Gabriel’s Pathway at Manchester United
The prospect of winning major youth honours with Manchester United initially attracted Gabriel to Old Trafford. The club also outlined a clear route to the first team, beginning with involvement in senior training sessions under Ruben Amorim and later Michael Carrick.
Pre-Season Opportunities and Setbacks
Speculation surrounded a possible first-team debut last season, though eligibility rules limited Gabriel to the FA Cup as he was too young for the Premier League. Under-18 coach Darren Fletcher deployed him centrally rather than in his preferred wide position, believing the role would afford more space to showcase his natural ability. Fletcher, in interim charge for the FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton in January 2026, opted against playing Gabriel, and United’s defeat ended any further senior match opportunities that term.
Nevertheless, Gabriel became a regular in first-team training, raising expectations that he would feature during the pre-season programme. His absence from the opening trip to Helsinki for a match against Wrexham on 18 July was attributed to his return date for pre-season training. He subsequently travelled with four of the five matchday squads but played only once, logging eight minutes against Atletico Madrid in Stockholm on 1 August. During that brief appearance, Gabriel produced a couple of trademark runs and shots but was also caught by a heavy challenge from behind by Uruguay captain Jose Maria Gimenez, a moment that underscored concerns at the club about his physical readiness for senior football.
Rising Competition and UEFA Registration Hurdles
That limited playing time may have fuelled discontent, especially as long-standing academy teammates received more pre-season exposure and 18-year-old summer signing Tynan Thompson earned a 45-minute senior debut against Leeds at Croke Park just three weeks after arriving from Tottenham. Despite this, the prevailing view was that Gabriel would still become United’s youngest ever player this autumn, most likely in the EFL Cup.
The third-round draw paired United with Brighton again at Old Trafford, but the Champions League schedule offered an alternative route. The home fixture against Azerbaijan champions Sabah FK appeared to be the most accessible game on the calendar. United led 3-0 at half-time and Carrick used all five substitutes by the 72nd minute, yet Gabriel was not among them. UEFA registration rules stipulate that a 15-year-old can only play if named on the club’s ‘A’ list of 25 players. United submitted a full 25-man squad that included midfielder Manuel Ugarte, who is sidelined with a knee injury until the January registration window, and Thompson. Gabriel was omitted.
It remains unclear whether this was an oversight or a strategic decision to prioritise Thompson given that Gabriel becomes eligible for the ‘B’ list next month when he turns 16. Either way, the chance to debut in that match and claim the record as the club’s youngest player—a distinction held by goalkeeper David Gaskell, who was 16 years and 19 days old when he debuted in 1956—was lost.
Brighton Match: The Next Opportunity That Won’t Happen
United sources insist Gabriel was set to make his debut in the upcoming EFL Cup tie against Brighton. That opportunity has now evaporated.
