King Charles Draws Line With Harry and Meghan as Private Citizens, Expert Says

King Charles III has drawn a firm “line in the sand” with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle after Buckingham Palace circulated a letter spelling out the couple’s non-working royal status. The move comes after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told People magazine they were “surprised” by the timing of the clarification.

Palace Letter Reiterates Non-Working Royal Status

On September 7, a senior palace official reiterated that Harry and Meghan are non-working royals, according to People magazine. The letter, issued on behalf of the king by Lord Chamberlain Richard Benyon, was shared with the Sussexes. A spokesperson for the couple said they were “a little surprised not to have been told about this in advance,” the BBC reported.

Sources close to the couple told People they received the letter and, 20 minutes later, sent back questions. However, they were informed the letter had already been circulated to the media.

The document pointed out that the couple are “private citizens” and their His and Her Royal Highness styles remain in abeyance and are not used.

Royal Commentators Weigh In on King’s Decision

British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital the guidance made one thing clear: they “do not represent the Crown.”

“King Charles’ narrative is decisive as he draws a line in the sand — nothing new here, no more discussion required,” Chard told Fox News Digital. “I’m sure the Sussexes expected flexibility. Prince Harry may be the king’s son, but he lacks power to amend and dictate the monarch’s statement.“

“There is no ambiguity about who is in and who is out,” she said. “The king is protecting the institution. The public has made it clear they do not want the monarchy to be undermined or damaged by confusion. The letter’s statement puts minds at rest.“

“In part, yes, the monarchy can only have one voice,” Chard shared. “Prince William and Princess Catherine are the future king and queen. They officially speak for the crown alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla. It’s constitutional, and the crown takes precedence.“

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said there’s another, more silent message the king wants to convey.

“The letter states the palace’s position, but it’s clearly intended as a put-down after the way the royals were blindsided by the Sussexes returning to Britain,” he claimed.

“The Sussexes see themselves as public figures, not private citizens,” he said. “So, they are ‘surprised,’ but are unlikely to alter their plans. The king was never going to debate anything with the Sussexes. The royals don’t debate, although Queen Elizabeth’s ‘recollections may vary’ is legendary.“

Full Text of the Palace Letter

The letter, as quoted by People, reads:

“It is well known that in January 2020 the Duke and Duchess stepped down from undertaking representative duties on behalf of The Sovereign, and are no longer working Members of The Royal Family,” stated the letter, as quoted by People. “This position, distinct from the State and Royal duties undertaken by the working Royal Family, and with the personal latitude it brings the couple in respect of financial independence and protection of their privacy as they would wish, will continue to be fully respected.“

“It follows that there is no change to the current status of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex,” it continued. “Their styles as His and Her Royal Highness remain in abeyance and are not used. The charitable work of the Duke and Duchess is a personal matter for them both and undertaken in their private capacity. In short, their position is akin to private citizens with commercial and charitable interests.“

Chard Calls Letter a “Reality Check”

“It shouldn’t have been a shock,” she said. “The update was inevitable and warranted. Harry and Meghan unexpectedly swanned back to the U.K. and seemingly hoped to continue as if they were still working royals. The blurred lines created an air of confusion, with the majority wondering if Harry was back in the fold of the institution. The petty comment batted back from Team Sussex highlighted bruised egos.“

“Allegedly the Sussexes were caught off guard. The irony when you consider Harry’s book ‘Spare,’ their Netflix documentaries and the Oprah interview catching the British royal family off guard over the years.“

    Uganda Withdraws from Invictus Games

The fallout extended beyond the palace. On September 9, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, son of Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and head of the country’s armed forces, announced Uganda’s withdrawal from the Invictus Games.

“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games,” he wrote on X. “We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.“

“I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.“

A source close to Harry told People:

“They made it very clear that the reason they pulled out was a direct result of perceived guidance from the Lord Chamberlain. This was an unintended or intended consequence of the letter — and that was always going to happen. Hence the wish not to rush it out.“

“The only people suffering as a result are the competitors from Uganda who would have been taking part in next year’s Invictus Games,” the insider added.

