  • Grindr Pays £26 Million to Settle UK Lawsuit Over Alleged Sharing of Users’ HIV Status

Grindr Pays £26 Million to Settle UK Lawsuit Over Alleged Sharing of Users’ HIV Status

Grindr has agreed to pay £26 million to settle a class-action lawsuit brought by thousands of UK users who alleged the dating app shared highly sensitive personal data—including HIV status—with advertising companies. The settlement concludes a two-year legal battle initiated in April 2024, when London law firm Austen Hays filed a claim at the High Court of England and Wales on behalf of 12,000 users. The claim alleged violations of UK privacy laws during a period ending in early 2020.

    Compensation Details and Timeline

If the £26 million is distributed equally, each of the 12,000 claimants would receive an average of £2,167. Under the terms of the settlement, Grindr will pay £13 million by the end of 2025 and a further £13 million by the end of March 2027.

    Grindr’s Response and Regulatory Filing

In a US regulatory filing, the California-based company stated it had resolved the UK group action related to what it described as “historical data practices before 2020”, a period when Grindr was owned and controlled by Chinese gaming company Beijing Kunlun Tech.

The company said: “The settlement includes no findings or admission of liability. While Grindr disputes the allegations, it recognises and acknowledges the distress and loss of trust expressed by some of its UK users regarding that pre-2020 period.”

    Ownership History and Corporate Evolution

Founded in 2009 to facilitate connections for gay men, Grindr now describes itself as the world’s largest dating app for gay, bi, trans, and queer people, with nearly 15 million users globally. Six years ago, the app was sold to investment group San Vicente Acquisition in a $608 million deal following intervention by a US government national security panel, which raised concerns that personal data of US users could be accessed by the Chinese government.

In 2022, Grindr went public on the New York Stock Exchange via a merger with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC), valuing the business at $2.1 billion (£1.55 billion). The company’s current valuation stands at approximately $2.65 billion (£1.96 billion).

    Privacy Overhaul and Current Commitments

According to the regulatory filing, Grindr has “overhauled its privacy programme since 2020, with a keen focus on the unique needs of its community”. The company added: “Grindr is and remains a safe space for users, committed to transparency, user control and responsible data practices.”

    Legal Representation Statement

Austen Hays’ parent firm, Gateley, issued a statement noting: “While Grindr disputes the allegations, it recognises and acknowledges the distress and loss of trust expressed by some of its UK users regarding that pre-2020 period.

“We thank our clients for trusting us with this sensitive case.”

    Previous Regulatory Actions

This settlement follows earlier regulatory scrutiny. In April 2018, Grindr announced it would stop sharing users’ HIV status with third-party companies after a report by Norwegian researchers exposed data sharing with two firms.

In 2021, Norway’s data protection authority fined Grindr 65 million Norwegian krone (£4.8 million)—equivalent to 10% of its global revenues—for violating data protection rules. Grindr appealed, but Norway’s court of appeal upheld the decision and fine in October 2024.

The appellate court concluded that Grindr’s claim that it did “‘not sell your personal user information to third parties for advertising purposes’ is clearly misleading”, given the company shared user data for advertising purposes.

Headquartered in West Hollywood, Grindr continues to operate as a major platform for the LGBTQ+ community while navigating the ongoing fallout from its historical data practices.

  • Four Biggest Questions Facing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens

Four Biggest Questions Facing Lamar Jackson and the Ravens

Ravens Face Key Questions as Minter Embraces Championship Expectations

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — In his first meeting with players, new Baltimore Ravens head coach Jesse Minter didn’t shy away from the franchise’s ultimate goal. He displayed the date, time, and location of the Super Bowl, making the standard clear from day one.

“I know what they want to accomplish,” Minter said. “I know what we’ve kind of set out as our goals. It’s really not about anything else. And so I think you go to work every day to try to put the team in position to be able to achieve those things. We know what the standards around this place have been and where we want to go.”

The oddsmakers agree. According to DraftKings, Baltimore is tied with the Buffalo Bills for the second-best Super Bowl odds (-1000) and matches the Los Angeles Rams with the highest projected win total at 11.5. Yet, despite the heightened expectations, the Ravens must resolve several critical roster questions before the season opener in Indianapolis.

