Lionel Messi Retires: How the Argentina Legend’s Decade of Dominance Almost Never Happened

Edgardo Bauza became Argentina manager in August 2016, replacing Gerardo Martino after the country’s Copa America disappointment. He remained in charge for only eight months, but his earliest days may have had the greatest impact.

Bauza’s first major decision was to travel to Barcelona and convince Lionel Messi to reverse his decision to retire from international football. The widespread demand for Messi’s return ultimately proved impossible to ignore.

“I love this country and this shirt too much,” Messi said as he returned to the international fold.

“I’m grateful to all the people who wanted me to continue playing with Argentina. Hopefully we can give them something to cheer about soon.”

Messi’s long wait for international glory

Success did not arrive immediately. Argentina lost to France in the last 16 of the 2018 World Cup, prompting many observers to dismiss Messi’s chances of ever lifting the trophy.

Remarkably, Messi did not win a senior international tournament until he was 34. He then won four major honours in barely three years, including the 2022 Finalissima.

Questions about his international future followed each of those victories, but Messi continued through to his sixth World Cup in 2026. He scored eight goals and provided four assists as Argentina reached the final, where they were defeated by Spain.

Although he appeared to lack the pace of his earlier years, Messi moved through matches with ease and remained every bit as effective.

    Messi’s possible Argentina farewell

The final was played at the same stadium where Messi had “retired” a decade earlier.

“When Messi retired [10 years ago] it reminded us all how much we loved him,” said Argentina fan Benjamin who was in the Metlife for the 2016 showpiece final.

“When I heard him retire, I cried, the country cried. He did get criticism but only because everyone cared so much. Without Lionel Messi, Argentina would still be waiting for their next World Cup since 1986.”

Messi’s future in international football became uncertain again after the death of his father, Jorge, just three weeks after this year’s World Cup final.

The decision now appears final and, at 39, another return to international football seems unlikely. However, South American football writer Tim Vickery believes Argentina could still arrange an official farewell for the legendary forward.

“Remember that, as a result of their behaviour at the World Cup, the next game Argentina play on home soil will only be in front of a crowd at 50% capacity,” Vickery told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“But once those punishments are out of the way, I’m sure it will be in the mind of the Argentina FA: ‘Why don’t we hold a game back in Buenos Aires? River Plate, they have the biggest capacity in South America. Why don’t we do an official farewell there? What do you think about it, Lionel? One last time?’.”

I am going to miss hearing you from the inside very much. Now I will be one more among you, always cheering and standing behind the team from the outside (in good times and bad, even more so).Thank you to my family for always being there, for accompanying me on this beautiful but difficult journey. Thank you to every coach, teammate, and official I had the chance to share this with. I take with me unforgettable memories and moments lived.I leave with the peace and pride of having given you, together with my teammates, dreamlike moments. It was crazy to have lived it with you. I love you!Thank you God for making me Argentine.Come on Argentina!*I wrote these words on July 21, two days after the final. Lionel Messi Announces Retirement from Argentina’s National Team

Lionel Messi announced Monday that he is retiring from international soccer and stepping down from Argentina’s national team at age 39.

In an Instagram post featuring a handwritten notebook entry in Spanish, Messi confirmed his decision. A footnote at the end of the post read: “*I wrote these words on July 21st, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.”

Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, died Aug. 8 at a hospital in Rosario, a city in central Argentina. He was 68.

Messi played in six World Cups, won the tournament with Argentina in Qatar in 2022 and led the country to the 2026 final, where Argentina lost to Spain.

    Messi’s retirement announcement

“After the time that has passed since the final, and after giving it a lot of thought, I want to let everyone know that I am retiring from the Argentina national team…”

It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deep down — but I understand that the time has come. I swear to you that I always gave it my all — not just in these last few years when we won everything, but before that too; I always fought and left everything on the field for this jersey, to bring you joy and make you feel proud to be Argentine through football.

“Time is running short, chapters come to a close, and this is one that hurts me deeply. I love, have loved, and will always love being part of the national team. I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give, and besides, there are some great young players coming up who deserve to be here.”

“Thank you for all the affection over these past 20 years. I will miss hearing you from the pitch so much. Now I’ll be just one of you, cheering and supporting from the outside (through the good times and the bad — especially the bad).”

“Thank you to my family for always being there, for accompanying me on this journey — so beautiful, yet so difficult. Thank you to every coach, teammate, and official I’ve shared this path with. I take with me unforgettable memories and moments.”

“I leave with the peace of mind and pride of having given you — alongside my teammates — moments we once only dreamed of. It was an incredible experience to live this with you all. I love you!”

“Thank you, God, for making me Argentine.”

    “Let’s go, Argentina!”

“*I wrote these words on July 21st, two days after the final. Today, after what happened with my dad, I am even more convinced than before.”

    Messi’s Argentina record

Messi is one of Argentina’s greatest soccer heroes, alongside Diego Maradona. The Argentina captain is the country’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 124 goals in 203 appearances for the national team.

He is also the highest-scoring man in South American soccer history.

When Messi led Argentina to the 2022 World Cup title, it was the country’s first championship in 36 years and its third overall.

Before that triumph, Messi played a key role in ending Argentina’s 28-year trophy drought. He helped the team win the 2021 Copa América and then claim the tournament again in 2024.

Messi had previously announced his international retirement in 2016 after captaining Argentina in three consecutive finals without winning any of them. He reversed that decision soon afterward and went on to lead the country to its World Cup victory.
