    House Panel Votes to Hold Epstein Associate Leon Black in Contempt

    The House Oversight Committee voted unanimously on Tuesday to recommend that the full House hold billionaire Leon Black in contempt of Congress. The 41-0 bipartisan vote stems from Black’s refusal to comply with subpoenas issued as part of the committee’s investigation into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

    Background on the Investigation

    Black, a private equity investor and co-founder of Apollo Global Management, had a business relationship with Epstein. He voluntarily appeared for a closed-door transcribed interview with the Republican-led committee in late June but departed before the session concluded. Lawmakers alleged he was not answering their questions, prompting the committee to issue subpoenas demanding additional information.

    Black subsequently failed to appear for a scheduled deposition and filed a lawsuit seeking to block the subpoenas for his testimony and for nondisclosure agreements tied to Epstein.

    Attorneys Call Contempt Vote “Complete Abomination”

    Ahead of the vote, which was called by Committee Chair Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., attorneys for Black issued a scathing statement.

    “This is retaliation — plain and simple,” the attorneys, Susan Estrich and Aaron Cutler, wrote. “We have the constitutional right to sue Chairman Comer and the Committee because the subpoenas issued were illegitimate, illegal and a textbook abuse of power designed to bully and destroy legal protections of private citizens.”

    The statement characterized the committee’s action as a complete abomination.

    Black’s Ties to Epstein and Previous Review

    Black announced he was stepping down as CEO of Apollo Global Management in January 2021. This followed an internal review that found he had paid Epstein $158 million for advice on tax and estate planning and related services between 2012 and 2017. The same review concluded that Black was not involved in Epstein’s criminal activities.

    Black has consistently stated he did not engage in any wrongdoing and deeply regrets his involvement with Epstein. Epstein died in jail in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Black has not been accused of wrongdoing by law enforcement and has denied any involvement in or awareness of Epstein’s illegal activity.

    Next Steps: Full House Vote

    Following the committee’s contempt recommendation, the resolution moves to the full House for a vote, though passage is not guaranteed. Rep. Comer told NBC News after Tuesday’s vote that he expects the House to take up the resolution on Thursday.

    Rep. Robert Garcia of California, the top Democrat on the committee, signaled strong bipartisan support for the measure.

    “today’s a really important day for justice.” He add that the committee will “work towards a strong vote of the House in a bipartisan way to get and ensure that we get our testimony and that Leon Black faces justice for these two subpoenas.”

    From Set Visitors to On-Screen Presence

    Bullock described her children’s evolving curiosity about her work, progressing from “Where are you going?” to “Can we watch?” and finally, “Can we be in it?” However, previous attempts to include them had ended on the cutting room floor.

    “every time I put them in the background before, it’s gotten cut,” Bullock said. “Sorry. Show business.”

    Things changed with “Practical Magic 2.” Bullock incorporated “their essences,” using “little recordings from when they were babies and then all the way up” to weave their voices into the film. The teenagers remained unaware until the premiere.

    “Last night when it came up, they’re all like, ‘That’s me?’ And they got to see themselves as babies and little toddlers. And yeah, it was very sweet,” she said. “So they didn’t get cut out,” Bullock added with a laugh. “They’re kinda in it.”

    Kidman’s Family Experience on Set

    Nicole Kidman, 59, also brought her family to the London set. She shares daughters Sunday Rose, 18, and Faith Margaret, 15, with husband Keith Urban, and has two adult children with ex-husband Tom Cruise.

    “They’ve been on sets pretty much their whole lives,” Kidman told Hoda. “So it was more like they were in London in the summer, and it was just beautiful for them. And my niece was there, and so for us it was just a family kind of affair. And they would come and go and watch things, and both of them have seen this movie now. They hadn’t seen the original.”

    Kidman noted her teens have since watched the 1998 cult classic in which she and Bullock play the Owens sisters, witch descendants navigating practical magic.

    Parenting Teenagers: Perspectives from Two Oscar Winners

    The conversation turned to raising teenagers, with both actors offering insights for Kotb, whose daughters are 9 and 7.

    “I think it’s a joy,” Kidman said. “I mean, is it hard? Aspects of it can be challenging. But at the same time, is it extraordinary to accompany these people on their journey, on the beginning of their journey, and just say, ‘I’m here. I’m your guide. I’m hopefully your home, your safe place, and the world is your oyster?’”

    Bullock described a different parenting reality shaped by race. While she is white, both her children are Black.

    “I mean, we’re different this, you know?” she said while gesturing to her skin. “I’m uber paranoid, and they will tell you. They’re like, ‘Mom, it’s going to be fine.’ I’m like, ‘It’s not fine. It’s not fine outside.’ The energy that is floating around our country and our world.”

    “Again, the color of their skin. They’re my babies, they’re my life, but no one knows that when they leave my house,” she continued. “So that is always in the forefront of my mind. But I’m now learning to trust them. Where they are now is extraordinary.”

    “Practical Magic 2” hits theaters Sept. 10.

