Danny Welbeck: Brighton Reunion Will Be Special

Danny Welbeck is no stranger to facing former Premier League clubs, but Chelsea’s meeting with Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday will carry particular significance for the striker.

Welbeck has represented several Premier League teams during his career and has regularly faced former team-mates. That will happen again when Chelsea take on Brighton this weekend, but the familiarity will not lessen the importance of the fixture.

Brighton remain an important part of Welbeck’s career story, making the match one he is eagerly anticipating.

‘It’s a special one because Brighton are my former team,’ Welbeck said. ‘Fortunately for me, I’ve played against my old teams quite a lot during my career, so it isn’t anything too new.‘I’m really looking forward to it and I’m excited to keep pushing on.’

The fixture will give Welbeck another chance to build on his impressive start to life at Chelsea.

Moving to a new club inevitably involves a period of adjustment as players adapt to different surroundings, team-mates and working methods. However, Welbeck has felt at home since arriving at Cobham.

The forward has appreciated the warm welcome from his new team-mates, staff and Chelsea supporters. The presence of several familiar faces also helped make his transition smoother.

After scoring on his debut against Luton Town on Thursday night, Welbeck is enjoying the early stages of his career as a Chelsea player.

‘I’ve really enjoyed it and it has been pretty easy for me to settle,’ he explained. ‘It’s such a great group and the staff are very welcoming in and around the training ground.‘Everybody has been great with me and I’ve been received really well by the fans, so I really appreciate that.‘It was also nice to know a few familiar faces when I walked through the door, which helped me settle. Now I just want to keep building and improving every single day.’

Welbeck encouraged by Xabi Alonso’s Chelsea start

Welbeck is also relishing the opportunity to work under new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea are continuing to adapt to Alonso’s methods, with new tactical ideas being introduced while players return to the squad at different stages following the World Cup and injuries. Welbeck believes patience and hard work will be essential as those ideas develop, but he has been encouraged by the opening weeks and is excited about the team’s prospects.

‘It’s been really good and it has been a positive start, but we’re only a couple of games in,’ he added. ‘We have to keep working hard and keep learning the new ideas he is bringing to us.‘There are a lot of new messages, while some players came back a little later and new players are being integrated and having to settle. But it has been really good up until now and there are really exciting times ahead.’

Xabi Alonso Defends Leaving Enzo Fernández Out Amid Manchester City Interest

London (AP) — Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso defended his decision to leave Argentina international Enzo Fernández out of the squad for the League Cup victory over Luton amid reported interest from Manchester City.

    Alonso explains Fernández omission

Alonso said Chelsea need players who “sientan el deseo de jugar” when discussing the midfielder’s situation on Friday, ahead of Sunday’s Premier League match against Brighton.

“Necesitamos a los jugadores que estén en la mejor situación para jugar”, señaló Alonso. “Tenemos que tenerlo todo en cuenta: jugadores que están en un buen momento, jugadores que no están sintiendo esa energía para jugar. Para mí es muy importante que sientan ese deseo de jugar y que tengan una buena preparación”.

“Hablamos y decidimos que (para el Luton) era mejor no formar parte de la convocatoria. Es un jugador de primer nivel, no hay duda de eso”.

Chelsea beat third-tier Luton 2-0 without Fernández, relying on a debut goal from new signing Danny Welbeck and a Luton own goal.

Any deal for Fernández, who reached the World Cup final with Argentina last month, would leave Chelsea with little time to sign a replacement before the transfer window closes on Tuesday.

Xabi Alonso Leaves Enzo Fernández Out as Manchester City Move Gains Momentum

Enzo Fernández’s future at Chelsea has come under renewed scrutiny after the Argentine midfielder was left out of the squad for the Carabao Cup second-round match against Luton.

Fernández had reportedly made it clear before the summer that he wanted to leave Stamford Bridge. His omission was personally decided by Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso, who said it was based solely on sporting considerations.

“The decision not to call him up was mine”

    Xabi Alonso

Alonso played down the significance of the absence and described Fernández as a “very professional” footballer who has continued to train well. He said the decision was linked to squad management, player minutes and the specific demands of the match.

“It was simply because of today’s match. We have other players who need minutes”

Alonso explained at the press conference after Chelsea’s win against Luton.

Asked when he had decided to leave Fernández out, Alonso replied:

“Wednesday afternoon. It was a decision I made myself”.

Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that

The Chelsea manager also left the door open for Fernández to return in the next Premier League fixture, when Chelsea host Brighton at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

“Enzo is a good professional. He is training well and I have nothing to say about that. They are simply decisions we have to make with the match we were playing tonight in mind. We’ll see on Sunday”.

Fernández’s omission has gained further significance following reports in England that Manchester City are interested in signing the midfielder. According to Sky Sports, the club is considering making an offer before the transfer window closes on Tuesday at 11:00 p.m.

Reports also indicate that Chelsea are willing to listen to offers for the Argentine international.

Chelsea Edge Past Fulham, Palmer Impresses to Give Alonso First Win

Cole Palmer delivered a decisive performance as Chelsea secured a victory at Craven Cottage, handing Xabi Alonso a winning start in the Premier League against an Alvaro Arbeloa-led Fulham side.

The England international was the architect of the result, finding the back of the net himself before turning provider to set up Joao Pedro for a crucial goal. The combined attacking output proved too much for the home side to handle in the West London derby.

Palmer’s influence was evident throughout the contest. His goal showcased his clinical finishing, while his assist for Joao Pedro highlighted the creative vision that has made him a centerpiece of the Chelsea attack since his arrival. The connection between the pair offered an early glimpse of a potentially potent partnership for the new campaign.

The win marks a successful competitive debut for Alonso in the Chelsea dugout. Facing a familiar face in opposite number Arbeloa, the former Liverpool and Real Madrid teammates renewed their rivalry from the touchline, with Alonso emerging victorious on this occasion.

    Fulham Tested at Craven Cottage

For Fulham, the defeat represents a challenging opening to the season under Arbeloa. Despite the home advantage at Craven Cottage, the Cottagers were unable to contain Chelsea’s attacking threats. The result will prompt an early assessment of the squad’s readiness for the rigors of the Premier League schedule.

The three points provide Chelsea with immediate momentum and a strong platform as they look to establish themselves among the league’s elite under their new management structure.
