    Yunior Marte Named San Francisco Giants Starting Pitcher

    Marte allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings in his major-league debut, earning a no-decision against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader.

    He threw 48 of 76 pitches for strikes and fell one out short of pitching the required innings for a win. Despite that, Marte’s debut was encouraging and could give him a chance to remain in the Giants’ rotation for the rest of the season.

    San Francisco entered the doubleheader with two rotation openings because of recent pitching injuries. However, the 22-year-old has already logged 112.1 innings this season, up from 102 innings last year, so the Giants may impose a modest workload restriction if he stays in the majors.

    Bear Family Rescued After Being Trapped in La Verne Water Tank

    A mother bear and her three cubs were rescued late Saturday, Aug. 29, after becoming trapped inside a large cistern in La Verne.

    The bears had entered the concrete water tank through a vent hole. Los Angeles County firefighters and California Department of Fish and Wildlife wardens worked together to free the family near the 5-Mile Loop Trail in Claremont Wilderness Park.

    Bear rescue operation in La Verne

    Authorities were called around 12 p.m. after people heard howling coming from the tank and went to investigate, according to a news release from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

    Officials initially reported that a mother bear and three cubs were trapped. One cub escaped and was found in a nearby tree when rescuers arrived, said Keith Navarre, spokesman for the Los Angeles County Fire Department and state officials.

    County firefighters cut an opening in the top of the concrete tank and lowered a ladder, allowing the mother bear and two remaining cubs to climb out, officials said. All four bears were safe and left the area on their own after they were freed at about 8 p.m.

    It was unclear how long the bears had been inside the cistern. More than 40 rescuers took part in the operation, including members of the county’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, Navarre said.

    Crews drained the water from the tank during the rescue and secured the cistern to prevent other animals from becoming trapped.

    Sonam Wangchuk has responded with a joke to Aamir Khan’s claim that he did not know the Ladakhi activist when 3 Idiots was being made. Wangchuk pointed to an old video showing the two at the same event and suggested that Khan may have forgotten the meeting because he was dressed as his Ghajini character.

    Wangchuk made the remark during a conversation with YouTuber Prakhar Gupta on his podcast. His comments came after his hunger strike during a student protest.

    The discussion followed Aamir Khan’s comments on the long-running belief that the character Phunsuk Wangdu in 3 Idiots was inspired by Wangchuk. Khan said he was not aware of Wangchuk while the Rajkumar Hirani-directed film was being made. He also said that neither Hirani nor writer Abhijat Joshi knew about the activist at the time.

    Wangchuk, however, said that he and Khan had interacted. Referring to a viral video showing Khan at an event where Wangchuk was present, he joked about the actor’s memory:

    “Uss time jab unhone kaha ki hum toh mile bhi nahi the… Toh baad me kuch videos aaye jisme woh Ghajini outfit mein mere ek speech ko dekh rahe the. Shayad woh Ghajini outfit mein the toh short-term memory loss huwa hoga, 15 second me bhul gaye honge. Toh, mai hairaan nahi hoon. Warna bahot detail mein mile the hum (At the time, when he said that we had never even met, some videos later surfaced showing him watching one of my speeches while dressed in the Ghajini outfit. Perhaps he was so immersed in the Ghajini character that he suffered short-term memory loss and forgot about it within 15 seconds. So, I’m not surprised. Otherwise, we had met in great detail).

    The reference to Ghajini relates to Khan’s appearance in the 2008 film. He played Sanjay Singhania, a character who suffers from short-term memory loss and can retain new memories for only a short period.

    Wangchuk went on to stress that his meeting with Khan was more than a brief introduction. He said they spoke at length and discussed ideas:

    “Humne suna hai na, woh apne character mein ghus jaate hai. Toh shayad Ghajini mein itne ghuse the ki jab woh award function me aaye, jisme main award le raha tha, woh bhi bhul gaye honge. Warna bahot detail mein mile, bahot ideas discuss kiye (We often hear that actors get so deeply into their characters. Maybe he got so immersed in Ghajini that when he came to the award function where I was receiving an award, he forgot that too. Otherwise, we had met at length and discussed several ideas).”

    Wangchuk addresses the 3 Idiots inspiration debate

    Wangchuk also clarified his position on the debate surrounding 3 Idiots. He said he would not call the film a direct account of his life or a biography. Instead, he described his interaction with Khan as a possible source of influence.

