  • Colton Cowser’s Walk-Off Home Run Robbery Stuns Rockies as Orioles Stay in AL Wild-Card Race

Colton Cowser’s Walk-Off Home Run Robbery Stuns Rockies as Orioles Stay in AL Wild-Card Race

Jake McCarthy appeared poised to deliver a walk-off home run for the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on Monday night. Instead, Baltimore Orioles center fielder Colton Cowser produced a remarkable ninth-inning home run robbery to preserve a 2-1 victory.

With a runner on second base and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, McCarthy needed a base hit to tie the game and force extra innings. He squared up an Andrew Kittredge pitch and sent it toward the deepest part of center field, approximately 415 feet from home plate.

Cowser tracked the ball throughout its flight, moving toward the wall and timing his leap as it continued to carry toward the fence. McCarthy had already begun rounding the bases, hoping the ball would clear the wall, but Cowser reached over the fence and made the catch to end the game.

Cowser landed on the warning track and immediately celebrated, shouting after making a spectacular catch to deny the Rockies. McCarthy could only smirk as he returned to the dugout, while Colorado was left stunned by the highlight-reel defensive play.

The catch quickly went viral on social media, with baseball fans expressing disbelief at what they had witnessed. Orioles great Adam Jones also praised Cowser’s effort.

“Wow what an amazing catch by Cowser to end the game. One of the best catches I’ve ever seen,” Jones wrote on X. “Defense and speed are things that can’t slump! Helluva athlete.”

The play was significant not only because it ended the game but also because of its potential impact on Baltimore’s playoff hopes. The Orioles improved to 69-69 after Cowser’s heroics.

Baltimore is just half a game behind the Cleveland Guardians, who entered the day 69-68 and held the American League’s third Wild Card spot. The Texas Rangers and Toronto Blue Jays were each 1.5 games back, while the Minnesota Twins were 3.5 games out as the final month of the regular season began Tuesday.

Cowser’s catch could prove especially valuable if the Orioles remain in contention for a postseason berth and continue chasing a chance to reach the World Series in October.

  • GoPro Enters Definitive Agreement to Merge With Starman Optical, Inc.

GoPro Enters Definitive Agreement to Merge With Starman Optical, Inc.

GoPro to Merge With Starman Optical in $285 Million Recapitalization Deal

GoPro, Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRO) and privately held optical-photonics company Starman Optical, Inc. have signed a definitive merger agreement that will recapitalize GoPro and expand its presence in AI infrastructure, government, defense and aerospace markets.

Under the proposed transaction, GoPro shareholders will receive a total cash payment of $285 million, or $1.14 per share, subject to a potential adjustment based on GoPro’s net working capital at closing. Existing shareholders will retain approximately 10% of the outstanding shares of the combined company.

GoPro’s approximately $92 million in outstanding debt is expected to be repaid in full at closing, leaving the company with a substantially debt-free balance sheet. GoPro will remain publicly listed on Nasdaq.

GoPro to Add U.S.-Made Optical Transceivers

GoPro said the merger is intended to maximize the value of its intellectual property and growth potential across consumer, commercial and defense markets. Over the past 24 years, the company has developed imaging technologies, advanced optics and an intellectual property portfolio comprising more than 2500 U.S. patents.

The company plans to continue supporting its existing consumer products, subscription services and cloud platform while investing in growth and a broader, more diversified product roadmap.

Starman’s U.S.-made optical transceivers are expected to be added to GoPro’s product portfolio. The move would extend GoPro’s reach into the large and rapidly growing optical-transceiver market supporting AI infrastructure and data centers.

After the transaction closes, the combined company also intends to apply its intellectual property, optics and imaging capabilities to defense, government, robotics and aerospace markets, building on demand for U.S.-made technologies.

“Advanced optics and imaging are essential to AI, national security, and the broader economy, yet much of the critical hardware supporting these technologies continues to be manufactured overseas,” said Charles Tebele, Chief Executive Officer of Starman Holding. “The combination of GoPro’s world-class optical expertise and intellectual property with Starman’s advanced transceiver capabilities and U.S. manufacturing platform creates a unique opportunity. Together, we intend to bring production of these critical components back to the United States.”