    Ciara Miller Reveals Her ‘Dancing With the Stars’ Must-Haves

    Summer House Star Ciara Miller Shares Her Dancing with the Stars Rehearsal Essentials

    Talking Shop is our series where we talk to interesting people about their most interesting buys. Ciara Miller took the Hamptons by storm from the moment she joined the cast of Bravo’s Summer House. She held down the fort in Fiji while hosting Love Island: Aftersun and modeled in campaigns for some of the biggest brands in the world. Now, Miller is tackling a new challenge: competing for the Mirrorball Trophy on season 35 of Dancing with the Stars, which premiered at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+.

    Adjusting to Ballroom Dance

    “I’m definitely getting a run for my money,” says Miller, who told me that she’s wanted to do the show for years. “It’s such an experience for growth. I danced growing up, but I did ballet and hip hop and jazz and stuff. This is such a different sector of dance that I wanted to experience.”

    Miller’s partner this season is Brandon Armstrong, a multi-season DWTS pro. She says he’s been a great teacher and choreographer, but she’s putting her mark on performances, too. “Brandon is in charge of one thing: the dancing,” says Miller. “I’m in charge of everything else. We have creative calls where we can be as involved or not involved as we want, and I’m involved, even down to his outfits.”

    Before Miller’s first live performance, I talked to her about what she’s using to recover after hours-long rehearsals and products she swears by on the dance floor. And, of course, because she’s the first Summer House cast member to be in the ballroom, I had to ask: If she could cast any of her other housemates on Dancing with the Stars, who would it be?

    “Kyle [Cooke] would be number one on my Mount Rushmore,” says Miller. “I tried to teach him a pose, and I would really enjoy seeing Kyle attempting to learn any type of dance at all.”

    Arm Training with Bala Bangles

    One of the most useful purchases Miller has made during Dancing with the Stars rehearsals so far is Bala Bangles. “I just got these arm weights because a lot of my moves this first week are in frame, and my arms look like chicken wings instead of an elegant bird,” she says. “So I was like, okay, what can keep me mindful of keeping my arms up? These weights are how I’ve been training my arms.” She got a pink pair and tries to keep them on for the entirety of each practice session.

    Recovery Routine: Baths, Red Light Therapy, and Massages

    Miller isn’t shy about sharing what the hardest part about being on Dancing with the Stars is: “I am not flexible anymore, so I really have to stretch,” she says. “My back, my neck… I’m so sore everywhere.” She’s taking recovery very seriously, starting with hot baths. “I’m soaking in a bathtub almost every day for at least 20 minutes. It’s essential,” says Miller. “I’m living for Dr. Teal’s epsom salt. I’ve got the sleepytime one, I’ve got the one for muscle recovery; I’ve got all the things.”

    To continue winding down after her bath, Miller puts on her favorite red light therapy mask from CurrentBody. “It’s flexible, so it can fit into small spaces, and I didn’t have to worry about crushing it when I was traveling, which was nice,” she says, referring to her recent move from New York City to Los Angeles. “I use it to relax and treat my skin, and I’m incorporating getting massages, too, because I need to get better about recouping. But at home, it’s the simple things. I obviously love my bed, and I love a Salt & Stone candle — it’s one of my favorite things to have in my room.”

    Breaking in Dance Heels

    Miller isn’t just dancing for hours a day — she’s doing so while wearing heels. “You’ve got to break your shoes in and get used to them,” she says. “I’ve honestly been doing good so far and wearing socks with them. I’m the type of person where wearing a new shoe sometimes almost stresses me out, unless it’s for the look. But in this case, I knew I had to get acquainted with them early.”

    One of her go-to ways to care for achy feet is by using a foot spa. “I’m bringing back the pedicure bath things that I was like, I haven’t seen this thing in 20 years,” she says. “But I got one on Amazon, and I would say it’s one of my best purchases of 2026.”

    Fueling Rehearsals: Fruit Jerky and Celsius

    As for Miller’s favorite thing to nosh on pre-, post- and during rehearsal? “Fruit — I don’t like eating a heavy meal beforehand,” she says. “I love Solely fruit jerky. I swear by it and it helps spike my blood sugar if I’m feeling a little bit eh. It’s healthy and really great on the go.” There’s always Celsius in her refrigerator too, a brand she recently worked with to launch its Spritz Vibe beverage.

    Hair Care That Withstands Live TV

    Miller immediately stocked her DWTS trailer with Nexxus hair care when she got access to it. She’s been working with the brand throughout the year, and says its products continuously fit into different aspects of her life. “With Dancing with the Stars, we’re going to be in several different types of hairstyles, so you really need something that’s going to withstand the test of time from the wee hours of the morning to at night when we’re live on TV,” says Miller. “We all know I’m a glam girl — I love my glam, and obviously I’m going to be focused on it. But when it comes down to it, I need reliable products that I know are going to hold me through so my attention is on my dancing entirely.”

    Her favorite Nexxus product is the Air Shape Workable Hold Texture Spray. “I like volume. I like big hair. I want to pull it out and make it even bigger,” says Miller. “I’m a texture girl. And obviously I need a firm hairspray to hold it all in place, too.”

