  • ‘Obsession’ at Halloween Horror Nights: Nikki and Curry Barker Surprise

‘Obsession’ at Halloween Horror Nights: Nikki and Curry Barker Surprise

Halloween Horror Nights is known for pushing creative boundaries, and its latest addition is set to give fans an even more immersive Obsession experience.

Earlier this month, Halloween Horror Nights Hollywood creative director and executive producer John Murdy announced that Nikki from Obsession will appear during the 2026 event. Murdy has now revealed more details about the character’s interactive presence at Universal Destinations & Experiences’ popular after-hours event, saying the concept came together “very late in the game for us in terms of our development.”

How Nikki will appear at Halloween Horror Nights

During an Aug. 8 panel, Murdy teased the version of Nikki that fans will encounter. The character will be based on her final appearance in Curry Barker’s film, which features both Nikki (Inde Navarrette) after Bear’s (Michael Johnston) twisted wish corrupts her agency and autonomy, and the real young woman trapped inside her own body by the curse. Murdy confirmed that, at Halloween Horror Nights, guests will interact with Nikki before the “wish” is undone.

Murdy previously compared the experience to an interactive “Where’s Waldo?”, with Nikki appearing at different locations throughout the park. Fans quickly connected the concept to the roaming Art the Clown experience from the event’s 2025 Terrifier collaboration.

“It’s similar to Art last year, where we created this thing to activate areas of the theme park you would never expect to see a performer in. That included our retail store,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve identified a number of different locations where she can appear. You never know where you might encounter her.”

Unlike Art, who was portrayed by a team of “scare actors” for the first time in the event’s history, Nikki will be performed by traditional actors. Murdy wrote the dialogue using material pulled “straight from Curry’s” film, and the performers will select guests to engage with.

“Normally, our scare actors don’t speak,” Murdy explains. “But it seemed really important to give Nikki the authentic voice Curry gave her in the film. So I took all of the dialogue from the film, and put together a creative treatment that I sent to Curry.”

Guests who want to interact with Nikki will need to monitor USH’s social media accounts, including its Instagram Story, where a password will be shared. The password will trigger interactions with the performer.

“It encourages our guests to find Nikki, and if they give her the password, they might get something,” he says.

That “something” will include the One Wish Willow phone number that Bear calls while attempting to modify his wish.

“I love the scene where Bear tries to call the customer service department, and when I was reading about the making of the film, I realized that Curry did that voice,” he says. “I’ve asked him to record a special message for our fans as if he were the customer service rep from One Wish Willow. So it’ll have a phone number on it, and they can call the number and get an exclusive message from Curry.”

An interactive performance based on the film

As part of the park’s standard protocols for day and nighttime characters, Nikki will have a production assistant acting as her handler. The handler will accompany her throughout the park and help ensure the safety of performers and guests.

Murdy has also adapted lines from Obsession to let the character and performer control their interactions with attendees.

“Curry’s dialogue can be used to engage or disengage a guest,” Murdy says. “She has so many great lines like, ‘No, no, no, no’ from that dinner sequence, or she can say, ‘I thought we were having a nice time,’ and just turn and leave.”

The last-minute addition was initially inspired by a fan who sent Murdy “a video of an interview that Curry did about how the Halloween season was coming, and how Nikki would be the No. 1 costume.”

The conversation between Barker and the journalist eventually turned to Halloween Horror Nights. The event’s mazes have become badges of honor for many horror filmmakers and television creators, as well as markers of pop-culture relevance. When Barker revealed that he attends the event every year, Murdy decided to create something for him.

After contacting Focus Features, Murdy arranged a call with Barker and pitched an idea based on something the filmmaker had mentioned in the interview.

“He expressed a desire to see her in the event this year, and I combined it with what we used to do with the password to create a new activation for our fanbase,” he says. “He was very much in favor of the idea, and that’s what we’re in the middle of developing.”

Navarrette, who was recently announced as part of the cast of Marvel’s upcoming X-Men movie following her breakout performance in Obsession, also said earlier this summer that she hoped to see Nikki at Halloween Horror Nights. The actress said she wanted to attend dressed as the character, following the example of performers such as Us star Lupita Nyong’o, who have appeared in costume as part of the event.

Halloween Horror Nights revives its password system

When Halloween Horror Nights begins on Sept. 3, the Nikki experience will also echo the event’s 2011 collaboration, the “Eli Roth’s Hostel: Hunting Season” maze.

“I was doing Hostel with Eli Roth, and Eli really wanted the girls that lured the guys into the ‘art show’ — which is just a torture chamber in Hostel — as part of the house. I’m like, ‘Well, they really need something to do, something interactive with the guests.’ Eli kept everything from Hostel, so he had all the business cards for Elite Hunting, which was the secret society in the film.”