Kicker Competition Heats Up Between Tyler Loop and Jake Moody

The most immediate concern is at kicker. Minter expects Tyler Loop to enter the regular season as the starter, but his preseason performance has invited competition. Loop missed three of eight field goal attempts in the preseason, prompting the Ravens to sign veteran Jake Moody to the practice squad.

“We have got to make kicks,” Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said. “[It gives us a] fresh set of legs to look at, evaluate, compare, see how it all works out. In the end, it is a performance business, right? Looking at it this preseason, we decided it was probably worthwhile to bring somebody else in to see how they look.”

Loop had built momentum with a strong training camp, seemingly moving past the missed kick in Pittsburgh that ended Baltimore’s 2025 season. However, he subsequently missed attempts from 49, 51, and 58 yards in preseason action. Moody offers a proven track record, going 18-of-20 (90%) last season for the Bears and Commanders, and possesses the leg strength for AFC North winters — highlighted by a 56-yard make in a 28-degree wind chill in Philadelphia.

“Coach I am ready for it. I understand what is going on, and I am going to accept this challenge.”

That was Loop’s response when special teams coordinator Anthony Levine informed him of Moody’s signing, signaling the rookie’s readiness to compete.

Pro Bowl Defensive Tackle Nnamdi Madubuike Nearing Return

The Ravens are optimistic that defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike will play within the first four games, which is why they avoided placing him on injured reserve. Madubuike is recovering from a career-threatening neck injury that sidelined him for the final 15 games of last season and required April surgery. His last game action was September 14, nearly a full year ago.

“I am probably more bullish on that right now than I even have been,” DeCosta said. “So, we feel really good about it.”

His ramp-up has been cautious; he participated in individual and positional drills throughout training camp before taking limited team reps last week.

“What that looks like for Week 1, I think it is still a day-to-day thing, I would say,” Minter said. “But, we certainly have seen some things that indicate great things ahead for Nnamdi.”

Madubuike’s return would fortify a pass rush that already features edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. From the start of 2023 until his injury, Madubuike’s 21.5 sacks led all NFL defensive tackles.

“I am as encouraged now as I have ever been about Nnamdi,” DeCosta said. “We are very excited when we look at him and what he brings on our defense.”

Center Battle: Jovaughn Gwyn vs. Ethan Pocic

With three-time Pro Bowl center Tyler Linderbaum departing for the Las Vegas Raiders, Baltimore has yet to name a starter. Minter indicated a decision between Jovaughn Gwyn and Ethan Pocic will come when players return Tuesday to begin Week 1 preparations.

“I feel confident that we will go into game week with that pecking order for Week 1,” Minter said.

The competition shifted when Danny Pinter, who appeared close to winning the job, suffered a season-ending right knee injury on August 20. Gwyn, the current front-runner, has only 11 offensive snaps across three NFL seasons. Pocic brings 97 career starts but is returning from a torn Achilles suffered in December.

“I feel really good about how both of those guys have responded with the reps we have given them, but that is where we are at right now,” Ravens offensive coordinator Declan Doyle said.

The team may employ a timeshare, with Gwyn starting early and Pocic taking over once fully recovered.

Rashod Bateman’s Suspension Looms as Legal Process Continues

Wide receiver Rashod Bateman’s status remains uncertain. He was arrested in June on family violence charges after allegedly smashing the windshield of a vehicle carrying his 3-month-old daughter and her mother. Under the NFL’s personal conduct policy, the baseline suspension for family violence violations is six games.

“It is obviously something that we are very disappointed about [and] that we have to deal with these kind of things,” DeCosta said. “I think right now, [it is] a little bit of a distraction at some points. … In these matters, we just really kind of sit back and wait for the league and for the authorities to kind of tell us what is going on. We will wait.”

Bateman, the team’s No. 2 receiver, continues to practice. If he is sidelined, rookie third-round pick Ja’Kobi Lane — a standout in training camp — would see an expanded role.

“We feel like we have got a young group of receivers — a bunch of guys that can make plays,” DeCosta said. “[I am] excited about that. We will just have to wait and see what happens.”

