  • Adults Season 2’s Most Foul-Mouthed Scene Is Also Its Biggest Romantic Gesture

Adults Season 2’s Most Foul-Mouthed Scene Is Also Its Biggest Romantic Gesture

In most romantic comedies, a grand romantic gesture involves running through an airport to make one last declaration of love or writing a yearning letter every day for a year. In Adults, it means saying “cunt” on every man-on-the-street interview show you can find.

Related: Adults assembles the Avengers of man-on-the-street creators

The gesture unfolds in Season 2, episode 7, titled “C Alert.” Anton (Owen Thiele) accidentally speaks to his co-workers the way he speaks to his friends, saying “cunt alert!” during a company meeting. He does not intend it as an insult, instead drawing on the word’s positive meaning in the queer ballroom scene.

That meaning has helped fuel a broader resurgence of the term, including in online spaces. However, it remains unforgivably rude in some settings, including Anton’s workplace, where employees skew older and are likely less familiar with queer culture.

To help save Anton’s job, his housemate and yearning love interest Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) decides to normalize saying “cunt” in the workplace by using it on as many viral interview shows as possible. Adults co-creator Ben Kronengold describes the scheme as an “ugly sweet” step in Anton and Paul Baker’s romance.

The pair clearly care about each other, but their attempts to become a couple have stalled because of a house-wide rule forbidding dating within the friend group. “What we tasked ourselves with in the writers’ room was how could they show that care for each other in ways that feel really true to them and specific and platonic?” Kronengold told Mashable.

“It would be easy to have Paul Baker show up in the rain with a bouquet of flowers,” added Adults co-creator Rebecca Shaw. “But it feels much more true to our ridiculous housemates that he would instead say the c-word — a word he hates more than anything in the world — on a series of talk shows for the whole world to see because he thinks there’s a chance that it could make Anton’s life a little easier.”

Paul Baker’s plan is a clear escalation from the pair’s earlier romantic gestures, such as Anton bringing glow sticks to Paul Baker’s green card wedding and Paul Baker waiting on a fancy meal for Anton and his sister Talia (Raven-Symoné). It is also their riskiest gesture in terms of social taboo, even though it comes from sweeter intentions.

“Something that our executive producer Nick Kroll is so masterful at is making edgy, raunchy moments incredibly meaningful and sweet, and on the flip side, making sweet, emotional moments heightened and comedic,” Shaw said. “We always try to follow in his footsteps. Never give a pure romantic moment, never give a pure comedic moment.”

Paul Baker’s revelation about his swear-filled side quest leads to one of the season’s most adorable moments between him and Anton: Anton offers a heartfelt “Paul Baker, thank you,” accompanied by intense yearning eye contact that makes it obvious to everyone else in the scene how much the two care about each other.

Of course, the gesture comes with one final twist.

“We were really tickled by the idea that Paul Baker did this whole big gesture when, in fact, Anton’s job was already saved,” said Kronengold.

“Nobody had the heart to tell him,” added Shaw.

But hey, it’s the thought that counts, right?

Adults Season 2 is now streaming on Hulu.

  • Adults Assembles an Avengers-Style Team of Man-on-the-Street Creators

Adults Assembles an Avengers-Style Team of Man-on-the-Street Creators

Man-on-the-street interviews have become a defining part of online culture, with short-form series such as Track Star, Gaydar, Are You Okay? and Subway Takes turning quick encounters with strangers into viral entertainment. In Adults Season 2, these popular shows take over the FX sitcom for one of its funniest episodes yet.

Paul Baker embraces his “man-on-the-street face”

In Season 2, Episode 7, “C Alert,” Paul Baker (Jack Innanen) complains that he has what he and his friends call “man-on-the-street face” — an expression that makes him an easy target for New York City’s street-interview creators. Thanks to his Canadian politeness, Paul can never bring himself to turn them down.

By the end of the episode, however, Paul embraces his interview-friendly face to help his housemate and will-they-won’t-they love interest, Anton (Owen Thiele). Anton has gotten into trouble at work for saying “cunt,” a word whose positive associations in queer ballroom culture have fueled its broader reclamation, particularly online. Despite that resurgence, the word still carries significant baggage in the United States, prompting Paul’s campaign to normalize it through street interviews.