    According to Wangchuk, Khan may have used some of the ideas discussed during their meeting, shared them with his team and later developed them differently for the film. He added that other members of the creative team may not have known the origin of those ideas.

    “Unhone aisa hi daala hoga toh baaki ke jo unke co-writers ya directors hai unko nahi pata chala hoga ki yeh unhone apna aaj ka idea daala, kahi se aake, milke, baat karke daala. Isse mujhe koi farq nahi padhta hai. Jaane do (If he incorporated it this way, perhaps his co-writers or directors didn’t realise that he had brought in these ideas after meeting me and discussing them. It doesn’t bother me. Let it go).”

    Khan’s earlier comments were made at an event, where he described the idea that Phunsuk Wangdu was based on Sonam Wangchuk as a misconception.

    Minnesota State Fair Shuttle Bus Problems Persist as Metro Transit Works to Fix Issues

    Record attendance at the Minnesota State Fair is creating long waits for shuttle bus riders, with visitors reporting delays at several park-and-ride locations.

    More than 155,000 people entered the Great Minnesota Get-Together on opening day Thursday, according to the fair’s website. Attendance rose above 204,000 on Friday, putting additional pressure on shuttle services.

    At the fairgrounds, hundreds of people waited in long lines for buses returning to park-and-ride lots.

    “The line to get back to Hopkins Crossroad has been unprecedented,”

    said Katy Born of Plymouth, who parked in an overflow lot.

    “Every year, I’ve been coming here for twenty years,”

    said Rupesh Patel of Blaine.

    “This is the longest I’ve dealt with lines.”

    Social media complaints largely focused on the trip to the fair, including waits of several hours and parking lots located far from shuttle stops. One woman said she waited in line for three hours and parked in a ditch.

    “I know they’re having a hard time getting drivers, so I totally get it,”

    Born said.

    “But more park and rides would be ideal. More drivers would be wicked.”

    Metro Transit responds to delays

    Riders gave high marks to shuttle locations operated by the University of Minnesota. However, some visitors reported major delays at the Blaine and Cottage Grove pickup and drop-off sites, where waits were long and parking lots filled early.

    Metro Transit said it is monitoring traffic and adding resources when available.

    “Metro Transit is committed to getting people to the Great Minnesota Get-Together safely and as quickly as possible,” the agency said in a statement.  “We have been monitoring park and ride traffic and have been adding resources as available to provide additional State Fair service beyond what is regularly scheduled. With record-breaking attendance for the State Fair thus far, we are seeing heavy usage of our services and are working to add capacity.We are also aware of specific delays at the two sites you mentioned – there were two instances of customers coming from the Blaine park and ride becoming sick on the bus, requiring the vehicles to be pulled for cleaning, and causing service gaps. A traffic accident on I-94 caused some buses coming from Cottage Grove to have to detour through downtown Minneapolis, leading to longer trips in both directions. In all cases, we adapted as quickly as possible to resume scheduled State Fair service.”

    Visitor recommends arriving early

    Keith Daniels of Atlanta said arriving early is the best way to avoid the heaviest Minnesota State Fair shuttle crowds.

    “Like we got here at nine o’clock and the line was like a block long, but it went pretty quick,”

    Daniels said.

    “Because if you don’t come in before nine, that parking lot’s full. So, we made sure we get out of here before nine and get here, get on the bus. Got to be ready. Yeah, we do have a plan. Been here many times.”

    Detroit Lions Rookie May Have Made Himself Impossible to Cut

    Skyler Gill-Howard arrived at Detroit Lions training camp as a sixth-round rookie competing for a roster spot in one of the team’s deepest position groups. After a strong preseason, however, the defensive tackle may have become too valuable for Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes to risk losing.

    Gill-Howard delivered another impressive performance in Detroit’s 25-16 preseason win over the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday, finishing with two tackles, one sack and two quarterback hits. Once again, he created disruption from the interior of the Lions’ defensive line.

    One strong game does not guarantee an NFL roster spot, but a month of consistently making himself harder to ignore can significantly change the equation.

    Gill-Howard Finished the Preseason Strong

    The play that likely stood out most to Detroit’s coaching staff came on third down. Gill-Howard worked into the backfield and brought down Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson for a five-yard loss, ending Indianapolis’ possession and getting the Lions’ defense off the field.