  • Ernest Harden Jr. Wins First Emmy for ‘The Pitt’ Role as Louie Cloverfield

Ernest Harden Jr. Wins First Emmy for ‘The Pitt’ Role as Louie Cloverfield

At 73, veteran character actor Ernest Harden Jr. claimed his first Emmy nomination and win on Sunday, taking home the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series trophy for his portrayal of Louie Cloverfield on HBO Max’s medical drama The Pitt. The victory marks a career milestone for a performer who has spent five decades in supporting roles and guest appearances.

Backstage Reaction: ‘I Am on Cloud 25’

Speaking backstage at the 78th Emmy Awards Night 2, held at the Peacock Theater on September 6, 2026, Harden struggled to contain his emotion.

“I am on cloud 25,” Harden Jr. said backstage. “I’m not saying this is a complete surprise because The Pitt is such a powerful show to come from, but just to get it in your hands is like unreal.”

Harden kept his eyes closed while accepting the award onstage. He dedicated the moment to his late parents.

“I wish my parents were here to see this, they would have been so proud,” he said.

He also thanked the series’ executive producers, including John Wells and star Noah Wyle, for the opportunity.

“They hired me and believed in my talent … and the reason I stayed around was because I was good,” he said.

    A Career Spanning Five Decades

Backstage, Harden reflected on a journey that began in 1974.

“I’ve been in the business since 1974, that’s the first time I ever spoke in a film; it was a movie called Three Days of the Condor with Robert Redford and Faye Dunaway,” he said about the Sydney Pollack feature released in 1975. “From then I’ve just been doing my thing, trying to work where I could. I got some beautiful breaks.”

Those breaks included a recurring role on the Norman Lear sitcom The Jeffersons from 1977 to 1979, followed by a leading role opposite Bette Davis in the 1980 TV movie White Mama. The film centered on a poor, elderly white woman (Davis) befriended by a neighborhood kid (Harden).

Accepting the Emmy onstage, Harden dedicated the award to Davis, who received an Emmy nomination for her performance in White Mama but did not win. Davis, a two-time Oscar winner, also holds an Emmy.

“We didn’t make it then but this one is for us!” Harden said.

‘The Pitt’ Marked His Largest TV Role

The Pitt represented the most substantial series role of Harden’s career, spanning 11 episodes across two seasons. The medical drama unfolds in real time, with each season covering a single shift.

Harden recounted the moment he learned his character would die in Season 2.

“One time I said to Noah, am I gonna die because all the wardrobe people and everybody’s stopping me and they’re crying and I’m saying, what’s going on? I plan on being here five years! That’s just five days in The Pitt world,” Harden said of the medical drama whose seasons take place over the course of a single shift each.

“Noah said, ‘Sit right here,’ and he said, ‘America’s gonna cry for you,’ and he wasn’t lying,” he added. “He just said, ‘Trust me.’”

    Competitive Field

Harden prevailed in a competitive Guest Actor in a Drama Series category that included fellow The Pitt guest actor Jeff Kober, Colman Domingo for Euphoria, Jeff Hiller for Pluribus, Jonathan Pryce for Slow Horses, and Bradley Whitford for The Diplomat.

Rams Expect Puka Nacua, Alaric Jackson to Play vs. 49ers

Rams Expect Puka Nacua, Alaric Jackson to Play in Season Opener Against 49ers

The Los Angeles Rams do not anticipate wide receiver Puka Nacua and left tackle Alaric Jackson facing suspension for Thursday’s season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia, despite ongoing legal matters for both players. Head coach Sean McVay confirmed the expectation Sunday.

McVay Confirms Availability for Week 1

“Yeah, absolutely,” McVay said when asked if he expected the pair to be able to face the Niners in Australia. “That’s what I’ve heard. I haven’t heard anything different.”

The comment aligns with a previous report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Aug. 30, which indicated neither player would be placed on the commissioner exempt list that day, though both cases remained under NFL review.