“We expect this merger to enable GoPro to grow across consumer, commercial and defense markets as a leading American imaging and optical solutions company, addressing important areas of national security related to cameras, optics and AI infrastructure. We’re excited to combine with the Starman team to capitalize on this opportunity and play an important role in America’s future,” said Nicholas Woodman, Founder and CEO of GoPro.

Transaction Expected to Close by Year-End 2026

The merger has been approved by GoPro’s Board of Directors and Starman’s Board of Directors. Closing is expected by the end of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals, approval by GoPro stockholders and other customary closing conditions.

GoPro plans to provide additional information about the transaction after closing. Houlihan Lokey, Inc. is serving as GoPro’s financial adviser and has provided a fairness opinion. Fenwick & West LLP is serving as GoPro’s legal counsel.

  • Zacks Investment Ideas Highlights Dell, Nvidia, Hewlett Packard, Super Micro Computer and Lenovo

Zacks Investment Ideas Highlights Dell, Nvidia, Hewlett Packard, Super Micro Computer and Lenovo

Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) is scheduled to report its fiscal second-quarter results after the market closes on Tuesday, September 1. Expectations are elevated as demand for artificial intelligence infrastructure continues to drive rapid growth in the company’s server business.

Dell posted a record first quarter, and another strong performance from its AI-optimized servers could strengthen the bullish outlook for DELL stock. Shares have gained more than 260% year to date but remain about 10% below their 52-week and all-time high of $514.

    Dell’s Fiscal Q2 Earnings Expectations

The Zacks Consensus Estimate projects fiscal second-quarter earnings of $4.95 per share, more than double the $2.32 reported in the year-ago quarter. Revenue is expected to reach $45.34 billion, up 52% from $29.78 billion a year earlier.

Wall Street’s current expectations are slightly above Dell’s previous guidance. Management forecast quarterly revenue of $44 billion to $45 billion and adjusted earnings of $4.80 per share, plus or minus $0.10. Dell also projected approximately $15.5 billion in AI server revenue and about 75% growth in Infrastructure Solutions Group revenue.

The outlook follows a strong first quarter in which Dell generated $16.1 billion in AI-optimized server revenue, a 757% year-over-year increase, while recording $24.4 billion in AI orders. Dell later raised its fiscal 2027 AI server revenue outlook to approximately $60 billion.

    Analyst Estimates Continue to Rise

Rising earnings estimates are another positive signal ahead of Dell’s quarterly report. Analyst EPS revisions for the second quarter, third quarter, fiscal 2027 and fiscal 2028 have continued to move higher over the past week.

Over the last 90 days, fiscal 2027 EPS estimates have climbed nearly 11%, from $17.40 to $19.29. Fiscal 2028 EPS estimates have risen almost 10%, from $21.42 to $23.51.

After reporting adjusted earnings of $10.30 per share last year, Dell is expected to deliver 87% EPS growth in fiscal 2027, followed by projected growth of 22% in fiscal 2028.

Zacks ESP Signals Potential Earnings Upside

The Zacks ESP (Expected Surprise Prediction) also points to a potentially strong quarterly performance. The Most Accurate Estimate among Wall Street analysts places Dell’s fiscal second-quarter EPS at $5.26, more than 6% above the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $4.95.

Dell exceeded first-quarter EPS expectations by nearly 60% and has delivered an average earnings surprise of 18.66% over its last four quarterly reports.

Dell Expands Its AI Infrastructure Ecosystem

Dell is one of the most direct hardware beneficiaries of rising AI infrastructure investment through its server business, primarily sold under the PowerEdge (PE) brand. These systems provide the computing hardware used by businesses and data centers for applications, databases, cloud workloads and AI workloads.

Dell’s partnership with Nvidia continues to expand through the Dell AI Factory, including new PE systems designed around Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin architecture.

The company is also deepening its relationship with Advanced Micro Devices by offering AI platforms powered by AMD Instinct accelerators.

Competition remains intense, however. Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Super Micro Computer and Lenovo Group are competing aggressively for AI server and enterprise infrastructure spending. Dell’s ability to preserve strong margins while rapidly increasing AI server shipments will therefore be an important metric to watch.

