Alan Ritchson Unrecognizable in Forgotten ‘American Idol’ Audition Where Simon Cowell Walked Off Set

Alan Ritchson, now widely recognized as the star of Amazon Prime’s Reacher and a leading action hero, first caught the public’s attention long before he donned the mantle of Jack Reacher. His early claim to fame included roles as Aquaman on Smallville and Thad Castle on Blue Mountain State, but for many fans, the first glimpse of Ritchson came during his run on American Idol season three.

Paula Abdul’s ‘Totally Hot’ Comment and the Audition That Went Viral

At the time, Ritchson was working as a fashion model. His audition became memorable after judge Paula Abdul described him as ‘totally hot’, joking that this ‘didn’t influence her decision… that much’. The moment escalated when Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell walked out to let him sing directly to Abdul, with Ritchson dropping to one knee in front of her. After she hugged him following his performance, he joked that his fellow judges were ‘jealous’ when they tried to move her away. Jackson advised him to avoid using runs in his singing, but ultimately all three judges voted yes, sending him through to Hollywood.

From Villain Edit to Hollywood Week: The Reality TV Experience

Between the initial audition and the Hollywood rounds, Ritchson received what he later called a ‘villain edit’. Producers portrayed him flirting with and pushing a fellow contestant into a pool—a scenario he revealed on Jimmy Kimmel Live! he had been instructed to perform. His Hollywood week performance was widely regarded as cringe-worthy, and he was eliminated before the finals.

How American Idol Opened Doors to Acting: Aquaman and Beyond

Despite the early exit, Ritchson credits the show with launching his career. In an interview with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert podcast, he described American Idol as an ‘eye-opening experience’ that ‘opened some doors’. Shortly after his appearance, he landed the role of Aquaman on Smallville, marking his entry into professional acting.

Ritchson’s Reflection: ‘I Wanted to Be Around People Who Were Like I’m Going to Die If I Don’t Get This Thing’

Recalling the moment he was cut, Ritchson said he remained relatively unfazed, but noted the dramatic reaction of another eliminated contestant who ‘fell to the ground like a cockroach, it was like her life was over’. He explained:

“I was just observing it like ‘what is it like to want something that bad?’ I’d never felt that before.”

    He continued:

“It made me want to move out to LA. I still didn’t know about acting at that point… I wanted to be around people who were like I’m going to die if I don’t get this thing.”

Ritchson has since stated that if he ever meets Paula Abdul again, he would ‘thank her for the crack in the door’—a testament to how a single audition reshaped his trajectory from model to leading man.

Netflix and MCU Stars Are Identical Twins, Not the Same Person; Viewers Baffled

Fans of Netflix’s Ginny & Georgia were left stunned after discovering that actor Aaron Ashmore — not his identical twin brother Shawn — portrays Gil Timmins in the series. The revelation sparked widespread disbelief across social media, with many viewers convinced they had been watching Shawn Ashmore, known for his role as Wesley Evers on The Rookie and as Iceman in the X-Men franchise.

    Reddit Thread Exposes Widespread Confusion

A post on the Ginny & Georgia subreddit last year ignited a flood of reactions after a user shared their shock at learning there are two Ashmore brothers.

“This whole time I thought I was watching Shawn Ashmore from the Rookie,”

    the post read.

“It turns out that Shawn Ashmore and Aaron Ashmore are twins. I had seen Shawn in the Rookie play Wesley, a very sweet and kind husband and very unlike Gil. It turns out the actors are twins!”

The thread quickly filled with similar responses.

“You’re telling me these are two different people?”

    one bemused Redditor asked.

“I am glad I am not the only one who got so confused thinking I was watching Shawn Ashmore the whole time.”

    Another user wrote:

“I was like omg that’s literally the same person, wtf. Then realising they are twins, and they are genetically, literally the same lol.”

    A fourth simply exclaimed:

    “WHAT!!!???”

Identical Twins with Parallel Acting Careers

Born on October 7, 1979, in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada, Shawn and Aaron Ashmore are identical twins, with Shawn older by one minute. Both have built successful acting careers, often leading to cases of mistaken identity.

Shawn Ashmore gained global recognition as Bobby Drake, aka Iceman, in the X-Men film series. He also appeared in two episodes of Smallville as Eric Summers. Aaron Ashmore played Jimmy Olsen in 53 episodes of Smallville and joined Ginny & Georgia in its third season (2023), appearing in 14 episodes as Gil Timmins.

Early Career: Coin Flips and Commercial Casting

The brothers’ striking resemblance shaped their entry into the entertainment industry. As children, they auditioned for commercials together, and casting directors frequently struggled to tell them apart.

Shawn recounted the experience to US Weekly:

“When we were doing commercials, they would call us back in after we both auditioned,”

    he said.

“And [they] said, ‘We love you guys both. And so it’s fair, we’re gonna flip a coin so that you guys can see it’s not preferential treatment.’”

    That scenario repeated multiple times.

“That happened four or five times where they’d say, ‘Hey, come on, come in, we’re gonna hire one of you.”

    Shawn continued:

“But so that the other one doesn’t get their feelings hurt or they don’t think it’s personal, we’re gonna flip a coin in front of you guys.”

Aaron was initially cast for their first commercial but fell ill on the shoot day. Shawn stepped in as his double — a moment that foreshadowed a career defined by their uncanny similarity.