    Legal Situations Remain Under Review

Nacua and Jackson have each been involved in separate legal proceedings this offseason:

    • Puka Nacua: In March, a woman in Los Angeles filed a lawsuit alleging Nacua made an “unprovoked antisemitic statement” toward her and later bit her on the shoulder.
    • Alaric Jackson: In June, Jackson was arrested on a domestic violence charge. He was not charged with a felony. In July, his case was referred to the Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office and assigned to a pre-filing diversion program—an alternative to misdemeanor criminal prosecution for eligible individuals.

At the start of training camp, McVay acknowledged both situations were ongoing and said the team had been in contact “with both the legal system and the league to be able to get all the necessary information.”

Aaron Donald, Myles Garrett Practice Status

McVay did not yet say whether defensive tackle Aaron Donald—who came out of retirement last week after two seasons—would play against the 49ers. McVay confirmed Donald will practice Sunday.

“We’re truly taking it a day at a time,” McVay said. “I’ll have all those injury updates and stuff like that for you on Tuesday.”

Defensive end Myles Garrett, the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, will also practice Sunday after missing most of training camp due to knee soreness.

  • Byron Murphy II Could Be Seahawks’ Next Big Payday

Byron Murphy II Could Be Seahawks’ Next Big Payday

Seattle Seahawks defensive tackle Byron Murphy II enters the 2026 NFL season with a clear objective: translate elite production into the league-wide recognition he believes he has earned. Despite posting numbers in his second campaign that rivaled Pro Bowl selections, Murphy remains a relative unknown outside the Pacific Northwest—a reality he intends to change.

Murphy Targets Elite Benchmarks for Breakout Year

The 2025 season saw Murphy take a significant leap forward. After a rookie year in 2024 that yielded 36 total tackles and two tackles for loss as a rotational piece, he emerged as a full-time disruptor. He finished the campaign with 62 total tackles, 13 quarterback hits, seven tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Notably, he achieved this while primarily aligning at the one-technique position, where he consistently absorbed double teams.

For 2026, Murphy has set specific, ambitious targets: a Pro Bowl nod, an All-Pro selection, and double-digit sacks. He acknowledges the perception that he is undervalued, attributing it partly to playing on the West Coast and avoiding off-field controversy.

Murphy states he wants to be a more aggressive pass rusher from the interior. The Seahawks’ defensive scheme offers a pathway to that goal, with packages designed to move him to the three-technique alignment. That shift would create more one-on-one matchups against offensive linemen, allowing him to utilize the improved speed, athleticism, and separation moves he has refined this offseason rather than relying solely on power.

National Media Takes Note of Extension Potential

The conversation surrounding Murphy’s future compensation has migrated from local circles to the national stage. ESPN reporter Dan Graziano believes Murphy could be the first and biggest candidate for a lucrative extension following a third-year breakout. This projection follows a Seahawks offseason that already rewarded young core pieces: wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, cornerback Devon Witherspoon, edge rusher Derick Hall, defensive tackle Leonard Williams, and offensive tackle Charles Cross all signed long-term deals.

Those extensions established a framework for retaining homegrown talent. While Murphy is not eligible for a new contract until the 2027 offseason, a dominant 2026 season would position him at the front of the queue.

Championship Defense Fueled by Perceived Disrespect

The backdrop for Murphy’s individual pursuit is a unit that finished the regular season as the NFL’s top-ranked scoring defense. Dubbed the “Dark Side Defense,” the group propelled Seattle to a Super Bowl LX victory over the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium. Despite the championship, players and coaches feel the organization lacks proper acknowledgement across the league.

That collective chip on the shoulder aligns with Murphy’s personal motivation. As the anchor of the interior line, his development is central to sustaining the defense’s elite status. A more determined, versatile Murphy elevates a unit that has no intention of relinquishing its standard.

Is Carlos Alcaraz Dating Claudia Canals? Tennis Star’s Romance Rumors Explained

Carlos Alcaraz Dating Rumors: What We Know About Claudia Canals

Spanish tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has returned to the 2026 US Open, reigniting interest not only in his pursuit of another Grand Slam title but also in his personal life. Speculation has intensified around a potential relationship with Claudia Canals, a Barcelona-based entrepreneur, though neither party has confirmed the rumors.

    How the Dating Rumors Started

The speculation began in July 2026 when photographs surfaced showing Alcaraz and Canals together on a yacht during the player’s summer break along the Amalfi Coast in Italy. Spanish media outlets subsequently identified Canals as the woman accompanying the tennis champion.