To create the interactive elements, Murdy developed a password system and shared the password on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“It was this Easter-eggy underground thing for the real big fans,” he tells THR. “I just started tweeting passwords every night and saying, ‘If you give the password to the girls in front of Hostel, you could get something in exchange.’”

Murdy later brought the concept back in different forms for collaborations involving properties such as Ghostbusters and Insidious. Although the system was shelved several years ago, dedicated Halloween Horror Nights fans have repeatedly asked when it would return.

The developing Nikki experience reflects a broader effort by Halloween Horror Nights to follow the fast-changing horror landscape. Murdy says the current moment belongs to a 24-year-old filmmaker who turned a $750,000 independent film into a record-breaking box-office success.

“It’s like New Hollywood in the late ’60s into the early ’70s, but now it’s the YouTube kids stepping into the arena,” Murdy says, while discussing the horror resurgence that the after-hours event has capitalized on over the past decade. “I think it started with Get Out. That was the first moment where everybody was like, ‘Whoa.’ Sinners falls into that big time, but then there’s the double whammy of Obsession and Backrooms, which feel [tonally] different from Sinners and Get Out.”

What else is coming to HHN 2026

For Murdy, following changes and trends within the horror genre is central to keeping the bicoastal event fresh and expanding its audience. Alongside Nikki, Halloween Horror Nights 2026 will feature the Evil Dead Burn house, including an animatronic talking head for the first time.

The “Ozzy Osbourne: Prince of Darkness” maze will pay tribute to the late rocker’s life and discography. It will feature a “Crazy Train” and a giant bat that bites the head off the Black Sabbath frontman.

The Hellraiser queue will include a giant puzzle box “like a pastiche painting with all the different levels of hell” and a center circle that “disappears while you’re waiting in line and electrifies, before you see Pinhead in a circle doing lines from the film,” according to Murdy.

For the first time, the Sinners house will also use Water World stunt performers for a floating air stunt. A flying rig will drop the Irish vampire Remick into the scene long enough for him to hover while delivering his now-iconic “Sammie” line.

Nikki is the latest example of Halloween Horror Nights’ ongoing push to expand the event’s possibilities. The event will also begin its 35th anniversary celebration at Universal Orlando Resort in Florida on Aug. 28.

“always pushing to see where we can take the brand next,” says Murdy.

  • US Open 2026: Carlos Alcaraz Drawn Against Roman Safiullin as Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Arthur Fery Learn First-Round Opponents

US Open 2026: Carlos Alcaraz Drawn Against Roman Safiullin as Novak Djokovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Arthur Fery Learn First-Round Opponents

Carlos Alcaraz begins his US Open title defence against Russia’s Roman Safiullin in what will be the first major test of his fitness since a long-term wrist injury.

The second-seeded Spaniard, who won the men’s title in New York last year, has not played a competitive singles match for more than four months because of inflammation in his right playing wrist. Despite that extended absence, Alcaraz remains one of the leading favourites to win the tournament again, particularly after his great rival Jannik Sinner withdrew with a knee injury.

Alcaraz and Sinner have appeared to be a level above much of the men’s tour over the past two seasons. However, returning from a prolonged lay-off with a delicate wrist problem and defeating the rest of the field would be a remarkable achievement, even for a player regarded as a generational talent.

    Alcaraz faces immediate fitness test

The seven-time major champion missed this season’s French Open and Wimbledon because of the injury, which did not require surgery. He returned to court earlier this week in the US Open mixed doubles alongside Serena Williams.

Wearing a long compression sleeve on his right arm, Alcaraz did not look entirely convincing in the exhibition-style event. He appeared to be understandably holding back on his serve and return as he gradually readjusted to competitive match play.

A Grand Slam singles match played over five sets will provide a significantly greater physical challenge. Safiullin is not an ideal opening opponent, with the 29-year-old Russian possessing a powerful serve and aggressive groundstrokes.

Safiullin reached the fourth round at Wimbledon last month before losing to Novak Djokovic. He is likely to try to take time away from Alcaraz, test his resilience from the baseline and make the Spaniard uncomfortable throughout the match.

    Alcaraz’s potential US Open route

Predicting how a Grand Slam draw will unfold is always difficult, but even reaching the fourth round could leave Alcaraz facing increasingly demanding opponents given the length of his absence.

Based on the seedings, Alcaraz could meet the consistent American Tommy Paul or the unpredictable Kazakh Alexander Bublik in the last 16.

