What Lando Norris’ Contract Extension Means for McLaren and Oscar Piastri

McLaren has secured Lando Norris on a long-term contract that will keep the reigning Formula 1 world champion with the Woking-based team until 2030, with options for multiple additional years. The deal is expected to reflect Norris’ status as one of F1’s leading drivers and takes him into his 30s with McLaren.

The 26-year-old’s contract removes one of the biggest names from the Formula 1 driver market for years to come, making Norris a bona fide franchise driver for McLaren. The idea of seeing him in a different-coloured race suit has always seemed difficult to imagine, and this agreement makes that prospect even less likely.

Norris joined McLaren’s driver programme a decade ago after being recruited by Zak Brown. He progressed through the junior single-seater ranks with Carlin before replacing Stoffel Vandoorne as McLaren’s grand prix driver in 2019, joining a new generation of British-born talent that included George Russell and Alex Albon.

After developing from a fast but raw and insecure prospect into a championship-winning star, Norris enjoyed a defining 2025 season. He overcame driving-style difficulties, mechanical failures and the challenge posed by team-mate Oscar Piastri to claim his first Formula 1 world championship.

That achievement appeared to transform Norris’ outlook. Having once hoped he could fulfil his ambitions, he gained the confidence that he could actually achieve them.

“Lando is driving and operating at the level of a world champion,” team boss Andrea Stella said after Norris’ Zandvoort win. “What I like the most about his journey in Formula 1 is that he keeps improving. And I think especially after the start of the 2025 season, something clicked, which is not only a single click, but is a way of working with Lando and that we are adopting also on Oscar’s side now in particular. And I think this approach has led Lando to continuous improvements.”

McLaren prioritises stability ahead of the 2027 F1 season

McLaren’s decision to commit to Norris reflects its desire for stability as Formula 1 teams contend with the complexity of the 2026 power unit regulations. The team has agreed to pay an undisclosed but reportedly substantial sum to retain its most successful driver since Lewis Hamilton.

At 26, Norris is entering the prime years of his career. Keeping him under contract gives McLaren continuity as it works to overcome a relatively slow start to the 2026 season. His two victories either side of the summer break suggest the team is beginning to make progress.

The quiet driver market further underlines the value teams are placing on stability. With resources stretched by the demands of the 2026 regulations, teams are keen to eliminate as many uncertainties as possible, provided their drivers are delivering strong performances.

When Max Verstappen, the dominant figure in the F1 silly season, chose to remain with Red Bull, the 2027 grid was always likely to resemble this year’s line-up. Charles Leclerc has also reaffirmed his commitment to Ferrari, while Mercedes is expected to seek similar long-term continuity with its drivers, particularly Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

Speaking to Motorsport.com, Ferrari team boss Fred Vasseur explained the value of Leclerc’s long-term relationship with Maranello: “Having this kind of continuity is always positive. For me it’s also much easier to work with drivers that I have known for ages. Sometimes you don’t need to discuss [something] when you have known someone for 10, 15 or 20 years, when the first feeling is the good one, and you know what he’s thinking.”

The relationship between Norris and McLaren is built on a similar level of mutual trust and understanding, benefiting both the driver and the team.

What does Lando Norris’ deal mean for Oscar Piastri?

Norris’ high-profile contract is likely to prompt close attention from Oscar Piastri and his management team. The Australian extended his McLaren contract to 2028 at the start of the 2025 championship and appeared to be in control of the title fight until a combination of declining performance, driver errors, team mistakes and bad luck left him behind both Norris and Verstappen.

The outcome was a major setback for Piastri. Concerns about team orders and McLaren’s rules of engagement during the 2025 campaign may also influence how he views Norris’ long-term agreement. Controversial incidents included a position swap at the Italian Grand Prix and contact between the two team-mates in Singapore and Austin.

Those who believe McLaren is, and always will be, Norris’ team are likely to view the extension as confirmation of that perception. Piastri, however, has more immediate concerns.

After an exceptionally strong first half of the 2025 season, the 25-year-old has endured an extended dip in performance with the 2026-generation cars. His struggles appear similar to the driving-style problems he experienced last year on low-grip circuits such as Austin and Mexico.

Team principal Stella said Piastri’s issues are “purely technical” rather than mental, whether they are connected to the end of 2025 or the start of 2026. Piastri is set to reach a full calendar year without a grand prix victory on Monday.

McLaren is working with Piastri behind the scenes on changes to both the car and his driving style, following an approach similar to the one that helped Norris last year. If those efforts succeed, McLaren could have both of its leading drivers back at their best for a closely contested second half of 2026 and a potential title challenge in 2027.

McLaren’s long-term objective remains to have both drivers competing against each other for race wins and championships. That could lead to Piastri following a similar path towards a contract extension, although his management team must decide whether remaining with McLaren is in his best interests or whether it is time to consider alternatives.

