Ripple’s $RLUSD Reserves Exceed Outstanding Supply

Ripple’s dollar-linked stablecoin, $RLUSD, had an outstanding supply of 2,325,969,308 tokens on Aug. 31, according to an independent reserve attestation. The reserves backing those tokens had a market value of $2,446,312,864, leaving approximately $120.3 million more in reserve assets than the number of tokens in circulation.

Ripple’s independent accountant examined reserve disclosures for Aug. 17 and Aug. 31. In its examination dated Sept. 29, the accountant concluded that management’s assertion was fairly stated, in all material respects, under the specified criteria.

The reserve figures followed an earlier September supply milestone of $2.44 billion. At that point, approximately $1.37 billion was held on Ethereum and $1.05 billion was held on the $XRP Ledger (XRPL), a public network used to transfer assets. The distribution placed the larger share of $RLUSD circulation on Ethereum rather than XRPL.

Ripple’s Stablecoin Oversight and Reserve Framework

Separate transparency figures published by Ripple for Sept. 24 listed $2.409 billion in circulating $RLUSD against $2.5315 billion in backing assets. That represented approximately $122.5 million in backing above the amount of tokens in circulation.

$RLUSD is issued by Ripple subsidiary Standard Custody & Trust Company, a limited-purpose trust company supervised by the New York State Department of Financial Services. The issuer operates under reserve requirements and continuing supervision through a state trust charter governing its custody and related financial activities.

The framework requires assets backing $RLUSD holders to remain separate from the company’s own property. For businesses, stablecoins such as $RLUSD can provide a way to move dollar-denominated value across public blockchain networks and exchange platforms without requiring recipients to accept a cryptocurrency whose value may fluctuate. Reserve quality and the ability to redeem tokens for dollars are key factors supporting that stability.

    Exchange Liquidity Broadens $RLUSD Access

Access to $RLUSD is also expanding through shared liquidity, or the funds available to support swaps between different dollar-denominated assets. McDonald highlighted Spark’s Stablecoin FX Layer on Uniswap v4, a decentralized exchange protocol.

The $RLUSD/USDS market processed more than $600 million during its first week. The market pairs Ripple’s stablecoin with Sky’s USDS stablecoin. Spark launched the liquidity layer in June with approximately $150 million across other dollar-linked markets.

    RippleX Adds AI Payment Support

Ripple’s developer division, RippleX, has provided another route for automated transactions through an updated $XRP Ledger AI Starter Kit. According to McDonald’s update, the kit supports the Machine Payments Protocol, which was co-authored by payments company Stripe and payments-focused blockchain Tempo.

The integration allows developers to arrange one-time payments initiated by AI agents. Those payments can use $XRP, the XRP Ledger’s native cryptocurrency, or issuer-created tokens such as $RLUSD.

McDonald’s update also cited a Ripple-commissioned analysis of stablecoin adoption among institutions in the Asia-Pacific region. The research identified potential applications for $RLUSD in cross-border settlement, treasury funding, and transactions involving blockchain-based financial assets.

    Why This Matters

The reserve disclosures, regulatory structure, exchange activity, and AI-payment integration show the different areas Ripple is developing around $RLUSD. Stablecoin use by institutions depends not only on the token’s ability to maintain a dollar-linked value, but also on reserve transparency, custody arrangements, compliance, liquidity, and compatibility with existing financial systems.

The Asia-Pacific research described cross-border payments, treasury operations, and blockchain-based financial transactions as potential routes for institutional adoption. The development of those use cases remains linked to how effectively stablecoins integrate with established financial infrastructure and meet institutional requirements for oversight and asset protection.
