Disney and Lucasfilm are preparing a massive theatrical celebration for the 50th anniversary of Star Wars in 2027, headlined by the first-ever IMAX release of the 1977 original film alongside the franchise’s next major feature, Star Wars: Starfighter.
Original Star Wars Returns to Theaters in IMAX
The landmark space opera that launched a global phenomenon on May 25, 1977, will return to official IMAX locations in early 2027, ahead of the exact anniversary date. The re-release is scheduled for February 19, 2027, offering audiences a chance to experience the film on the world’s largest screens.
Depending on the venue, the movie will be presented in either digital IMAX or physical film formats. A newly restored print will screen at a limited number of IMAX 70mm locations. Notably, this version is reported to be shown without the A New Hope subtitle, the Special Edition alterations, or CGI enhancements added in later decades—meaning Han Solo fires his blaster at Greedo first.
Star Wars: Starfighter Launches on Anniversary Weekend
Following the classic re-release, the next chapter in the saga arrives over the 50th anniversary weekend. Star Wars: Starfighter hits theaters on May 28, 2027, and will also receive a dedicated IMAX rollout.
The standalone sci-fi adventure is directed and produced by Shawn Levy (Real Steel, Deadpool & Wolverine, Stranger Things) and stars Ryan Gosling (Drive, Blade Runner 2049, Project Hail Mary) as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue confronted by his mysterious past. The ensemble cast includes Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams.

Star Wars: Starfighter was captured using certified IMAX-approved digital cameras framed specifically for IMAX screen ratios. The footage has been converted to IMAX 70mm film prints for exclusive screenings at select IMAX venues across the United States, ensuring a premium large-format presentation for both the legacy title and the new installment.
