HSBC Names Hong Kong Dollar Stablecoin HSBC RedCoin
HSBC unveiled the official name of its forthcoming Hong Kong dollar stablecoin on Tuesday, September 30, announcing that the digital asset will be called HSBC RedCoin. The bank said the launch is planned before the end of the year, marking the next stage of its digital payments and financial innovation strategy in Hong Kong.
HSBC said it will issue HSBC RedCoin under a stablecoin licence granted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April 2026. At launch, the stablecoin will be available only through PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App, giving customers access through the bank’s existing digital platforms.
RedCoin Launch to Focus on Digital Payments
The initial rollout will target everyday person-to-person (P2P) transfers and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. HSBC plans to begin with these consumer and retail payment applications before expanding HSBC RedCoin to wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.
“Today, we are naming our Hong Kong stablecoin to reflect our heritage: HSBC RedCoin,” said Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer, Hong Kong and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth, Hong Kong, HSBC. “Launching our coin is just the beginning. Our goal is to support Hong Kong’s financial innovation, underpinned by the security, trust and simplicity that define HSBC.”
Why This Matters
HSBC RedCoin’s planned launch places the bank’s stablecoin within Hong Kong’s regulated digital-asset framework. Starting with PayMe and the HSBC HK Mobile App allows HSBC to introduce the Hong Kong dollar stablecoin through established customer channels, while the planned progression from retail payments to wholesale and institutional applications signals a broader potential role for the asset within the bank’s services.
