  • Cristiano Ronaldo’s Cryptic Post Following Lionel Messi’s Retirement From Argentina

Cristiano Ronaldo’s Cryptic Post Following Lionel Messi’s Retirement From Argentina

The soccer world experienced a historic moment after Lionel Messi confirmed the end of his era with the Argentina national team. After more than two decades wearing the national jersey, Messi leaves behind a golden period defined by his World Cup triumph and his lasting impact on international soccer.

Tributes quickly spread across digital platforms, with teammates, coaches and athletes from different sports sharing heartfelt messages for the Rosario-born star. Yet much of the media and fan attention centered on one person in particular: Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi’s great generational rival.

Rather than joining the wave of direct messages and emotional statements about Messi’s departure, the Portuguese forward adopted a notably restrained approach focused on his daily work.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s training post sparks debate

According to the specialized outlet Bolavip, Cristiano Ronaldo’s first public statement after the news emerged came through his official channels from Saudi Arabia. The Al-Nassr forward posted a photograph of himself training in the club’s gym alongside the phrase in English: “Keep pushing” (“Sigue empujando”).

The brief post was interpreted by analysts and fans as an indirect message about Ronaldo’s competitive mindset. While Messi is closing the international chapter of his career and entering its final years, the Portuguese star continues to signal his desire to compete at the highest level, without indicating plans to retire from the Portugal national team soon.

International media outlets and platforms such as N+ have also highlighted Ronaldo’s continued global influence. Neither major multimillion-dollar transfers nor the emergence of young prospects in leading leagues has diminished the Portuguese star’s media presence, which remains one of the most powerful forces in modern sport.

    Portugal faces a generational-change dilemma

Ronaldo’s continued involvement with the Portugal national team has revived an ongoing debate within the “Seleção”. Argentina is beginning a planned transition following the departure of its greatest icon, while Portugal must consider whether to continue building around its veteran forward or definitively make room for a new generation of players.

The contrasting paths of Messi and Ronaldo reflect the different ways the two biggest football legends of the 21st century are approaching the final stage of their careers. Messi is stepping aside to prioritize renewal within Argentina’s national team, while Ronaldo remains focused on Portugal’s upcoming international commitments in Europe.

  • Scott McTominay to Undergo Minor Heart Procedure, Scotland and Napoli Midfielder Confirms

Scott McTominay to Undergo Minor Heart Procedure, Scotland and Napoli Midfielder Confirms

Scott McTominay to Undergo Minor Heart Procedure After Arrhythmia Diagnosis

Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay is set to undergo a minor heart procedure after Napoli discovered “a mild benign arrhythmia”.

The 29-year-old was substituted after 56 minutes of Napoli’s 2-1 Serie A defeat by Como on Sunday. The club said he will receive corrective treatment “in the coming days”.

Napoli expect McTominay to return to action after the international break in early October. The midfielder also posted on Instagram: “See you soon Napoli. I won’t take long.”

McTominay likely to miss Scotland matches

The procedure is likely to rule McTominay out of Sebastien Pocognoli’s first four matches as Scotland head coach. Those fixtures are against Slovenia home and away, North Macedonia and Switzerland in the Nations League.

According to the NHS, an arrhythmia occurs when the heart beats too quickly or too slowly, or when the heartbeat is irregular.

Napoli said McTominay will undergo cardiac arrhythmia ablation. The British Heart Foundation explains that the treatment uses heat or cold energy to create tiny scars in the heart, blocking faulty electrical signals and restoring a normal heartbeat.

  • F1 Q&A: Piastri on Norris Deal, Antonelli’s Italian GP Penalty, Ferrari and Zandvoort

F1 Q&A: Piastri on Norris Deal, Antonelli’s Italian GP Penalty, Ferrari and Zandvoort

Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli will look to strengthen his grip on the Formula 1 drivers’ championship at his home race, the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, this weekend.

The 20-year-old faces a growing challenge from resurgent McLaren, particularly Lando Norris, who has won the past two Grands Prix. Monza is also home territory for Ferrari, although the circuit’s long straights may not suit the characteristics of their car.

BBC Sport F1 correspondent Andrew Benson answers the latest questions ahead of round 13 of the 2026 season.

What does Lando Norris’ contract extension mean for Oscar Piastri?

There is clearly some tension behind the scenes, and Piastri’s performance and development have dipped this season.