    Outlook for DELL Stock

Dell enters its fiscal second-quarter report with substantial momentum, supported by strong AI server demand and steadily rising earnings estimates.

The trend could leave additional upside for Dell stock, which trades at approximately 24 times forward earnings despite its significant year-to-date rally.

The primary risk is that expectations have become exceptionally high, with the current consensus already above the upper end of Dell’s initial fiscal second-quarter revenue guidance. Even so, robust AI demand, sharply higher earnings projections and an expanding infrastructure portfolio powered by Nvidia and AMD create a compelling setup ahead of the results.

Dell currently carries a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), making DELL one of the more attractive AI infrastructure stocks to consider ahead of Tuesday’s report.

US Open Predictions: Keys vs. Korneeva and Fritz vs. Blanch on Tuesday, September 1

US Open Predictions and Picks for Tuesday, September 1

The US Open first round concludes Tuesday, with Americans Madison Keys and Taylor Fritz competing during the day session. Gael Monfils will play in the evening in what is expected to be his final US Open appearance.

Below are tennis predictions for Tuesday’s US Open matches, including winner payouts, key statistics, and PrizePicks recommendations.

US Open Match Predictions and PrizePicks Payouts

Before reviewing Tuesday’s tennis picks, here is a look at the featured matches and consensus favorites on PrizePicks Team Picks, where users can select the winner of each match.

Tennis on PrizePicks received its biggest upgrade yet ahead of the US Open. Users can now combine a player-to-win selection with Player Picks, including aces, total games won, and other statistics.

On PrizePicks Team Picks, a 2x payout represents a return of $200 on a $100 entry, or $20 on a $10 entry. A lower payout multiplier indicates a higher implied probability for that result based on user selections.

Payouts were live at the time of writing and may change. Tennis winner markets are available in 36 states.

Madison Keys vs. Alina Korneeva US Open Prediction

    • Match winner payouts: Keys 1.31x | Korneeva 3.22x
    • Tournament round: First round
    • 2026 record entering the US Open: Keys 33-14 | Korneeva 37-14
    • Head-to-head record: First career meeting
    • Scheduled time: 11:30 a.m. ET
    • How to watch: ESPN

Madison Keys has enjoyed a solid season, reaching the round of 16 at each of the other three majors and winning a WTA 250 title in Eastbourne. However, she has slipped outside the top 20 after losing ranking points at the Australian Open and French Open.

Keys opened the North American hard-court swing with early exits in Washington and Toronto. She regained some momentum in Cincinnati by reaching the quarterfinals before losing in three sets to a red-hot Sara Bejlek. Bejlek also defeated Aryna Sabalenka on her way to the semifinals.

Alina Korneeva began 2026 ranked outside the top 200 but has climbed into the top 70 ahead of the US Open. This summer, she reached the semifinals in Athens and the round of 16 in Toronto, earning notable wins over Ann Li, Emma Navarro, and Iva Jovic, all of whom are currently ranked in the top 30.

Korneeva’s recent form could make this a difficult first-round match for Keys. Still, the 19-year-old Russian has limited Grand Slam experience, with this being only her fourth appearance in a major main draw. She is also facing a player who won the Australian Open just last year.

According to Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings, Keys remains the stronger hard-court player and has a 64.0% projected chance of defeating Korneeva.

Make your Keys vs. Korneeva US Open prediction on PrizePicks now!

Madison Keys vs. Alina Korneeva Pick

Keys’ matches at her last tournament totaled 28, 16, 23, and 32 games.

Korneeva has competed well against top-50 players on hard courts this season, winning four of six matches. All six matches took place on North American hard courts this summer.

In tour-level hard-court matches this year, Keys has held a significant serving advantage. She has won 60.4% of her service points, compared with 54.6% for Korneeva. The Russian has been much more effective on return, however, winning 54.9% of return points compared with 43.5% for Keys.

Tennis Abstract’s hard-court Elo ratings place Korneeva 27th, suggesting that she is considerably more dangerous than her WTA ranking of 69th indicates.