Piastri’s current contract runs until the end of 2028, giving him and McLaren time to assess their options. In the meantime, McLaren has its reigning world champion secured for the entire current rules cycle—one fewer uncertainty as the Woking team seeks to retain and strengthen its title-winning line-up.

  • Ferrari Urged to Support Lewis Hamilton as Guenther Steiner Warns of Team Orders

Ferrari Urged to Support Lewis Hamilton as Guenther Steiner Warns of Team Orders

Former Haas Formula 1 team principal Guenther Steiner believes Ferrari must establish clear rules of engagement and support Lewis Hamilton over Charles Leclerc if the team is to remain in contention for the 2026 Formula 1 championship.

Ferrari’s internal driver dynamic came under scrutiny after the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort, where contrasting strategies created tension between Hamilton and Leclerc. Hamilton was running on fresher tyres and had stronger pace, but was held up behind his Ferrari team-mate. The delay cost the seven-time world champion valuable time and led to frustrated radio complaints.

Steiner calls for clear Ferrari team orders

Speaking on The Red Flags Podcast, Steiner argued that Ferrari should have agreed on potential team orders before the race rather than trying to manage the situation during it.

“You cannot implement team orders during a race,” Steiner explained. “You need to agree them beforehand. The realistic thing is, can Charles really win the world championship? Maybe not. And who is in front? Lewis.

“I haven’t done the calculations of how realistic it is for him to win the world championship, but if one of the two can win, it is Lewis. So, as somebody else has shown, if you want to win, it’s very tight up front there. You need to put your money on the guy who has got the better chance.

“That’s the guy in front, who has got more points, and that is the only selling point to Charles. ‘Hey buddy, your team-mate has done better up to now. Now he’s number one.’”

Fred Vasseur must lead Ferrari’s championship strategy

Steiner said Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur is responsible for making the team’s position clear to both drivers and deciding whether one driver should receive priority in the title fight.

“Fred, that is his job,” he said. “I don’t think John Elkann should or would get involved in it because if he gets involved in that one at that stage, he needs to run the team.

“But I think Fred is very much in control of it because Fred needs to win a world championship.”

FBI Warns of 49ers Scam After Man Allegedly Stole $1.3 Million From Women

Federal investigators say a man allegedly posed as a San Francisco 49ers player and wealthy investor to gain the trust of women in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and California.

The FBI issued a warning after authorities arrested 35-year-old Daejon Labrayae Love, who allegedly helped operate a romance and investment scam involving approximately $1.3 million and 26 victims.

FBI details alleged 49ers impersonation scheme

Love and his alleged accomplice, 18-year-old Taylor Jamie Chan, have been charged in federal court in Portland with wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud.

“Beginning in February 2022, Daejon Labrayae Love, 35, and Taylor Jamie Chan, 18, created fictitious investments to defraud numerous women in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California,” the FBI said in a Twitter post.

Investigators say Love developed relationships with women he met online before presenting himself as a wealthy person with access to lucrative investment opportunities.

“Love met most of the women on the internet through dating apps. Love falsely portrayed himself as legitimately wealthy, often as an NFL player for the San Francisco 49ers or as a wealthy real estate investor.”

The FBI added: “Chan falsely posed as Love’s financial adviser to further gain the victims’ trust. The scheme lasted until the day of Love and Chan’s arrests on August 24.”

Authorities allege that Love used multiple identities, including Jon Love, Daejon Love, Avril Lyto Love and Jordan Love. He also reportedly operated an Instagram account under the name @2bcontinued_4, where he claimed to be an undrafted wide receiver for the 49ers.

Women allegedly targeted through romance and investment scam

According to investigators, the alleged fraud relied heavily on emotional manipulation. Love reportedly told women that he wanted to build a future and create wealth with them before directing them toward investments that authorities say did not exist.

Chan allegedly strengthened the scheme by posing as a financial adviser, sending messages about investment opportunities and joining three-way FaceTime calls that appeared to show profits.

Investigators also allege that victims who did not have available cash were encouraged to take out loans.

Arrest warrants and a criminal complaint were issued on August 17. Authorities later learned that Chan had travelled from California to meet Love in Boise, Idaho, where both were arrested on August 24.

Love and Chan appeared in court on August 27. The FBI is continuing to seek information about the case while investigators determine whether there are additional victims.

Katie Boulter Says Cannabis Smell at US Open Is Distracting

The smell of cannabis has become a recurring issue at the US Open, with players repeatedly raising concerns about smoking near the tournament grounds.

In 2022, Australian Open doubles champion Nick Kyrgios complained that a fan smoking courtside was triggering his asthma, prompting the umpire to ask spectators to refrain. Greece’s Maria Sakkari also pointed out the smell to an umpire midway through a set in 2023, although she later clarified that it was not an excuse for her defeat.

