Uganda Reverses Invictus Games Withdrawal After King Charles Reassurance

Uganda has reversed its decision to withdraw from the Invictus Games founded by the Duke of Sussex after the country’s military chief said he received reassurance from King Charles III regarding the nation’s participation.

Initial Withdrawal Linked to Royal Tensions

Last week, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba—the eldest son of President Yoweri Museveni and Chief of Defence Forces—announced Uganda’s withdrawal in a post on X (formerly Twitter). He cited his respect for the King amid division over the Harry-Meghan nonsense.

In the earlier post, Kainerugaba shared concerns that Uganda’s participation would be construed as being opposed to his majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, adding that the country would not participate in anything that does not have his majesty’s approval.

The announcement followed speculation regarding an official letter from Buckingham Palace to senior UK government and military officials reiterating that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not working royals and would not use their HRH styles. The palace had also indicated the Invictus Games were a private charity organisation.

    Reinstatement After Buckingham Palace Call

On Monday, the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) spokesperson, Chris Magezi, announced that Kainerugaba had reinstated Uganda’s participation in the 2027 Invictus Games, scheduled for Birmingham.

Magezi wrote that the shift followed a telephone conversation between Kainerugaba and the Principal Private Secretary to the King and Queen, Clive Alderton. According to Magezi, Alderton revealed that King Charles III was moved by Gen Kainerugaba’s sensitive consideration of the king’s opinion on the upcoming Invictus Games organised by Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex.

Magezi added that Charles has no problem with Uganda’s participation in the Invictus Games, and encouraged the [Chief of Defence Forces] CDF to proceed with preparations.

Kainerugaba appreciated the king’s message and clarity provided by Buckingham Palace on the subject, promising that the UPDF would resume preparations to participate in the upcoming games.

    Internal Pressure and Political Context

When asked by The Times about the motivation behind the initial withdrawal, Kainerugaba is reported to have said:

I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.

Kainerugaba, a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst like Prince Harry, was appointed army chief in 2024 and is widely viewed as a potential successor to his 81-year-old father. He has a history of provocative posts on X, including threats to invade Kenya and comments directed at public figures such as Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine.

Two months prior to the withdrawal saga, Prince Harry stood alongside Uganda’s Defence Minister, Kiryowa Kiwanuka, at a London event to announce Uganda as the 26th nation to join the multisport competition for wounded service personnel.

    Invictus Games Foundation Welcomes Return

Rob Owen, CEO of the Invictus Games Foundation, welcomed the development:

We welcome the news that Uganda has confirmed it will continue to be part of the Invictus community and participate in the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, now less than 300 days away.

Uganda became our 26th nation earlier this year, joining a growing movement that provides year-round recovery opportunities for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and veterans across the world.

SNL UK Season 2 Opens with Scathing Royal Family Sketch at Balmoral

The second season of SNL UK premiered this weekend, launching with an opening sketch that takes sharp aim at the British royal family. The cold open transports viewers to Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where Prince Harry and Meghan Markle pay a visit to King Charles III and Queen Camilla.

    Cast and Characters

The sketch features Jack Shep as Prince Harry and Ayoade Bamgboye as Meghan Markle. Larry Dean portrays King Charles, while Emma Sidi takes on the role of Queen Camilla. The ensemble wastes no time establishing the tense dynamic between the Sussexes and the monarch.

Charles Delivers Cutting Lines to Harry

King Charles immediately confronts his younger son about the visit, delivering a biting remark about the couple’s commercial ventures. “Don’t tell me you’ve spent all your Netflix money already,” Charles says to Harry.

The sketch escalates from there. The most brutal joke lands when Charles tells Harry, “What a waste you’ve become. You’re lucky your father isn’t around to see this.”

The line references Prince Philip, Harry’s grandfather, who died in 2021. The remark underscores the show’s willingness to mine the ongoing public fractures within the royal family for comedy.

    SNL UK Continues Satirical Tradition

The season two premiere signals that the British adaptation of the long-running American franchise intends to match its counterpart’s political and cultural bite. By centering the monarchy — a perennial lightning rod in UK media — the sketch sets a provocative tone for the season ahead.

Meghan Markle Shares Rare Family Photo During UK Visit

The Duchess of Sussex has offered a rare glimpse into her family life, posting an intimate photograph featuring Prince Harry and their two children, Princess Lilibet and Prince Archie, during their recent visit to the United Kingdom.

    A Private Moment Made Public

The image, shared on the Duchess’s social media channels, marks one of the few occasions the couple has released a candid family portrait since stepping back from senior royal duties. The photograph captures the family of four together on British soil, a notable moment given the Duke and Duchess’s primary residence in California.

Children Growing Up Away from the Spotlight

Prince Archie, born in May 2019, and Princess Lilibet, born in June 2021, have largely been kept out of the public eye. The couple has consistently prioritized their children’s privacy, making this shared moment particularly significant for royal watchers and the public alike.