Keys vs. Korneeva pick: 21.5 total games

Pick Keys to win plus total games on PrizePicks for higher payouts!

Taylor Fritz vs. Darwin Blanch US Open Prediction

    • Match winner payouts: Fritz 1.02x | Blanch 14.28x
    • Tournament round: First round
    • 2026 record entering the US Open: Fritz 31-15 | Blanch 1-3
    • Head-to-head record: First career meeting
    • Scheduled time: 12:40 p.m. ET
    • How to watch: ESPN

Taylor Fritz is a heavy favorite against fellow American Darwin Blanch, and the matchup statistics explain why.

Blanch enters the US Open in poor form, having lost seven consecutive matches across all levels since early July. All seven defeats came against players ranked outside the top 50, with world No. 85 Rinky Hijikata representing his highest-ranked opponent during the losing streak.

The 18-year-old has primarily played Challenger events this season and owns an underwhelming 18-22 record across all levels. He is 0-2 against top-50 opponents in his career and has never faced a player ranked inside the top 30.

Fritz enters the tournament ranked No. 10 in the world. Since the start of the grass-court season, he has reached at least the quarterfinals in five of his last six events, including Wimbledon. He also won the title in Washington this summer, further highlighting his strong form.

This appears to be a mismatch between players at very different stages of their careers. Tennis Abstract gives Fritz a 97.9% projected win probability.

Make your Fritz vs. Blanch US Open prediction on PrizePicks now!

Taylor Fritz vs. Darwin Blanch Pick

Blanch’s last four losses all came in straight sets. Those opponents were ranked 108th, 99th, 175th, and 85th.

Fritz is 6-1 against players ranked outside the top 100 this year. His only loss came on clay, which is easily his weakest surface. In those six wins, he dropped only one set, and three of his straight-set victories came at Grand Slam tournaments.

Fritz has won 70.6% of his service points on hard courts in 2026, the fifth-best mark among top-50 players. His 17.6% ace rate in that sample ranks second.

Blanch has lost six of his eight tour-level hard-court matches. Both of his wins came against players ranked outside the top 70.

Fritz vs. Blanch pick: 31 total games

Pick Fritz to win plus total games on PrizePicks for higher payouts!

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo vs. Gael Monfils US Open Prediction

    • Match winner payouts: Vallejo 1.69x | Monfils 2.08x
    • Tournament round: First round
    • 2026 record entering the US Open: Vallejo 13-11 | Monfils 4-9
    • Head-to-head record: First career meeting
    • Scheduled time: 7 p.m. ET
    • How to watch: ESPN2

Gael Monfils plans to retire at the end of the season, but he will have at least one more opportunity to entertain the US Open crowd. The Frenchman turns 40 today and may have already produced the shot of the tournament in mixed doubles last week.

Monfils’ trademark athleticism still appears in flashes, but his 4-9 singles record reflects his struggles to win matches while playing a limited schedule. Even so, he could be competitive against Adolfo Daniel Vallejo.

The 22-year-old Vallejo has played a schedule heavily weighted toward clay and has only six tour-level hard-court matches to his name, all of them coming this summer. He split those matches 3-3, although his most recent appearance ended in a 6-2, 6-0 loss to Botic van de Zandschulp.

Vallejo owns a mediocre 14-19 career record across all levels on hard courts, with most of those matches coming against players ranked outside the top 100.

Three of Monfils’ four wins this year have come on hard courts. He still ranks 38th on the surface in Tennis Abstract’s Elo ratings. Although he went 1-2 in his two tournaments before arriving in New York, both losses went to a deciding third set. One of those defeats came against Learner Tien, who is currently ranked 15th.

Despite Vallejo’s respectable results during his recent hard-court run, Tennis Abstract ranks him 149th on the surface, compared with 76th on clay.

At his age, Monfils has been susceptible to tiring during long matches, and that remains a concern Tuesday night. If his body holds up, however, his experience could prove decisive against a clay specialist making his US Open debut.

Make your Vallejo vs. Monfils US Open prediction on PrizePicks now!