Oscar Piastri has not started the campaign as strongly as he did last year. In 2025, the Australian appeared on course to challenge for his first world title for much of the season, before his campaign unravelled during the final third.

This year, team-mate Lando Norris has won two races and should have won a third in Miami. Piastri has looked capable of victory only in Japan, where he was leading before being unlucky with the safety car, and Hungary, where Norris took his first win of the year.

Piastri took the lead in Hungary after Norris made an error on the opening lap. However, he was delayed while lapping Carlos Sainz’s Williams, allowing Norris to retake the advantage. Piastri acknowledged that it would have been difficult to keep Norris behind even if he had retained the lead because his pace on the hard tyres was poor. The issue ultimately became irrelevant when he retired with a broken gearbox.

The qualifying head-to-head statistics are uncomfortable for Piastri, with Norris leading 12-4. However, their actual one-lap pace is much closer, with Norris only 0.08 seconds faster on average.

Norris has nevertheless been the more convincing race performer, which explains the 55-point and three-place gap between the McLaren drivers in the championship.

Why has Piastri struggled against Norris?

Several factors may be contributing to the difference between the two drivers.

Piastri has traditionally been strong through high-speed corners. However, fewer of those corners are grip-limited this year because the engines often use them to charge the battery, reducing one potential area of advantage for the Australian. All the drivers have complained about this change.

The cars also have less downforce than last season, and Piastri is less comfortable than Norris in low-grip conditions.

There is also no doubt that Norris consistently raised his performance level during the second half of last season on his way to winning the world title. He has continued to improve this year and is unquestionably one of the drivers of the season so far.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said at the most recent race in the Netherlands: “Last year, we had seen already with Oscar that, from a technical driving point of view, when the car has this low level of grip, like we saw last year for instance in Mexico or in Austin, he needs to adapt the way he drives, the way he thinks, the driving, his expectations.”

“This requires a bit of mental effort, which gets him to lose a couple of tenths of a second because you sort of have to process rather than drive through pure instinct because what happens is what you expect.”

“So it’s one of those cases in which you have to adapt your natural driving style to the demand of the car. So it stays in the space of driving and in the space of the technical side of things. I don’t think it has anything to do with any psychological kind of opportunity. This is purely technical.”

Stella also stressed that the leading three teams are closely matched, meaning, as he put it, “as soon as things are not optimised, then you may have a very significant positional loss – it’s very brutal from this point of view”.

Could McLaren still pursue Max Verstappen?

McLaren and Piastri reject suggestions that there is tension in their relationship. However, McLaren did try to sign Max Verstappen this summer, and it is virtually certain that Piastri would have been replaced if the deal had gone through.

That possibility has receded for now following Verstappen’s new contract with Red Bull. However, the agreement includes performance clauses. If Red Bull continue to struggle next year, McLaren may make another attempt to sign Verstappen.

For now, Piastri is under contract until at least the end of 2027. His focus will be on returning to the level of performance he knows he can deliver.

  • Toto Wolff Says Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 F1 Progress Is One of the Biggest Surprises of His Career

Toto Wolff Says Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 F1 Progress Is One of the Biggest Surprises of His Career

When Toto Wolff met with the Dutch press at Zandvoort a year ago, Kimi Antonelli was enduring the difficult stretch that defined much of his European Formula 1 rookie season. The young Italian had shown flashes of brilliance in Miami and Canada, but those performances were followed by several challenging race weekends.

At the time, Wolff described Antonelli’s first season in straightforward terms:

“Sometimes there are brilliant moments that leave our mouths open, and sometimes we are pulling our hair out. But that is all in line with expectations.”

Many paddock observers expected Antonelli’s 2026 campaign to follow a similar pattern. Instead, the Mercedes driver has combined his natural speed with a major improvement in consistency.

Antonelli has finished on the podium at every grand prix so far except Barcelona and Silverstone. He also leads the Formula 1 championship by 59 points over Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Asked by Motorsport.com whether Antonelli’s progress ranked among the biggest surprises of his long career, Wolff gave a clear answer.

    “Definitely,” he said.

However, Wolff said Hamilton and Max Verstappen had already warned him last year that Antonelli possessed the potential to make such a breakthrough.

