  • Which Notable NFL Players Were Among the Biggest Surprises of the 2026 Roster Cuts?

Which Notable NFL Players Were Among the Biggest Surprises of the 2026 Roster Cuts?

The 2026 NFL preseason is over, and the regular-season opener is only days away. The season begins with a Super Bowl rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, although the game will be played on a Wednesday instead of the traditional Thursday.

The schedule change comes because Thursday features the first regular-season NFL game hosted in Australia. Although that matchup will kick off locally on Friday, the significant time-zone difference means it will air on Thursday night in the United States.

Surprise NFL roster cuts for the 2026 season

Over the weekend, all 32 NFL franchises finalized their initial 53-player rosters, reducing their summer rosters from a limit of 90 players. More than 1,000 players were released, waived, or placed on injury designations, leaving veterans and former draft picks searching for opportunities elsewhere.

Some of those players will return to the league through practice squads, but many face an uncertain future. Several high-profile names surprised analysts by becoming available:

    Will Levis, quarterback

Selected 33rd overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, Levis started 21 games and posted a 5-16 record. After missing the entire 2025 season because of a shoulder injury, the Titans parted ways with the quarterback. He ended his Tennessee tenure with 3,899 passing yards, 21 touchdowns, 16 interceptions, and an 82.7 passer rating.

    Evan Neal, offensive lineman

Neal was drafted seventh overall in 2022 and started 27 games, all at right tackle. After missing the entire 2025 season because of an injury, his release became one of the most surprising roster moves of the preseason given his high draft status.

    Jaydon Blue, running back

A fifth-round selection by the Cowboys in 2025, Blue finished his initial stint with five appearances. He recorded 38 carries for 129 yards, averaging 3.4 yards per carry, and scored one touchdown. He also had one reception for five yards and three kick returns for 72 yards.

    Dameon Pierce, running back

A fourth-round pick by Houston in 2022, Pierce also spent time with the Chiefs. Across 43 career games, he has totaled 419 carries for 1,684 yards, averaging 4.0 yards per carry, with eight touchdowns. He has since joined the Eagles’ practice squad.

    Mecole Hardman, wide receiver

Drafted 56th overall in 2019, Hardman is a three-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs but has struggled to establish a stable role outside Kansas City. In 82 career games, he has recorded 178 receptions for 2,302 yards, averaging 12.9 yards per catch, and 16 touchdowns. He was also named to the 2019 Pro Bowl as a return specialist.

    Marquez Valdes-Scantling, wide receiver

Valdes-Scantling, a veteran former fifth-round pick of the Packers, has also played for the Chiefs, Bills, Saints, 49ers, and Steelers. He won two Super Bowls with Kansas City before most recently being released by the Cowboys. In 116 career appearances, he has made 219 receptions for 3,686 yards, averaging 16.8 yards per catch, and 21 touchdowns.

  • Angel Reese’s Insult Toward Courtney Williams After Heated Clash Sparks Fan Outrage

Angel Reese’s Insult Toward Courtney Williams After Heated Clash Sparks Fan Outrage

Angel Reese was at the center of another heated WNBA incident on Sunday after a verbal exchange with Courtney Williams escalated beyond the usual physical battle on the court.

During the second quarter of the Atlanta Dream’s game against the Minnesota Lynx, Reese became tangled with Williams while trying to make a move in the post. Williams and Natasha Howard closed in defensively, with Williams eventually forcing a jump ball.

After the players were separated, Reese and Williams continued talking. Fans watching closely believed they could read Reese’s lips as she apparently mouthed “Bald head.” The apparent comment quickly sparked reactions online.

Fans react to Angel Reese’s trash talk

“Angel be mad animated man jeez,” one fan wrote. Another joked: “She’s bald! She’s bald and she’s torturing people who have hair!!” Some fans found the insult more bizarre than offensive.

“Calling someone ‘bald head’ in the middle of a play is so random you almost have to respect the creativity,” one fan said. Others were more critical of Reese’s behavior.

“She was all up in Collier’s face as well. Reese might be one of the most disrespectful players in the league,” one commenter wrote. Another fan added: “She’s got a knack for talking about people’s hair while wearing a wig.”

