Jacob Tremblay’s Netflix film Unabomber tops global charts

Jacob Tremblay’s new Netflix film Unabomber has become the biggest movie on the streaming service, topping its global charts. While Tremblay may appear to be a new star to some viewers, the Canadian actor has built a notable career since childhood, including acclaimed performances in Oscar-recognized films.

From Room to Wonder: Jacob Tremblay’s early breakthrough roles

Tremblay’s first major breakthrough came as the co-star of Room alongside Brie Larson, who won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance. Tremblay later became widely known for Wonder, in which he underwent an extensive physical transformation to play Auggie, a young boy with Treacher Collins syndrome who faces severe facial deformities and bullying after starting at a new school.

The makeup process for Wonder was extensive, but the production had to reduce the traditional application time to comply with child labor laws. Tremblay was 11 when the film was released in 2017. In an interview with ABC News, he described the 90-minute process, saying:

“They had a neck piece, a face piece connected to a mechanism to make my eyes droop, contact lenses, dentures and a wig.“Wearing the prosthetic helped me to become the character.”

Wonder was a major commercial success in addition to receiving an Oscar nomination. The film earned $315 million against a $20 million budget and received an 86% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.9/10 rating on IMDb.

Richard Roeper of the Chicago-Sun Times awarded the film three out of four stars and praised Tremblay’s performance, writing:

“Unrecognizable under the prosthetics and the makeup, Jacob Tremblay is indeed wondrous as Auggie.”

Jacob Tremblay portrays Ted Kaczynski in Unabomber

For Netflix’s Unabomber, Tremblay has taken on a very different transformation. He plays Ted Kaczynski, the infamous domestic terrorist whose decade-plus bombing campaign killed three people and injured 23.

Speaking to CBC News, Tremblay explained how he found a personal connection to Kaczynski, who was a mathematics prodigy and attended Harvard at 16. Tremblay said:

“In this industry, I’m also often the youngest person there. So I could kind of relate to that feeling of awkwardness and not really fitting in. You try and find those parallels, for sure.“It makes me really feel for someone who—like Ted—had so much talent at a young age and had so much potential.“I just really hope that people watching this movie can think about this going forward—about talented people, people with skills, and how they want to elevate them and bring them up in life, rather than using them.”

Unabomber is available to stream on Netflix now.

    Why This Matters

Jacob Tremblay’s success with Unabomber highlights the transition from child stardom to more demanding adult roles. His earlier performances in Room and Wonder established his ability to work through major physical and emotional transformations, while his portrayal of Ted Kaczynski places him in a darker historical and criminal context.
