strikeouts. He also started against the Orioles last summer at Camden Yards and earned the win after allowing three runs and three hits over six innings. All three runs scored on Henderson’s first-inning home run.

    In his most recent start, on Aug. 12, Perkins surrendered six earned runs and seven total runs on 12 hits in five innings against the Rays. He then followed with 3 2/3 scoreless relief innings in Kansas City and allowed one earned run, three total, over five relief innings in Houston.

    Perkins has a 7.56 ERA and a 1.600 WHIP in 17 home games, compared with a 5.58 ERA and a 1.339 WHIP in 14 road games. He is allowing 1.69 home runs per nine innings this season after posting a 0.93 mark last year.

    Butler is hitting .355 (22-for-62) with five home runs, 11 RBIs and nine walks over his last 17 games. The Athletics are 8-20 over their last 28 games.

    The Yankees played a doubleheader against the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in a series with major postseason implications. If the teams require a tiebreaker, the club that wins the regular-season series will receive home-field advantage.

    New York lost the first game 6-0. Bellinger recorded a hit, but it was not enough to prevent the shutout loss.

    For the second game, manager Aaron Boone removed Bellinger from the starting lineup and inserted rookie Spencer Jones in his place. However, the decision was part of the Yankees’ plan for Bellinger’s return.

    Speaking with reporters earlier in the week, Boone had already said that Bellinger would play only one of the two games in the series, according to Gary Phillips of NY Daily News Sports.

    The Yankees do not want to push Bellinger too quickly as he continues rebuilding his game speed following the left hamstring injury. Jones gives New York a reliable short-term replacement, while Bellinger remains available off the bench as a potential left-handed pinch hitter in Game 2.

    “What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote. “If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal.”

    The timing of Curry’s decision could be as important as the value of the contract. ESPN’s Bobby Marks explained the current restrictions:

    “From now until June 30, Curry is eligible to sign up to a two-year/$136.7M extension. Because of the Over 38 rule, 2 years is the maximum allowed in an extension. He can sign for up to 3 seasons if he waits until FA.”

    If Curry signs immediately, the Warriors would commit significant salary to the veteran guard and limit their financial flexibility. If he waits, Golden State could enter next summer with considerably more room to reshape its roster.

    Brian Windhorst has argued that delaying the extension could be Curry’s smartest option.

    “If he chooses to sign right now, he could get two years at $140 million,” Windhorst said.

    “Obviously if that’s what he says he wants, you give it to him. But if he doesn’t sign his contract extension right now the Warriors could have over $100 million in salary cap space next summer.”

    Warriors’ roster plans depend on Curry

    That is the central choice facing Curry: sign now and secure a major payday, or wait and give the Warriors greater flexibility to build a stronger contender around him before the end of his career.

    Golden State’s current roster is not yet at a championship level, while Curry has made clear that he still wants to compete for NBA titles. The Warriors want him to remain with the franchise for life, and the belief is that Curry wants the same.

    McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) has delivered market-beating returns over the past 25 years, largely because of its franchise-focused business model. A $1,000 investment in the consumer discretionary stock 25 years ago would be worth $16,670 today.

    About $10,000 of that gain came from dividends, while McDonald’s stock itself slightly underperformed the S&P 500 over the same period. The company began paying a dividend in 1976 and has increased it every year since.

    How McDonald’s franchising model drives returns

    Most McDonald’s restaurants are franchised, giving the company a more asset-light structure than restaurant operators such as Chipotle, which owns and operates all of its locations.

    Franchising is common across the restaurant industry, but McDonald’s places particular emphasis on brand consistency. Its revenue depends heavily on fees paid by franchisees, including a 4%-5% fee on sales and a minimum 4% fee for advertising and promotions.

    McDonald’s also owns the building at every restaurant. That means it continues to collect rent even when a location’s fast-food operations slow. This real estate component helps the company generate relatively steady revenue across different economic conditions.

    McDonald’s has expanded its footprint to more than 45,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries. That scale may raise concerns about market saturation, but higher rents and population growth could continue to support expansion. The company’s business model may therefore keep driving stock-price appreciation and dividend growth for years to come.

    Should you buy McDonald’s stock now?