“I think the great ones, they know,” Wolff explained. “You say it needs one to know one. And I think that when you listen to Lewis or to Max last year, they already said that he has the potential.
“And that’s what we felt in the team too, looking at his previous records in karting and the junior formulas.
“Nevertheless, to come out after the winter and just nailing it pretty much every single race is one of the big surprises in my professional racing career.”

From ‘parachuted into F1’ to no longer being a ‘deer in the headlights’

Wolff believes Antonelli’s rapid development is the result of more than technical factors. Although the 2026 car may suit his driving style better than the previous ground-effect machinery, Wolff also pointed to the driver’s personal development and ability to process information.

“When I analyse it and ask myself what are the reasons that he had such a good reputation in the junior formulas and karting, I think it’s his processing power.
“I think he just needed the winter to process it. Why was it good? Why was it bad? What do I need to do?”

Wolff also credited the greater stability within Mercedes. Antonelli entered the new season in a familiar environment, with less uncertainty surrounding the travel, accommodation, team procedures and circuits.

“And then to come into an environment that he already knew. He knew that flying to Melbourne would look that way. He knew the hotel. He knew the set-up. He comes to the track, and everything is as last year.
“And that means that it just comes down to driving and preparation, rather than being a deer in front of the headlights, like in 2025, thinking what’s happening? But yeah, it’s still one of the very nice surprises.”

The same factors help explain Antonelli’s inconsistent 2025 rookie season, Wolff said. The combination of established technical regulations, limited experience and intense external pressure created a difficult introduction to Formula 1.

“What happened to Kimi last year is just what we predicted,” Wolff added.
“You’re being parachuted into Formula 1. He was 18 under a set of regulations that was very mature. Most of the drivers were racing those cars for a long time and Kimi didn’t know some of the circuits.
“And then there was this avalanche of media requests and pressure. Suddenly everyone who was part of your journey felt they needed to be with you or close to you. The demands were enormous.”

Kimi Antonelli’s 2025 struggles were “what we predicted”, the Mercedes boss said.

The 54-year-old Austrian said he faced widespread criticism for placing Antonelli in a Mercedes seat so early in his career. Wolff compared the decision with Helmut Marko’s choice to give Max Verstappen an early Formula 1 opportunity at Red Bull, saying both men had seen enough talent to justify taking the risk.

“Everyone and their dog said to me that it was too early, that I shouldn’t have put him into Mercedes and that I should have done a smaller team.
“Spa was probably one of the worst moments, but for me, I stood strong with him because I felt that it was exactly the year we needed,” Wolff said.
“We’re only making the assessment after the second year. And the way he’s come out of the blocks this year is a surprise to everyone, and yes, to me as well.”

Beyond Antonelli’s speed and performance on track, Wolff said the driver’s enthusiasm is now having a positive effect across the Mercedes team.

“He is authentic, very open-minded, not political at all. He completely lacks that negative kind of thing. For him, it’s just all about performance on the track.
“And he’s made all the English mechanics hug each other now, which is also new for us!”

  • Ben Stokes Joins Adelaide Strikers for Big Bash League Season

Ben Stokes Joins Adelaide Strikers for Big Bash League Season

Former England captain Ben Stokes has signed for Adelaide Strikers for the 2026-27 season of the T20 Big Bash League.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket in June during the third and final Test of England’s 2-1 home series defeat by New Zealand.

Stokes played 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals and 43 T20 internationals for England. He scored a superb 84 in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand as England dramatically won the tournament for the first time.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL 16,” said Stokes.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn’t pass up.”

“Adelaide Oval is an incredible place to play cricket, the Big Bash is a fantastic competition and the Strikers have an exciting group, so I’m looking forward to meeting the players, getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.”

“I can’t wait to get started, create some special memories with the group and give Strikers fans plenty to cheer about.”

Adelaide Strikers said Stokes, who had a brief spell with fellow Big Bash League side Melbourne Renegades in 2015, would be available for the entire BBL 16 campaign, which begins in December.

“Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure,” said Adelaide Strikers head coach Tim Paine, whose side start their BBL season against Sydney Thunder on 16 December.

“We’re thrilled to have a player of his ability join our squad and can’t wait to see him put on a show in BBL 16.”

