South Africa vs New Zealand: Key Takeaways from Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry Series

South Africa thrive in must-win scenarios. According to Brits, the Springboks come alive when their backs are against the wall.

World Number One Status Regained After Ellis Park Defeat

A loss at Ellis Park temporarily cost the Springboks their world number one ranking, a position they quickly reclaimed. The defeat also exposed vulnerabilities in a side that has lost pool-stage matches at the past two Rugby World Cups.

Springboks Enter 2025 World Cup as Favourites

South Africa are currently favoured to win next year’s tournament in Australia, bringing a level of expectation the squad has not previously faced.

We hate being the favourite, we almost have to have our backs against the wall, Brits said.

We prefer not to have the eyes on us and move under the radar. I think that is the best way for any team.

France Identified as Primary Tactical Rival

Back-to-back Six Nations champions France sent a weakened side to Christchurch in July, losing 34-32 to New Zealand. When the two sides met last November, the Springboks won emphatically, 32-17.

Brits believes France are the most settled opponent and possess tactical flexibility comparable to the world champions.

I feel like South Africa have an advantage as they can play multiple styles, and it feels like most other nations don’t have that capability, Brits said.

The only team that can play multiple styles is France, as they can grind it out with the forwards, play the kicking game and the expansive game as well.

England and Ireland Remain Dangerous Contenders

Brits added that England still need to become what they are supposed to be, while warning against overlooking Ireland, who are travelling under the radar after peaking in previous World Cup cycles before the tournament.

Ireland still have amazing rugby players and coaches – the best coaches out there – and a top-four squad, Brits added. Be careful of Ireland.

Planes Fly Less Than 50 Feet Above Rugby Stadium in Dramatic Springboks vs. All Blacks Stunt in South Africa

Two Airlink aircraft delivered a dramatic pre-match spectacle at Cape Town’s DHL Stadium before South Africa faced New Zealand in the “Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry” series.

The planes flew less than 50 feet above the stadium, with one aircraft painted Springbok green and the other featuring black livery symbolizing the All Blacks. The striking flyover paid tribute to both teams ahead of kick-off.

Airlink flyover precedes South Africa’s victory

Airlink shared footage of the daring stadium flyover online, while Flightradar24 confirmed how close the aircraft came to the venue.

The spectacle set the stage for another intense chapter in the rivalry. South Africa ultimately defeated New Zealand 33-26 in a hard-fought second Test.
