    Stephen Curry Puts Warriors Contract Extension on Hold but Sends Clear Message About His Future

    Stephen Curry has reached a pivotal stage of his NBA career, with every contract decision potentially shaping the final chapter of his time with the Golden State Warriors. Still, his latest comments made clear that a new deal is not his immediate priority.

    The 38-year-old became eligible over the weekend for a two-year contract extension worth up to $136.7 million. The agreement could keep Curry under contract with Golden State through the summer of 2029, but he is not rushing to sign.

    “There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area.

    Curry is entering the final season of his current contract and is scheduled to earn $62.6 million in 2026-27. Rather than allowing extension negotiations to dominate the conversation ahead of training camp, however, he wants the Warriors focused on preparing for the season.

    “The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season,” Curry said.

    Warriors face bigger questions than Curry’s contract

    Golden State’s most pressing issue is not whether Curry wants to remain with the franchise. The bigger question is whether the Warriors can build another serious playoff team around their longtime star.

    Golden State missed the postseason again last year after losing to Phoenix in the play-in tournament. It was the second time in three seasons that the Warriors failed to reach the playoffs.

    Curry also appeared in only 41 games during an injury-disrupted campaign. His comments therefore focused as much on returning to the court and competing as they did on his contract.

    “Hopefully we’re healthy and we just have a chance to show what we’re capable of, myself included, after missing so many games last year,” Curry said.

    The Warriors continue to believe their championship window has not fully closed, and Curry appears to share that outlook.

    Stephen Curry focused on Year 18 with Golden State

    “The goal stays the same,” Curry said. “Extension stuff, we’ll figure that out at the right time.“

    “But I’m ready for Year 18,” Curry added. “It’s kind of crazy that it’s been this long, and I’m still trying to play at a very high level to help us win, and I’ll be able to do my job.”

    Curry made the comments during the Workday Charity Classic in Palo Alto, an event benefiting Eat. Learn. Play., the foundation he operates with his wife, Ayesha.

    Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and executive vice president Kirk Lacob were also in attendance, making the setting particularly fitting.

    Curry does not sound like a player weighing his options or preparing for a dramatic departure. Instead, he appears willing to let the contract situation resolve itself while he focuses on extending the competitive life of the only NBA team he has ever played for.

    The Warriors have made it clear they are prepared to give their franchise star whatever he wants. The bigger question is how Curry chooses to use that leverage—and what his decision means for Golden State’s next championship run.

    “What the terms of a new extension look like for Curry will be completely up to him, as the Warriors are prepared to offer their star whatever he wants,” NBA insider Brett Siegel wrote. “If Steph wants the full $136.7 million through the 2028-29 season, he will get that. If he wants to take a discount to help the team, GM Mike Dunleavy Jr. will have no problem with said deal.”

    The timing of Curry’s decision could be as important as the value of the contract. ESPN’s Bobby Marks explained the current restrictions:

    “From now until June 30, Curry is eligible to sign up to a two-year/$136.7M extension. Because of the Over 38 rule, 2 years is the maximum allowed in an extension. He can sign for up to 3 seasons if he waits until FA.”

    If Curry signs immediately, the Warriors would commit significant salary to the veteran guard and limit their financial flexibility. If he waits, Golden State could enter next summer with considerably more room to reshape its roster.

    Brian Windhorst has argued that delaying the extension could be Curry’s smartest option.

    “If he chooses to sign right now, he could get two years at $140 million,” Windhorst said.

    “Obviously if that’s what he says he wants, you give it to him. But if he doesn’t sign his contract extension right now the Warriors could have over $100 million in salary cap space next summer.”

    Warriors’ roster plans depend on Curry

    That is the central choice facing Curry: sign now and secure a major payday, or wait and give the Warriors greater flexibility to build a stronger contender around him before the end of his career.

    Golden State’s current roster is not yet at a championship level, while Curry has made clear that he still wants to compete for NBA titles. The Warriors want him to remain with the franchise for life, and the belief is that Curry wants the same.

    Between accepting a maximum extension and taking a deliberate pause, Curry’s decision could shape the next era of the Warriors. The franchise, its fans and the rest of the NBA will be watching closely when he puts pen to paper.
