How to Play Pips: Rules and Mechanics
If you have played traditional dominoes, the basic tile placement will feel familiar. Tiles are placed vertically or horizontally and connect to adjacent tiles. However, Pips introduces a critical twist: color-coded conditional spaces that dictate the value of pips (dots) within their boundaries.
Unlike standard dominoes, touching tiles do not need to match numbers. Instead, you must satisfy the specific mathematical condition assigned to each colored zone. It is common for only half of a domino to sit inside a conditioned space; the rule applies only to the pips residing within that zone.
Areas without color coding have no conditions, offering free placement zones.
Common Condition Types
- Number: All pips in the space must sum to the displayed number.
- Equal: Every domino half in the space must show the same pip count.
- Not Equal: Every domino half in the space must show a different pip count.
- Less Than: Every domino half in the space must sum to less than the displayed number.
