    Which NFL Teams Finished the Preseason Undefeated? Recent History Offers a Warning Ahead of the 2026 Season

    The 2026 NFL season is approaching, and the Los Angeles Rams have emerged as the clear favorite in the NFC. Their status is partly driven by the fact that Super Bowl 61 will be played at SoFi Stadium, their home venue and the site where they won their most recent Lombardi Trophy four seasons ago.

    The Rams also boast an elite offense led by reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams. However, their biggest strength is their defense, which received a major boost through the blockbuster trade for reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett after his record-breaking sack campaign.

    Los Angeles also acquired star cornerback Trent McDuffie and welcomed the stunning return of three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. The 35-year-old came out of retirement on a one-year, $20 million contract, joining Garrett to form what could be one of the most intimidating pass-rushing duos in NFL history.

    Rams, Seahawks Take Different Paths Into the 2026 Season

    On paper, the defending champion Seattle Seahawks are the Rams’ biggest challenger in the NFC. However, the two teams had dramatically different preseasons. Los Angeles swept its three exhibition games against the Chiefs, Saints, and Chargers, while Seattle failed to win a single preseason matchup.

    The Seahawks also experienced more significant roster departures than incoming additions during the offseason, further strengthening the case for the Rams as the NFC’s leading contender.

    Los Angeles finished the preseason undefeated alongside the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals. Although all four teams appear to be strong playoff candidates on paper, recent NFL history offers a warning to every unbeaten preseason team.

    Unbeaten NFL Preseasons Have Delivered Limited Playoff Success

    Since the preseason schedule was reduced from four games to three in 2021, 25 teams have completed the exhibition schedule undefeated. Only 10 of those teams reached the postseason, producing a 40% success rate.

    The trend becomes even more concerning when looking at playoff advancement. Of the 25 teams that went unbeaten during that span, only the Denver Broncos advanced beyond the wild-card round last year.

    For the Rams, Bills, Ravens, and Bengals—all widely projected to contend for a Super Bowl—the historical odds are unexpectedly unfavorable. Based on these trends, at least one of the four teams could miss the postseason entirely.

    Missing January football would be an unmitigated disaster for the Bills and Rams. For the Ravens, failing to reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons has never happened during the Lamar Jackson era. Meanwhile, another postseason absence would give the Bengals four straight years without playoff football and place immense pressure on Joe Burrow and the franchise’s front office.

    Lucca Brughmans Joins Liverpool in Deal Worth Up to £30 Million

    Liverpool have completed the signing of 18-year-old goalkeeper Lucca Brughmans from Belgian club Genk in a deal that could reach £30m, including add-ons.

    Brughmans has signed a six-year contract with Liverpool but will remain at Genk on loan for the 2025-26 season. He is due to move to Anfield ahead of the 2027-28 campaign.

    The 6ft 7in Belgian goalkeeper has started all four of Genk’s matches this season and has represented his country at youth level. BBC Sport understands the agreement includes an initial fee and further payments, with the total value of around £30m representing the maximum amount that could be reached.

    Liverpool currently have Alisson, Giorgi Mamardashvili, Freddie Woodman and Vitezslav Jaros among their goalkeeping options. However, Alisson’s contract expires next summer and Mamardashvili’s long-term future is uncertain, meaning Brughmans could become an option for the club from the summer of 2027.

    Liverpool continue investment in young talent

    The deal for Brughmans followed work by Liverpool’s global talent department, led by Matt Newberry.

    Earlier this year, Liverpool signed Senegalese centre-back Mor Talla N’diaye and Austrian defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe after both impressed at the Under-17 World Cup in Qatar. Goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and midfielder Samuel Martinez have also joined the club within the past 12 months from Hungary and Colombia respectively.

    Pecsi is spending the current season on loan at TSV Hartberg in Germany.

    Nick Woltemade Transfer News: Juventus Sign Newcastle Forward and Spurs Midfielder Sarr on Loan

    Juventus have completed season-long loan deals for Newcastle United forward Nick Woltemade and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr.

    The Serie A club will pay Newcastle £3.5 million to sign Woltemade on loan, but the agreement does not include an option to make the move permanent. Juventus had also held talks with Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee after his proposed transfer to Fiorentina failed to materialise. However, the Italian club considered Woltemade a better fit and a cheaper option, while avoiding the obligation-to-buy clause United wanted for Zirkzee.

    Pape Matar Sarr loan includes purchase obligation

    Woltemade follows Sarr in making a temporary move from the Premier League to Juventus on deadline day, with the Tottenham midfielder joining for £2.1 million.

    Juventus confirmed that Sarr’s loan agreement includes an obligation to buy the Senegal international for £23.6 million if certain conditions are met during the 2026-27 season.

    Sarr joined Tottenham from Metz in 2021 and made more than 100 Premier League appearances for the north London club. He also helped Spurs win the Europa League in 2025.

    The midfielder has won 42 caps for Senegal since making his international debut in 2021 and was part of the team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022.

    Red Bull hires Aston Martin engineer Tom McCullough as head of racing

    Red Bull has confirmed the appointment of long-time Aston Martin engineer Tom McCullough as its new head of racing, replacing McLaren-bound Gianpiero Lambiase.

    Lambiase is due to join McLaren in 2028 as its chief racing officer, reporting to team principal Andrea Stella. He currently combines his role as Max Verstappen’s race engineer with the broader “head of racing” position at Red Bull.

    Verstappen’s former performance engineer, Tom Hart, has already decided against moving to Williams and will instead take over as Verstappen’s race engineer from 2027. Red Bull has now also secured Lambiase’s successor in McCullough, who will join the Milton Keynes team at the beginning of 2027.

    “We’re delighted to welcome Tom to the team at the beginning of 2027 and look forward to the wealth of experience and expertise he will bring to the role,” the team said in a statement.

    Tom McCullough’s Formula 1 career

    McCullough was a long-serving member of Aston Martin through its Force India and Racing Point eras. He spent four seasons as chief race engineer before becoming the team’s performance director, a position he held until the end of the 2024 season.

    Following a restructuring at Aston Martin in early 2025, former team principal Mike Krack assumed McCullough’s responsibilities. McCullough subsequently moved to a senior leadership role working on non-Formula 1 projects at Aston Martin Performance Technologies, a position he is now set to leave.

    The 50-year-old began his career with chassis manufacturer Reynard and later held roles at Sauber and Williams.

    “Love em. Pretty creative. I know I’m in the minority but I like those artful trophies as long as they still resemble trophies in essence. And these do, they look great,” another fan wrote. A third added: “As a designer, I love them! But maybe cause I’m a designer.”

    Others joked that the fragile-looking trophies could be at risk around Lando Norris, recalling the 2023 Hungarian Grand Prix. During the podium celebrations, the McLaren driver accidentally knocked Red Bull driver Max Verstappen’s winner’s trophy over, breaking it.

    “I hope Lando wins, but please keep him away from these lol,” one fan wrote. Another commented: “That’s the most Lando-breakable trophy yet… they better be praying that he doesn’t make the podium.”

    Further reactions included: “Better make spares in case Lando gets on the podium,” and “Lando will break at least one.”

    The Italian Grand Prix will be held at Monza from 4-6 September. Home driver Kimi Antonelli enters the weekend 59 points clear of his Mercedes team-mate George Russell and Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, who are level on points.