The UK visit comes amid ongoing public interest in the Sussexes’ relationship with the Royal Family and their transatlantic life. While the specific timing and context of the trip were not detailed in the post, the family photograph serves as a personal update from the couple to their global audience.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Roasted on ‘SNL UK’ Over Return to England

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are facing widespread ridicule in the United Kingdom following their high-profile return to British soil. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex became the target of satire during the Season 2 premiere of Saturday Night Live UK, where cast members lampooned the couple’s recent public appearance.

SNL UK Mocks Sussexes’ UK Visit

The sketch aired shortly after Harry and Meghan attended a youth-focused event in London, marking their first joint public engagement in the UK since stepping back from royal duties in 2020. The SNL UK cold open featured actors portraying the couple, exaggerating their media strategy and perceived victim narrative for comedic effect.

British tabloids and social media users quickly amplified the segment, with headlines characterizing the portrayal as a sign of shifting public sentiment. Commentators noted that the satire reflects growing fatigue among UK audiences toward the couple’s media ventures, including their Netflix docuseries, memoir Spare, and ongoing interviews.

    Public Reaction and Media Coverage

Reaction to the sketch has been mixed. Supporters of the Sussexes argue the parody relies on outdated tropes and ignores their charitable work, while critics say it captures a genuine disconnect between the couple’s self-presentation and public perception in Britain.

Neither Buckingham Palace nor representatives for the Duke and Duchess have issued an official response to the broadcast. The SNL UK episode is available for streaming on Sky and NOW in the UK.

Reports emerged last month indicating that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are planning a move back to Prince Harry’s home country. The development marks a potential shift in the couple’s residential arrangements following their relocation to North America.

While specific details regarding the timeline and exact location remain unconfirmed by official representatives, the news suggests a renewed connection to the United Kingdom for the Sussex family. Observers note that such a move would facilitate closer proximity to the Royal Family and British institutions.

Further announcements are expected to clarify the scope of the relocation, including whether it represents a permanent return or a part-time arrangement.

King Charles Draws Line With Harry and Meghan as Private Citizens, Expert Says

King Charles III has drawn a firm “line in the sand” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after Buckingham Palace circulated a letter spelling out the couple’s non-working royal status. The move comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told People magazine they were “surprised” by the timing of the clarification.

Palace Letter Reiterates Non-Working Royal Status

On September 7, a senior palace official reiterated that Harry and Meghan are non-working royals, according to People magazine. The letter, issued on behalf of the king by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon, was shared with the Sussexes. A spokesperson for the couple said they were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance,” the BBC reported.

Sources close to the couple told People they received the letter and, 20 minutes later, sent back questions. However, they were informed the letter had already been circulated to the media.

The document pointed out that the couple are “private citizens” and their His and Her Royal Highness styles remain in abeyance and are not used.

Royal Commentators Weigh In on King’s Decision

British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital the guidance made one thing clear: they “do not represent the Crown.”

“King Charles’ narrative is decisive as he draws a line in the sand — nothing new here, no more discussion required,” Chard told Fox News Digital. “I’m sure the Sussexes expected flexibility. Prince Harry may be the king’s son, but he lacks power to amend and dictate the monarch’s statement.“

“There is no ambiguity about who is in and who is out,” she said. “The king is protecting the institution. The public has made it clear they do not want the monarchy to be undermined or damaged by confusion. The letter’s statement puts minds at rest.“

“In part, yes, the monarchy can only have one voice,” Chard shared. “Prince William and Princess Catherine are the future king and queen. They officially speak for the crown alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla. It’s constitutional, and the crown takes precedence.“

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said there’s another, more silent message the king wants to convey.

“The letter states the palace’s position, but it’s clearly intended as a put-down after the way the royals were blindsided by the Sussexes returning to Britain,” he claimed.

“The Sussexes see themselves as public figures, not private citizens,” he said. “So, they are ‘surprised,’ but are unlikely to alter their plans. The king was never going to debate anything with the Sussexes. The royals don’t debate, although Queen Elizabeth’s ‘recollections may vary’ is legendary.“

Full Text of the Palace Letter

The letter, as quoted by People, reads:

“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family,” stated the letter, as quoted by People. “This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.“

“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” it continued. “Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.“

Chard Calls Letter a “Reality Check”

“It shouldn’t have been a shock,” she said. “The update was inevitable and warranted. Harry and Meghan unexpectedly swanned back to the U.K. and seemingly hoped to continue as if they were still working royals. The blurred lines created an air of confusion, with the majority wondering if Harry was back in the fold of the institution. The petty comment batted back from Team Sussex highlighted bruised egos.“

“Allegedly the Sussexes were caught off guard. The irony when you consider Harry’s book ‘Spare,’ their Netflix documentaries and the Oprah interview catching the British royal family off guard over the years.“

    Uganda Withdraws from Invictus Games

The fallout extended beyond the palace. On September 9, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and head of the country’s armed forces, announced Uganda’s withdrawal from the Invictus Games.

“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games,” he wrote on X. “We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.“

“I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.“

A source close to Harry told People:

“They made it very clear that the reason they pulled out was a direct result of perceived guidance from the Lord Chamberlain. This was an unintended or intended consequence of the letter — and that was always going to happen. Hence the wish not to rush it out.“

“The only people suffering as a result are the competitors from Uganda who would have been taking part in next year’s Invictus Games,” the insider added.