Adolfo Daniel Vallejo vs. Gael Monfils Pick

Both of Monfils’ Grand Slam matches in 2026 have lasted at least four sets, producing 47 and 40 total games.

Monfils is a more competitive 3-3 against players ranked outside the top 50 on hard courts this season.

Across Vallejo’s six summer hard-court matches, he has posted a modest 6.5% ace rate and an elevated 7.4% double-fault rate. That combination could leave him more vulnerable to breaks of serve.

Vallejo has also returned effectively, breaking opponents 25.5% of the time in those matches. That could help him challenge Monfils, who has produced tour-average serve shot quality over the past 52 weeks, according to Tennis Data Innovations.

Vallejo vs. Monfils pick: 38.5 total games

  • WWE, AEW and Pro Wrestling Backstage News

WWE, AEW and Pro Wrestling Backstage News

Mark Henry believes fans and wrestlers “jumped to conclusions” over Avery Styles’ “paying his dues” controversy last month.

The controversy began after Arik Cannon criticized Styles for not helping with ring and chair setup at GCW shows. Wrestlers from the independent scene, retired performers and active WWE talent have since weighed in on the situation.

Speaking to Clutch Points in a new interview, Henry said he viewed the incident as a learning experience rather than focusing on the negativity.

“I thought that people jumped to the conclusion. You gotta remember that these are kids, and that they’re young, and sometimes you, you tend to wanna do what you wanna do rather than what’s good for everyone, and sometimes you don’t know what’s good for you to do. So I don’t harp on the negativity. I just look at it as it should be a learning experience, and that everybody should go from the ‘I’m sorry,’ to, ‘Now let’s do better,’”

Mark Henry discusses Avery Styles joining TNA

Henry also addressed Styles signing with TNA, saying that Avery “needed TNA.” He described the move as an important opportunity for the young wrestler to prove himself in front of a larger audience.

“I thought it was good. I’m always glad to hear that a wrestler got a job, because that means that they’re gonna be used, that they’re gonna get a chance to prove in front of an audience that they are worthy of the attention that they get. I think they’ll be happy with him because he’s athletic. He comes from pro wrestling. He’s a legacy kid, so people automatically gonna wanna see him just so they can compare him to his father. That’s just human nature. He’s gonna have every opportunity to prove that he is his father’s son. And everybody that’s not legacy, that’s one element that they don’t have, so, you know, he’s got an advantage, Avery Styles needed TNA. It’s like getting a brand new car. And the last car you had, you barely could make it one block without it overheating, and you have to raise the hood and pour water in it to cool it off. Like, now It’s brand new. So you have a new place to drive around and show everybody what you’re worth,”

Elsewhere in the interview, Mark Henry discussed nepotism in professional wrestling.

Expected Value measures how favorable a bet is by comparing its probability of winning with the odds offered by the sportsbook. For example, if you placed a $1 wager 100 times on a bet with an Expected Value of $25, you would win some bets and lose others but would expect to finish with $25 in profit on your $100 investment.

“IndiGo flight 6E 2102, which departed from Goa for Delhi at 9.16 am, returned to Goa after reporting a failure in one of its engines.

“The Air Traffic Control (ATC) declared a full emergency around 9.30 am and the aircraft landed safely on runway 28 at 9.51 am,” a source said.

An airport official confirmed that 229 passengers were on board the aircraft.

“The flight returned after one of its engines developed a snag,” the official said.

An IndiGo spokesperson said in a statement, “A technical issue was detected shortly after takeoff on IndiGo flight 6E 2102 operating from North Goa to Delhi.”

“Following the standard operating procedure, the relevant authorities were informed, and the pilots turned back and landed the aircraft safely at Manohar International Airport,” the airline said.

The aircraft is undergoing maintenance checks and will resume operations after receiving all necessary clearances, IndiGo said. The airline also arranged alternative travel for passengers to help them reach their destination.

  • David Booth: AI May Change the World, But It Won’t Change How You Invest

David Booth: AI May Change the World, But It Won’t Change How You Invest

There was a time when people could earn a living by sawing blocks of frozen river ice, transporting them to cities, storing them in straw, and selling them to households that needed to keep food cold.

    Today, we have Bluetooth refrigerators.

