    Brayden Burries Is Auditioning for More Than Just His Future With the Bucks Next Season

    It is still early, but Brayden Burries is already showing signs of becoming a star for the Milwaukee Bucks. After an impressive Summer League performance, Milwaukee will want to give the rookie guard as many opportunities as possible to determine whether he can become a future face of the franchise.

    Burries’ development could also shape the Bucks’ roster decisions next summer, when three of their other guards could approach free agency.

    Bucks’ top three guards are nearing free agency

    Tyler Herro is scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, while Ryan Rollins and Kevin Porter Jr. have player options that are expected to be declined. All three guards will likely seek raises.

    In an ideal scenario, Milwaukee would keep all four players and build around a talented backcourt group. However, maintaining that quartet could be difficult from a financial standpoint.

    Burries’ performance may determine which direction the Bucks take. If he lives up to the hype and makes an immediate impact in the NBA, Milwaukee could become more willing to move on from one or two of Herro, Rollins or Porter to create a larger role for him.

    If Burries struggles and needs more time to develop, bringing the veterans back on new, more lucrative contracts could give him the opportunity to progress at his own pace.

    What a successful rookie season would look like for Brayden Burries

    For the Bucks to seriously consider making Burries a central part of their future while pushing one of their other three guards into the background, he would need to make a significant impact.

    Offensively, Burries would need to show the same creativity and confidence that made him one of the standout players in Summer League. He averaged 23.5 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 50 percent from the field.

    Those numbers will not translate directly to Milwaukee. Burries was a featured option in Summer League, whereas the Bucks already have other guards who command the ball. Still, he has the potential to display similar flashes as a versatile combo guard.

    If Burries shows the same confidence when given opportunities against NBA competition, he will quickly attract attention. He must prove that he can produce against NBA players rather than Summer League opponents, but his potential as a three-level scorer is clear. His polished passing could make him an even more dangerous offensive weapon.

    Defense will be just as important. Burries has the physical tools and basketball intelligence to become an outstanding defender at the NBA level, and he showed glimpses of that ability during Summer League.

    As with his offense, Burries must demonstrate that he can defend NBA players consistently. However, the early signs suggest he could reach that level quickly.

    Burries could influence the Bucks’ 2026 offseason

    If Burries becomes a standout two-way contributor during his rookie season, the Milwaukee Bucks could face extremely difficult decisions next summer. The team may ultimately prefer to invest fully in his development rather than pay Tyler Herro $40 million per year or give Porter and Rollins significant raises that could reduce Burries’ touches.

    Of course, it may be too early to have that conversation. But given how special Burries could become, it is never too soon for the Bucks to consider how his development might shape the team’s future.

    Bucks Reacts Survey: How Good Will Brayden Burries Become?

    Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of NBA fans. Throughout the year, we ask the most engaged Milwaukee Bucks fans and supporters across the country for their views on the team.

    More than three months ago, as part of our build-up to the 2026 NBA Draft, I examined the history of the 10th overall pick. The selection has produced generational players, busts and nearly everything in between, making it one of the NBA Draft’s most volatile slots—unless your name is “Paul,” in which case big things appear to be destined to follow. Just look at Paul Pierce, Paul George, Paul Westphal and Paul Silas.*

    The central argument was that the Bucks were at a crossroads and that this pick could either make or break the franchise’s future.

    *Paul Silas is listed as the 10th overall pick on the NBA’s official website but 12th in other locations because of the league’s territorial pick rule at the time, which allowed teams to select local college players in a bid to increase fan support.

    As you know, Milwaukee ultimately selected Brayden Burries with the 10th overall pick. It was, at the very least, a surprising choice. Burries was widely expected to be off the board by that point in the draft. NBADraft.net projected him to go ninth to the Dallas Mavericks, as did The Ringer, CBS and No Ceilings. We had him landing there, too.

    The Bucks also appeared to have a strong and relatively young backcourt already in place. Tyler Herro, Ryan Rollins and Kasparas Jakučionis all looked capable of fitting into Milwaukee’s long-term plans. Kevin Porter Jr. was also in the mix after picking up his player option just days after the draft.

    And yet, the Bucks still managed to land Burries.

    Brayden Burries’ impressive Summer League debut

    Burries has looked so good in a Bucks uniform that it is surprising Jon Horst has not been arrested for grand larceny. His Summer League performance—23.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game, along with First Team honours—was almost undersold by his nonchalant approach. He played as if he had already been there before.

    It took time for the significance of his performance to sink in. In retrospect, we may not have talked about Burries nearly enough.

    That brings us to this week’s poll. Could Burries’ composure, combined with our apparent indifference to just how well he played, point to something bigger? Is it all foreshadowing? Could we somehow be witnessing the early stages of the next great Buck—one so good that his Summer League performance will barely register as a footnote in the story of his career?

    Destiny, fate and all that.

    So, Brew Hoopers, we are putting the question to you so we can preserve our prediction in ink—or at least darker pixels on lighter pixels—as proof of our prescience: just how good will Brayden Burries become?
