Vicky Krieps Plays Dual Roles in ‘Monsters: The Lizzie Borden Story’ as Characters Share Scenes

    Key Highlights

    • Vicky Krieps portrays dual roles in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story — primary character Bridget ‘Maggie’ Sullivan and historical figure Countess Elizabeth Báthory in fantasy flashback sequences.
    • The fourth instalment of Ryan Murphy’s Netflix anthology premiered on 19 September 2024, dramatizing the unsolved 1892 axe murders of Andrew and Abby Borden in Fall River, Massachusetts.
    • Historical consultant Dr. Annouchka Bayley challenges the ‘Blood Countess’ legend, suggesting Báthory may have been the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt rather than a serial killer.

Vicky Krieps Anchors Dual Roles in Latest Monster Anthology

Luxembourg-born actress Vicky Krieps commands significant screen time in the fourth season of Netflix’s Monster anthology, Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, which debuted on 19 September 2024. The 42-year-old performer takes on a demanding dual assignment: her primary role as Bridget ‘Maggie’ Sullivan, the Bordens’ housekeeper, and a secondary portrayal of Countess Elizabeth Báthory — the infamous “Blood Countess” — in stylized fantasy flashback sequences filmed in Italy. The casting decision for Báthory came late in production, with co-creator Ian Brennan revealing to Tudum that the role remained unfilled until Ryan Murphy proposed Krieps. “That was all shot in Italy, so we knew that that would be at the end of the schedule anyway, and we just couldn’t think of who would do it or who seemed right,” Brennan explained. “It was Ryan’s idea. He pitched it to her and she loved it. Now it seems like such an obvious choice, but it actually came very late in the process.”

A Catalyst for Chaos in the Borden Household

As Bridget Sullivan, Krieps embodies what Brennan describes as a disruptive force within the repressed Borden family dynamic. “She’s like a foreign object that gets introduced to this ecosystem, and completely turns it on its head,” he told TV Insider. The character introduces Lizzie Borden (played by Ella Beatty) to literature, hair dye, sex toys, and the concept of revenge — elements that destabilize the rigid household headed by Andrew Borden (Charlie Hunnam) and his wife Abby (Rebecca Hall). “I think Lizzie’s just completely perplexed [by Bridget] at first. She becomes, very quickly, an object of deep fascination and then desire,” Brennan added. Beatty characterized her collaboration with Krieps as the “most incredible partner in crime,” a description that resonates given the series’ murder-centric narrative.

Ryan Murphy’s Vision: A Feminist, Unapologetic Reimagining

Krieps offered insight into Murphy’s creative direction for Bridget during an interview with Vanity Fair. “The way Ryan thought of it, she’s almost like a Mary Poppins that comes out of nowhere, who can be anyone from any time. Ryan said, ‘It’s women-driven, feminist, lesbian, dirty, unapologetic’.” This framing positions the series as a deliberate subversion of traditional true-crime storytelling, centering female agency and desire within a historical case that has long been sensationalized through a patriarchal lens. The Borden murders — Andrew and Abby Borden were hacked to death with an axe in August 1892 — resulted in Lizzie’s acquittal, though she lived under suspicion until her death in 1927 at age 66.

The Blood Countess: Historical Horror as Narrative Mirror

The Báthory flashbacks serve as a thematic counterpoint to Lizzie’s story. In the series, Maggie recounts the legend of the Hungarian noblewoman who allegedly bathed in the blood of virgins to preserve her youth. “She was completely restored,” Maggie tells Lizzie. “Because…blood is life.” Historical records accuse Elizabeth Báthory of torturing and killing hundreds of young women between 1590 and 1610 alongside four servants; she was imprisoned in Csejte Castle until her death in 1614, while her alleged accomplices were executed. The show depicts her bathing first in milk, then escalating to blood to achieve “pure white skin like a child.” Folklore links Báthory to the evil queen in Snow White, and the series draws explicit parallels: both women were accused of heinous crimes, neither was convicted, and both became cultural bogeymen.