The United States Tennis Association, which organises the US Open, said it is working with local police and the parks department to reduce smoking around the boundary of the site.

It said: “While we can’t control what takes place off the grounds of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, we continue to be vigilant as we maintain this.”

Britain’s Fran Jones and Harriet Dart, who both qualified on Friday, have also noticed the smell.

“Last year I made a joke about that, in my first round, and I said to the guy, ‘is this normal?’” said Jones, whose tournament begins against Poland’s Magda Linette on Monday.

“Because I was on the stadium, and it’s next to the park. He’s like, ‘yeah”. and I was like: ‘Well, no wonder I’m playing pretty well.’”

“This year I’ll be like ‘no, lock in, lock in!’”

After beating British compatriot Heather Watson in qualifying to set up a first-round match against the United States’ Peyton Stearns, Dart said: “I mean it’s New York. It’s New York. “

“I feel like everywhere you walk around, it’s everywhere, no?”

“It is what it is. Same for everyone.”

Lando Norris’ McLaren Contract Extension Includes Detail F1 Fans Are Talking About

One detail of Lando Norris’s new McLaren contract extension has particularly impressed Formula 1 fans, who have described the agreement as “well deserved”.

The reigning F1 world champion has signed a contract extension that will keep him with McLaren until at least the end of 2030. As part of the deal, the 26-year-old will also receive the MCL39 chassis in which he secured his maiden drivers’ championship in 2025.

Norris made his McLaren debut in 2019 and has now started 163 grands prix for the Woking-based team, more than any other driver. The Briton’s career record includes 13 grand prix victories, 48 podium finishes, 18 pole positions, 20 fastest laps, 1,589 points and one drivers’ title.

“The perfect choice for both sides, Lando showed McLaren loyalty and it more than paid off with a title, so he deserves a new mega deal. He might possibly be a one-team guy for his career, and he might not be done winning titles either,”

    one fan commented on Reddit.

“Well deserved. I hope this comes with a big salary increase because he’s been one of the best drivers on the grid this season and has a title. He literally reminds me of Button after 2009 but with a higher skill ceiling.”

    Lando Norris’s championship-winning McLaren chassis

The decision to give Norris his championship-winning MCL39 quickly became a major talking point among fans.

“This is such a beautiful gesture from McLaren to give Lando the championship-winning car. Well-deserved extension with the loyalty he’s given them from the very beginning and paid off well with the title last year. Plus, with what he’s been doing so far this season, even with the reliability woes earlier in the year, he’s going to be competitive with them for much longer,”

    another fan wrote.

“Big fat contract extension and he’s being gifted his championship-winning car. What a day for the lad!”

someone else posted, while another commented:

Pep Guardiola’s Departure Triggers an Unprecedented Exodus at Manchester City

The arrival of Sheikh Mansour transformed Manchester City’s history. Since then, the club has won eight Premier League titles and, most notably, its first long-awaited Champions League trophy, after investing €3.39 billion in signings—second only to Chelsea’s €3.86 billion.

However, Pep Guardiola’s departure has triggered an exodus that is turning Manchester City’s transfer market into a record-breaking summer.

Manchester City’s record income from player sales

In recent years, Manchester City have also become an exemplary club in the way they offload assets to help finance new signings. Since the summer of 2022, the club have generated more than €100 million in player-sales income in every season.

The previous record came in 2022-23, when City collected €161.9 million from player departures. That figure has more than doubled during the current transfer window, reaching €336.9 million.

Pep Guardiola bids emotional farewell after 10 years at Manchester City

Enzo Maresca continues City’s rebuilding project

The appointment of Enzo Maresca took longer than expected because of legal matters awaiting resolution with Chelsea. His arrival was intended to continue the rebuilding process started under Guardiola, who had Maresca on his coaching staff during the 2022-23 season.

“He was the candidate who stood out the most in our evaluations. We know his personality and his vision of how football should be played. He is upright, charismatic, and passionate. In addition to his successes at Chelsea and Leicester, his track record at City speaks for itself,” explained Ferran Soriano, the club’s CEO.

“Probably the reason I’m here is also because the club’s idea is to maintain the same style and approach. But we’re going to try to do what matters most, which is to win,” pointed out Enzo Maresca, who also sought to distance himself from Guardiola.

“I’m not here to try to be a copy of anyone. Every coach is different. Probably, I don’t see football in the same way as the previous coach.”

I’m not here to try to be a copy of anyone

    — Enzo Maresca, Manchester City coach

Five of City’s 10 major departures arrived within two years

To some extent, the plan had been to continue moving on players from the 2023 treble-winning squad, including John Stones, Nathan Aké, Manuel Akanji, Bernardo Silva and even Rodri Hernández, who had one year remaining on his contract.

