  • Detroit Red Wings Name Shawn Horcoff Interim GM While Search Continues

    The Detroit Red Wings have appointed Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager, effective Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, as the franchise continues its search for a permanent successor to Steve Yzerman. The announcement arrives just two days before the team is scheduled to open training camp at Little Caesars Arena.

    Horcoff Steps Into Leadership Role

    Horcoff, 47, brings deep institutional knowledge to the position.     Horcoff’s most pressing task is finalizing a new contract for restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson. A deal completed by end of day on Sept. 15 could still be structured for eight years; after that date, NHL rules limit teams to a maximum of seven years when re-signing their own players.

    Yzerman Transitions to Advisory Role

    The team also confirmed that Yzerman will officially move into a senior advisor position reporting to Ilitch. This transition comes as Detroit aims to end a playoff drought that reached an active NHL-record 10 consecutive seasons last spring.

    Search for Permanent GM Remains Active

    Ilitch indicated the search for a permanent head of hockey operations has drawn substantial interest from around the league.

    Heidi Klum will return to America’s Got Talent as a guest judge on Sept. 8, temporarily filling Simon Cowell’s seat while he recovers from back surgery, USA TODAY exclusively reports.

    Klum, 53, has extensive history with the NBC talent competition. She first joined the judging panel in 2013 for Season 8 and remained through Season 13 in 2018. After sitting out Season 14, she returned for Season 15 in 2020 and continued as a judge through Season 19 in 2024.

    Klum’s final season ended on a high note when her Golden Buzzer act, singing janitor Richard Goodall, won the competition. She left the show after that season, and Mel B took her place on the judging panel.

    America’s Got Talent announces special three-hour live episode

    Klum’s return is not the only major change coming to AGT next week. Rather than airing episodes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the show will broadcast a special three-hour live episode on Tuesday, Sept. 8, because the NFL season opener is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 9.

    The Sept. 8 broadcast will include two hours of performances followed by an one-hour results show. Voting will remain open throughout the performance portion and close at 10:05 p.m. ET/7:05pm PT. The results will then be revealed during the third hour.

    Simon Cowell’s recovery from back surgery

    Klum is the second guest judge to replace Cowell after the show confirmed that he would miss several weeks of the America’s Got Talent live shows for routine back surgery.

    “He’s having an operation that cannot be postponed,” host Terry Crews explained during the Aug. 25 episode after pointing out that Cowell’s seat at the judge’s table was empty. “It’s not an emergency, but it can’t be put off. Simon, we are sending you our very best wishes for a speedy recovery, and we’re looking forward to seeing you back at the judges desk very soon.”

    Saturday Night Live star Kenan Thompson was the first guest judge to take Cowell’s place, appearing on the Sept. 1 episode. USA TODAY reports that AGT is booking additional guest judges one week at a time.

    America’s Got Talent premiered its 21st season on June 2, with the finale scheduled to air on NBC on Sept. 23. Howie Mandel, Sofía Vergara and Mel B also serve as judges, while Crews hosts the series.

    “Kristen Welker, the Unpopular ‘Hostess’ of the once great Meet the Press, now considered Meet the Fake Press, just stated that Donald Trump has ‘mixed results’ on his Endorsements of Candidates, when the recent WINS of Darline Graham and Mike Mazzei, stand at 100% for the U.S. Senate, and 98% for the U.S. House,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Aug. 30.

    USA TODAY has reached out to NBC for comment.

    Trump added, “Because of this purposeful inaccuracy, she will be reported to the FCC for rebuke or punishment. Unfortunately, she is not the only one.”

    Despite Trump’s post, the FCC has limited legal authority to take action against Welker as an individual. His comments nevertheless intensify a growing rift between the president and the journalist.

    Trump and Welker have clashed before

    In early June, Trump made headlines after abruptly exiting an “MTP” interview with Welker following a tense exchange. The NBC anchor had challenged the president’s comments about election security in California.

    The FCC is an independent agency that oversees broadcast, radio and other networks. Disney and ABC sued the agency in an Aug. 18 lawsuit, alleging an unconstitutional “retaliatory campaign” against the network.

    Critics say the FCC has become increasingly political during Trump’s second term under the leadership of Brendan Carr. Trump referenced Carr in the Truth Social post, writing that “The Press is a Disgrace to our Nation.”

    Trump’s 2026 endorsement record

    Trump has a strong endorsement record in 2026, but some candidates he supported have lost recent Republican primaries.

    In Wyoming, Megan Degenfelder, who leads the state’s department of public instruction, lost the Republican primary for governor. Rep. Cory Mills lost his reelection bid in Florida, as did Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles, a controversial House member.

    In Minnesota, longtime Trump ally and MyPillow founder Mike Lindell also lost a Republican primary for governor.