    It was officially Gill-Howard’s first sack of the preseason, but it was not an isolated flash from an otherwise quiet player. He had steadily generated pressure throughout August, including two quarterback hits in Detroit’s preseason opener against Cincinnati.

    That performance prompted Campbell to single him out afterward.

    “He’s another one of these players for a young guy who is very conscientious and he has a serious approach about him. You don’t have to tell him something five times. You tell him once and he’s got it and he locks in,” Campbell said.

    That is meaningful praise for any rookie. For a sixth-round defensive tackle competing for one of Detroit’s final roster spots, it carries even greater weight.

    Why the Lions Like Gill-Howard

    Gill-Howard is not a typical NFL defensive tackle physically. At approximately 6 feet and 280 pounds, he is smaller than many interior defensive linemen. Detroit knew that when it selected him 205th overall out of Texas Tech.

    The Lions also knew which traits made him intriguing: quickness, leverage, physicality and relentless effort.

    Campbell has repeatedly highlighted those qualities. After Gill-Howard generated more pressure against Washington, the Lions coach offered perhaps his clearest explanation of why the rookie has continued to rise.

    “Sun Bleach just continues to make plays. He does it at practice. You can feel him out there, you know, and he just is relentless. He plays snap to whistle, and he’s all out. And he’s got to be right, you know he does, because he’s not a huge guy. But he knows who he is and he knows how he has to play. He plays with high effort, and he’s crafty, man. He’s explosive and he’s violent,” Campbell said.

    Campbell acknowledged Gill-Howard’s size limitation while explaining how the rookie compensates for it. The description sounds less like a developmental project and more like an evaluation of a player the coaching staff believes can contribute immediately.

    Detroit’s Defensive Line Competition Is Tight

    The Lions already had one of the toughest roster battles on the team along the defensive line. Gill-Howard’s performance in the preseason finale only made the final decisions more difficult.

    Aidan Hutchinson, Alim McNeill, Tyleik Williams, D.J. Wonnum and Derrick Moore appear to be roster locks. Tyler Lacy has played an important role, while Ahmed Hassanein has also put together an impressive summer.

    That leaves Gill-Howard competing with Chris Smith, Levi Onwuzurike, Mekhi Wingo, Ben Stille, Eric O’Neill and others for the remaining spots. There is no painless way for Detroit to resolve the competition.

    Gill-Howard’s progress has not been limited to preseason games. He received increased first-team work late in training camp, an important signal given where he began the summer. Coaches do not typically move sixth-round rookies up the depth chart by accident.

    Detroit’s final 53-man roster projections entering the preseason finale already included Gill-Howard. His performance against Indianapolis only strengthened the argument for keeping him.

    Gill-Howard’s Unusual Path to Detroit

    Gill-Howard took an unconventional route to the Lions. He began his college career at Division II Upper Iowa before transferring to Northern Illinois. His opportunity at the FBS level required him to change positions and move to defensive tackle after previously playing linebacker.

    He eventually became a team captain at Northern Illinois before transferring to Texas Tech for his final college season. Gill-Howard has therefore played defensive line for only a handful of years.

    That background matters when evaluating his potential. He entered Detroit as a 23-year-old rookie who was still relatively new to the position, yet he has already produced consistent disruption against NFL competition.

    The Lions may be evaluating not only what Gill-Howard is now, but also what he could become with another year or two of development.

    The Lions Face Difficult Roster Math

    Gill-Howard’s emergence does not give Detroit an easy decision. It makes the roster math even more challenging.

    The Lions could realistically keep nine or even 10 defensive linemen, depending on how they classify players capable of lining up at multiple positions. But every additional defensive lineman would likely mean one fewer receiver, cornerback, linebacker or offensive lineman.

    That is the difference between identifying the best 53 players and constructing the most balanced roster.

    Even so, Gill-Howard offers the traits coaches want from a player near the bottom of the depth chart. He can rush from the interior, disrupt running plays and continue working after his initial move fails. He repeatedly created negative plays throughout August.

    There is also a risk that Detroit could lose him on waivers. Gill-Howard is young, inexpensive and under team control, making him the type of developmental defensive lineman another organization could claim rather than allow the Lions to place him on the practice squad.

    That possibility must factor into Holmes’ final decision.

    Gill-Howard Made the Decision Difficult

    Players on the roster bubble do not control how many defensive tackles a team keeps or which injuries force the front office to protect another position. They can only make the decision more difficult.