According to reports from Spain, the pair had known each other since early summer and had spent time together. However, the yacht outing included a group of friends, meaning the images alone do not confirm a romantic relationship. As of early September 2026, Alcaraz remains officially single, and neither he nor Canals has issued a public statement regarding their connection. Media outlets continue to describe Canals as his rumored girlfriend rather than a confirmed partner.

    Who Is Claudia Canals?

Canals is a Spanish entrepreneur and digital marketing professional from Barcelona. She founded CC Studio, a business specializing in content creation, social media strategy, and brand development. Her Instagram account, which has amassed over 45,000 followers, features lifestyle and fashion content. The July 2026 photos with Alcaraz brought her wider international recognition beyond Spain.

    Context: Alcaraz’s Return from Injury

The timing of the speculation coincides with Alcaraz’s recovery from a wrist injury that sidelined him for several months during the 2026 season. The extended layoff provided the world No. 1 with an unusual off-court break before his return to competitive tennis. Throughout his rehabilitation, Alcaraz has maintained privacy regarding his personal life while fans and media have closely monitored the rumors.

Focus Shifts Back to the Court

With the 2026 US Open underway, attention returns to Alcaraz’s quest to defend his title. The 23-year-old Spaniard enters the tournament after a challenging season interrupted by injury, aiming to add a third Grand Slam championship to his resume. For now, Claudia Canals remains linked to Alcaraz only through unverified reports, with no official confirmation from either side.

Jannik Sinner Reaches US Open Final on Championship Sunday

Defending Wimbledon champion and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner is a notable absence from the 2026 US Open as he continues to recover from a knee injury. The Italian’s absence marks a significant shift from recent Grand Slam tournaments, where fans grew accustomed to seeing Sinner and his primary rival, Carlos Alcaraz, compete for major titles. The 2026 season has deviated from that script; only the Australian Open featured both stars, with Alcaraz subsequently missing the French Open and Wimbledon due to a wrist injury before Sinner withdrew from Flushing Meadows.

Sinner Spotted at Italian Grand Prix

Despite his absence from the hard courts in New York, Sinner made a public appearance on Saturday at the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. The Sinner family are known enthusiasts of the historic race, which originated in 1921. The top-ranked player attended the event alongside his father, taking time to graciously sign autographs for fans.

    Positive Update on Knee Injury

When questioned regarding his physical condition, Sinner offered a brief but encouraging assessment. He stated his knee “is fine”. While the news is positive, the typically reserved player declined to use the motorsport event as a platform to elaborate on the specific status of his rehabilitation, preferring to enjoy the race.

    Berrettini Confirms Sinner’s Good Spirits

Sinner was not the only prominent Italian tennis figure at the circuit. Matteo Berrettini, who suffered a second-round loss to Mariano Navone at the US Open on September 2, was also in attendance. Berrettini confirmed that he and Sinner arrived at the venue together and reported that all is well with his compatriot.

Italian Hopes Rest on Darderi in New York

Back at the US Open, the Italian contingent in the men’s draw has dwindled unexpectedly. Many anticipated Flavio Cobolli would be the last Italian man standing, but he suffered a shocking four-set defeat against Alexander Blockx on Saturday. That result leaves Luciano Darderi as the sole remaining Italian in the tournament. Darderi faces a formidable test on Monday, September 7, against top seed Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16.

  • Tennessee to Execute Child Rape Victim Despite Death Penalty Law for Abusers

Tennessee to Execute Child Rape Victim Despite Death Penalty Law for Abusers

The video is timestamped March 30, 1996. It shows the back of a young woman’s head, her auburn hair held in a white scrunchie. She is crying quietly as a female judge reads the sentence. It is ordered that you shall be put to death by execution as prescribed by law, the judge says. The woman’s shoulders begin to quiver, and her weeping intensifies. Your body shall be subjected to shock by sufficient current of electricity that you shall die. May God have mercy upon you. The woman turns toward the camera, urgently searching for her mother seated a few rows behind her. Her almost childlike face is peppered with acne. Can I please hug my mom before I go, she wails. Please, just let me have a hug. I love you. Those are her last words before she is taken away, denied that hug, to death row. She would spend nearly the next 30 years in solitary confinement.