Why This Matters: Revisiting History Through a Revisionist Lens

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story continues Ryan Murphy’s anthology strategy of re-examining notorious criminal cases through contemporary social frameworks. By casting Krieps in dual roles — one grounded in historical documentation (Sullivan was a real witness at Lizzie’s trial), the other in mythologized history (Báthory) — the series interrogates how female violence is narrated, remembered, and often distorted. The inclusion of Dr. Annouchka Bayley’s scholarly challenge to the Báthory legend underscores a broader editorial intent: to question whether history’s most “monstrous” women were perpetrators or convenient targets for patriarchal suppression. Bayley, a Cambridge associate professor, told the BBC in 2024 after years of research: “I mean, who has the time in one lifetime to, one by one, kill 650 young women? I mean she would have been a busy girl.” She further argued that Báthory — “the first female self-publisher that we have on record” — was likely silenced because her literacy and independence threatened power structures: “And that’s arguably why she needed not only to be shut up, but erased from the history books and, where not erased, turned into a bogeyman. Lock up your daughters — because Báthory is going to come and drain them of their blood to keep her looking young.” This revisionist perspective aligns with the series’ feminist framing and invites viewers to apply similar skepticism to the Lizzie Borden narrative.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What two characters does Vicky Krieps play in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story?

Krieps portrays Bridget ‘Maggie’ Sullivan, the Bordens’ housekeeper and a central figure in the main narrative, and Countess Elizabeth Báthory, the Hungarian “Blood Countess,” who appears in fantasy flashback sequences filmed in Italy.

When did Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story premiere on Netflix?

The fourth season of the Monster anthology premiered on Thursday, 19 September 2024.

Is the Countess Elizabeth Báthory storyline historically accurate?

The series dramatizes the legendary account of Báthory bathing in blood to preserve her youth. However, historian Dr. Annouchka Bayley has argued that Báthory may have been the victim of a politically motivated witch hunt, noting her status as an early female publisher and suggesting the 650-victim claim is logistically implausible. The show presents the legend as a story within the story, told by Maggie to Lizzie, rather than as established fact.

  • James Buckley Accidentally Leaks New ‘Inbetweeners’ Movie Details in Cameo Video

James Buckley Accidentally Leaks New ‘Inbetweeners’ Movie Details in Cameo Video

    Key Highlights

    • James Buckley appears to have teased his return as Jay Cartwright in a third The Inbetweeners movie via a Cameo video showing him wearing a “Cartwright Plant” hi-vis jacket.
    • Netflix has confirmed the third feature film, reuniting Buckley with co-stars Simon Bird, Joe Thomas, and Blake Harrison as the original quartet.
    • Fan speculation centers on Jay working for his father’s construction business, consistent with the character’s work experience storyline from the series.

Buckley’s Cameo Appearance Sparks Filming Speculation

James Buckley may have inadvertently revealed a significant detail about the forthcoming third The Inbetweeners movie during a personalized video recorded for the celebrity shout-out platform Cameo. The actor, who is set to reprise his role as the loud-mouthed compulsive liar Jay Cartwright, appeared in a video shared to TikTok by user @SindyStargfire with a dramatically altered appearance—clean-shaven and sporting blonde hair—a look that strongly suggests he is preparing to step back into character for production.

The project, confirmed by Netflix, will mark the third feature-length outing for the British comedy franchise. The original 2011 film followed the foursome’s misadventures on a lads’ holiday to Malia in Crete, while the 2014 sequel caught up with the characters at university or early in their careers, visiting Jay in Australia after he falsely claimed to be living in a mansion and working as a popular DJ. The new installment presumably picks up years later, with the four friends now adults—legally, at least, if not necessarily in maturity.

The “Cartwright Plant” Clue That Set Fans Talking

While Buckley’s physical transformation hinted at an imminent return to set, it was a wardrobe detail in the Cameo video that ignited the most fervent online detective work. Filmed against a grey background while congratulating a couple on the birth of twins, Buckley wore a blue polo shirt beneath a hi-vis jacket bearing a patch on the front reading “Cartwright Plant”—the surname of his character.

The apparent costume piece immediately triggered speculation across social media and forum platforms, particularly Reddit, where fans debated the implications for Jay’s off-screen trajectory. The consensus among many viewers was that the branding signaled Jay had followed a predictable, if unglamorous, career path into his father’s construction business.

Reddit Theories: From Construction Sites to Scummy Success

Discussion threads quickly filled with theories grounded in the show’s established lore. One fan wrote: “I mean, it was kind of obvious Jay would end up working for his dad. I mean, he spends all day jumping JCBs over cement mixers, making a grand a week.” Another agreed, adding: “Probably works for his dad. It’s known that his dad is at least a manager (if not owner) of a construction business, as that’s where Jay did his work experience.”

Not all predictions leaned toward mundane employment, however. A third fan offered a more characteristically cynical take on Jay’s potential evolution: “I think he’s successful and rich in his job, but scummy, and he’s still a great source of laughter through being pathetic.” The range of theories underscores the enduring appeal of a character whose bravado has always masked deep insecurity.