    Gill-Howard did exactly that. He flashed against Cincinnati, created more disruption against Washington and ended the preseason with a sack and two quarterback hits against Indianapolis.

    The Lions selected him 205th overall four months ago, but by the time Detroit finalizes its roster, draft position may matter far less than the film.

    Gill-Howard spent the past month giving the Lions more reasons to keep evaluating him. At some point, a roster-bubble player stops merely trying to win a job and starts forcing the organization to explain why it would let him go.

    Gill-Howard may have reached that point.

    Roger Federer Brought to Tears During Hall of Fame Induction

    Roger Federer was overcome with emotion several times during his induction speech at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island, on Saturday.

    As the sun set over Newport’s grass horseshoe court at the Hall’s entrance, the 45-year-old Federer walked onto the stage in a tan suit. After kissing and hugging his wife, Mirka, who had introduced him, he quickly realized the speech would be difficult.

    “Oh man,”

    Those were the first words from the first man to win 20 Grand Slam singles titles.

    “This is very high level and a tough act to follow.”

    Federer joked:

    “I don’t know if you have been practicing secretly”

    before praising his wife’s presentation of the 274th Hall of Famer.

    Federer was inducted alongside Mary Carillo, the broadcaster and former player, who was presented by Hall of Famer Billie Jean King. Federer, known as the “Swiss Maestro” during the Hall’s first red-carpet show, said he “was a little stressed to be honest.”

    During his nearly 30-minute speech, Federer became emotional several times while reflecting on a career that included fluid movement, a quick approach to the net and a one-handed backhand. Those qualities helped him spend a record 237 consecutive weeks as the world’s No. 1 player in the ATP rankings.

    He first began to struggle midway through the speech while discussing his childhood hero, Stefan Edberg, although he described the emotion as “happy tears.”

    Federer became emotional again while speaking about his longtime coach, Severin Luthi. When he turned to thanking Mirka for supporting his journey, he paused and said:

    “Now the Mirka part,”

    He then broke into tears.

    “Oh gosh, this is such a mess.”

    Trying to lighten the moment, Federer told the crowd:

    “I need tissues and sunglasses, everything to protect me right now,”

    But the tears continued.

    Federer eventually regained his composure, much as he did while winning one of his five consecutive U.S. Open titles from 2004 to 2008 or reaching 10 straight Grand Slam finals, eight of which he won. He closed by thanking the ball kids and encouraging players to continue pushing tennis to new levels.

    Federer, who celebrated his 45th birthday three weeks ago, won eight Wimbledon titles and is one of only eight men to complete a career Grand Slam. He also won six Australian Open titles and captured the French Open in 2009.

    “I’m thrilled to have made the journey here,”

    he said.

    “It’s amazing to see yourself in a place like this. To immerse yourself in the history of the sport means a lot to me.”

    Carillo was inducted as a contributor and is a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame.

    King said:

    “She has earned her spot in sports journalism, and she has earned her spot in Newport.”

    Carillo, 69, said she was touched to stand before several Hall of Famers.

    “To walk through these gates here in the company of you people, that was beyond my dreams,”

    she said.

    76ers’ Proposed Blockbuster Trade Would Send Joel Embiid for 6’10” All-NBA Center

    The Detroit Pistons remain in negotiations with restricted free-agent center Jalen Duren, but contract talks are reportedly facing a prolonged stalemate. If the impasse continues, Detroit could explore trading the young star.

    Because Duren is an All-NBA-level talent with a significant age advantage, the Pistons would likely demand a high-impact player in return. One hypothetical four-team trade involving the Philadelphia 76ers, Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets would send Joel Embiid to Detroit.

    Hypothetical Four-Team Trade

    • 76ers receive: Jalen Duren via sign-and-trade on a four-year, $194.1 million contract, Duncan Robinson and a 2032 first-round pick
    • Pistons receive: Joel Embiid and second-round picks in 2027 and 2028
    • Clippers receive: Garry Harris
    • Rockets receive: Taurean Prince

    Embiid is not a frequent subject of trade speculation for understandable reasons. Although he has dealt with recurring injuries and has experienced periods of dissatisfaction, he has never left Philadelphia.

    Why Detroit Would Consider Joel Embiid

    To acquire Embiid, the Pistons would need to do more than trade Duren. Detroit would send Duren’s potential new contract to Philadelphia while also absorbing Embiid’s substantial salary.

