Pat McAfee Delivers Cheeky Response to Viral Smoking Claims During ESPN Show

    Key Highlights

    • ESPN host Pat McAfee sparked viral speculation after a live broadcast clip showed him using an unidentified device, prompting viewers to question whether he was smoking marijuana on air.
    • McAfee responded to the speculation with a cryptic social media post stating, “A little sage never hurt nobody,” while also referencing the Buffalo Bills’ victory over the Detroit Lions.
    • The incident highlights the ongoing tension between McAfee’s unconventional, conversational broadcasting style and traditional network expectations, with ESPN yet to issue a public comment.

Viral Clip Ignites Speculation During Live Broadcast

ESPN personality Pat McAfee found himself at the center of social media scrutiny Thursday after a clip from his eponymous show circulated widely, leading viewers to speculate that the former NFL punter had been smoking marijuana during the live broadcast. The video, which quickly gained traction across platforms, does not definitively establish what McAfee was using, and no confirmation has been provided that the substance was cannabis. However, the ambiguity did little to dampen the reaction, particularly given McAfee’s history of speaking openly about his marijuana use.

    Past Admissions Fuel Current Debate

Speculation was fueled by McAfee’s own previous comments. During an earlier appearance on the “All the Smoke” podcast, McAfee stated directly: “I smoke a lot of weed. I do. I think that’s a massive piece of it for me.” That admission provided viewers with context for the latest conjecture, though it does not confirm what occurred during Thursday’s show. This is not the first time McAfee’s on-air habits have drawn attention; in 2025, he was seen using a pen during a live broadcast and later described it as “CBD and Vitamins.” That precedent added another layer to the ongoing discussion.

    McAfee Counters With Characteristic Ambiguity

Rather than offering a detailed explanation or denial, McAfee addressed the swirling rumors in the loose, joking tone central to his public persona. Taking to social media, he wrote: “A little sage never hurt nobody.” He followed that remark with a pivot to the night’s football action, adding: “Also This Buffalo Bills team came out on fire in their new home.. just smokin’ the Lions in all phases,” referencing Buffalo’s 41-31 victory over Detroit. The response suggested McAfee was content to let the debate continue without providing a definitive answer, a strategy consistent with his previous handling of similar moments.

    Unconventional Style Creates Polarizing Figure

Since transitioning from his Indianapolis Colts career into broadcasting, McAfee has become one of ESPN’s most recognizable football personalities. He built his audience by rejecting the polished style associated with traditional studio shows in favor of a more conversational, unpredictable approach. That formula has made him hugely popular with supporters, while simultaneously making him a frequent target of criticism. Following Thursday’s clip, some viewers objected to the imagery and questioned whether smoking anything on-air was appropriate for a major network platform. Others dismissed the controversy as overblown and entirely consistent with the atmosphere McAfee has cultivated around his program. As of publication, ESPN has not publicly commented on the viral moment.

    Why This Matters

The incident underscores the broader friction within sports media between evolving talent-driven formats and legacy network standards. McAfee’s success at ESPN represents a significant bet by the network on personality-first programming that blurs the line between traditional journalism and entertainment. However, moments like this test the boundaries of that partnership. With cannabis legalization expanding across the United States and societal stigmas shifting, the reaction also reflects a cultural debate about professionalism and authenticity on live television. The lack of an immediate statement from ESPN suggests the network is weighing how to address the situation without alienating McAfee’s substantial audience or compromising its own brand standards.

Bills Open Highmark Stadium, Eyeing Notable Arena Debut

The Buffalo Bills officially christen Highmark Stadium on Thursday night, hosting the Detroit Lions on Thursday Night Football in the venue’s first regular-season game. The $2.1 billion facility, which broke ground in May 2023, seats 60,108—roughly 10,000 fewer than the team’s previous home—and arrives engineered specifically for Western New York winters.

Highmark Stadium built for Buffalo weather

The stadium includes a natural grass field with underground heating coils to prevent freezing, what the team calls the world’s largest stadium snow-melt system that automatically monitors and melts accumulations using roof sensors, and a 360-degree canopy covering 60% of the seating bowl to reduce wind impact.