Angel Reese makes WNBA history despite controversy

The confrontation did not completely overshadow Reese’s performance. Atlanta defeated Minnesota 89-81, with Reese finishing with 15 points, 11 rebounds and two steals.

Her latest double-double was also historic. “NO ONE HAS EVER DONE IT MORE,” the Dream posted. “Angel Reese now stands alone with the most double-doubles (29) in a single season in WNBA history. Another all-time WNBA record. Another piece of history rewritten by Angel Reese.”

Reese surpassed Alyssa Thomas, who recorded 28 double-doubles for the Connecticut Sun in 2023. After the game, Reese focused on gratitude rather than her exchange with Williams.

“I’m just grateful and I’m thankful. This opportunity is an opportunity of a lifetime,” Reese said. “Being able to play this game every single day, I wake up and I’m blessed. I’m so happy to be in Atlanta, excited… There’s so many blessings in my life and I’m just super grateful.”

It was another outstanding statistical performance from Reese, although her exchange with Williams ensured that the postgame discussion focused on more than her record-setting achievement.

Angel Reese Avoids Suspension After WNBA Rescinds Controversial Eighth Technical Foul

Angel Reese will not serve an automatic one-game suspension after the WNBA rescinded what was initially recorded as her eighth technical foul of the season.

The technical foul was issued following an incident involving Portland guard Carla Leite. However, the league reversed the decision shortly after the game.

As a result, Reese remains on seven technical fouls and will avoid both the $1,500 fine and the one-game suspension that would have followed an eighth technical foul.

  • 7 Memorable Italian Grand Prix Moments at Monza, From Michael Schumacher’s Record to Charles Leclerc’s Victory

7 Memorable Italian Grand Prix Moments at Monza, From Michael Schumacher’s Record to Charles Leclerc’s Victory

The Italian Grand Prix is just days away, and Monza is preparing to welcome Formula 1 teams, drivers and fans in typically passionate Italian style. From emotional celebrations to the Tifosi turning out in force, the fastest circuit on the F1 calendar has consistently delivered memorable moments both on and off the track.

Monza has featured on the Formula 1 calendar since the championship began and has hosted every Italian Grand Prix except one since 1950. These are some of the most unforgettable moments from the Temple of Speed in recent racing history.

    Charles Leclerc Delights the Tifosi

Few achievements in Formula 1 are more special than winning for Ferrari at its home race in Monza. Charles Leclerc experienced that feeling in 2019, when he claimed victory at the Italian Grand Prix for his second career win and his first at Monza.

“There were people as far as I could see,” he said afterwards. “It was packed. I was trying to find my mum. She was in a grandstand… I was trying to find her but there were way too many people.”

Michael Schumacher Equals Ayrton Senna’s Victory Tally

Michael Schumacher remains Ferrari’s most successful race winner, but one of his most emotional victories came at the 2000 Italian Grand Prix.

After missing the previous year’s race, the German driver returned to Monza in strong form and won in front of the Tifosi. It was the 41st victory of his Formula 1 career, bringing him level with Ayrton Senna’s total. The achievement prompted an emotional reaction from Schumacher during the post-race press conference.

    Ferrari Celebrates 90 Years

Ferrari chose the weekend of the 2019 Italian Grand Prix to celebrate its 90th anniversary. The team took over Milan’s Piazza Duomo for a special “90 years of emotions” event, bringing together Charles Leclerc, Sebastian Vettel, former drivers and members of Ferrari’s past and present management.

The celebration highlighted the Maranello team’s storied history in front of a sea of red jerseys and caps, with the iconic Duomo di Milano providing the backdrop.

  • 5 Storylines to Watch Ahead of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix

5 Storylines to Watch Ahead of the 2026 Italian Grand Prix

The second half of the Formula 1 season is now fully underway, with the final two European rounds forming a double-header that begins in Italy. McLaren have rediscovered their form, while Ferrari’s home support will ensure plenty of attention when the paddock arrives at Monza.

Antonelli set for a home-race penalty

Ferrari traditionally receive enormous support at Monza, but Italian fans may feel divided this weekend as Kimi Antonelli arrives at his home Grand Prix as the championship leader.

Twelve months ago, it would have been a surprise to predict that Antonelli would hold a 59-point advantage in the standings during only his second Formula 1 season, even with Mercedes expected to produce a championship-contending car.