    Embiid is entering a three-year extension that would pay him approximately $57.9 million in the 2026-27 season, with his salary increasing to as much as $67 million in the final year. Taking on that contract would be difficult regardless of Detroit’s available flexibility.

    Under the proposal, the Pistons would move four players, including the significant contracts of Duren and Robinson. The two primary pieces would join the 76ers, while the smaller contracts of Harris and Prince would be routed to Los Angeles and Houston, respectively.

    Detroit would remain hard-capped at the first apron after the trade. The Pistons could not move more than four players in the transaction because the proposed deal would leave them with only 11 standard roster spots.

    The trade would effectively exchange the franchises’ starting centers. Duren would join Philadelphia alongside Robinson, giving the 76ers a much younger center and a reliable shooting option. Embiid would move to Detroit as the Pistons pursue an immediate upgrade.

    Whether Detroit should surrender four pieces, including Duren and Robinson, along with a future first-round pick for Embiid would be debatable. The veteran center’s health is a major variable, but he is a former MVP and remains a dominant contributor when available. Those credentials would ordinarily justify a trade of this magnitude.

    Embiid has never played 70 games in a season, and there is little reason to expect that pattern to change. The proposed deal would give the Pistons a short-term veteran star capable of accelerating their push toward contention.

    Philadelphia could also be exploring a win-now roster by pursuing LeBron James in free agency. The 76ers would likely prefer to keep Embiid for that scenario, but the opportunity to acquire a much younger proven All-NBA player could still be appealing.

    Lionel Messi Scores Four Goals as Inter Miami Net Seven in Record Win

    Lionel Messi scored four goals as Inter Miami defeated visiting CF Montréal 7-1 on Saturday, ending the club’s winless run in emphatic fashion and setting a new Miami record for most goals in a game.

    Messi opened his account in the 40th minute with a deflected free kick. He struck again in the 52nd minute after a remarkable solo run, then assisted Luis Suárez before completing his hat trick with a delicate chip over the goalkeeper with seven minutes of regulation time remaining.

    Messi added his fourth goal deep into stoppage time, curling a free kick with trademark precision into the side netting.

    Messi reaches another career milestone

    “That’s what it means to have Messi on the team,” Miami midfielder Casemiro told Apple TV. “We have to enjoy these moments because he is a person, a player that makes history.”

    We saw today that we have to enjoy it, keep supporting and keep competing with him because he continues to be the best. He proved it in the World Cup. We have to enjoy it because, with him, we are so much stronger.”

    The four-goal performance was the eighth of Messi’s career and his first since joining Inter Miami. His previous four-goal game came in February 2020, when he scored four times for Barcelona against Eibar in Spain’s LaLiga.

    At 39, Messi is also the fastest player in MLS history to reach 20 regular-season multigoal games, achieving the mark in 72 appearances. He leads MLS scoring this season with 18 goals in 19 games, two ahead of FC Dallas forward Petar Musa.

    “There are no words to describe such footballing beauty,” Miami interim coach Guillermo Hoyos, who was suspended for the game, said. “So much is going on that words simply fall short.”

    He is constantly looking for that goal, that play, that pass; I don’t think he’s an ordinary footballer. Analyzing him, both as a player and as a person, goes so deep that you run out of words.”

    Inter Miami ends five-game winless run

    The victory was Inter Miami’s first in MLS play since July 25 and ended a five-game winless streak in all competitions, including the Leagues Cup.

    Hoyos watched from the stands while serving a suspension for repeated violations of the league’s late kickoff policy. The club named Cristian ‘Kily’ Gonzalez as his permanent successor this week, but Gonzalez is still waiting for his work permits before beginning his new role.

    “The significance of this victory is huge for everyone,” Hoyos said. “First and foremost for the players, the team itself, who truly deserved it and still do. For the club, which also deserves it given the immense effort involved; and for all of us working together.”

    Assistant coach Rafael Pérez led Miami in Hoyos’ absence. Casemiro opened the scoring with his first goal for the club since arriving in the summer, while 18-year-old Alexander Shaw scored Miami’s other goal in the 89th minute.

    The result keeps Inter Miami second in the Eastern Conference, 10 points behind Nashville SC. Montréal, which introduced new arrival and Messi’s former Barcelona teammate Alexis Sánchez in the second half, remains 14th, second to last in the Eastern Conference.