    “From what I had seen, I genuinely believed the driver might not be able to get out by himself. I stopped, got out and went towards the car. There was never a moment of doubt. It was scary.”

    Federal Judge Blocks Trump’s Latest Order Limiting Birthright Citizenship

    A federal judge has blocked President Donald Trump’s latest executive order seeking to restrict birthright citizenship, reinforcing the constitutional right of people born in the United States to become American citizens.

    U.S. District Judge Deborah Boardman ruled Wednesday that Trump’s August order “is almost certainly unconstitutional.” In a 35-page decision, Boardman cited the U.S. Supreme Court’s June ruling that prevented Trump from enforcing a separate 2025 executive order aimed at limiting citizenship at birth.

    “This Court must, once again, preliminarily enjoin enforcement of the President’s most recent attempt to strip the right to citizenship from them,”

    Boardman issued the ruling in a case brought by CASA Inc., a Maryland nonprofit organization. Last week, she denied CASA’s request to block the executive order, but said the decision was based only on a technicality: The organization’s original complaint referred to Trump’s 2025 order instead of the newer order signed in August.

    “This is different,”

    Boardman said Friday while comparing the August order with Trump’s first order.

    “This is unprecedented.”

    She also indicated that she would rule in CASA’s favor after the complaint was amended, saying Trump was

    “trying to rewrite the carve-outs to birthright citizenship with the stroke of a pen.”

    Judge cites Fourteenth Amendment citizenship protections

    In Wednesday’s ruling, Boardman reiterated her concerns about the administration’s effort to limit birthright citizenship.

    “Since his second term in office began on January 20, 2025, the President has tried, through Executive Order, to upend our country’s longstanding tradition of birthright citizenship and eliminate, for large swaths of Americans, the right to citizenship by birth, a right enshrined in the Citizenship Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.”

    The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the decision.

    Attorney General Todd Blanche said in an interview on Fox News on Wednesday evening that the ruling

    “is not something that is a surprise to us.”

    Blanche said the administration had designed the order with the Supreme Court’s earlier decision in mind.

    “We crafted the EO around, and in concurrence, and understanding what the Supreme Court said in their decision. And so we expected— we didn’t expect this judge to say we were right,”

    he said.

    The attorney general added that the administration will

    “continue to fight as President Trump has talked about for many years”

    and

    “if we have to go back to the Supreme Court, we will.”

    Trump’s August order narrowed earlier birthright citizenship effort

    Trump signed the latest executive order on Aug. 6. It seeks to limit who can become a U.S. citizen after being born in the country, but is narrower than the order he signed on the first day of his second term, which sought to broadly end birthright citizenship.

    Opponents immediately challenged the 2025 order, arguing that it violated the Fourteenth Amendment, which states:

    “All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States.”

    After the Supreme Court blocked that order, Trump signed the August measure targeting birthright citizenship for certain groups, including children born to parents considered an

    “alien enemy”

    of the United States or to parents who work for foreign embassies.

    The State Department has also proposed requiring parents to provide proof of their own citizenship or immigration status when applying for passports for their children.

    Patrick and Justin Herbert are now part of the same NFL organization, a rare opportunity for brothers in professional football. Although they will have different roles with the Chargers, the move allows them to work in the same building and spend time together throughout the season.

    Patrick Herbert has been working to establish his own NFL career since entering the league. Joining the Chargers practice squad gives him the chance to continue developing, learn the team’s system and compete for a future opportunity in Los Angeles.

    His arrival also adds another chapter to the Herbert brothers’ football story. Patrick can benefit from working alongside the Chargers’ tight ends while continuing to improve his game and learn from the organization’s experienced players.

    What Patrick Herbert brings to the Chargers

    Herbert could become a useful addition to the Chargers’ tight end group by giving the team another player to develop and keep ready. While he is starting on the practice squad, he can continue learning the system and preparing alongside the rest of the position group.

    Herbert had a solid career with the Oregon Ducks and previously served as a depth option for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He could provide Los Angeles with additional security at tight end as the season progresses.

    An NFL season can change quickly, and having a tight end already practicing within the organization could be valuable if the Chargers need another option. Herbert now has an opportunity to keep growing as a player while giving Los Angeles another tight end to turn to during the season.

    Damm does not have an extensive U.S. Open history, but he reached the second round in his tournament debut in 2025. The 22-year-old recently advanced to the Round of 16 at the Winston-Salem Open, although he was eliminated in qualifying at the Cincinnati Masters.

    The 28-year-old reached at least the quarterfinals in three consecutive years and is coming off a strong performance at the Cincinnati Masters. He appears slightly undervalued against Damm, who has limited Grand Slam experience and is 9-12 across 21 matches in 2026.

    Tiafoe has not reached a Grand Slam quarterfinal in 2026, but he has advanced to at least the third round in all three major tournaments played so far this year. He should advance against Damm, although the moneyline does not offer much value.

    The set spread provides a better option, with Tiafoe priced at -175 to win 3-0 or 3-1.