A look back at notable NFL stadium openers

As Buffalo opens its new home, here is a retrospective of opening games at currently active NFL stadiums.

Allegiant Stadium — Las Vegas Raiders (2020)

Less than a year after their final game in Oakland, the Raiders debuted at the $2 billion, 65,000-seat Allegiant Stadium on Monday Night Football. The coronavirus pandemic meant zero fans in attendance. Las Vegas fell behind the New Orleans Saints 10–0 in the first quarter before outscoring them 34–14 the rest of the way. Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 284 yards and three touchdowns; tight end Darren Waller caught 12 passes for 105 yards and a score.

SoFi Stadium — Los Angeles Rams & Chargers (2020)

Built at a cost exceeding $5 billion, SoFi Stadium is the world’s most expensive sports venue. The 3.1-million-square-foot, 70,000-seat stadium (expandable to 100,000) hosted separate debuts for its two tenants with contrasting results.

The Rams opened on Sunday Night Football against the Dallas Cowboys, winning a back-and-forth game 20–17. A week later, the Chargers lost in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs. That game marked quarterback Justin Herbert’s NFL debut; he threw for 311 yards with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown, joining Cam Newton and Otto Graham as the only quarterbacks to reach 300 passing yards and a rushing score in their first game.

    Levi’s Stadium — San Francisco 49ers (2014)

After over 40 years at Candlestick Park, the 49ers moved into the $1.3 billion, 68,500-seat Levi’s Stadium. The Chicago Bears spoiled the opener, scoring 21 unanswered fourth-quarter points to win 28–20. Colin Kaepernick threw consecutive fourth-quarter interceptions that led to Chicago touchdowns, and San Francisco’s final possession ended on a turnover on downs with 6:55 remaining.

MetLife Stadium — New York Giants & Jets (2010)

The former Giants Stadium tenants moved in together. The Giants opened against the Carolina Panthers—who had beaten them in the final game at the old venue—in front of just under 80,000 fans. New York reversed the result, winning 31–18 behind three touchdown passes from Eli Manning.

The next night, the Jets faced the Baltimore Ravens on Monday Night Football. Fresh off a conference championship appearance, New York lost a low-scoring 10–9 affair.

    AT&T Stadium — Dallas Cowboys (2009)

Dubbed “Jerry’s World,” the $1.2 billion palace opened as a spectacle with over 100,000 attendees. Celebrities included former President George W. Bush, who performed the coin toss, and LeBron James, who threw a football on the field. The massive jumbotron and fireworks debuted on Sunday Night Football.

The New York Giants were unfazed. After Dallas took a 31–30 lead with over three minutes left, New York drove for a game-winning 37-yard field goal as time expired. Eli Manning signed the visiting locker room wall afterward, writing the date, final score, and “first win in the new stadium.”

NRG Stadium — Houston Texans (2002)

The NFL’s most recent expansion team opened its stadium on Sunday Night Football against the Cowboys before just under 70,000 fans. No. 1 overall pick David Carr scored 75 seconds into the game, igniting the crowd. Houston never trailed en route to a 19–10 victory, becoming the first expansion team to win its debut since 1961.

Thursday Night Football Returns with Lions-Bills Showdown

The NFL’s Thursday Night Football slate resumes this week with a high-profile interconference clash as the Detroit Lions travel to face the Buffalo Bills at Highmark Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET on September 17. Both franchises enter Week 2 unbeaten: the Lions survived a one-point overtime thriller against the New Orleans Saints in their opener, while the Bills secured a narrow victory over the Houston Texans. The early-season matchup pits two of the league’s most dynamic offenses against each other, with Detroit’s resurgence under head coach Dan Campbell meeting Buffalo’s perennial contender status led by quarterback Josh Allen.

