    Furious Finale: Emmy Rossum Explains Why Alice Kills Jay Easton and Reveals Season 2 Plans

    Spoiler alert: This story contains spoilers from “Hart Island,” the Season 1 finale of “Furious,” now streaming on Hulu.

    “Furious” ends with Alice, played by Emmy Rossum, wearing her most openly satisfied smile of the season. The expression is the final image that Rossum and series creator Elizabeth Meriwether leave viewers with—at least for now. Hulu announced last week that “Furious” has been renewed for Season 2.

    Alice’s smile answers a question from Catherine (Lola Petticrew), the serial killer and target Alice has pursued all season in her role as an FBI agent. Earlier in the series, Catherine encouraged Alice to embrace the feeling of killing men who prey on women and girls. Now imprisoned and realizing that Alice killed the Jeffrey Epstein-coded predator Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie), Catherine repeatedly asks, “I said, did you like the way it felt?”

    What happens in the “Furious” Season 1 finale?

    Most of the Season 1 finale unfolds at the Easton estate in Connecticut, after Alice effectively sends Catherine there at the end of the previous episode. Emma Easton (Hope Davis) puts her father, Jay, to bed as he complains about his situation, then works with FBI Special Agent Ed George (Danny McCarthy) to destroy the evidence against them.

    Catherine, determined to discover who killed her friend Isabel (Larissa Campos), secretly enters the greenhouse to confront Emma. Emma shoots her, but Catherine begins recovering key memories despite her injuries. When Alice arrives, Catherine tells her, “You wanted me to come here because you wanted me to kill him,” and Alice responds, “We don’t get to decide what someone’s punishment will be.”

    Catherine’s response appears to change Alice’s view. She describes the power she felt while killing the men who served Jay Easton, saying, “When I’m killing him, it’s like I’m eating him,” as Alice listens intently from the other side of the wall. Catherine continues, “Like, I’m swallowing him, like everything he’s ever done is disappearing inside me, and I have all the fucking power in the world, and they don’t want us to have that. They wanna take that from us. But I want you to feel it.”

    With a handgun, Catherine goes upstairs to Jay’s secret room and finds Emma inside. Alice stops Catherine before she can shoot. Catherine’s memories then return in full: She remembers that she killed Isabel by injecting her with drugs, the same method she used with her more recent victims.

    In Isabel’s case, however, Catherine was accelerating an inevitable death. After a horrific night with Easton and his friends, Isabel was in extreme pain and had started bleeding heavily because of a complication from recently giving birth. “She asked me to,” a devastated Catherine tells Alice through tears as Alice handcuffs her and the two hold hands.

    Outside, Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) exposes Ed’s years-long collaboration with Jay. Ed shouts, “It was one dead girl! And she would have died anyway.”

Series creator Elizabeth Meriwether and stars Emmy Rossum and Lola Petticrew broke down the ending’s biggest twists in an interview with Mashable, confirming that the vengeance-driven narrative is far from over.

    Who Killed Isabel in Furious?

    The central mystery of Catherine’s (Lola Petticrew) fragmented memories finally resolves in the finale. After a season-long quest to uncover the truth behind the night Isabel died, Catherine returns to the mansion of Jay Easton (Peter McRobbie). There, she pieces together the horrifying reality: she administered a lethal intravenous dose to Isabel, her first love, in a desperate act of mercy. Isabel was suffering from severe injuries—likely postpartum complications compounded by a brutal beating from Jay—and begged Catherine to end her pain.

    Petticrew explained that a subtle costume detail foreshadowed this truth from the very first episode. Catherine’s sequined purse, which leaves a trace at a crime scene, served as a constant emotional tether to Isabel.

    “I think that it is,” noting of the bag, “What I treated it like was an anchor and a reminder at every step of the way that this is what she was doing it for, and who she was doing it for. You know, Isabel, she’s the love of her life. And I think that that physical girlish reminder  — even when she’s sort of dressed up and and and being seen by men or the world as like sexy — there’s always this sort of thing that sits upon her that reminds you that she was a child when all of this happened, and a child that was forced into this situation.”

    The purse symbolized Catherine’s stolen childhood and the singular motivation behind her killing spree: avenging the girl she loved.

    Who Killed Jay in Furious?

    While Jay’s death initially appears to be from natural causes—a sudden respiratory failure in his bedroom—the finale’s closing moments reveal a calculated murder. A new camera angle shows FBI Agent Alice Black (Emmy Rossum) deliberately stamping on Jay’s ventilator tube, suffocating him in a manner undetectable to investigators.

    This act is rooted in Alice’s own buried trauma. Earlier in the episode, Jay recognizes Alice not as a federal agent, but as the child star of a pornographic video produced during her youth. Rossum detailed how this secret history drives Alice’s obsession with the FBI’s secure evidence viewing room.

    “Alice has a lot of secrets…We don’t know why she wants to get into the room. We don’t know that she knows about the videotape. That is information she would have hidden when she was being interviewed by the FBI. They would ask you a question like, ‘Does anybody have anything on you that could be used against you?’ She certainly didn’t disclose her history or what had happened to her as a young teenager. She doesn’t say why — you know, Nora (Quincy Tyler Bernstine) says to her in the first episode, ‘Why do you want to work in the squad?’ She doesn’t give the full answer.”

    “Alice just kind of smiles and doesn’t say anything. And we see her looking at that door. We know she wants to get in that room, right? To see how many people have seen that tape. Is that tape out there? Does it exist? Can they find me? Have people looked at me and my body in that way? So there’s a lot riding on Alice being found out. And she has even more secrets at the end of Season 1 than she did at the beginning.”

    By killing Jay, Alice eliminates the only living witness who could expose her past, while simultaneously stepping deeper into the moral abyss she polices.

    Where Could Furious Season 2 Go?

    The final scene finds Alice inside the high-security evidence room, searching for her own name. Instead of the video, she discovers staggering metadata: the tape has been entered as evidence in 312 cases and downloaded over 50,000 times. As she scrolls through usernames, Catherine’s voice echoes from prison: “Did you like the way it felt?” Alice’s smile suggests a terrifying new mission: hunting the vast network of consumers and perpetrators the data represents.

    Meriwether, a self-described Law & Order: SVU devotee, envisions the show maintaining its single-case-per-season structure while deepening the partnership between Alice and her supervisor, Nora.

    “Fingers crossed, but I’m hoping we get to do more.”

    She emphasized that Alice’s expanding web of secrets—including the murder of Jay and her undisclosed history—will complicate her professional life and fuel future conflict.

    When Is Furious Season 2 Coming?

    Hulu officially renewed Furious for a second season on August 27, days before the Season 1 finale premiered. All episodes of Season 1 are currently streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
