    According to Boots Hearingcare, difficulty popping the ears can be linked to Eustachian tube dysfunction, sinus congestion or earwax buildup.

    It explains: “It’s advisable to avoid forceful attempts to pop your ears, as this can sometimes exacerbate the issue. Instead, consider strategies like swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum to encourage natural equalisation.”

    Experts recommend seeking medical advice if the problem continues or is accompanied by pain. In Aida’s case, her hearing deteriorated rapidly while she experienced constant fatigue and significant weight loss.

    Speaking to Newsweek, she said: “I started bleeding into my throat, which would only come out of my nose if I was bent at the hip at about 90 degrees.”

    “My hearing got worse and worse. Then I started getting more tired and losing weight.”

    Aida Burkins’ symptoms

    In a TikTok video about her symptoms, Aida explained that she would ‘literally be choking on how much [blood] was just leaking into my throat’.

    She said doctors initially told her it was ‘just altitude sickness’ and that the problem would eventually disappear. However, her symptoms continued to worsen.

    Doctors later discovered that a mass was blocking her Eustachian tube. Aida was referred to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist, where she reported ‘muffled’ hearing and persistent ‘ringing’ in her ears.

    The ENT specialist found that her adenoids were inflamed and recommended removing them. The adenoids are small areas of tissue at the back of the throat, behind the nose, that help fight infection.

    The doctor also said he was ‘suspicious’ that cancer could be responsible, although he considered it unlikely because Aida was only 22.

    The left side of Aida’s throat then became severely swollen, prompting doctors to take a biopsy from her neck. She said her doctor told her that ‘he had never seen anything quite like what she had going on’.

    A CT scan showed ‘lumps and bumps everywhere’, including in lymph nodes at the base of her skull.

    After months of tests, Aida was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in February this year.

    The NHS describes this ‘rare’ cancer as affecting the part of the throat that connects the back of the nose with the back of the mouth, known as the pharynx.

    Symptoms can include a lump in the neck that does not disappear, hearing loss—usually affecting one ear—tinnitus, a blocked nose, nosebleeds, headaches and double vision.

    ‘It was horrifying’

    People diagnosed with NPC are typically treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Aida has undergone both treatments, while surgery is not usually considered because of the difficulty of accessing the affected area.

    Describing the moment she received her diagnosis, Aida said: “Hearing I have cancer, all I thought about was not being able to see my babies grow up or do the things they want to do in life. It was horrifying.”

    Although she is only 22, Aida wants to remind people that ‘cancer doesn’t discriminate’. She is also urging anyone experiencing similar symptoms to advocate for themselves, regardless of age.

    Aida said doctors are ‘optimistic that she’ll be cancer-free’ after she completes treatment. She added: “My prognosis is overall good. “Everything is shrinking and responding to the treatments my doctors have been giving me.”

    In a video accompanying the post, Philipps addressed the publication directly, preserving her signature candor.

    “The Globe is gonna run a story that I am living on borrowed time. To that I say, ‘Aren’t we all motherf***ers?’”

    Philipps revealed in February that she had been diagnosed with a Grade 2 oligodendroglioma, a rare type of brain tumor, which was successfully removed the following month. As she noted in her Instagram callout, her medical team previously spoke to PEOPLE to clarify the prognosis.

    Neuro-oncologist Dr. Alexandra Miller provided details on the diagnosis:

    “It is considered malignant, but it has the best prognosis of all of the malignant gliomas,”

    “It’s sort of defined as a cancerous tumour based on the ability of the tumour to regrow over time, rather than it looking very malignant under the microscope.”

    Following surgery, Philipps does not currently require chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, she will undergo regular scans to monitor for any recurrence.

    Content creator Brent Underwood, known as Ghost Town Living on YouTube, has shared the haunting history of Cerro Gordo after purchasing the abandoned California mining settlement with his life savings. Established in 1865, the former silver-mining town once ranked among the state’s most prosperous, reportedly housing more than 4,500 miners at its peak and yielding nearly $500 million in minerals from the surrounding hills.

    Lawlessness and Violence Defined Daily Life

    Underwood describes a community where law enforcement rarely ventured, leaving miners to settle disputes themselves. This absence of authority contributed to Cerro Gordo’s reputation for extreme violence, though some of the most disturbing stories unfolded underground.

    Tragic Mining Accidents Preserved in Historical Records

    Detailing one infamous incident on his TikTok page (@brentwunderwood), Underwood recounts a catastrophic collapse in the 1870s:

    “An unknown number of Chinese miners went to work, and the roof of the mine collapsed on them, burying them where they were, and unfortunately, their bodies were never recovered,” he explained.

    “And there was an article a few years later where they were finally able to locate one of the bodies, and it was found almost perfectly preserved.”

    “And a few years after that, there’s an article that a man was making his way up this ladder from 900 feet below, and as he almost got to the surface right here, he was pulled in by this cage and he fell 900 feet to the very bottom of this mine where he was found a shapeless mass.”

    “If you look through the newspapers, there’s countless accidents that happened in this mine, which makes it incredibly spooky, especially when you go down there.”

    Last Recorded Murder Remains Unsolved

    The town’s above-ground history was equally grim. Underwood highlights the site of Cerro Gordo’s last recorded murder on December 29, 1892, when Henry Bolin was shot dead following an encounter with William Crapo. Crapo allegedly fled into the surrounding mines and disappeared despite a major manhunt and a $500 reward for his capture.

    Unexplained Personal Experience Adds to Mystery

    Underwood has experienced something he cannot explain himself. While walking past the town’s bunkhouse one evening, he claims he saw curtains open, a face peer through a window, and then disappear. After discovering nobody was staying there, he searched and padlocked the building. The following evening, however, he says the light inside was mysteriously back on. Underwood has since avoided entering the bunkhouse.

    Restoration Efforts Continue Despite Macabre Past

    Despite Cerro Gordo’s dark history, Underwood remains committed to restoring the property. His ultimate goal is to allow more visitors to stay overnight and experience the remarkable ghost town for themselves.