However, Mercedes are continuing to focus on the best approach to the season as a whole rather than prioritising individual races. As a result, Antonelli faces a difficult challenge to win at Monza because of a planned power unit penalty.

Reliability concerns have convinced Mercedes that both cars will need to take a penalty at some point before the end of the season. The team could also upgrade its power unit through the FIA’s Advanced Development and Upgrade Opportunities (ADUO) mechanism.

Whether or not Mercedes introduces a new specification at Monza, the team has confirmed that Antonelli will take a complete new power unit and start near the back of the grid.

“With Kimi, we’re taking the full thing,” Toto Wolff said in Zandvoort. “Our calculations say that that’s the best track to take it. Obviously, algorithms don’t take their nationality into consideration. We’re here to fight for a championship and not get the most PR.”

    Red Bull’s driver situation

The summer shutdown ended with an unexpected, although temporary, change to Red Bull’s driver line-up after Isack Hadjar injured his wrist before the Dutch Grand Prix and was ruled out of the weekend at Zandvoort.

Liam Lawson was promoted to replace him and impressed despite having limited practice running during the Sprint weekend. By Saturday’s qualifying session, Lawson had closed in on Max Verstappen and earned a place alongside his team-mate on the fourth row. He then produced a solid drive to seventh, finishing behind the McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari cars.

With Lawson at Red Bull, Yuki Tsunoda returned to Racing Bulls and also enjoyed a strong weekend, narrowly missing out on points. Both drivers therefore proved capable replacements while Hadjar continues his recovery.

Hadjar’s availability for Monza has not yet been confirmed. If he is unable to return, Red Bull are expected to retain the Zandvoort line-ups, giving Lawson and Tsunoda another opportunity to impress. Monza presents a very different circuit challenge, but the drivers would have three practice sessions to build on their previous experience.

Stability in the Formula 1 driver market

Three driver contracts were confirmed before the Dutch Grand Prix, suggesting there may be little movement across the Formula 1 grid in 2027.

Alex Albon was the first to confirm that he would remain with Williams. His team-mate Carlos Sainz soon followed by committing his future to the team, ensuring James Vowles will have an unchanged driver line-up to work with next year.

Max Verstappen then extended his Red Bull contract until at least the end of 2030. The Dutchman reaffirmed his intention to complete his entire career with the team.

Since the Dutch Grand Prix, Franco Colapinto has also been confirmed for another season at Alpine alongside Pierre Gasly after a strong campaign earned him a contract extension.

So far, the confirmed moves have all involved extensions and renewals. Lando Norris and McLaren have also committed to a long-term partnership, indicating that the driver market has stabilised this year.

Aston Martin remain a team to watch because Fernando Alonso has yet to announce his plans for 2027. There could also be movement at Haas and Racing Bulls.

Ollie Bearman is expected to continue with Haas, while Esteban Ocon’s recent form shows he is doing everything possible to remain alongside him. Both seats, however, are still officially available.

Although no announcement has been made, it would be a major surprise if Isack Hadjar and Arvid Lindblad did not retain their seats at Red Bull and Racing Bulls respectively. Lawson’s substitute appearance has also kept him in contention for another season, despite the emergence of Red Bull junior Nikola Tsolov.

The Tifosi prepare for Ferrari’s home race

Kimi Antonelli may lead the Drivers’ Championship, but Monza is still expected to be transformed into a sea of red as the Tifosi turn out in force.

McLaren have won the past two races, yet Ferrari have been Mercedes’ closest average challenger this season. Lewis Hamilton is joint-second in the standings, 59 points behind Antonelli.

Antonelli’s expected penalty should improve Ferrari’s chances of fighting for victory at their home race as they attempt to reduce Mercedes’ 87-point lead in the Constructors’ Championship.

Formula 1 racing at Monza in front of such a passionate fanbase is always one of the season’s defining sights. If Hamilton or Charles Leclerc can deliver a victory, the atmosphere beneath the iconic podium will be especially memorable.

    Ferrari to celebrate Michael Schumacher

Alongside Ferrari’s hopes of winning at Monza, the team will pay tribute to one of the most successful drivers in Formula 1 history.