How to Watch Lions vs. Bills for Free from Anywhere

Viewers seeking a no-cost live stream can turn to 7Plus, the free streaming platform operated by Australia’s Seven Network. The service carries the broadcast but enforces geo-restrictions limiting access to Australian IP addresses. To bypass this barrier, users can employ a virtual private network (VPN) to mask their actual location and route their connection through a server in Australia. The process involves subscribing to a streaming-capable VPN, installing the application on a preferred device, connecting to an Australian server, and then navigating to 7Plus to begin watching. This method works across smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart TVs.

ExpressVPN Recommended for Reliable NFL Streaming

Among VPN providers, ExpressVPN is cited as the top choice for streaming NFL games due to its server footprint spanning 105 countries—including Australia—alongside apps for iPhone, Android, Windows, Mac, and other major platforms. The service maintains a strict no-logging policy, delivers fast connection speeds without throttling, and supports up to 10 simultaneous connections. A 30-day money-back guarantee backs every plan. Pricing options include a one-month plan at $12.99 and a two-year subscription currently discounted to $68.40, which adds four extra months free (an 81% savings) and includes a year of unlimited cloud backup. By leveraging the refund guarantee, viewers can stream Thursday night’s game and additional NFL action before deciding whether to retain the service.

    Why This Matters

The Lions-Bills matchup represents more than just a Week 2 spotlight game; it underscores the evolving landscape of sports media consumption. With premium live sports increasingly fragmented across paid platforms, geo-restricted free-to-air broadcasts like 7Plus have become valuable targets for international audiences using VPN technology. The NFL’s broadcasting agreements vary by territory, and while U.S. viewers typically require cable, YouTube TV, or Amazon Prime Video for Thursday Night Football, the Australian market retains a free-over-the-air option. This dynamic fuels demand for VPN services that specialize in streaming unblocking, particularly those offering risk-free trials via money-back guarantees. As the league expands its global footprint, the tension between territorial rights and borderless digital access will continue to shape how fans watch games.

Can I legally watch Lions vs. Bills for free outside Australia?
7Plus is a legitimate free streaming service in Australia. Using a VPN to access it from abroad falls into a legal gray area that depends on local laws and the platform’s terms of service; viewers should review applicable regulations in their jurisdiction.
What VPN features matter most for streaming NFL games?
Key factors include servers in the target country (Australia for 7Plus), fast and consistent speeds for HD video, a no-logging privacy policy, broad device compatibility, and a reliable money-back guarantee to test the service risk-free.
  • Lions vs. Bills: Three Must-Know Storylines for Thursday’s Week 2 Prime-Time Game

Lions vs. Bills: Three Must-Know Storylines for Thursday’s Week 2 Prime-Time Game

Can Either Defense Contain the Opposition’s Explosive Offense?

The Buffalo Bills and Detroit Lions enter their Week 2 matchup with offenses that appeared unstoppable in the season opener, but the central question remains whether either defense can impose its will. Detroit managed just one scoreless quarter in Week 1, highlighting the challenge ahead.

Josh Allen Dominates Elite Texans Defense

Josh Allen accounted for 357 yards of total offense and four touchdowns against a Houston Texans unit that allowed the fewest yards and second-fewest points in the NFL during the 2025 season. The Texans returned a largely intact roster for 2026, featuring five Pro Bowl starters from last year, including first-team All-Pro selections Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr. If Houston’s premier defense could not slow Allen, the league must wonder which unit can.

Lions Secondary Faces Significant Injury Hurdles

Detroit’s path to an upset relies heavily on keeping its defense off the field through ball control. However, the Lions enter the game with a patchwork secondary due to injuries to Brian Branch and Kerby Joseph. While Detroit possesses front-seven All-Pro talent in Aidan Hutchinson and Jack Campbell, the compromised backfield faces a daunting assignment against Buffalo’s aerial attack.

Detroit’s Ground Game Could Exploit Buffalo’s Run Defense

The Lions’ clearest formula for success involves pounding the rock and dominating time of possession. This strategy appears viable against a Bills run defense that surrendered 124 rushing yards to the Texans in the opener. David Montgomery, former running mate of Jahmyr Gibbs, punched in two of his three touchdowns on the ground. Run defense was a pronounced weakness for Buffalo last season, when the unit yielded 136.2 yards per game, ranking 28th in the league.

