Haas Completes Latest TPC Test as Focus Grows on 2027 F1 Driver Lineup Decision
Haas has completed its latest Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) programme, with Ryo Hirakawa, Leonardo Fornaroli and Rafael Camara driving the team’s 2025 Formula 1 car as scrutiny of its 2027 driver line-up intensifies.
As the 2027 F1 driver market gathers pace following the summer break, Haas remains one of the few teams yet to formally settle its line-up for next season. Oliver Bearman appears likely to retain his seat, while Esteban Ocon’s future remains under review as Haas evaluates its available options.
Haas assesses 2027 driver options at Portimao
The American team conducted a three-day TPC test at Portimao from 26-28 August. Reserve driver Hirakawa shared driving duties with 2025 Formula 2 champion and McLaren development driver Fornaroli, as well as current F2 title contender and Ferrari junior Camara.
All three drivers completed laps in the VF-25, Haas’ 2025 F1 car, at the Portuguese circuit. The test followed a similar TPC programme at Fuji last month, where Toyota-backed drivers Sho Tsuboi and Nirei Fukuzumi were given running time.
Haas has not released further details about the Portimao test, but the programme forms part of its broader evaluation of interested drivers before the team makes a final decision on its 2027 line-up.

“I think it’s really good that other people are actually interested in us,” Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu said ahead of the Dutch GP last weekend.
“At the moment, we’re not performing so well. We cannot challenge for points, but I think it’s nice that other people can see the potential in us. Within the constraint how we’re fighting and we’re trying to improve the team. We just take it as a compliment that other drivers are interested.”
Komatsu has emphasised that his immediate priority is maximising the performance of Haas’ car and drivers in 2026, suggesting the team will not rush its decision on the future pairing.
Haas has frequently been among the last teams to confirm its driver line-up for the following season during its relatively short F1 history. With other teams expected to maintain stable driver line-ups for 2027, a similar timeline remains possible.
“We’re not in any rush,” Komatsu said at Zandvoort. “We’re focused on our two drivers, Ollie and Esteban, trying to get the best out of them. They’ve got the tough challenge, right? You know what they are capable of.
“Ollie has showed it repeatedly, Esteban, when he is happy with the car, you know what he can do. So we need to really just focus on providing them with the best possible car, best set-up adaptation, and get the best out of them. And then both of our drivers are fully focused. So at the moment, we’re focused on that.”

NFL legend Ryan Clark has urged the WNBA to publicly support Caitlin Clark and its other players as off-court debates continue to dominate coverage of the league.
Speaking on The Pivot podcast, Clark said the focus should return to the women competing on the court rather than controversies surrounding the WNBA.
Ryan Clark wants Caitlin Clark’s basketball to take center stage
Clark called on the WNBA to make clear that it stands behind its players and said the league should move away from what he described as an issue that has distracted from the action.
“The biggest thing to me is the WNBA needs to take a stand and say they stand with the women that are on the court right now playing. That is who they want to protect. And we should stop having conversations about a make-believe issue that the WNBA has not had in 30 years of its existence,” Clark said.
He pointed to Caitlin Clark’s performances, as well as the achievements of other WNBA players, as examples of the basketball stories that deserve greater attention.
“What you should be talking about the fact that Sydney Taylor has gone from undrafted player to clutch bucket maker in the most important moments for her team. That Natasha Cloud, just three games before the incident happened, had 35 points and she was looking for a team this offseason,” Clark added.
“Caitlin Clark on that very night hit eight three-pointers. This is somebody that’s in the MVP conversations, one of the faces of the league.”
The comments come as Caitlin Clark remains at the center of wider debates involving officiating, physical play and political arguments surrounding the WNBA.
Adam Silver defends Caitlin Clark
NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently defended Clark publicly and said the attention surrounding her has been unfair.
“I have come to know Caitlin really well,” Silver said. “She’s an incredible player and also an incredible person. And she wants to focus on being the best player she can. She has become a bit of a political football in this country, and I think it’s incredibly unfair to her.”
Clark argued that the same distractions are also preventing other WNBA players from receiving recognition for their performances.
“And instead of talking about uplifting her and her game, you’re now dealing with nonsense and having to have conversations about that. Angel Reese goes for 31 points two games ago, has 26 rebounds in the next game to break a record. You’ve been fighting all this time for those sorts of people to be recognized.”
His central message was that Caitlin Clark and her fellow WNBA stars should primarily be discussed for what they produce on the basketball court.