That transformation is an example of what I call human ingenuity: the collective ability of people around the world to solve problems and make the future better.

Artificial intelligence may represent an “ice block to refrigerator” level of advancement. AI already helps people complete everyday tasks more efficiently, from creating workout routines to planning vacations. Over time, it could also contribute to breakthroughs in health care, transportation, and the nature of work.

But I am confident that AI will not change how prices are set in stock and bond markets.

    How AI could affect investing

I constantly hear speculation about AI’s impact on the financial industry. Can AI pick stocks? Should investors put all their money into the stocks of AI giants? Will AI change everything we know about financial markets?

To me, these questions highlight the importance of understanding how public markets work.

Think of the stock market as the world’s largest information-processing machine. Buyers and sellers come together and agree to trades, and both sides must believe the price is fair. If stock prices are too high, people will not buy because they want a fair return. If prices are too low, people will not sell. Repeated millions of times each day, this process causes stocks to settle at prices that generally reflect available information.

During my graduate-school years at the University of Chicago, I was fortunate to take part in the data revolution that helped the investing world understand that markets were efficient.

Before 1960, no one knew what a market-wide portfolio typically returned. Now, with 100 years of data, we know that U.S. stocks have returned about 10% a year on average over the past century. Most professional stock pickers cannot compete with the market. There is no compelling evidence that money managers can reliably identify winning stocks over time.

Why AI is unlikely to beat the market

A better assumption is that the stock market reflects all available information faster than any individual or model ever could. To believe an AI agent can help you beat the market, you would have to believe it can consistently identify which stocks are mispriced and when.

But investment returns are uncertain, and no one—not even an AI agent—knows what is coming. It is unrealistic to expect one particular AI model to systematically outperform its competitors over the long term.

Even if AI makes information gathering more efficient, that advantage would be available to all market participants. Using AI to buy and sell stocks may therefore add anxiety and random noise to individual investors’ decisions.

Similarly, concentrating an entire portfolio in “AI stocks” could lead to disappointment.

Most companies will probably use AI to improve efficiency and increase productivity, which makes me optimistic about the future. However, history suggests that targeting the companies expected to benefit most from an AI revolution may not produce a successful investing experience.

The risk of betting on the next big winner

Many investors have compared today’s environment with the telecom companies that built the internet’s infrastructure during the dot-com boom. Consider the leading telecom stocks in 1999, when Lucent Technologies and Nextel Communications led the pack. Twenty-five years later, only one of the top 20 stocks had survived in the same corporate structure.

Some of today’s market leaders will thrive, while others will not. Entirely new winners will emerge that few people are discussing today. Google, for example, did not go public until 2004. And who would have guessed that Levi Strauss would become one of the major winners from the Gold Rush?

No one knows which companies will win. So why make that bet? Trying to select a major winner could turn you into a major loser.

The good news is that investors do not have to gamble on individual winners to build wealth. A broadly diversified portfolio can include AI stocks along with many other companies, allowing investors to participate in whatever the future becomes instead of betting on what they think it will become.

Diversification and the future of AI investing

Public markets help finance thousands of competing ideas. Some will result in spectacular failures, while capital moves rapidly toward what works. With more than $1.2 trillion in expected capital spending in 2027 on projects ranging from data centers to chips, the beneficiaries could be Big Tech—or an entirely different sector.

By buying and holding a diversified portfolio of stocks, investors can pursue their financial goals without spending their time trying to predict which company will become the next big thing. They will own it regardless.

This investing mindset helps people manage uncertainty about the future rather than remain anxious about it.

Open public markets have expanded the number of people who can benefit from innovation. Ordinary investors—not just founders, venture capitalists, and insiders—can participate in long-term wealth creation and benefit on aggregate without taking the risk of excessive concentration.

I am hopeful that AI will help people solve major problems and improve millions of lives. It may even produce a better refrigerator. But it is unlikely to help investors beat the market.

  • Can 80-Year-Old Democrat Ed Markey Win Another U.S. Senate Term?

Can 80-Year-Old Democrat Ed Markey Win Another U.S. Senate Term?