    Early Test for New Coordinators

Thursday night presents a significant early test for new Bills defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard. On the opposite sideline, first-year Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing showed no inclination to hold back, deploying game-breaker Jahmyr Gibbs for a career-high 34 touches in Week 1. The strategic chess match between these coordinators will likely dictate the game’s flow.

  • Sources: Patriots to Add DaQuan Jones on 1-Year Deal

Sources: Patriots to Add DaQuan Jones on 1-Year Deal

The New England Patriots are expected to sign veteran defensive tackle DaQuan Jones to a one-year contract worth up to $6 million, according to sources who spoke with NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Friday.

    Contract Details and Role

The 12-year veteran will receive a $3.5 million base salary as part of the agreement. Jones arrives in New England as a proven interior presence, having started all 51 regular-season games he appeared in over the past four seasons with the Buffalo Bills, along with eight postseason contests under former head coach Sean McDermott.

    Reunion with Mike Vrabel

The signing reunites Jones with Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. The two spent three seasons together with the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2020, when Vrabel served as Tennessee’s head coach. That familiarity should ease Jones’ transition into New England’s defensive scheme.

    Depth Chart Impact

Jones joins a defensive tackle room that currently features Milton Williams, Cory Durden, and Christian Barmore at the top of the depth chart. Joshua Farmer and Leonard Taylor III project as the primary backups. The addition provides valuable experience and rotational depth at a position that relies heavily on fresh legs.

    Production and Durability

Since 2022, Jones has recorded 10 regular-season sacks and posted a 37% run stop win rate, which ranked sixth on the Bills during that span. His 2023 campaign was interrupted by a torn pectoral muscle that required surgery and forced him to miss 10 games, but he returned to form in 2024.

    Career Timeline

A fourth-round selection by the Titans in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Penn State, Jones spent his first seven professional seasons in Tennessee, starting 93 of 99 games played. He played the 2021 season with the Carolina Panthers, starting all 17 games. Across his career, the 34-year-old has accumulated 20 sacks and 372 tackles.

ESPN’s Mike Reiss and Alaina Getzenberg contributed to this report.

  • 2026 NFL Predictions: Super Bowl Matchup, Playoff Bracket, and Award Winners

2026 NFL Predictions: Super Bowl Matchup, Playoff Bracket, and Award Winners

The 2026 NFL season officially launched Wednesday night as the reigning champion Seattle Seahawks overcame a Sam Darnold injury to defeat the New England Patriots in a rematch of last season’s Super Bowl. Given the historical difficulty for Super Bowl participants to return to the championship game the following year, most analysts are hesitant to back either team for a repeat appearance.

Los Angeles Rams Emerge as Consensus NFC Favorite

While the Seahawks and Patriots face long odds, the Los Angeles Rams have become the near-unanimous choice to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. Following a series of high-profile offseason acquisitions, the Rams enter the season with heightened expectations, and a championship run would surprise few observers.

    2026 AFC Playoff Predictions

The AFC playoff picture projects as relatively straightforward, with seven teams positioned for postseason berths:

    • Denver Broncos
    • Buffalo Bills
    • Baltimore Ravens
    • Jacksonville Jaguars
    • Los Angeles Chargers
    • Houston Texans
    • Cincinnati Bengals

    2026 NFC Playoff Predictions

The NFC landscape appears more uncertain, but the projected playoff field includes:

    • Los Angeles Rams
    • Detroit Lions
    • Philadelphia Eagles
    • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Seattle Seahawks
    • Chicago Bears
    • Dallas Cowboys

    Super Bowl LXI Projection

Securing the top seed and a first-round bye should position both the Broncos and Rams for deep playoff runs. However, the forecast has Josh Allen and the Bills overcoming Denver in the AFC Championship Game to reach the Super Bowl. On the NFC side, the Rams validate the consensus pick and advance to the title game.

Final Super Bowl LXI Prediction: Bills 27, Rams 24.