Athletic Frenchman Arthur Fils and big-serving American Ben Shelton are among the potential quarter-final opponents, while Djokovic could await in the semi-finals.

Only Alcaraz and his core team know how his wrist will respond to the demands of five-set tennis in the heat of a Grand Slam tournament. A difficult opening match at Flushing Meadows, followed by a potentially intimidating second week, should provide the clearest indication of whether he is ready to defend his US Open crown.

  • “Just Play Dead” Review: Samuel L. Jackson Leads a Dated Crime Comedy

“Just Play Dead” Review: Samuel L. Jackson Leads a Dated Crime Comedy

“Just Play Dead” is a convoluted crime comedy that revisits the post-“Pulp Fiction” subgenre of charismatic criminals plotting elaborate, violent schemes with a comedic edge. Screenwriter Dan Gordon, who adapted his own 2016 novel, follows a wealthy criminal who recruits his unfaithful wife to fake his death and defraud a $30 million life insurance policy.

Despite starring Samuel L. Jackson and being directed by Martin Campbell, whose credits include “Casino Royale” and “GoldenEye,” the film feels less like a fully realized crime thriller than a tax shelter—particularly given its production in the Canary Islands. Eva Green, who has often excelled at playing women capable of manipulating men, appears disengaged as the femme fatale at the center of Gordon’s overcomplicated quadruple-cross plot.

    A convoluted insurance scam

Jackson plays Jack Wolfe, a criminal hiding in the Canary Islands after an associate is caught with evidence that Jack’s considerable wealth was not acquired entirely legally. For years, Jack has used his wife Nora (Green), a former sex worker, as a “sweetener” in schemes involving other criminals. Nora is delighted by the possibility of Jack going to prison, but their marriage creates a serious legal complication: Jack named her the 51% owner of his estate, meaning she cannot testify against him and could share responsibility if he is indicted.

Jack therefore proposes that Nora help stage his murder, frame someone else and collect the $30 million insurance payout for them to divide. Nora, however, had already started recruiting two potential fall guys: Dani (Eoin Macken), a local police officer in love with her, and Chad (Jason Fernández), a handsome surfer whom she can manipulate through her sexual appeal.

Dani’s partner Bianca (Maria Pedraza) warns him not to become entangled with the wife of a wealthy criminal. Dani pleads with Nora to leave with him but refuses to commit murder. When Chad also rejects the plan, despite his lack of good judgment, Nora blackmails him into taking part. Jack then approaches Chad independently, offering a similar arrangement with a different result: Jack and Chad would split the insurance money while Nora took the blame.

Samuel L. Jackson and Eva Green struggle with the material

With a ponytail that faintly recalls his “Jackie Brown” character Ordell Robbie, Jackson appears unusually relaxed as Jack, a criminal who anticipates every possibility. Unfortunately, that calmness becomes lethargy. Even when given the kind of confident monologues that made him so compelling in Quentin Tarantino’s films, Jackson delivers a largely somnambulant performance.

Green fares no better in a role that should suit her. Nora is supposed to be an alluring and calculating vixen, but Green’s impatient, unconvincing performance makes the character seem disconnected from every scene. Costume designer Irina Kotcheva dresses her in a succession of strappy, skin-tight outfits that recall Nora’s past as a call girl, rather than giving her the tropical wardrobe expected of a wealthy trophy wife in the Canary Islands.

The exchanges between Jack and Nora become tedious quickly. Their counterparts—Dani, Chad and Bianca—are neither intelligent nor sympathetic enough to maintain interest in the increasingly tangled plot. Fernández also struggles to settle on a consistent accent, shifting between a flat Southern California surfer drawl and something more exotic. The inconsistent accents weaken the film’s sense of place, while Pedraza, the closest thing to a local performer, barely conveys that connection. Nicole Ansari Cox’s appearance as a nun who is also the film’s most capable police officer only raises further questions about the island’s law-enforcement recruitment practices.

Martin Campbell delivers polished visuals but little suspense

Although the disastrous “Green Lantern” damaged Campbell’s standing in Hollywood—unfairly, since the film’s failures were not primarily his fault—he still creates the glossy visual style seen in two of the most popular post-Sean Connery James Bond films. “Just Play Dead” looks far more polished than its basic-cable or streaming-oriented premise would suggest, though the Canary Islands locations are so striking that almost any competent filmmaker could capture beautiful images there.

Campbell’s reunion with Green also fails to recreate the simmering chemistry she shared with Daniel Craig in “Casino Royale.” The director’s skills remain more evident in 2022’s Liam Neeson thriller “Memory” and last year’s “Cleaner,” both of which better demonstrate what he can still do.