    Experts Divided on Impact

British royal expert Hilary Fordwich criticized the Sussexes’ response.

“Harry blaming this letter for Uganda pulling out of the Invictus Games is a ghastly move on his part,” she said. “No doubt Harry and Meghan thought King Charles would accommodate their return or at least consult with them. But their expectations weren’t relevant for the royals.“

Royal broadcaster Ian Pelham Turner told Fox News Digital he believes the letter has caused more harm than good in any peace talks.

“My personal opinion on the decision by King Charles to make public a letter conceived by the Lord Chamberlain to reiterate that Harry and Meghan were not working royals was an act of malicious intent initiated by those intending to disrupt their return,” he explained.

“The message was unjustified,” said Turner. “I hope Harry and Meghan will not rise to the bait and retaliate but calmly move on.“

    Palace Insiders: No New Policy

People reported that the king remains supportive of organizations and initiatives like the Invictus Games that help wounded service personnel. Palace insiders pointed out the letter does not represent a new policy but reiterates terms agreed to at the 2020 “Sandringham Summit” led by the late Queen Elizabeth II, shortly before Harry and Meghan stepped back as senior working royals and moved to California.

Royal author Robert Jobson previously told The Daily Mail:

“Perhaps predictably, there was an immediate response from the couple,” he told the outlet. “But don’t expect to see anything similar coming from the palace. The king has no intention of being drawn into responding further.“

While the Sussexes have returned to the U.K. for an extended stay, they will not resume their roles as working royals. They plan to live in a private, non-royal residence outside London while maintaining their California home and a property in Portugal.

Uganda Withdraws from Invictus Games Amid Royal Tensions

Prince Harry’s flagship Invictus Games, scheduled for Birmingham next year, has suffered a significant setback after Uganda announced its withdrawal. The decision appears linked to the escalating public dispute between Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which intensified following a formal letter from King Charles III.

    Royal Dispute Escalates Publicly

The controversy erupted on Monday when King Charles issued a letter describing Harry and Meghan as “private citizens” and reaffirming they were not permitted to use their royal HRH titles. The Duke and Duchess, who are reportedly moving back to the UK after years in the US, responded by stating they were “surprised” and sought to portray themselves as “public figures” while questioning the rationale behind the letter’s release.

Uganda Cites Lack of Royal Approval

With Commonwealth nations observing the fallout, Uganda’s General Muhoozi Kainerugaba — son of the Ugandan president — declared on Wednesday that his country would not participate in the Games without the express permission of King Charles. The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry in 2014 to support wounded servicemen and women.

A Sussex insider speaking with ITV connected the withdrawal directly to Monday’s letter:

“Intended or unintended, this is clearly a consequence of the Lord Chamberlain’s guidance regarding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex that was rushed out without consultation on Monday.”

“Sadly, the only people who will suffer are the Invictus Games competitors.”

    General Kainerugaba’s Strong Stance

General Kainerugaba, who has been outspoken on the Sussexes, told The Times:

“I have factions in the Ministry of Defence that support that Harry-Meghan nonsense. I had to quash it straight away. I support the monarch. Period.”

In a subsequent post on X (formerly Twitter), he elaborated:

“In order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III of the United Kingdom, whom we deeply revere, Uganda hereby withdraws from the Invictus Games.”

“We shall not participate in anything that does not have His Majesty’s approval.”

The Uganda High Commission has been contacted for further comment.

Prince Harry Has ‘No Way Back’ to Family Even If Marriage ‘Goes Pear-Shaped,’ Ex-Palace Insider Claims

A royal biographer has ruled out any possibility of Prince Harry returning to working royal duties, even if his marriage to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, were to end. The assessment comes as fallout continues from King Charles III’s formal letter confirming the Sussexes’ permanent status as non-working members of the royal family.