2026 NFL Player and Coach Award Forecasts

Last season saw Matthew Stafford claim MVP, Jaxon Smith-Njigba earn Offensive Player of the Year, and Myles Garrett take Defensive Player of the Year honors. The projections for the upcoming campaign feature a new slate of candidates:

    • MVP: Josh Allen
    • Offensive Player of the Year: Jahmyr Gibbs
    • Defensive Player of the Year: Will Anderson Jr.
    • Offensive Rookie of the Year: Jeremiyah Love
    • Defensive Rookie of the Year: Caleb Downs
    • Comeback Player of the Year: Aaron Donald

  • Myles Garrett Nearly Joined Josh Allen in Super Bowl Bid

Myles Garrett Nearly Joined Josh Allen in Super Bowl Bid

The Cleveland Browns sent Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams in one of the most significant moves of the NFL offseason, yet the departure of the franchise defensive star nearly followed a different trajectory. According to Tom Pelissero of The Ringer, the Buffalo Bills had monitored Garrett’s situation for several years and launched a last-minute attempt to acquire the defender on the same day the Cleveland–Los Angeles deal became public.

Bills Made Late Push for Garrett

“But sources say another team called Cleveland on the day the trade leaked: the Bills, who had checked in periodically on Garrett’s availability for the better part of two years,” Pelissero wrote.

Buffalo ultimately could not match Los Angeles’ offer because the Bills lacked a player of Jared Verse’s caliber to include in a trade package. The Browns received the young defensive end along with three draft picks: a first-round selection in the loaded 2027 class, a second-round pick in 2028, and a third-round selection in 2029.

Verse Was the Centerpiece for Cleveland

Cleveland general manager Andrew Berry explained that acquiring Verse was a primary driver behind the decision to move Garrett.

“Chief among the considerations to make the decision was the inclusion of Jared Verse,” Berry said on June 1. “We receive a young, elite player at a premium position who will only continue to improve in his third NFL season. Jared’s passion and relentless style of play will be embraced by our fans. He will fit right in with the established identity of our defense.”

During the offseason, the Browns even proposed a rule change that would have allowed teams to trade draft picks up to five years into the future. The NFL rejected the proposal, though it raises the question of whether a more aggressive draft-capital package from Buffalo could have altered the outcome.

Age and Timeline Fit for Both Sides

While Cleveland builds for the future with Verse, the Rams acquire one of the most dominant defensive players in the league. Verse, a first-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, already owns two Pro Bowl selections and was named Defensive Rookie of the Year in his debut season. At 25—turning 26 in November—his age aligns better with the Browns’ competitive timeline.

Garrett, meanwhile, is 30 and will turn 31 in December. He has dealt with knee issues during the Rams’ offseason preparation, causing him to miss part of the preseason. Los Angeles has confirmed, however, that he will be available for the season opener against the San Francisco 49ers in Australia.

Garrett Enters MVP Conversation After Historic 2025

Following a historic 2025 campaign in which he set the NFL single-season record with 23 sacks and captured his second Defensive Player of the Year award, Garrett has emerged as a legitimate candidate to win the league’s Most Valuable Player award.

Sports Illustrated reporter John Pluym named the new Rams star as his favorite for the top individual honor.

“Myles Garrett will win MVP. There have been only two defensive MVPs in NFL history: Alan Page on the 1971 Vikings and Lawrence Taylor on the 1986 Giants,” Pluym wrote. “Was there a bigger story this offseason than the Browns trading Garrett to the Rams? No. Garrett is the best player in the league and will finally have the opportunity to play on a winner after several frustrating years in Cleveland. I’m going to predict 25-plus sacks for him this season and a Super Bowl ring.”

  • Which NFL Teams Finished the Preseason Undefeated? Recent History Offers a Warning Ahead of the 2026 Season

Which NFL Teams Finished the Preseason Undefeated? Recent History Offers a Warning Ahead of the 2026 Season

The 2026 NFL season is approaching, and the Los Angeles Rams have emerged as the clear favorite in the NFC. Their status is partly driven by the fact that Super Bowl 61 will be played at SoFi Stadium, their home venue and the site where they won their most recent Lombardi Trophy four seasons ago.

