    Guardians’ Season Saved by Four Swings, Two Dramatic Wins in One Day

    CLEVELAND — If the Cleveland Guardians nudge their way into the October picture, they will remember Sept. 4 as the day that saved their season. For the first time since Aug. 19, 1984 — when the Clint Eastwood thriller “Tightrope” was the No. 1 movie in the country — Cleveland walked off both ends of a doubleheader, securing two dramatic, must-have victories separated by four hours and 39 minutes.

    Guardians Complete Twin Comebacks Against Tigers

    The Guardians erased deficits in each game against the Detroit Tigers. A day that threatened their grip on the final wild-card berth and their bid to unseat the division-leading Chicago White Sox instead proved about as fruitful as possible. The action began with a 64-minute rain delay and a shaky first inning from starter Logan Allen, forcing the bullpen into action just a couple of outs into a 19-inning day. It ended with rookie Travis Bazzana triumphantly slamming his helmet into the grass and sprinting so far from his pursuing teammates that reliever Hunter Gaddis gasped for air and “put the brakes on.”

    Along the way, Cleveland lost Chase DeLauter to a right wrist sprain, Angel Martínez to a left shoulder contusion, and manager Stephen Vogt to an ejection. Gaddis, Erik Sabrowski, and Daniel Espino submitted critical multi-inning efforts to stabilize a bullpen juggling a cascade of moving parts.

    Rocchio and Bazzana Deliver Historic Heroics

    Brayan Rocchio smashed a tying grand slam and a walk-off home run to earn hero status in a 7-6 Game 1 victory.

    Bazzana belted a two-run shot to erase an eighth-inning deficit, then ripped a walk-off single to secure a 4-3 Game 2 victory. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, it is the first time in the expansion era (since 1961) that a team had a player record a game-winning RBI and a game-tying hit in the same game in both ends of a doubleheader. Cleveland’s middle-infield duo, mired in a second-half slump, provided a pair of long-awaited adrenaline releases.

    Bazzana Breaks Out of Slump in Clutch Fashion

    Bazzana entered Friday’s action with a .559 OPS over his previous 56 games. The rookie and former All-Star carried Cleveland’s lineup at a time when injuries sidelined DeLauter and José Ramírez and when Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo were scuffling. He acknowledged he had been pressing and needed a day like this.

    “It’s that time of year where you have to make stuff happen,” Bazzana said.

    “I’ve been trying to figure it all out,” Bazzana said. “I really haven’t been at my best. I haven’t been the best version of myself. … I think I needed that, those close games, and just (to) get out of my head and compete.”

    He went 2-for-3 in the opener and replaced DeLauter in the nightcap, collecting two more hits. When he made contact in the eighth inning, he delivered a stone-cold stare to his dugout as the baseball sailed over the fence in right-center. He was far more animated during his walk-off single, spiking his helmet before Rocchio even reached home plate. (Somewhere, former Browns linebacker Dwayne Rudd, inventor of the premature celebratory helmet toss, pointed at his TV screen like Leonardo DiCaprio.)

    “You have to find a way to be mentally consistent and mentally bring out the best in yourself,” Bazzana said. “I think sometimes the moment does that for you. I think the best in the world are able to do that when the moment doesn’t give it to you.”

    Rocchio Continues “Rocctober” Legacy

    For Rocchio, the narrative was strikingly similar. Before the doubleheader, he owned a .177/.218/.252 slash line since the All-Star break. On Thursday afternoon, he struck out with runners on the corners, smacked his bat, and slammed it into the ground in frustration. He later sought guidance from veteran teammates Austin Hedges and Nathaniel Lowe, who assured him his fortunes would change.

    They did. Rocchio became the sixth player in league history, per Elias, to hit a walk-off home run after hitting a grand slam earlier in the same game. In his three years in the big leagues, Rocchio has developed a penchant for supplying pivotal doses of power when the crisp autumn air arrives, earning the personas of “Rocctember,” “Rocctober,” and “Playoff Rocchio” from fans and teammates.

    “I think he’s just got the gene,” Guardians pitcher Slade Cecconi said.

    Rocchio yanked the tying grand slam over the fence in right field and clubbed the game-winner over the 19-foot wall in left. As he took off on his trot with teammates spilling out of the home dugout, he flung his bat as high as the U.S. Navy Blue Angels jets that spent the day zooming and twirling overhead, forcing catchers to re-enter their PitchCom selections.

    “That’s a big moment for me,” Rocchio said.

    Wild-Card Implications and Upcoming Schedule

    The day was full of such moments for the Guardians, who have left themselves little margin for error this month as they vie for one of two entryways into the October bracket. They are trying to stave off the Toronto Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles, and Texas Rangers in the wild-card race. Cleveland does not own the tiebreaker against Toronto or Texas, and they head to Baltimore for a three-game set starting Monday. They also can still catch the White Sox, but they will need to conquer them at Progressive Field in a week and a half.

