Kimi Antonelli: I Was “driving like my grandmother” in Baku F1 Race

    Key Highlights

    • Andrea Kimi Antonelli recovered from 16th on the grid to finish fifth at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku.
    • Damage from contact with Oliver Bearman left Antonelli with a heavily compromised floor after the restart.
    • Antonelli limited his points deficit to Mercedes teammate George Russell and retains a 66-point lead in the standings ahead of Malaysia.

Antonelli salvages fifth in cautious Baku recovery

Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix recovery was a measured damage-limitation drive rather than a repeat of his spectacular Monza victory. After hitting the wall during qualifying, the Mercedes driver started 16th on the grid, giving him a second comeback race in three weekends.

The 6km Baku City Circuit offered more overtaking opportunities than Formula 1’s previous race in Madrid, but its narrow, windy street layout remained filled with risks. Antonelli adopted a cautious strategy, gradually passing midfield rivals to reach eighth by lap 31 of 51, when Alex Albon triggered a safety car.

The neutralisation closed up the field and gave Antonelli’s recovery another boost. He had already benefited from Lando Norris’ incident at Turn 1, before Franco Colapinto’s crash involving Norris and Pierre Gasly created further opportunities. Antonelli avoided the incident and moved into contention for a higher finish, eventually crossing the line fifth after challenging Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton.

Mercedes driver explains “damage save mode” approach

Antonelli said his conservative approach was shaped by a lack of the pace he had shown at Monza and in earlier races. He also acknowledged that overtaking became particularly difficult when several cars were using their overtaking systems in a train, while mistakes around him made caution the more effective option.

“I was driving a bit like my grandmother today, just damage save mode,” Antonelli explained. “You know, I just didn’t take a risk. Before making a move, I was making sure that I could go for it.”

Although Antonelli avoided the main incident at the restart, Haas driver Oliver Bearman made contact with him. The collision damaged the left-hand side edge of the Mercedes floor, making the car significantly more difficult to control during the closing stages.

“After the restart, I had big floor damage,” Antonelli detailed. “My whole left side was gone with the contact. So after that, the car was very sketchy to drive. I still tried to get to fourth, but all in all, it’s one of those days where you have to be happy with fifth.

“I saw the Alpine locking up and I pulled back immediately. I was getting ready to do the switchback, but then obviously I didn’t see Ollie coming so quickly on the inside. I was lucky to get away with it, but not so lucky to come away with such a big [amount of] damage.”

Antonelli admits Baku pace was below Monza level

The weekend had already been disrupted by a hydraulic leak during practice and Antonelli’s qualifying crash. Those setbacks affected his rhythm and left him unwilling to commit to the same all-out style that produced his sensational comeback win at Monza.

“If I had the same pace as at Monza or in previous races, it would have been different,” he explained. “It would have been just full attack. But today I realised very early that, first of all, it was a lot harder to overtake with a train of cars all in overtake mode. And then I didn’t have the same pace as I had previously.

“The mindset changed very quickly. And also seeing so many people making mistakes, you kind of pull back a little bit. Because today I just took advantage of everyone else’s mistakes and just moved forward.”

Antonelli’s fifth-place finish limited his points loss to race-winning Mercedes teammate George Russell to 15 points. He leaves Baku with a 66-point lead in the standings as Formula 1 moves on to Malaysia.

    Why This Matters

Antonelli’s result highlights the value of completing a difficult street-circuit race without compounding a troubled weekend. After the hydraulic issue, qualifying crash and floor damage caused by Bearman, the Mercedes driver preserved a strong championship position despite lacking his usual pace. His Baku performance also shows how safety cars, rival mistakes and disciplined risk management can influence the outcome of a recovery drive.