    The crime and the sentence

Christa Pike had just turned 20 in the video. She was 18 on the night of January 12, 1995, when she and her then-boyfriend, Tadaryl Shipp, brutally beat and murdered an acquaintance, Colleen Slemmer, 19, on a University of Tennessee campus. The state of Tennessee has deemed Pike, now 50, to be among the “worst of the worst” — a cold-blooded murderer whose crime was so heinous that even life imprisonment would be too lenient. She is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on September 30.

Only three women have been executed by Tennessee since the state’s founding in 1796, at least two of whom were enslaved people. The most recent execution of a woman occurred more than 200 years ago, in 1819.

Clemency petition highlights age, gender, and abuse

On Wednesday, Pike’s lawyers filed a 226-page clemency petition with Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Lee. The mercy plea reframes Pike’s story, beginning with her age at the time of the offense. In the modern era of the U.S. death penalty, Tennessee has never executed a person who was 18 at the time of their crime — the youngest was 23. Over the past 50 years, the state sent seven men who were 18 when they committed murder to death row, but in each case the sentence was vacated.

Shipp, Pike’s accomplice, held a fascination with satanic imagery; he carved a pentagram in the victim’s chest, sparking a media frenzy. Because he was 17 at the time, he was barred from execution under Tennessee law; today he is serving a life sentence and had his first, unsuccessful, parole hearing in October 2025.

Sandra Babcock, faculty director of the Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide and involved in Pike’s representation since 2019, has studied the cases of 48 women on death rows across the United States. She told the Guardian: If they execute Christa Pike, it will confirm that the death penalty is reserved not for the worst of the worst, but for the most damaged and vulnerable among us.

A childhood marked by severe sexual abuse

The petition details a harrowing history of abuse. A forensic evaluation conducted in 2023 by Bethany Brand, a psychology professor at Towson University, documents repeated sexual violence beginning when Pike was a toddler. Brand spent 13 hours interviewing Pike at the Debra Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, which houses the state’s female death row — Pike is its only resident.

The abuse began around age two, perpetrated by Ernest Johnson, the boyfriend of Pike’s paternal grandmother. An alcoholic who drank all day, Johnson sent the grandmother out to buy liquor, then abused the child. Ernest orally raped her when she was in preschool, Brand noted. Christa showed utter disgust on her face as she spoke of the smell of this man’s genitals — she was extremely revolted by him, despite more than 30 years having passed. Johnson forced silence by threatening to hurt Pike’s pets, her grandmother, and Pike herself. Ernest locked Christa in a dark chicken coop where spiders crawled on her, Brand wrote.

The abuse surfaced at Pike’s elementary school when she sketched a large penis and a demon face in a drawing class — a cry for help that went unanswered. The teacher marched her to the principal’s office, her parents were called, but no investigation was ever conducted.

    Further rapes and systemic failures

At age 11, Pike was raped outside her home by a 37-year-old neighbor, Claude Davis, a known pedophile. She told her mother but was disbelieved. Child protective services became involved only after Pike developed an infection. Davis pleaded guilty to taking “immoral, improper and indecent liberties” with a child, received a suspended sentence, and returned to his trailer a few minutes’ walk from Pike’s home.

In January 1994, nearly a year before the murder, 17-year-old Pike was attacked by a stranger while walking to a store. He dragged her into the woods and raped her in the dark. She fought back, hitting his head with a rock, and escaped. A rape kit was collected at the hospital, but the assailant was never identified.

All three rapes — in infancy, at 11, and at 17 — were known to authorities. In the latter two instances, law enforcement documented the crimes. Yet little was done to protect or treat her. As a young girl, she was truly on her own, without loving support, treatment or protection, Brand writes.

Trial counsel failed to present mitigation

At trial, Pike was convicted of first-degree murder. The jury’s only decision was between life without parole and the death penalty. None of the documented sexual abuse was presented in mitigation. Pike’s lawyer was four months out of law school and had never tried a murder case, let alone a capital one. In closing, counsel made no mention of Pike’s youth — a recognized mitigating factor under Tennessee law — nor her lack of a significant criminal record.