    Why This Matters

The Inbetweeners remains one of the UK’s most beloved sitcom exports, with its two theatrical releases grossing over £100 million combined at the global box office. A third film, backed by Netflix’s global distribution, represents a significant streaming investment in British comedy IP. The franchise’s humor—rooted in the excruciating gap between teenage posturing and reality—has aged into a cultural touchstone for millennial audiences. Confirmation of the original cast’s return, particularly after years of public hesitation from creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, suggests a carefully calibrated revival strategy. The “Cartwright Plant” detail, whether intentional Easter egg or accidental leak, demonstrates how modern fan communities dissect peripheral content for narrative clues, turning a birthday shout-out into a marketing event.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When will the third Inbetweeners movie be released?
No official release date has been announced. James Buckley’s Cameo appearance suggests filming may begin soon, but Netflix has not confirmed a production schedule or premiere window.
Is the “Cartwright Plant” jacket confirmed to be a costume from the movie?
Not officially. The patch appeared on Buckley’s hi-vis jacket during a Cameo video, leading to fan speculation. Neither Netflix nor the production team has verified whether the item is a film costume or a coincidence.
Will the original writers and directors return for the third film?
The RSS source does not confirm the involvement of creators Damon Beesley and Iain Morris. The article notes only that the four principal cast members—Buckley, Bird, Thomas, and Harrison—are set to reprise their roles.
  • Haunted Hotels Season 2 Trailer Teases Answer to Major Fan Question

Haunted Hotels Season 2 Trailer Teases Answer to Major Fan Question

    Key Highlights

    • Netflix renews animated horror-comedy Haunted Hotel for Season 2, premiering October 9 with eight new episodes.
    • The Season 2 trailer hints at resolving the mystery of the “attic ghost,” a silent background character spotted in Season 1 episodes “How to Train Your Demon” and “Ghost Hunters!”
    • Creator Matt Roller’s series continues blending family sitcom dynamics with deep-cut horror references, from The Shining to The Babadook.

Freeling Family Returns to the Undervale for a Second Haunting Season

Netflix has officially set an October 9 premiere date for the second season of Haunted Hotel, the spirited animated comedy that debuted to warm reviews for its blend of Bob’s Burgers-style family humor and loving horror parody. The streaming service released a new trailer this week confirming eight fresh episodes and teasing a potential answer to the show’s most persistent fan theory: the identity of the enigmatic “attic ghost” who has lingered silently in the background since Season 1.

Season One Established a Cult Horror Playground

Created by Matt Roller, Haunted Hotel centers on the Freeling family, who operate the Undervale, a ramshackle hotel populated by spirits, demons, and creepy creatures. The ensemble voice cast includes Natalie Palamides as young Esther, Skyler Gisondo as her 13-year-old brother Ben, Eliza Coupe as mother Katherine, Will Forte as the ghost of Uncle Nathan, and Jimmi Simpson as Abaddon, a mischievous demon trapped in the form of an 18th-century boy. Roller and his writing team stuffed the first season with allusions to genre touchstones such as The Shining, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, and The Babadook, rewarding horror literate viewers while keeping the sitcom engine humming.

    The Attic Ghost Mystery Deepens

Among the Undervale’s many spectral residents, one figure has resisted easy categorization. Fans have dubbed her the “attic ghost”: a young woman with a dark bob, a red jacket over a T-shirt bearing a yellow “Z,” and a knife protruding from her back. She has no dialogue but appears distinctly in the attic during the episode “How to Train Your Demon” and again among the auditioning spirits in “Ghost Hunters!” Unlike other background ghosts who clearly riff on icons like Freddy Krueger or Charles Manson, her specific design suggests a deliberate reference or narrative significance that has thus far gone unexplained.

    Trailer Teases a Narrative Payoff

The newly released Season 2 trailer appears to address the speculation directly. In the footage, Katherine announces that the family business has turned a corner and they will need to hire additional help. A mysterious new character then enters the frame, bearing a striking visual resemblance to the attic ghost. The edit strongly implies that the silent background extra may be stepping into a speaking role, perhaps as a new employee, a relative, or a figure from the hotel’s past. Whether she is the ghost’s sister, mother, daughter, or the ghost herself given corporeal form remains the central question heading into the October launch.

    Why This Matters

Haunted Hotel occupies a growing niche in adult animation: genre-savvy comedy that respects its source material as much as it satirizes it. By weaving a season-long mystery into what could have been a purely episodic workplace sitcom, Roller signals an ambition for serialized storytelling that could deepen the show’s cult appeal. The October 9 drop also positions the series as a seasonal tentpole for Netflix’s Halloween programming slate, a critical window for retention in the streaming wars. Resolving the attic ghost thread would reward the close-viewing community that drives online discourse and long-tail discovery for animated originals.