    All of that seemed flimsy throughout the day Friday, until four mighty swings from the two players who needed them most.

    “Good players step up,” Vogt said. “It doesn’t matter what you did yesterday. It doesn’t matter what you’ve been doing the last week, two weeks. All that matters is today.”

    Home Prices Are Falling the Fastest in These Cities

    While the U.S. housing market cools into a seasonal late-summer transition, price drops are hitting some metropolitan areas much harder than others—and not necessarily where observers might expect. High mortgage rates and shifting local supply-and-demand dynamics have driven down list prices nationwide, though the pace of decline slowed in August compared to previous months. Sellers are trending toward more realistic pricing, and the market is seeing broader price corrections. Metro areas that experienced explosive growth during the COVID-19 pandemic are now recording some of the deepest cuts in price per square foot.

    National Price Trends Show Broad Correction

    In August, the price per square foot—a metric that controls for the size of homes on the market—decreased year over year for the tenth consecutive month. Nationally, housing prices per square foot are down 1.8% year over year. Median list prices fell annually in three of four regions: the Northeast dropped 3.6%, the South declined 2.6%, and the West fell 2.1%, while the Midwest remained flat. At the metro level, the median list price per square foot fell in 36 of the top 50 metros in August, another sign that it’s game over for unrealistic seller demands.

    Metro Areas with Steepest Price-per-Square-Foot Declines

    The largest price-per-square-foot declines in August were in Austin, TX (-8.1%); Tampa, FL (-5.6%); and Memphis, TN (-4.1%). The largest gains appeared in Providence, RI (+9.3%); Indianapolis (+4.4%); and Chicago (+3.6%). Among the 50 biggest metro areas, the following recorded the biggest annual declines in listing price per square foot:

    Pandemic Boomtowns Lead Pullbacks

    Realtor.com® senior economist Jake Krimmel says some of this market shift in these cities may be due to continual readjustment following the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “One common thread for most markets—including Austin, Tampa, San Antonio, Denver—is 2020–22 boomtowns continuing to give back some of their pandemic-era gains. These are also, by and large, places with much more inventory now than pre-pandemic norms,” he says.

    San Francisco’s Unique Dynamics

    One outlier is San Francisco, where the market saw a 3.9% decrease in price-per-square-foot costs despite its status as an ultracompetitive market. In July 2026, active listings fell 16.3% from the previous year, tightening the housing market further. While the median listing price remains high at $908,700, it has decreased by 5.2% year over year.

    Veronica Peter, a real estate agent with Compass serving the Fremont area on the southeastern edge of San Francisco near Silicon Valley, says the market is being affected by shifts in the tech industry. Many of her clients are quietly reeling as AI transforms their industry.

    “A huge portion of our workforce in Fremont holds tech-related jobs such as software engineers, data analysts, and web developers,” she tells Realtor.com.

    Many heavy tech hitters, including Oracle, Meta, Dell, Microsoft, and Amazon, have implemented quiet layoffs as they restructure with AI in mind. The encroaching instability in the tech workforce has meant that while the housing market has certainly not crashed, pricing [has] adjusted to meet buyers where they are today, she adds.

    At recent open houses, Peter has heard similar sentiments: tech workers are uncertain about their employment and feeling the strain of high interest rates. Many also invested heavily in tech stocks, which have slumped this year.

    “A softer stock market depleted the funds buyers were planning to use for their down payments,” she says.

    Home listing prices are down in San Francisco, but it may be due more to the type of homes hitting the market than weak demand.

    Inventory Shifts Drive Pricing Adjustments

    There’s been a marked shift in the housing inventory in the metro area, Krimmel adds.

    “It’s not about San Francisco homes losing value, but rather how expensive the available inventory is this year relative to last,” he says. “There are fewer small, pricey homes in the center of the city for sale. They are scarce and selling fast. On the flip side, this year there are relatively more large, less expensive per-square-foot homes coming up for sale in outer suburbs,” he says.

    Silver Lining for Buyers

    Real estate experts note that these downward adjustments offer a welcome silver lining for prospective buyers who have felt sidelined by affordability constraints over the past few years. As active inventory continues to build nationally—climbing toward levels not seen since late 2019—sellers in these cooling markets are increasingly forced to reevaluate their pricing strategies to attract a more selective pool of financially qualified buyers. Whether these double-digit or near-double-digit pullbacks represent a temporary normalization or the beginning of a broader regional shift will depend heavily on local economic momentum and upcoming changes in mortgage rates as the autumn buying season approaches.

    Category 1 Hurricane Marie, Category 3 Hurricane Karina, and Category 4 Hurricane Lowell are all spinning in the Pacific simultaneously. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), having three hurricanes at once is highly unusual; the annual average is only eight Pacific hurricanes total. This phenomenon last occurred in 2015, when three Category 4 hurricanes existed concurrently.

