    As Netflix releases The Whisper Man, Mashable executive producer Mark Stetson spoke with stars Robert De Niro and Adam Scott, director James Ashcroft, and author Alex North about the thriller’s central themes. Their discussion covered generational trauma, the complicated relationship between fathers and sons, and the challenges of adapting North’s acclaimed novel for the screen.

    Generational Trauma at the Heart of The Whisper Man

    Alex North explained which themes from the book were most important to bring to the film: “This is a book that I wanted to write because it was about fathers and sons, and grandfathers and fathers and sons. And different iterations of the way that plays out in terms of generational trauma. How we respond to things that have happened in our childhood, how we protect our children from things that have happened in our childhood, how we pass things down and how we don’t.”

    Adam Scott was particularly drawn to North’s exploration of inherited trauma and strained family relationships. “I thought it was a really interesting part of the script, this horrifying trauma that they are both going through while simultaneously trying to repair their relationship.”

    De Niro also identified the father-son relationship as a key reason he wanted to join the project. “It was one of the things that attracted me to the script, that relationship.”

    Robert De Niro’s Advice for Young Actors

    At the end of the interview, Robert De Niro offered candid advice to young actors who experience imposter syndrome while working alongside performers they admire: “If it manifests in a such a way where it gets in the way of working on a scene, I’d say, ‘It’s ok, don’t worry. In two days, it’s all going to go away. It’s just us.”

    Robert De Niro on Acting at 83, Three Years After the Birth of His Seventh Child

    Robert De Niro may be 83, but the legendary actor shows no signs of slowing down. With The Whisper Man now streaming on Netflix and Focker-in-Law due later this year, De Niro continues to balance a busy acting career with life as a father of seven.

    His youngest child was born just three years ago, when De Niro was 79. In a new interview, the Taxi Driver and Killers of the Flower Moon star discussed the challenge of managing parenthood alongside his demanding career.

    De Niro’s oldest child is 54, while his other six children are 49, 30, 30, 28, 14, and three. Speaking to People, he was asked how he balances fatherhood and acting.

    De Niro answered frankly, saying: “I don’t know if there is a secret.“It’s just managing it all. And there’s no way around not feeling a little guilty about not being there at times you should or you think you should.”

    He described parenting his youngest child as a ‘new experience’, adding: “You just jump in and you have the child and you got to… That’s it.”

    Although many actors reduce their workload in their 80s, De Niro has said he has no plans to retire. Speaking to Esquire about continuing to act, he said: “I might like to do things that are more retiring. Like sit in a place and just look at the view. Take a nice walk. Have a coffee. But not retire. As long as I’m enjoying what I’m doing, why retire?”

    What is The Whisper Man about?

    The Whisper Man centers on a grieving father, played by Adam Scott, whose son is abducted. He seeks help from his own father, a retired police detective, and together they uncover a connection to a decades-old serial killer case involving the Whisper Man.

    The Netflix thriller features an all-star cast that also includes Michael Keaton, Michelle Monaghan, and Hamish Linklater, although De Niro remains its biggest name.

    The Whisper Man was released on Netflix today and has received a mixed response from viewers and critics. The film debuted with a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

    One review from Slate strongly criticized the movie, questioning how it was made and describing De Niro’s performance as ‘phoned in’.

    Variety offered a more positive assessment, writing: “If De Niro never seems overly at pains to inhabit the character of Jersey cop with a cross to bear, his crumpled autopilot paternalism is still a warm asset to the film.”

    The LA Times gave the film the most positive review among major outlets, saying Scott is ‘on fire’ and adding: “De Niro, who can convey emotional volumes with raised palm and a tightly closed mouth, gives him plenty of room to work.”

The filmmakers were unable to interview John-Paul or his new wife, whom he married a year after Mica’s body was discovered. However, video-recorded sermons offer insight into his views on love, marriage, and a wife’s duties. The result is a chilling documentary that does not offer an easy or satisfying conclusion.

    14. Penny Lane Is Dead

    Australian writer-director Mia’kate Russell draws on the ’80s Ozploitation films that helped put Australian horror cinema on the map in Penny Lane Is Dead. The film begins with “school’s out” teen fun and overt Australiana before taking a dark, ultraviolent turn. Viewers should be aware that it includes rape-revenge genre themes.

    After finishing high school, Penny (Bailey Spalding), Toni (Tahlee Fereday), and Amy (Alexandra Jensen) plan a girls’ night to celebrate. Penny’s scheming cousin Kat (Sophia Wright-Mendelsohn) crashes the party with her criminal adult boyfriend and his criminal friends, sending the celebration in a dangerous direction. The film fully embraces its exploitation roots, leaving audiences to decide how that approach lands in 2026.

    12. Motor City

    For stylized action, Motor City follows Reacher star Alan Ritchson as ex-con John Miller, who seeks revenge against Detroit mobster Reynolds (Ben Foster) in 1977.

    Reynolds framed John for a crime and stole his fiancée, Sophia (Shailene Woodley). John’s pursuit unfolds with minimal dialogue and a rock-heavy soundtrack, making every punch feel like part of a headbanging revenge story.

    11. Above & Below

    Some of the friends are held at gunpoint while the others are trapped in a shark cage with only 10 minutes of oxygen remaining. With Antonio Banderas among the cast, this horror-action thriller turns a vacation into an impossible choice.

    9. The Deb

    The film follows Taylah (Natalie Abbott), an awkward farm girl from the small town of Dunburn, where the local debutante ball is a major event.     Best of Streaming This Week: Adults Season 2

    FX’s Gen Z sitcom Adults made a strong impression in its first season by introducing a messy but lovable group of housemates: Samir (Malik Elassal), Billie (Lucy Freyer), Paul Baker (Jack Innanen), Issa (Amita Rao), and Anton (Owen Thiele).

    Season 2 raises the show’s comic energy, with the cast thriving both individually and in ensemble scenes. The new episodes include secret friend groups, awkward pop-star careers, a raccoon invasion, and the possibility of more romantic sparks between Anton and Paul Baker.

    The season contains only eight short episodes, making it easy to binge. Once the finale ends, viewers may be tempted to return to the beginning and revisit the group’s chaotic path into adulthood.