  • McLaren’s Newest Upgrades: What They Reveal Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix

McLaren’s Newest Upgrades: What They Reveal Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix

McLaren’s Zandvoort upgrades helped deliver back-to-back wins

Following its all-new floor, wakeboards and floor slots introduced in Hungary, McLaren brought further performance upgrades to Zandvoort. The latest package included a new rear wing, engine cover updates, diffuser tweaks and revised front wheel rims.

“The items aren’t linked as a package,” explained McLaren’s technical director Neil Houldey of the Zandvoort parts. “They all provide aero performance as individual components and don’t need each other to perform.”

The two consecutive upgrade packages proved highly effective, helping Lando Norris secure back-to-back Grand Prix victories, with both wins coming from pole position.

  • Stephen Curry Puts Warriors Contract Extension on Hold but Sends Clear Message About His Future

Stephen Curry Puts Warriors Contract Extension on Hold but Sends Clear Message About His Future

Stephen Curry has reached a pivotal stage of his NBA career, with every contract decision potentially shaping the final chapter of his time with the Golden State Warriors. Still, his latest comments made clear that a new deal is not his immediate priority.

The 38-year-old became eligible over the weekend for a two-year contract extension worth up to $136.7 million. The agreement could keep Curry under contract with Golden State through the summer of 2029, but he is not rushing to sign.

“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Curry is entering the final season of his current contract and is scheduled to earn $62.6 million in 2026-27. Rather than allowing extension negotiations to dominate the conversation ahead of training camp, however, he wants the Warriors focused on preparing for the season.

“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season,” Curry said.

Warriors face bigger questions than Curry’s contract

Golden State’s most pressing issue is not whether Curry wants to remain with the franchise. The bigger question is whether the Warriors can build another serious playoff team around their longtime star.

Golden State missed the postseason again last year after losing to Phoenix in the play-in tournament. It was the second time in three seasons that the Warriors failed to reach the playoffs.

Curry also appeared in only 41 games during an injury-disrupted campaign. His comments therefore focused as much on returning to the court and competing as they did on his contract.

“Hopefully we’re healthy and we just have a chance to show what we’re capable of, myself included, after missing so many games last year,” Curry said.

The Warriors continue to believe their championship window has not fully closed, and Curry appears to share that outlook.

Stephen Curry focused on Year 18 with Golden State

“The goal stays the same,” Curry said. “Extension stuff, we’ll figure that out at the right time.“

“But I’m ready for Year 18,” Curry added. “It’s kind of crazy that it’s been this long, and I’m still trying to play at a very high level to help us win, and I’ll be able to do my job.”

Curry made the comments during the Workday Charity Classic in Palo Alto, an event benefiting Eat. Learn. Play., the foundation he operates with his wife, Ayesha.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and executive vice president Kirk Lacob were also in attendance, making the setting particularly fitting.

Curry does not sound like a player weighing his options or preparing for a dramatic departure. Instead, he appears willing to let the contract situation resolve itself while he focuses on extending the competitive life of the only NBA team he has ever played for.

  • Pakistan vs England: Shahid Afridi Calls Seven Changes ‘most shocking decision ever’

Pakistan vs England: Shahid Afridi Calls Seven Changes ‘most shocking decision ever’

Pakistan have made seven changes to their squad during the Test series against England, with five players dropped after featuring in the matches so far: Muhammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman and Khurram Shahzad. Aamir Jamal and Muhammad Awais Jafar have been sent home without playing.

The seven call-ups include batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, both of whom have previous Test experience. They join five uncapped players selected for the Pakistan squad.

    Pakistan name seven replacements

Spin-bowling all-rounder Arafat Minhas, left-arm seamer Mohammed Imran Jr, wicketkeeper Said Baig, and all-rounders Mohammad Imran and Razaullah have all received call-ups.

Former Pakistan captain and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja criticised the changes during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m trying to convince myself this is all OK, but it is not.”

It just shows Pakistan cricket has hit a panic button.

Pakistan are scheduled to meet King Charles at Clarence House this week. The engagement was arranged before the series against England began and is expected to go ahead despite the controversy that nearly brought the tour to an early end during the second Test.

At lunch on the first day of that match, the PCB threatened to cancel the remainder of the Test and the tour after Sky broadcast an interview with the sons of Imran Khan.

Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain and prime minister, has been imprisoned for three years on corruption charges, which he denies.

Pakistan ultimately completed the Test. Captain Babar Azam and head coach Sarfaraz both denied having any knowledge of a planned boycott.
