Silo Season 3, episode 9 delivers a major twist, revealing what may have caused the apocalypse and raising new questions about the founders, The Pact, and the futures of Daniel and Helen.
What happens at the end of Silo Season 3, episode 9?
Episode 9 follows several major developments, including Bernard (Tim Robbins) being sent outside to die and Camille (Alexandria Riley) beginning to question the mysterious algorithm. However, the episode’s final act changes everything.
The story shifts from the chaos inside the silo to the flashback storyline, which has now moved forward several years. Daniel (Ashley Zukerman) and Helen (Jessica Henwick) are expecting a baby and visiting the completed silo system that Per Stensen (Colin Hanks) and Senator Thurman (Laura Innes) have spent the past three years developing.
By this point, the silos are operational, and people have been living inside them for a year as part of the experiment. Daniel and Helen are visiting ahead of the system’s public unveiling, but the atmosphere is noticeably tense. The founders appear to know more than they are revealing.
Helen is taken to Silo 18 — the same silo seen in the present-day storyline — while Daniel is brought to Silo 1 by Henry (Reed Birney) and Dr. Victor Crnkovich (Matt Craven). There, he meets Senator Thurman and Per Stensen, who are rehearsing their speeches.
Daniel’s sister, Charlotte (Jessica Brown Findlay), is missing. When Daniel sends her their family in-joke, “If mom and dad were alive right now…,” she replies with the wrong response.
Daniel senses that something is wrong and calls Helen. She is walking up the ramp of Silo 18 in an attempt to get a phone signal. Henry follows Daniel and tells him to return, but Daniel ignores him and climbs to the top of the silo’s berm.
“I got a text from Charlotte, but I don’t think she wrote it,” he tells Helen through the crackling phone connection.
Helen eventually reaches the top of Silo 18’s berm, and the pair spot each other in the distance. In the middle of their conversation, the world suddenly turns white-red. A ringing sound fills the air. As the light fades, they see a mushroom cloud rising on the horizon.
Daniel tries to reach Helen, but Henry and another guard wrestle him back toward Silo 1. A robotic voice repeatedly instructs them to seek shelter in the nearest silo.
The episode ends without confirming whether Daniel or Helen survives.
Did Silo Season 3 just show the end of the world?
At least one thing appears clear: the mushroom cloud resembles the aftermath of a nuclear missile strike. The explosion is presumably the event that triggers the global apocalypse and transforms the planet into the wasteland that Juliette (Rebecca Ferguson) and the other residents see outside in the present day.
The development is significant because it is not what episode 8 seemed to set up. In that episode, Per Stensen appeared convinced that nanotechnology posed humanity’s greatest threat. It now seems that he was wrong.
Who caused the nuclear explosion?
That remains the biggest unanswered question. In episode 8, Stensen says that Iran and the United States are at war over Iran’s development of nanoweapons, which could initially suggest that Iran is responsible for the blast.
However, the behavior of the founders and those closest to them suggests that several people may have known an attack was imminent. Anna (Morven Christie), who is Senator Thurman’s daughter and Stensen’s partner, appears distant throughout the episode. She insists that they must reach the silos early and reacts awkwardly when Daniel proposes having breakfast the next day.
Per Stensen also seems distracted, while Henry immediately attempts to bring Daniel back to Silo 1 when he walks away to speak with Helen. What do they know that Daniel and Helen do not?
If the founders knew that a nuclear attack was coming, why did they not alert U.S. intelligence agencies? Why would they allow the attack to happen?
There is also a revealing line from Helen’s guide during her tour of Silo 18. Describing the facility’s capabilities, he says: “This silo was built to withstand a 30-megaton nuclear explosion as close as two miles,”
Given what happens shortly afterward, the detail seems unusually specific. Silo 18 was designed to withstand a nuclear explosion at close range — precisely the situation that unfolds. That may be more than a coincidence.
Who wrote The Pact?
The Pact is an ancient document that functions almost like a Bible for the residents of the silos. Episode 9 finally reveals that Anna Thurman and psychologist Dr. Crnkovich wrote it together as a psychological survival manual.
“It’s some crazy shit she and Dr. C wrote,” Charles tells Helen the night before the silo visit. “It is a book of rules about how to live underground for 500 years without killing each other.”
Dr. Crnkovich later explains to Daniel that the silo project is largely about “managing mass trauma.”
He also admits that he and Anna did not write the entire document themselves.
“To be honest, AI wrote it,” he says. “We just did some editing.”
What will happen to Helen and Daniel?
Neither Daniel nor Helen is shown reaching safety, but both characters are close to the entrances of Silo 1 and Silo 18 when the nuclear explosion occurs. As central characters, it seems unlikely that their stories end there.
Helen’s arrival in Silo 18 may be especially important. Although the apocalypse occurs hundreds of years before the present-day events in Silo 18, Helen’s pregnancy raises the possibility that her descendants survive into the future. Could she and Daniel be ancestors of one of the main characters in Juliette’s silo?
Daniel is last seen being dragged toward Silo 1, the core silo that serves as a central hub for the entire system. Henry’s decision to separate Daniel and Helen at the beginning of the tour suggests that Daniel was deliberately selected for Silo 1, possibly because of his engineering expertise.
If Daniel survives, the founders likely have a specific role planned for him.