Nevertheless, Maresca has not opposed dismantling the squad assembled during the previous transfer windows. Five of Manchester City’s 10 major departures this summer involved players who had been at the club for less than two years.

Savinho has overtaken Julián Alvarez as the most expensive sale in Manchester City’s history, with the transfer valued at €88 million. Tijjani Reijnders, sold for €61 million, and Rodri, who moved for €60 million, have also entered the club’s top five biggest sales.

Looking at City’s 10 biggest transfers out, Nico González also features after his €56 million move. The list additionally includes James Trafford, who has become the most expensive English goalkeeper of all time after Leeds paid €47 million, and Marmoush, who joined Tottenham on loan with an obligation to buy—subject to conditions—set at €58 million.

    Manchester City’s most expensive sales:

    • Savinho: $87.7 million, Tottenham
    • Julián Alvarez: €75 million, Atlético de Madrid
    • Tijjani Reijnders: €61 million, Al Qadsiah
    • Rodri Hernández: €60 million, Barcelona
    • Raheem Sterling: €56.2 million, Chelsea
    • Nico González: €56 million, Newcastle
    • Ferran Torres: €55 million, Barcelona
    • Gabriel Jesus: €52 million, Arsenal
    • Leroy Sané: €49 million, Bayern Munich
    • Cole Palmer: $47 million, Chelsea

City have spent €274 million on new signings

The scale of Manchester City’s transfer income has overshadowed the fact that the club have spent €274 million on signings this summer. Only Chelsea (€398 million) and Tottenham (€354 million) have spent more.

Most of City’s spending has gone toward Elliot Anderson, the most expensive signing in the club’s history at €135 million, and Ayyoub Bouaddi, who has become the 18-year-old player for whom the highest transfer fee has ever been paid, at €95 million.

They have also signed Detourbet for €25 million before loaning him to Monaco after his arrival from City’s Troyes ‘affiliate’, as well as the highly rated young Jeremy Monga, born in 2009, Gero Rulli for €3.5 million and Pierce Charles for €3.5 million.

“It’s the market and anything can happen. We’ll see, there are still four or five days left. But, at this moment, it’s quite complicated for me to think about this,” he said ahead of the match against Crystal Palace.

He did, however, stress that he would like “to have two players for each position.” If that is not possible, Maresca will turn to the academy, where McAidoo, Floyd Samba and Kaden Braithwaite are pushing for opportunities.

It’s the market and anything can happen

    — Enzo Maresca, Manchester City coach

Manchester City still targeting late signings

Maresca is not satisfied with the squad, despite the first signs of progress in the match against Crystal Palace.

Allan, a winger from Palmeiras, is set to arrive after City agreed a €40 million transfer to fill the gap left by Savinho. Enzo Fernández could also become the major late-window signing, with a potential fee that would surpass Elliot Anderson’s and make him the most expensive signing in Manchester City’s history.

With four days remaining in the transfer window, fresh money is available in Manchester City’s Etihad coffers.

  • Lando Norris Signs New McLaren Contract Through 2030

Lando Norris Signs New McLaren Contract Through 2030

Lando Norris says extending his McLaren contract until at least the end of 2030 was “quite an easy yes for me”.

The reigning world champion’s new deal was announced on Saturday. Norris said he “didn’t even have a look” at offers from other Formula 1 teams before committing his future to McLaren, where he has raced since making his F1 debut in 2019.

“There was some interest from elsewhere,” Norris said in an interview with BBC Sport, “but I don’t want to go anywhere. I don’t want to be with another team. I don’t want to spend time with other people.”

“That’s why it really was probably one of the easiest decisions I’ve made since being in Formula 1.”

Norris chose McLaren despite outside interest

The 26-year-old was not under pressure to make an immediate decision, as his previous McLaren contract still had more than a year to run. However, he said discussions about a new agreement had gradually emerged in recent months and that he had no doubts about staying.

Norris said his loyalty to McLaren is rooted in the relationships he has developed within the team, including with chief executive officer Zak Brown and team principal Andrea Stella, as well as the shared journey they have experienced.

After Norris entered Formula 1 in 2019, McLaren spent several seasons struggling to compete at the front. The team’s performance improved rapidly after Stella became team principal at the end of 2022.

McLaren won consecutive constructors’ championships in 2024 and 2025, ending a title drought that had stretched back to 1998. Norris also secured the drivers’ championship last year.

“The fact I stuck it through with them and then we went on to obviously have success certainly makes me feel like I don’t want to… they didn’t give up on me and I didn’t give up on them.”

“That just creates a very strong bond between everyone that works here. I want to believe that bond stays as strong as it is now ’til I do retire in my career at Formula 1.”

“I know that’s a long, long way away and I don’t want to think of it. But I believe we’re in the best place we’ve ever been even with a tough start to the season. And I believe that we can fight through anything together for sure.”