No Path Back for Prince Harry, Says Former Palace Aide

Speaking to the Daily Express, royal expert and former Palace aide Dickie Arbiter dismissed speculation that a marital breakdown could open a route for the Duke of Sussex to resume official duties. Arbiter stated the King’s Monday letter makes clear that the 2020 “half-in-half-out” arrangement remains in force.

“There’s no way back for him as a working royal,” said Dickie. “Even if the marriage goes pear-shaped and they separate, he won’t be a working royal again.”

Arbiter identified the couple’s media strategy as their most damaging decision. He criticized their engagement with American television and the reception it received across the Atlantic.

“The worst is how they’ve sold themselves to the media, to television in particular, American television, and how the Americans bought into it.”

“The Americans, they’re quite gullible actually. I’m sorry to say.”

King Charles Confirms Permanent Non-Working Status

The monarch’s letter addresses several ongoing disputes. It confirms Harry and Meghan will be regarded as private citizens “with commercial and charitable interests” and are not to use “HRH” titles in any official capacity. Security inquiries are to be directed to Buckingham Palace.

The Duke of Sussex remains embroiled in a legal battle with the Home Office over taxpayer-funded security during UK visits. He is also pursuing privacy claims against Daily Mail publishers and other news organizations alongside other high-profile figures. Controversy has persisted over the couple’s use of royal titles despite their agreement to cease using them in an official capacity.

    New Book Offers Further Insight

Arbiter’s comments coincide with the release of his book, On Duty with the Royals, officially published Thursday, 10 September 2026. The publication arrives as the royal household continues to navigate the long-term implications of the Sussexes’ departure from official duties.

King Charles and Prince Harry ‘dragging’ public in family feud with letter weeks after UK move

King Charles III has issued a formal letter confirming that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex remain barred from using their royal highness titles, according to a statement from the Lord Chamberlain’s office provided to the BBC.

Titles remain suspended following 2020 agreement

The clarification reinforces the terms established when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back as senior working royals in early 2020. Under that agreement, the couple retained their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles but agreed to no longer use the style “His and Her Royal Highness” in any official capacity.

The Lord Chamberlain, the most senior official in the Royal Household, confirmed to the BBC that the King’s correspondence makes clear this restriction remains in effect. The palace has not released the full text of the letter, but the briefing underscores that the 2020 arrangement has not been altered.

    Context of the royal transition

When the Sussexes announced their intention to “step back” from royal duties, Buckingham Palace stated that while they would continue to be known as His Royal Highness The Duke of Sussex and Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Sussex, they would not actively use the HRH prefix. The decision was framed as a practical measure reflecting their new non-working royal status.

Since relocating to California, the couple has pursued commercial ventures, media production deals, and philanthropic work through their Archewell Foundation. They have consistently used “Duke and Duchess of Sussex” in professional contexts, in line with the palace agreement.

    No change to constitutional position

Royal sources emphasize that the letter does not signal a shift in the family’s approach. The titles of Prince and Princess, along with the dukedom, were bestowed by the late Queen Elizabeth II and remain intact. The restriction applies solely to the active use of the HRH style, which is traditionally reserved for working members of the Royal Family undertaking official duties on behalf of the monarch.

The Lord Chamberlain’s office, which coordinates ceremonial and administrative functions of the Royal Household, rarely comments publicly on private correspondence. Its decision to brief the BBC suggests a desire to eliminate ambiguity amid ongoing public and media speculation about the couple’s standing within the institution.

Theo James Responds Bluntly to Meghan Markle’s Potential ‘The Gentlemen’ Role

Speculation surrounding Meghan Markle potentially joining the cast of Netflix’s The Gentlemen for a third season has been firmly dismissed by the show’s leading star, Theo James. The rumors surfaced in late August, shortly before the second season of the Guy Ritchie series premiered, but the actor has characterized the chatter as unfounded.