Adults then launches into a cameo-filled montage of Paul stumbling through appearances on real-life man-on-the-street programs, including Gaydar, hosted by Anania; Are You Okay?, then hosted by Brianna “Bri” Morales; Recess Therapy, hosted by Julian Shapiro-Barnum; Street Hearts, hosted by Tiffany “Tiff” Baira; and Track Star, hosted by Jack Coyne.

The sequence provides a hilarious conclusion to the episode while also highlighting the reach and influence of the creators behind the genre.

How the “C Alert” street interviews came together

Adults creators Ben Kronengold and Rebecca Shaw said the idea of featuring street-interview hosts in Season 2 began when the show’s writers took walks around New York City in search of inspiration. During one visit to Washington Square Park, they saw several interviewers pulling people aside to film their segments.

“One of the writers was like, ‘isn’t it funny that we haven’t seen that on TV yet?’” Shaw recalled in a video interview with Mashable. “It feels like such a present part of New York culture right now.”

To capture that part of New York culture — and the digital culture it becomes once posted online — Adults contacted several New York-based street-interview creators about appearing as themselves.

“To be honest, I was skeptical at first,” Track Star host Jack Coyne told Mashable over the phone. “I thought Track Star sounded like it could be the butt of the joke.”

Coyne created Track Star as a “reaction” to the more aggressive and inappropriate man-on-the-street interviews that have become notorious online. Adults pokes fun at that confrontational style through fictional programs such as Milk or Dare and Gay Granny’s Trivia Crashout. Executive producer Nick Kroll also makes a voiceover cameo as a sleazy host who asks Paul to rank the women in his family by attractiveness.

But the final montage turns the joke back on Paul and becomes an affectionate showcase for the real creators appearing in the episode.

“We’re such fans of this genre, and we think it’s so cool the way these younger creators have managed to really carve out these very funny, specific, voice-y names for themselves in this space,” Shaw said.

Adults typically films in Toronto, but the production sent a small crew to New York City to film Innanen’s segments in the creators’ own environments.

“We wanted to do it on their terms and on their territory, and we really let the hosts lead with their voice, their improv, their writing,” Kronengold said.

Real creators bring their own formats to Adults

The hosts received an outline but could improvise and approach the fictional segments as they would any regular shoot. For Bri Morales, the internet personality and former host of Are You Okay?, that meant deciding whether Paul was actually okay. He was not.

For Anania, the host of Gaydar, the question was whether Paul was gay, straight or a homophobe. In keeping with the show’s established lore, Paul is fluid. On Street Hearts, Tiff Baira sat with Paul at the program’s recognizable matchmaking table to investigate why he was single.

“Paul Baker was just a real person in that moment,” Baira told Mashable over the phone.

Over a single day, the Adults crew traveled across New York, filming Gaydar near a Midtown Container Store and Recess Therapy in Prospect Park. Each segment followed the style of its respective show, including its cameras, lighting, framing and microphone setup. The post-production team also recreated the programs’ graphics and rapid editing styles.

“Being so onboard with having our format inside of the episode makes it a very valiant effort on the showrunners’ part,” Anania told Mashable in a phone interview.

“You don’t often see that from brands,” added Amelia Montooth, creator of Gaydar and CEO of Mutuals Media. “Usually, you’re battling with them to try to keep your authenticity.”

That authenticity also meant treating online creators as stars in their own right. Caleb Simpson, known for his house-tour videos, originally auditioned to play one of Paul’s bro-y friends in the Season 2 premiere. He later returned as himself in “C Alert,” filming a video about Samir’s (Malik Elassal) home.

For Simpson, the appearance reflects Hollywood’s changing view of internet creators.

“I started making content on the internet 11 years ago, and the industry didn’t take it seriously,” Simpson told Mashable over Zoom. “About three or four years ago, I started taking acting and stand up and improv seriously, and then you get cast to play yourself in a show, and you do exactly what you would do when you film your content.”

Why man-on-the-street shows fit the Adults audience

Adults’s embrace of online creators reflects their growing presence in Hollywood. Alongside the street-interview hosts, Season 2 features internet personalities such as Jake Shane, while Innanen also began his career as a content creator.