    Experts Divided on Impact

British royal expert Hilary Fordwich criticized the Sussexes’ response.

“Harry blaming this letter for Uganda pulling out of the Invictus Games is a ghastly move on his part,” she said. “No doubt Harry and Meghan thought King Charles would accommodate their return or at least consult with them. But their expectations weren’t relevant for the royals.“

Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital he believes the letter has caused more harm than good in any peace talks.

“My personal opinion on the decision by King Charles to make public a letter conceived by the Lord Chamberlain to reiterate that Harry and Meghan were not working royals was an act of malicious intent initiated by those intending to disrupt their return,” he explained.

“The message was unjustified,” said Turner. “I hope Harry and Meghan will not rise to the bait and retaliate but calmly move on.“

    Palace Insiders: No New Policy

People reported that the king remains supportive of organizations and initiatives like the Invictus Games that help wounded service personnel. Palace insiders pointed out the letter does not represent a new policy but reiterates terms agreed to at the 2020 “Sandringham Summit” led by the late Queen Elizabeth II, shortly before Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals and moved to California.

Royal author Robert Jobson previously told The Daily Mail:

“Perhaps predictably, there was an immediate response from the couple,” he told the outlet. “But don’t expect to see anything similar coming from the palace. The king has no intention of being drawn into responding further.“

While the Sussexes have returned to the U.K. for an extended stay, they will not resume their roles as working royals. They plan to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London while maintaining their California home and a property in Portugal.

Uganda Withdraws from Invictus Games Amid Royal Tensions

Prince Harry’s flagship Invictus Games, scheduled for Birmingham next year, has suffered a significant setback after Uganda announced its withdrawal. The decision appears linked to the escalating public dispute between Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which intensified following a formal letter from King Charles III.

    Royal Dispute Escalates Publicly

The controversy erupted on Monday when King Charles issued a letter describing Harry and Meghan as “private citizens” and reaffirming they were not permitted to use their royal HRH titles. The Duke and Duchess, who are reportedly moving back to the UK after years in the US, responded by stating they were “surprised” and sought to portray themselves as “public figures” while questioning the rationale behind the letter’s release.

Uganda Cites Lack of Royal Approval

With Commonwealth nations observing the fallout, Uganda’s General Muhoozi Kainerugaba — son of the Ugandan president — declared on Wednesday that his country would not participate in the Games without the express permission of King Charles. The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry in 2014 to support wounded servicemen and women.

A Sussex insider speaking with ITV connected the withdrawal directly to Monday’s letter:

“Intended or unintended, this is clearly a consequence of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that was rushed out without consultation on Monday.”

“Sadly, the only people who will suffer are the Invictus Games competitors.”

    General Kainerugaba’s Strong Stance

General Kainerugaba, who has been outspoken on the Sussexes, told The Times:

“I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.”

In a subsequent post on X (formerly Twitter), he elaborated:

“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games.”

“We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.”

The Uganda High Commission has been contacted for further comment.

Prince Harry Has ‘No Way Back’ to Family Even If Marriage ‘Goes Pear-Shaped,’ Ex-Palace Insider Claims

A royal biographer has ruled out any possibility of Prince Harry returning to working royal duties, even if his marriage to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, were to end. The assessment comes as fallout continues from King Charles III’s formal letter confirming the Sussexes’ permanent status as non-working members of the royal family.

No Path Back for Prince Harry, Says Former Palace Aide

Speaking to the Daily Express, royal expert and former Palace aide Dickie Arbiter dismissed speculation that a marital breakdown could open a route for the Duke of Sussex to resume official duties. Arbiter stated the King’s Monday letter makes clear that the 2020 “half-in-half-out” arrangement remains in force.

“There’s no way back for him as a working royal,” said Dickie. “Even if the marriage goes pear-shaped and they separate, he won’t be a working royal again.”

Arbiter identified the couple’s media strategy as their most damaging decision. He criticized their engagement with American television and the reception it received across the Atlantic.

“The worst is how they’ve sold themselves to the media, to television in particular, American television, and how the Americans bought into it.”

“The Americans, they’re quite gullible actually. I’m sorry to say.”

King Charles Confirms Permanent Non-Working Status

The monarch’s letter addresses several ongoing disputes. It confirms Harry and Meghan will be regarded as private citizens “with commercial and charitable interests” and are not to use “HRH” titles in any official capacity. Security inquiries are to be directed to Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Sussex remains embroiled in a legal battle with the Home Office over taxpayer-funded security during UK visits. He is also pursuing privacy claims against Daily Mail publishers and other news organizations alongside other high-profile figures. Controversy has persisted over the couple’s use of royal titles despite their agreement to cease using them in an official capacity.

    New Book Offers Further Insight

Arbiter’s comments coincide with the release of his book, On Duty with the Royals, officially published Thursday, 10 September 2026. The publication arrives as the royal household continues to navigate the long-term implications of the Sussexes’ departure from official duties.