    Frequently Asked Questions

When does Haunted Hotel Season 2 premiere on Netflix?
Season 2 premieres globally on Netflix on October 9 with all eight episodes released at once.
Who is the “attic ghost” and will her identity be revealed?
The attic ghost is a silent background character with a distinct design (dark bob, red jacket, yellow “Z” shirt, knife in back) who appears in Season 1 episodes “How to Train Your Demon” and “Ghost Hunters!” The Season 2 trailer strongly suggests her identity or connection to the plot will be addressed when a visually similar character is introduced as a new hire at the Undervale.
Who are the main voice actors returning for Season 2?
The core cast includes Natalie Palamides (Esther), Skyler Gisondo (Ben), Eliza Coupe (Katherine), Will Forte (Nathan), and Jimmi Simpson (Abaddon). Creator Matt Roller also returns as showrunner.

Netflix Officially Removes Iconic 134-Episode Series From Streaming

Emmy Rossum has returned to the spotlight with a leading role in the new Hulu crime thriller Furious, but her breakout performance remains firmly rooted in the Showtime dramedy that defined a decade of television. Five years after its series finale, the American adaptation of Shameless is preparing to exit Netflix, closing a significant chapter for one of streaming’s most-watched library titles.

    The Gallagher Legacy on Showtime

Premiering on January 9, 2011, Shameless introduced audiences to the chaotic Gallagher clan of Chicago’s South Side. The series centers on Frank Gallagher (William H. Macy), a perpetually intoxicated patriarch who abandons his parental duties, leaving his eldest daughter Fiona (Rossum) to raise her five younger siblings. Second in command is Philip “Lip” Gallagher, played by Jeremy Allen White years before his award-winning turn in The Bear.

Over 11 seasons and 134 episodes, the show evolved into a cultural phenomenon. It balanced dark comedy with unflinching drama, portraying a family navigating poverty, addiction, teenage pregnancy, mental illness, and sexuality without sanitizing their morally complex survival tactics. The ensemble—including Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky, Steve Howey, and Shanola Hampton—allowed characters to age and change organically, a rarity in long-form sitcom-adjacent storytelling.

    Critical Acclaim and Streaming Longevity

The series earned 16 Primetime Emmy nominations and four wins during its run. Critics and audiences aligned in their praise, reflected in an 82% Tomatometer score and an 83% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. After its linear broadcast run, Shameless found a massive second life on Netflix, where it arrived in 2016 and remained a top-performing library title for nearly a decade.

Departure Date and the Streaming Void

According to What’s on Netflix, the licensing agreement for Shameless expires in October. All 11 seasons will be removed from the platform on October 11. Notably, the series is not currently available on Paramount+ with Showtime—the corporate streaming home of the Showtime brand—leaving U.S. viewers without a major subscription streaming option for the foreseeable future. Paramount has not yet announced whether the series will return to its platform, and its October content slate has not been published.

    Final Window to Binge

For newcomers and longtime fans alike, the next few weeks represent the last opportunity to stream the complete series on a major platform without additional cost. Given its reputation for character-driven storytelling and boundary-pushing subject matter, Shameless remains a high-reward binge-watch before its streaming future is resolved.

Peaky Blinders Sequel Series Advances with Netflix Season 2 Order

The Shelby family saga continues to expand. Steven Knight, creator and screenwriter of Peaky Blinders, has confirmed that the upcoming sequel series — tentatively titled Peaky Blinders: The New Generation — has completed its scripts and secured a Season 2 pre-order from Netflix.

    Scripts Complete, Production Advancing

Speaking on the Zoe Ball in the Afternoon podcast, Knight revealed the project is further along than many expected.

“Peaky [Blinders]: The New Generation, I guess you can call it, is already in the can,” he said. “It is so good. I mean, I would say that, wouldn’t I? But it is really, really good.”

The news follows the 2025 release of Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man, the feature-length film that debuted on Netflix to a 90% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s success reignited global interest in the franchise, which originally premiered on BBC Two in 2013 before becoming a worldwide phenomenon across six seasons.

    Honoring Sam Neill’s Legacy

As production moves forward, the cast and crew continue to mourn the loss of Sam Neill, who played a significant role in the series. The team has expressed a commitment to honor his contribution through the storytelling that defined the show’s reputation.

    From Skepticism to Global Phenomenon

Knight reflected on the franchise’s improbable journey, recalling early doubts during the BBC Two launch.