The approach also gives the show’s Gen Z audience a sense of recognition by meeting viewers in the online spaces where they already spend time. Shaw described the programs as “generational access points.”

“What is the Maddy quote from Euphoria, where she’s like, ‘is this fucking play about us’? That is the goal for these young adult shows to really ring true to their target audience,” Morales told Mashable over the phone. “It would maybe be funny if [Paul Baker] went on The Today Show, but it’s so native to the demographic that of course he’s going to do Are You Okay?, or course he’s going to do man-on-the-street shows, because that’s where everything is right now.”

That “everything” extends to the Adults press tour. During Season 1, Innanen appeared on Are You Okay?, while Amita Rao and Owen Thiele appeared on Gaydar. In Season 2, Paul’s many street-interview appearances also gave Innanen opportunities to appear on those programs as himself.

In a short montage, the show’s fictional world mirrors its marketing campaign, bringing its relationship with online culture full circle.

“The fact that Adults is putting a show like [Track Star] in their script and on TV and understanding it’s a big part of the cultural conversation is just the beginning, honestly,” Coyne said. “I think you’re going to start to see a lot more of this stuff in culture broadly, because people are spending as much time watching content on the internet and on their phones as they are watching Netflix and Amazon and Hulu and FX.”

“It is the future,” said Baira. “Short form and traditional, the future is going to be blending the two.”

Adults Season 2 is now streaming on Hulu.

  • “Paranormal Activity” Is a Bad Omen for Broadway

“Paranormal Activity” Is a Bad Omen for Broadway

Broadway’s latest horror offering, Paranormal Activity, arrives with a familiar promise: turn a recognizable piece of intellectual property into a theatrical event. But unlike productions such as Cats: The Jellicle Ball, which transformed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical into an immersive ballroom experience, this adaptation relies primarily on jump scares—and struggles to deliver the spectacle Broadway demands.

Cats: The Jellicle Ball earned critical praise, enthusiastic audience reactions and three Tony Awards, including Best Direction of a Musical, yet closed only weeks after receiving those honors. Its fate reflects Broadway’s current dependence on adaptations of movies, television shows and other popular properties. This year’s crowded field has included The Lost Boys: A New Musical, Titanique, Schmigadoon and Dog Day Afternoon, while Heated Rivalry received an unofficial off-Broadway parody before its vinyl soundtrack release. Some adaptations have been excellent or intriguing. Beaches was not.

Paranormal Activity brings a thin new story to Broadway

Now Paranormal Activity has joined the lineup. The production premiered in Leeds before its 2025 West End debut and earned praise on its journey to Broadway, including during a sold-out Los Angeles run. That momentum created considerable anticipation for its arrival at the August Wilson Theatre.

Unfortunately, the Broadway production is not a particularly satisfying night at the theater. It offers a string of jump scares without the atmosphere, invention or visual scale expected from a major Broadway production. Fans of the film franchise may be especially disappointed.

Cher Alvarez and Travis A. Knight star in Paranormal Activity on Broadway. Credit: Matthew Murphy

Although the Playbill identifies Oren Peli’s 2007 film of the same name as an inspiration, the connection between the stage production and its source material is extremely slight. Written by Levi Holloway, the play follows an American married couple who move from Chicago to London for a fresh start. The choice of London is never explained, and because the action takes place almost entirely inside a small house, the story could have been set almost anywhere.

The location does give James (Travis A. Knight) and Lou (Cher Álvarez) a sense of isolation. New to the city and without a local support network, the ruthlessly rational James and his increasingly distressed wife confront a series of paranormal disturbances.

Like Katie in the first Paranormal Activity film, Lou is troubled by a dark event in her past and fears an entity stalking her. James occupies the role of the skeptical partner, similar to Micah: he claims to want to help while dismissing the supernatural and provoking the possible creature. At one point, he declares, “Fuck the bogeyman.” A jump scare follows almost immediately.

Holloway’s play abandons the franchise’s established mythology, including the found-footage format, and changes the nature of the entity at its center. None of those choices is inherently flawed. Together, however, they raise an obvious question: why is this production called Paranormal Activity when it has so little connection to the existing intellectual property?