The Rams also boast an elite offense led by reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams. However, their biggest strength is their defense, which received a major boost through the blockbuster trade for reigning Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett after his record-breaking sack campaign.

Los Angeles also acquired star cornerback Trent McDuffie and welcomed the stunning return of three-time Defensive Player of the Year Aaron Donald. The 35-year-old came out of retirement on a one-year, $20 million contract, joining Garrett to form what could be one of the most intimidating pass-rushing duos in NFL history.

Rams, Seahawks Take Different Paths Into the 2026 Season

On paper, the defending champion Seattle Seahawks are the Rams’ biggest challenger in the NFC. However, the two teams had dramatically different preseasons. Los Angeles swept its three exhibition games against the Chiefs, Saints, and Chargers, while Seattle failed to win a single preseason matchup.

The Seahawks also experienced more significant roster departures than incoming additions during the offseason, further strengthening the case for the Rams as the NFC’s leading contender.

Los Angeles finished the preseason undefeated alongside the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals. Although all four teams appear to be strong playoff candidates on paper, recent NFL history offers a warning to every unbeaten preseason team.

Unbeaten NFL Preseasons Have Delivered Limited Playoff Success

Since the preseason schedule was reduced from four games to three in 2021, 25 teams have completed the exhibition schedule undefeated. Only 10 of those teams reached the postseason, producing a 40% success rate.

The trend becomes even more concerning when looking at playoff advancement. Of the 25 teams that went unbeaten during that span, only the Denver Broncos advanced beyond the wild-card round last year.

For the Rams, Bills, Ravens, and Bengals—all widely projected to contend for a Super Bowl—the historical odds are unexpectedly unfavorable. Based on these trends, at least one of the four teams could miss the postseason entirely.

Missing January football would be an unmitigated disaster for the Bills and Rams. For the Ravens, failing to reach the playoffs in consecutive seasons has never happened during the Lamar Jackson era. Meanwhile, another postseason absence would give the Bengals four straight years without playoff football and place immense pressure on Joe Burrow and the franchise’s front office.

  • Josh Allen Pays Sweet Tribute to Hailee Steinfeld, Daughter

Josh Allen Pays Sweet Tribute to Hailee Steinfeld, Daughter

Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen revealed a personal ritual during a recent GQ “10 Essentials” feature: he carries two Polaroid photos in his wallet at all times. One captures his wife, actress Hailee Steinfeld. The other shows their daughter, Harper Haize, born in April 2025.

    A Father’s Constant Reminder

“The most important to me… in my wallet, I always keep two Polaroids, now two, it used to always be one,” Allen said. He declined to show the images to the camera. “I’m not going to show you these,” Allen continued. “It’s my wife and my baby. Had a baby a few months ago. I didn’t, my wife did. Got to have them in my pocket at all times.” He added with a smile, “They’re the best. It’s so cute.”

The admission offers a rare glimpse into the private life of the 30-year-old NFL star. Allen and Steinfeld, 29, married in California in May 2025 after first being linked in 2023. They announced their pregnancy in December 2024 and have largely kept their daughter out of the public eye.

    Fatherhood Adds New Motivation

Entering his ninth NFL season, Allen said becoming a father has deepened his drive on the field. “I think one is to provide for my family and two, it’s to show this young baby that when she’s growing up, how hard life can sometimes get and how hard you have to work at certain things to accomplish some things that may be crazy to others,” Allen said. “There are a lot of reasons why I play this game,” he added. “But it’s only added more reasons as to why I do it.”

The couple’s transition from newlyweds to parents has unfolded in under a year, all while Allen prepares to lead a Bills team with Super Bowl aspirations. Steinfeld has shown support publicly, attending a preseason game at the team’s new Highmark Stadium in August and sharing a view from inside the venue on social media.

For Allen, the Polaroids serve as a portable anchor. Whether at the stadium, on the road, or anywhere the season takes him, the photos keep his family close without putting them on display. As he put it, they remain with him “at all times.”
