    Julio Rodríguez’s Late Gaffe Sinks Mariners in Extra-Innings Loss to Red Sox

    Julio Rodríguez misplayed a line drive in center field that led to the tying run in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Boston Red Sox rallied for a 9-8 walk-off victory over the Seattle Mariners in the 10th inning Monday night before a sold-out crowd of 37,487 at Fenway Park.

    The Mariners (64-74) have lost five consecutive games and fallen to a season-worst 10 games under .500. Seattle had taken an 8-5 lead into the eighth inning.

    Red Sox rally late against Mariners

    Trevor Story’s two-out, two-run double off Eduard Bazardo pulled the Red Sox (75-63) within one run at 8-7. Andrés Muñoz then entered and struck out Connor Wong, stranding the tying run at second base to end the eighth.

    After the Mariners stranded Dom Canzone’s leadoff triple at third base in the top of the ninth, Roman Anthony opened the bottom half with a 106.5-mph line drive to center field.

    Rodríguez tentatively attempted a sliding catch, but the ball bounced over him and rolled all the way to the center-field wall. Anthony reached third base with a leadoff triple and scored on Ceddanne Rafaela’s sacrifice fly to Randy Arozarena in left field. Anthony narrowly slid around catcher Cal Raleigh’s tag to tie the game at 8-8.

    Cooper Criswell, activated from the 60-day injured list earlier Monday, took the loss in the 10th inning in his first appearance since June 8. Story drove a 3-2 sinker into the left-center-field gap for the walk-off hit.

    Mariners offense shows signs of life

    Seattle’s struggling offense showed signs of improvement after the Mariners had scored just four total runs in their previous four games.

    Arozarena went 4 for 5 with four RBIs, while Raleigh hit his sixth home run of the past week. George Kirby allowed five runs on seven hits over five innings, surrendering home runs to Mickey Gasper and Jarren Duran.

    Roman Anthony, Trevor Story to Rejoin Red Sox for Finale Against Yankees

    Roman Anthony and Trevor Story are expected to return to the Boston Red Sox for Sunday’s series finale against the New York Yankees, giving Boston two key reinforcements as the club pushes toward the postseason.

    Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy confirmed Saturday that Anthony and Story are set to come off the injured list after extended absences, although Boston had not finalized the corresponding roster moves.

    “They’re coming,” Tracy told reporters Saturday, according to MLB.com. “Not sure what we’re doing yet [with the roster], and we’ll figure that out.”

    Anthony and Story were removed early from their minor league rehab game Saturday with Triple-A Worcester. The two players were later seen leaving the ballpark together with their bags packed.

    Red Sox welcome back injured stars

    Boston has recovered from a slow start and moved into postseason contention without Anthony and Story. All-Star first baseman Willson Contreras said the team is eager to have both players back in the lineup.

    “I think it’s really important for us to get those guys back,” Contreras said. “We need them.”

    Anthony has been out since May 4 because of persistent wrist and finger injuries. The former top prospect had one home run and a .675 OPS in 30 games before landing on the injured list, but he displayed his typical power during his rehab assignment, recording two home runs and a .967 OPS in eight games.

    Story last played for Boston on May 14. The two-time All-Star underwent sports hernia surgery on May 22.

    The Red Sox were 18-25 when Story was injured but have since revived their season through contributions from several players across the roster. Boston enters Sunday with a 74-62 record, six games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians (68-68) for the American League’s second wild-card spot and three games behind the Yankees (77-59), who currently hold the top wild card.

    Boston faces roster decisions

    Anthony is expected to return to his previous role rotating between left field and designated hitter. Story’s return presents a more complicated roster decision after he posted a .547 OPS in 41 games before his injury.

    Andruw Monasterio, Nick Sogard and Tsung-Che Cheng have shared shortstop duties during Story’s absence.

    Contreras emphasized the importance of acknowledging the players who helped Boston remain in contention while Anthony and Story were sidelined. He also noted that the Red Sox must decide which players to remove from the 26-man roster to activate both returning stars.

    “I think those are tough decisions to make,” he said. “I don’t know what’s going to happen [Sunday], but we do have to recognize the job that the guys are doing for this team, and we couldn’t have done what we’ve done without them.”

    Payton Tolle Hugs Dominic Canzone During Play at First Base

    Payton Tolle turned a routine baseball play into one of the most memorable moments of Boston’s 9-8 win over the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park on Monday night, hugging Josh Canzone as he tagged him out at first base.

    Tolle’s hugs are usually reserved for his teammates, particularly Garrett Whitlock, when he returns to the dugout between innings. This time, the 23-year-old pitcher showed some affection in the middle of a play.

    With one out in the top of the third inning, Canzone hit a 51 mph chopper in front of the mound. The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Tolle charged the comebacker and sprinted toward the first-base line to cut Canzone off.

    Tolle stepped in front of Canzone a little more than halfway down the line, bringing both players to a stop. He then opened his arms wide and wrapped them around Canzone while tagging him out at the same time.

    Canzone placed his right arm around Tolle and smiled before heading back to the dugout.

    “It just kind of happened,” said Tolle. “I was right there in front of him, and I was like, ‘Bring it in for the big one.’”

    Did Tolle ever meet Canzone before the hug?

    “No, but we do [know each other] now,” Tolle said.

    Canzone must have been caught by surprise, right?

    “I mean, probably for a second,” Tolle said. “But then it’s like, ‘Yeah, this is just going to happen.’”

    Tolle brings energy after allowing homer

    The hug came moments after Tolle surrendered a towering home run to Randy Arozarena, cutting Boston’s lead to 3-2. Tolle quickly shook off the adversity and shared a lighthearted moment with Canzone.

    The spontaneous exchange reflected Tolle’s determination to enjoy the privilege of playing in the Major Leagues while bringing his distinctive personality to the game.

    Trevor Story, who ended Boston’s victory with a walk-off single, had to think for a moment when asked about the hug.

    “The guy gives hugs all the time, so I’m not sure which one you’re talking about,” quipped Story. “But yeah, that was funny, man. Payton’s just a special person. He plays the game like a little kid, which I feel like we all should.”

    Red Sox Reinstate Roman Anthony and Trevor Story, Team Announces

    The Boston Red Sox reinstated outfielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story to the active roster Sunday, the team announced ahead of the series finale against the New York Yankees.

    Roman Anthony returns from wrist injury

    Anthony, 22, returns after being placed on the injured list May 7 with a right wrist sprain. He played eight rehabilitation games with the WooSox and Double-A Portland, recording two home runs, seven RBIs and two doubles.

    Trevor Story also reinstated

    Story had been placed on the injured list May 16 with a sports hernia. He played 10 rehabilitation games with the WooSox before rejoining the Red Sox.

    Boston also announced that catcher and first baseman Mickey Gasper and infielder Anthony Siegler would be moved to the WooSox.

    The roster moves came hours before the Red Sox lost the season series to the Yankees on Sunday afternoon.