A Broadway horror show without enough atmosphere

Paranormal Activity compares poorly with Broadway’s other recent horror productions. The Lost Boys carefully selected the campiest elements of Joel Schumacher’s vampire cult classic, then built a stronger emotional story around them, embraced the film’s queer subtext and recreated cinematic moments through thrilling stage stunts.

It also lacks the comic energy of the recently closed Death Becomes Her, which transformed murderous mayhem into memorable stage gags that sent audiences laughing down the metaphorical staircase alongside Madeline Ashton.

A more direct comparison is Grey House, also written by Holloway. That 2023 Broadway play was another horror story set in a modest home, where an unsuspecting married couple encountered strange children and an unsettling older woman. Grey House built dread through cryptic conversations and a mounting sense that the visitors had made a terrible mistake. Even years later, the precise scares may be difficult to recall, but the experience of screaming remained unforgettable.

Paranormal Activity produced some screams, but not many. For every jump scare that succeeded, several others failed to provoke even a flinch. Audience laughter filled the theater, perhaps as a nervous response or because of the couple’s caustic exchanges. The overall effect felt less like a shared surrender to a horror story than a theme-park attraction designed to provide occasional shocks.

Director Felix Barrett employs familiar haunted-house devices: flickering lights, a shadowy figure crossing the stage, a possible nursery door slamming shut and repeated bursts of deafening sound. After the first few scares, though, the pattern becomes predictable.

Between the grim jokes, the play presents a toxic relationship that is more relentlessly one-note than compelling. Knight and Álvarez bring intensity to their arguments over advice from a ghost-hunting podcaster, played by Eva Kaminsky, and to their attempts to conceal the haunting from James’s inquisitive mother, played by Shannon Cochran, who remains only a video call away.

The drama becomes even less effective when the entity is revealed to be capable of mimicking other people. Vulnerable conversations are consequently undermined by the possibility that they are merely a cruel trick rather than genuine breakthroughs between two people unable to speak honestly. A similar exploration of doubles and fear of intimacy appeared in Leviticus earlier this year—a production that is both frightening and thematically substantial.

Paranormal Activity offers little comparable depth. Its supernatural device makes the already thinly drawn characters feel even less developed, leaving the Broadway production dependent on its central gimmick.

Immersive staging that never becomes immersive

The new story does not require audiences to remember Katie, Micah or their demon Tobi. That could have allowed Holloway and Barrett to create fresh possibilities for horror theater. Instead, the play feels like a murky echo of Grey House: a similar house, a similar setup and considerably less effective scares.

Barrett, a founder of the immersive British theater company Punchdrunk, known for Sleep No More, never fully makes the audience feel trapped inside the haunted home. Unlike Titanique, which expands its stage into the auditorium, or The Jellicle Ball, which sends performers into the aisles and mezzanine, Paranormal Activity maintains a firm separation between the stage and the audience.

The house is designed like a dollhouse, with one wall removed to expose the interior. That configuration can obstruct views for audience members near the front or at the sides, where solid interior walls block parts of the action. More frustratingly, the production does not use the space with enough precision.

In The Lost Boys, director and co-lighting designer Michael Arden used spotlights and other lighting effects to direct the audience’s attention toward one frightening image while preparing another in the shadows. The technique resembled a video game, giving viewers a clear visual cue about where to look.

Paranormal Activity offers no such guidance. For long stretches, the audience must scan the dimly lit house, searching for something frightening without knowing which detail matters. Should viewers follow James upstairs as he uses the bathroom, watch a flickering light or track Lou as she approaches the back door?

In horror, a wide shot can be terrifying because it invites the audience to study apparent stillness and darkness for a threat that the character has not noticed. Here, that searching too often leads nowhere. At times, viewers may even be watching the wrong area, left confused when someone across the theater reacts to a scare they missed.

Paranormal Activity is less frightening than a great horror film and less impressive than a great Broadway production. It appears designed for audiences seeking a relatively upscale alternative to a haunted hayride during the Halloween season, or a spooky children’s option alongside Radio City’s Christmas show.

But with its thin story and underwhelming stage spectacle, the production represents a troubling direction for Broadway: shallowly adapted intellectual property occupying space that could instead support something more daring and genuinely chilling.

Paranormal Activity is playing at New York City’s August Wilson Theatre through Jan. 3.