Theo James Addresses Casting Rumors with Humor and Clarity

When pressed on the possibility of an ex-royal joining the ensemble, James initially responded with a tongue-in-cheek remark. “Yes, Fergie is joining,” he told Town&Country. “She’ll be playing my love interest.”

Adopting a more serious tone, James subsequently shut down the speculation entirely. “No, I think that was mainly a lot of hot air,” he continued. “At the moment, we’re just trying to get as many eyes on season two, and then season three will happen soon.”

Regarding the narrative direction, he noted the broader vision is established, though specific details remain fluid. “But in terms of story, we have the overarching ambition of where we’re going to go. We’re going to expand the world, go to different countries. But in terms of the minutiae.” He concluded, “I mean, it’s still very much up in the air.”

Origin and Escalation of the Meghan Markle Speculation

The rumors coincided with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s return to the UK from California. Markle, known for her starring role in Suits, was reportedly in talks for the series. The conjecture gained traction when Manda Levin, Netflix’s Director of Scripted Series in the UK, responded to the speculation by stating, “All bets are off.”

However, the narrative shifted rapidly. Within days, reports emerged claiming Netflix had withdrawn the offer due to significant public backlash in the UK. Tina Brown, former editor-in-chief of Vanity Fair and The New Yorker, wrote in a Substack column: “I learned this morning that the casting of Meghan Markle in season 3 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen has been withdrawn.” She added, “The backlash in the UK was so intense, it became untenable to go forward. This does not bode well for Meghan’s acting comeback in the UK.”

Cast Members Unanimously Dismiss the Reports

Multiple members of The Gentlemen cast have fielded questions on the topic, uniformly rejecting the validity of the casting rumors. James repeated his royal jest in a separate interview with Extra TV, swapping Sarah Ferguson for Prince Harry. “No. Prince Harry is playing one of my love interests,” he told Extra TV. “So that’s the Meghan Markle thing.”

Speaking to PA, James elaborated on the impracticality of such a casting choice. “I think it’s spurious rumours,” he said. “I think she’d fit in well because she’s actually from part of the royal family. But no, I think the practicalities of that are impossible.”

Co-Stars Label Rumors a Marketing Ploy

New season two addition Hugh Bonneville suggested the speculation served as a brilliant promotional tactic. “I think it’s a genius piece of marketing by whoever just dreamt up that idea.”

Veteran actor Ray Winstone injected humor regarding his own future on the show, stating, “I don’t even know if I’m doing [the third season].” Vinnie Jones, who portrays Geoff Seacombe, echoed James’s sentiment, branding the rumors “hot air.”

    Season Two Introduces Maya Jama

While the Markle rumors dominate headlines, the second season has introduced a confirmed new face: presenter Maya Jama. Her acting debut in the series has reportedly divided audience opinion, providing a tangible talking point amid the fictional casting chatter.

Meghan Markle Again Exposed for “extremely rude” Behavior in Professional Setting

Reports about Meghan Markle’s treatment of household staff have resurfaced, with Page Six describing her alleged behavior during interviews for domestic positions in the United Kingdom as “extremely rude.”

    Report alleges unusual interview process

According to sources cited by Page Six, applicants interviewing for housekeeping or maid positions were allegedly instructed not to speak to Markle or make eye contact with her. They reportedly handed over their résumés and then stood to one side of the room while Markle reviewed the documents.

The sources claimed that Markle did not ask the applicants questions or engage them in a conversation. Instead, she allegedly took time to read each résumé, looked the applicant up and down, and then told the person they could leave.

Could reports affect future household staffing?

Sarah Jones of Page Six suggested that the accounts could make household staff less willing to interview for positions with Markle and Prince Harry, particularly now that the couple are reportedly spending more time in the United Kingdom.

The latest report adds to previous claims from people who have worked closely with Markle during her business ventures. However, the allegations come from unnamed sources and have not been independently verified.