    The NHC notes significant uncertainty regarding Hurricane Lowell’s potential track, making it too early to determine any impacts on Hawaii. Meanwhile, Hurricanes Marie and Karina are expected to remain over open waters with no current threat to land.

    Atlantic Hurricane Season Remains Historically Quiet

    In stark contrast, the Atlantic basin has not produced a single hurricane so far this season. This marks only the eighth year since satellite monitoring began around 1960 that the Atlantic has entered September without a hurricane formation. Forecast models indicate continued quiet conditions for at least the next seven days.

    This lull creates a possibility of breaking the record for the latest first Atlantic hurricane formation, currently held by September 11 in both 2002 and 2013.

    Tropical Storm Edouard Impacts Gulf Coast

    While the Atlantic lacks hurricanes, Tropical Storm Edouard made landfall in Louisiana at 11:25 UTC (12:25 BST) on September 1. The storm brought strong wind gusts, heavy rainfall, and flooding primarily to southwestern Louisiana and southeastern Texas. The highest recorded wind gust reached 69 mph at the Beaumont/Port Arthur airport.

    Impacts included widespread power outages and school closures. Flash flooding remains a continuing risk across east-central Texas throughout the week.

    Extreme Heat Grips Southern Texas

    Separate from tropical weather, parts of Texas are under an extreme heat warning. Heat index values—which measure how hot conditions feel when humidity combines with air temperature—have reached 46°C (114.8°F) at the state’s southern tip. The National Weather Service has identified heat-related illnesses as the primary health concern.

    Europe Records Warmest Summer on Record

    Across the Atlantic, Europe has just concluded its warmest summer since records began. The United Kingdom, France, and Belgium have all shattered mean temperature records by significant margins.     “You’re going to different realms, of course,” Gibson told The Christian Post. “I mean, you’ll be in the firmament before the creation. You’ll be in the Hell of the just, and then you’ll be in the Hell of the damned. And so it jumps around a little bit. It doesn’t just stay on the planet here. It gets around.”

    Filling Gaps Left by Synoptic Accounts

    Gibson explained that the screenplay draws on narrative gaps in the biblical record, particularly the synoptic Gospels.

    “If you look at the synoptic Gospels and they are synoptic, which means they don’t tell you everything,” Gibson said. “And even John says, ‘Y’know, hey, there were many other things [Jesus] said and did which, if they were to be written down, couldn’t fill all the libraries of all the world,’ right? So there’s a lot of stuff that wasn’t written and the Gospels are synoptic.”

    Rather than contradicting scripture, Gibson said he used those omissions as creative license to explore possibilities within orthodox Christian teaching.

    “One can look at these things and go, ‘I wonder what was around that?’ and try and analyze those things and make suppositions about what might have been,” he said. “Not to go against anything in orthodox teaching but to enhance, I think, what’s there for everyone to see and hopefully they’ll be surprised by some of those revelations.”

    Budget Jump Enables Larger Visual Ambition

    The sequel’s production budget is expected to reach approximately $200 million total — roughly $100 million per film — despite lacking major Hollywood studio backing. Gibson said the increased funding expanded the filmmakers’ technical capabilities.

    “Of course, we had more funding to play with, so you have more toys, more tools, and you’re able to do bigger and better things with it,” he said.

    Focus on Apostles’ Post-Resurrection Journeys

    The story will not center exclusively on the resurrection event itself but will examine the aftermath, including the experiences of Jesus’ followers.

    “I think that these films will be even more of an inspiring nature, because you get to see all the happier bits, and then not so happy bits,” he said. “I mean, it wasn’t all beer and Skittles for the apostles; they had to go through some stuff, but they triumph, and so it should be inspiring, uplifting.

    “And I hope that the audience can see and feel that, that it was worth it.”

    Noah Jupe has joined the cast of Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars in a secret role, sources tell Deadline. The casting news comes as Marvel prepares to unveil Avengers: Doomsday in the coming months, with the next chapter in the franchise expected to begin production later this year.

    Marvel had no comment on Jupe joining the cast.

    Details about Jupe’s character remain undisclosed, but the role is expected to play a key part in the story. Anthony and Joe Russo are directing Avengers: Secret Wars, with Marvel President Kevin Feige producing.

    Avengers: Secret Wars is scheduled to open on December 17, 2027.

    Noah Jupe’s Recent Projects

    Jupe most recently starred opposite Sadie Sink in the West End revival of Romeo & Juliet, earning rave reviews over the summer. Sink also recently made her Marvel debut as Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

    On the film side, Jupe starred in the Oscar-winning Focus Features movie Hamnet. He also recently appeared opposite Tom Hiddleston in the second season of The Night Manager.