Massachusetts voters will decide whether the Democratic Party’s summer revolt against long-serving incumbents will reach 80-year-old Senator Ed Markey in Tuesday’s primary. His younger Democratic challenger, 47-year-old Representative Seth Moulton, has argued that Markey is too old to serve another term.

The Massachusetts Senate primary reverses the pattern seen in several earlier contests, in which young progressive candidates challenged and sometimes defeated older incumbents portrayed as symbols of a cautious, outdated establishment.

Markey, who has served in Congress since 1976, is campaigning as the progressive candidate, while Moulton has shifted some of his more moderate positions closer to those of his older rival in an effort to attract younger voters.

Polling suggests Markey is likely to overcome concerns about his age and win a third full Senate term. If successful, he would be 86 at the end of it.

Markey’s progressive credentials have been strengthened by endorsements from prominent left-wing figures, including Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and his fellow Massachusetts senator, Elizabeth Warren.

Markey and Moulton clash over age and experience

During a recent televised debate, Markey directly addressed questions about his age. “I think everyone watching this debate can see that I’m more energized than I’ve ever been before in my life. I am criss-crossing the state. I’m fighting for families,” the senator said.

“Congressman Moulton has a hard time keeping up with me in the course of this campaign.”

Moulton, a former Marine who served in Iraq before later running a private healthcare company, has called for age limits for members of Congress. He contrasted his campaign schedule with Markey’s.

“I’ve done over 50 town halls. You’ve done a couple,” he told Markey. “You’ve missed three candidate forums just in the past week. It’s a lot of work to represent this entire state.”

The age issue became more pointed when the debate turned to technology and the candidates’ personal use of artificial intelligence. Asked whether he used AI platforms such as ChatGPT in his work, Markey said he uses “whatever is inside of my iPhone and my iPad – whatever comes up”.

Moulton cited the answer as evidence that Markey did not fully understand the latest technology or its potential to transform every sector of society.

“Senator,” he said, “if you don’t even know what you’re using on your phone or your iPad, this is why we need a new generation of leaders to regulate these technologies to make sure that they are safe.”

    Moulton takes more moderate positions

Moulton, who entered the House of Representatives in 2015, has adopted more moderate positions than Markey on issues including healthcare and transgender athletes. On healthcare, he has stopped short of supporting the single-payer system backed by his opponent.

At a recent debate, Moulton apologized for previously saying, after Kamala Harris lost to Donald Trump in 2024, that he did not want his daughters “getting run over on a playing field by a male or formerly male athlete”.

Moulton has also said he would not vote for Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer if elected. Schumer, 75, has been presented as an example of the ageing and out-of-touch establishment leadership that critics say has alienated younger and left-leaning voters.

In heavily Democratic Massachusetts, the Democratic primary often determines who will win the general election.

Markey leads in Massachusetts Senate primary polling

An Emerson College Polling survey released on Sunday found that voters appeared willing to look beyond Markey’s age. The poll showed Markey leading Moulton by 60% to 33%, a substantial improvement from Emerson’s May survey, when Markey held a five-point advantage over the congressman.

“If these numbers hold, this race will mirror Markey’s successful ‘peak-late’ approach to winning in 2020,” Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said.

Kimball was referring to Markey’s defeat of then-Representative Joe Kennedy III, a member of Massachusetts’s best-known political dynasty. Despite Kennedy’s youth — he was 39 at the time — young progressives backed Markey and portrayed him as the candidate most willing to challenge the party establishment.

A Markey victory would run against the broader backlash against elderly leaders, which critics have described as a gerontocracy.

Joe Biden abandoned his 2024 presidential re-election campaign amid concerns about his mental acuity after a disastrous debate against Trump in Atlanta. Trump went on to defeat Biden’s replacement, Harris, but is himself 80 and has faced increasing questions about his health and ability to serve.

Former Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, 84, has been absent from Congress for months after a fall and hospitalization, prompting intense speculation about his health.

On the campaign trail, Markey has presented his age as a source of experience. “I’ve been standing up to the bosses for a long time, so I know no one gives it to you,” he says in one of his most prominent advertisements, featuring Warren and Sanders. “We have to fight for it.”