Kelleigh Gleason, one of Pike’s clemency lawyers, told the Guardian: None of the rapes, none of the sexual abuse as a child, were introduced. Trial counsel were aware of most of that — it was documented by law enforcement — but they chose not to use it.

The jury also never heard of years of physical abuse and neglect: being forced by her great-aunt Norma to sit in a bathtub of cold water for hours, beaten with an improvised leather whip by one of her five stepfathers, and exposed as a preteen to hours of pornography. They did not know she attempted suicide at least three times as a child, the first at age 12. They were unaware that in early adolescence she developed bipolar disorder, a condition that periodically erupted in manic bursts that could have helped explain her violent explosion. The disorder was diagnosed only years after the trial.

Pike described the manic spells to Brand: My hair and skin hurt, I’m rocking, my skin is crawling. I want to claw my face off. I claw and claw and claw the skin on my legs to the point of bleeding. It feels like bugs are crawling under my skin.

Petition argues Pike is ‘broken, not evil’

The clemency petition synthesizes these details and presents Governor Lee with a choice. It does not seek forgiveness or freedom. It states plainly that Pike chose to participate in the circumstances which spiraled out of control and led to Colleen Slemmer’s death. For that she should be punished severely, by spending the rest of her life behind bars. What it argues is that Pike is not the “worst of the worst.” Christa was broken, not evil, the petition says. She was broken by a mental health, juvenile, and criminal justice system that ignored, misdiagnosed, and mistreated her at every turn.

Tennessee has not disputed any of the abuse details. At a recent hearing, an attorney for the state, Will Ayers, said: I think everybody in this courtroom wishes that those things had never happened to Ms Pike. We all wish that we were not here today and that she was not on death row.

Governor Lee’s clemency record and a contradictory law

The decision now rests with Governor Lee, who has the power to commute Pike’s sentence to life without parole. Doing so would be unprecedented for his administration. Lee has never granted clemency in a death case, Gleason said, referring to the many previous appeals that have crossed his desk. He is zero for eight.

In May 2024, Lee signed legislation extending the death penalty in Tennessee to cover those who rape a child — a move widely viewed as unconstitutional because the U.S. Supreme Court has long prohibited executions for crimes in which no one is murdered. Lawmakers argued that child rapists deserve the ultimate punishment because the damage they inflict has a permanent psychological, emotional, and sometimes physical impact on the child. Now, Tennessee is days away from executing a victim of multiple child rapes.

    Decades in solitary confinement

Since the 1996 video of Pike wailing for her mother, she has spent nearly three decades in solitary confinement, held in an 8-by-10-foot cell for up to 24 hours a day. As the only woman on Tennessee’s death row, her isolation was near total — a far more restrictive regime than that for male condemned prisoners. On rare occasions when she encountered other people, her notoriety preceded her; she was leered at and objectified as a female killer. She felt, she said, like a “ballerina kept in a box.”

Two years ago, she won a lawsuit that slightly eased her conditions. She can now spend a few hours with one or two other female prisoners outside her cell. Her lawyers say she is doing well: she is finally being treated for the long-undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and her extreme mood swings are under control. The clemency petition describes her as “thoughtful, even-tempered, bright, funny, and hopeful.” She shows deep remorse for Slemmer’s death and has become a mentor to new arrivals in her prison unit, offering guidance and support.

    Counting down to execution

Despite her improved mental health, Pike struggles with the impending execution. Her execution date was set a year in advance — September 30, 2025 — and since then she has had to negotiate every milestone. Gleason said: She had to think, ‘Is this my last Thanksgiving?’ ‘Is this my last Christmas, how am I going to spend it?’ She turned 50 in March, and it was, ‘Is this my last birthday?’

If last-minute legal challenges fail and the execution proceeds, Pike’s lawyers have requested that only female corrections staff be present in the death chamber. The state of Tennessee has declined to guarantee that. She faces the possibility of being pinned down on the gurney by men who will pierce her restrained body to find a vein for the lethal injection — a terrifying prospect for a survivor of multiple male violations inflicted on her as a child. Only this time, there will be no prospect of healing.