“When [Peaky Blinders] was first a BBC Two drama and people would go, ‘1920s Birmingham, with Birmingham accents and gangsters?’ said Knight. “Cillian [Murphy] was saying that he and Benjamin [Zephaniah] were shooting the first two or three days, and they got together and said, ‘What do you think? Is this gonna work?’ And they were like, ‘Nah, I don’t think so.’”

The turning point, Knight says, arrived in an unexpected form.

“But then, it just went bonkers. I really realized something was happening when Snoop Dogg’s agent was in touch, and said [Snoop] wants to meet you. We spent three hours in a hotel room talking about how Peaky reminded him of how he got involved in gang culture. And I just thought, ‘This is madness.’”

Snoop Dogg and the Expanding Universe

The Snoop Dogg encounter underscores the franchise’s cultural reach. While no casting has been announced, Knight acknowledged the rapper’s fandom and acting experience leave the door open for a future appearance — whether in the sequel series or a potential spinoff.

With scripts finalized and a two-season commitment from Netflix, Peaky Blinders: The New Generation represents the most concrete step yet in extending the Shelby universe beyond its original run.

Netflix Confirms Third Inbetweeners Movie as Cast Reunites for New Adventure

Nearly two decades after its Channel 4 debut, The Inbetweeners is set to return for a third feature film. Netflix has announced that the original quartet – Simon Bird (Will McKenzie), Joe Thomas (Simon Cooper), Blake Harrison (Neil Sutherland) and James Buckley (Jay Cartwright) – will reprise their roles for another installment. The sitcom, which aired for just 18 episodes across three seasons between 2008 and 2010, spawned two successful movies and remains a cultural touchstone, with Bird revealing he still hears “briefcase w***er” shouted at him in public.

During a late 2023 appearance on The Therapy Crouch podcast alongside his wife Clair Buckley, James Buckley disclosed that his favourite line from the entire series belongs to his on-screen father Terry, played by David Schaal. He recalled the moment verbatim:

“There’s a line from The Inbetweeners, this is one of my favourite lines and it is Jay talking to his dad.
“And his dad just goes, ‘Jay, women are like fairground rides, f**king mental.’
“That’s it, that’s all it is – that’s the pearls of wisdom.
“And I’m just like ‘oh thanks dad.’”

The line encapsulates the show’s blend of crude humour and unexpectedly poignant father-son dynamics that resonated with audiences.

Simon Bird’s Most Memorable Moment Was a Real-Life Health and Safety Nightmare

While Buckley cherishes a scripted gag, Simon Bird’s standout memory comes from behind the cameras during the first movie. Speaking to The National Youth Film in 2021, he described a stunt that went far beyond the script:

“There was a scene in the film, where Joe had to be airlifted out of the ocean by a helicopter. That was a big health and safety nightmare.
“Joe was really left alone out in the sea for quite a long time. It was actually being saved from drowning. Totally unnecessary for it to be Joe. Could have been a stuntman. Should have been a stuntman. And we’re all on sunloungers on the beach, watching this unfold.”

The incident underscores the often chaotic nature of the production and the camaraderie – however twisted – that defined the cast’s relationships.

Reddit Users Crown the Ultimate Inbetweeners Quote

With a new film on the horizon, fans have been revisiting the series’ most iconic moments. A 2022 Reddit thread asking What is your favourite ever line/scene from The Inbetweeners? drew hundreds of responses. Among the contenders were classic exchanges such as Neil and Jay’s Championship Manager boast:

Neil: How about this one? Jay: Championship manager? Completed it. Neil: But you can’t complete it. Jay: Err, I know. But I got so good at it they offered me in a role in the England set-up. Neil: Did they? Jay: I took Woking from the Conference to the Champions League in 6 seasons, that kind of stuff doesn’t go unnoticed.

Jay’s seafood aversion also earned votes:

Jay: I’m not eating that, it’s come out the f**king sea.

Other frequently mentioned catchphrases included Bus W**kers and ooo friend, while a darkly comic exchange between Tara and Will highlighted the show’s knack for awkward timing:

Tara: Her dad just died last month. Will: It’s not really relevant is it?

However, the clear winner by upvotes was a succinct, brutal put-down between Simon and Jay:

Simon: No-one brings a bag of s**t to a pub. Jay: Your dad does. Simon: Does he? Jay: Yeah. Your mum.

As the cast prepares to slip back into their trainers and ill-fitting jeans for a third cinematic outing, the enduring popularity of these lines proves that The Inbetweeners remains as quotable – and as painfully relatable – as ever.