Instead, “Just Play Dead” feels derivative of “Pulp Fiction” and “Get Shorty,” recalling the uninspired copycats that helped bring that crime-comedy cycle to an end. The first film it most strongly evokes is the poorly received 2004 Elmore Leonard adaptation “The Big Bounce,” which is hardly a recommendation.

“Just Play Dead” review: A crime comedy not worth the risk

It is difficult to determine whether “Just Play Dead” is meant to be an earnest crime comedy or, like its characters’ schemes, a cover for questionable financial arrangements. The production lists six credited producers, three co-producers, four associate producers and 24 executive producers—more credited producers than speaking roles.

Whatever the explanation, the film is a sinkhole for the audience’s time and the producers’ money. Viewers would be better served revisiting almost any of the older films that inspired it—yes, even “The Big Bounce”—than spending time with this unwieldy and forgettable crime caper.

I Don’t Remember Nothing, I Just Play Football

Druski has built a massive following with hyper-relatable, satirical sketch comedy. His mockumentary-style videos and short skits often draw on real-life events, celebrity culture and everyday behavior.

He began his comedy career on Instagram and TikTok around 2017, but his major breakthrough came during the 2020 lockdowns. His growing online popularity eventually attracted major hip-hop artists, leading to appearances in high-profile music videos such as Drake’s “Laugh Now Cry Later” and Lil Baby’s “Errbody.”

One of Druski’s most infamous skits focused on Erika Kirk, while rumors involving Gia Duddy also circulated online after he gained widespread attention.

Druski’s NFL concussion skit goes viral

Druski is now drawing attention with another provocative comedy sketch aimed at the NFL. This week, he went viral for a satirical video titled “Athletes Get Concussions & LOSE THEIR MINDS.”

The sketch delivers a dark commentary on the dangers of football, including head injuries, concussion protocols and chronic traumatic encephalopathy, commonly known as CTE.

Rather than taking a restrained approach, Druski uses his trademark observational style to parody the erratic behavior sometimes associated with athletes who have experienced repeated brain trauma.

Druski portrays fictional NFL player Ray Price

In the sketch, Druski plays fictional running back Ray Price of the MFL League. The character is first shown being knocked to the ground during a play, with his helmet coming off as he lies stunned on the field.

The situation quickly escalates. Price is later shown leading police on a 10-mile chase while driving a gold Ferrari. At home, he streams online while behaving erratically, speaking to an empty room, shouting at people and dismissing the seriousness of his condition.

The scenes parody real-life incidents in which impaired athletes have publicly displayed erratic behavior on social media.

The sketch ends at a media news conference, where Price gives reporters a blank response: “I don’t even remember… I don’t remember nothing. I just play football.”

During the 2025 NFL season, documented in-game concussions rose to 168, a 30% increase from the 129 concussions recorded during the 2024 campaign.

  • Raiders News: Tight Ends Get Love, but Defensive Tackles Do Not

Raiders News: Tight Ends Get Love, but Defensive Tackles Do Not

The Raiders’ young defensive backs have generated plenty of excitement, along with a long list of NFL player comparisons. Coach Joe Woods compared fifth-round cornerback Zeke Masses to Denzel Ward. Jermod McCoy has drawn comparisons to Stephon Gillmore, while Darien Porter has been linked to Tariq Woolen. Treydan Stukes has been compared to Kyler Gordon and Cooper DeJean, and Dalton Johnson has been mentioned alongside Cam Taylor-Britt and Javon Bullard.

But what are the most realistic NFL comparisons for these young Raiders defensive backs?

    Remembering Elvis “Toast” Patterson

Don’t be fooled by the haters. Elvis “Toast” Patterson is a 10-year NFL veteran with two Super Bowl rings. Some people, including Patterson himself, claim that his nickname referred to the Toast of the Town in New York when he won his first Super Bowl with the Giants.

One thing is certain: Toast reinvented the concept of the “cover corner.” Whenever he filled in at cornerback, opponents were a lock to “cover the spread.”

A year after starting at cornerback in the Super Bowl, Patterson was unceremoniously cut by Bill Parcells after an allegedly hangover-impaired Monday Night Football performance. According to legend, Tuna canned Toast after a Sunday night on the Town.

Ultimately, though, the real losers were bookmakers and New York bagel houses, left with no Lox to Cover the Spread after Toast left Town. Patterson eventually landed with the Raiders, where he successfully reinvented himself as “Ghost,” a special teams legend who seemed to materialize out of nowhere to make big plays.

More often than not, comparing almost any young cornerback or defensive back to the one and only Elvis “Toast” Patterson is a good bet. Just sayin’.