Michael Schumacher won five of his seven Drivers’ Championships with Ferrari between 2000 and 2005. The 2026 season marks 30 years since the legendary German joined the team and 20 years since his final victory for the Scuderia, which came at Monza as he announced his first retirement from the sport.

Schumacher had to wait five years to win the championship, but he still claimed three victories during his first season in Ferrari red in 1996, including at Monza. He went on to win at least once in each of his 11 seasons with the team.

Ferrari have unveiled special race suits for Hamilton and Leclerc featuring Schumacher’s logo and the seven stars he used on his helmet to represent his seven world titles. Ferrari said this week’s tributes are inspired by Schumacher’s “impact on the racing world” and “his enduring mindset”.

  • Oscar Piastri’s 2026 F1 Season: The Ugly Statistics Behind a Winless Year

Oscar Piastri’s 2026 F1 Season: The Ugly Statistics Behind a Winless Year

Oscar Piastri’s struggles at McLaren have continued into the 2026 Formula 1 season, with qualifying pace, rear-tyre management and the MCL40’s aerodynamic characteristics limiting his challenge for race wins.

Piastri won the 2025 Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, extending his lead over McLaren teammate Lando Norris to 34 points. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen was 104 points adrift and appeared to be out of contention.

However, Piastri did not win another grand prix during the remainder of the season and eventually dropped to third in the championship. His decline prompted unfounded speculation that McLaren was sabotaging his title bid.

    Piastri trails Norris in 2026

Beyond podium finishes at Suzuka and Miami in the spring, Piastri has not seriously challenged for victory during a difficult 2026 campaign. More concerning for the Australian is that Norris has outperformed him, winning at the Hungaroring and Zandvoort, as well as the Miami sprint.

Piastri’s problems have been most apparent in qualifying and have carried into the races. Norris has beaten him 22-7 in qualifying since last season’s Dutch Grand Prix. Piastri has six pole positions, nine fastest laps and nine grand prix victories, but he has not looked likely to add to that total so far this year.

Why the McLaren MCL40 is challenging for Piastri

Part of the problem is linked to the McLaren MCL40’s design concept. Piastri has traditionally struggled on low-grip circuits, where his relatively conventional driving style can create spikes in rear-tyre surface temperatures as the tyres slide.

Norris has shown greater adaptability between the two drivers. By overlapping the brake and throttle while approaching corners on a shallower trajectory, he encourages the front tyres to help rotate the rear of the car as they reach peak lateral grip. That approach requires a strong feel for front-end grip and confidence that the rear axle will respond as expected.

Piastri’s more linear brake and throttle inputs tend to produce greater rear-end movement when grip levels are low. That weakness has been amplified by this year’s cars, which generate less overall downforce.

McLaren has also struggled to produce efficient rear downforce because it chose the shortest wheelbase permitted under the regulations. The decision delivered straightforward weight savings but left the team with less floor area for adding strakes and slots to manage airflow.

Piastri laboured to sixth in Zandvoort as his teammate won.

Small losses caused by rear-end slides can accumulate throughout a lap, depending on the circuit layout. Piastri then needs to use more electrical energy than Norris to regain speed, which can leave him with a lower state of charge and cost him top speed on the straights.

    Rear-tyre degradation remains a concern

Recent upgrades have returned McLaren to race-winning contention after an underwhelming start to the season. Piastri failed even to make the grid in Australia and China because of power-unit problems, but the rear axle’s behaviour remains a concern, particularly during races, when he generally experiences more tyre degradation than Norris.

The issue was visible at the most recent Dutch Grand Prix. Norris defeated championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s Mercedes in a straight fight, while Piastri was held back by a slow pit stop and rear-tyre problems. He finished sixth, 32 seconds behind his teammate.

“In general I’ve been much happier with the car this weekend, which has been good,” Piastri said in Zandvoort.

“I feel like it’s been back into the normal kind of rhythm of having strengths in some corners, weaknesses in others, rather than just trying to find time everywhere, which has been nice.

“We still probably lack a little bit of downforce compared to some of the others, or at least some balance characteristics. I think we rely a lot on the grip from the new tyres to help our balance.

“Maybe we pay the price a bit more when the tyres get worse, but that’s just a guess.”
