TCU wide receiver Dozie Ezukanma spent three days in the hospital after teammate Jacob Fields allegedly punched and kicked him in the head inside the football team’s locker room, according to an arrest warrant affidavit. Ezukanma suffered a brain bleed, concussion and a strained AC joint in his shoulder.

Fields was arrested and charged with aggravated assault after the Aug. 13 incident at TCU’s Walsh Athletic Complex in Fort Worth. He was dismissed from the team following the assault.

What the TCU police affidavit says

Ezukanma was sitting in the locker room and looking at his phone when Fields approached and struck him in the forehead with a closed fist, causing him to fall to the floor, a witness told police. Fields then kicked Ezukanma in the head, according to the witness.

During an Aug. 20 interview with TCU police after being released from the hospital, Ezukanma said he was unconscious following the assault. He remembered sitting in the training room and asking people, “What just happened.” Sophomore wide receiver Terry Shelton then told him that Fields had punched him in the head and kicked him while he was on the ground, according to the affidavit.

Ezukanma told police he did not remember the assault. He reported a severe headache and shoulder pain. A police sergeant noted abrasions on his face where he had struck the floor.

Ezukanma believed Fields attacked him because he had been playing better in practice the previous day. He also said the two players had been “going hard” at each other since the start of training camp.

In a text message to Ezukanma that was shared with TCU police, Fields wrote, “I made an emotional decision cause how I felt I played the last few practices.” He also wrote, “I’ll pay every hospital bill and then some to make this right.”

Witnesses describe the locker-room assault

Shelton told TCU police that he saw Fields punch Ezukanma. Shelton believed Ezukanma was “knocked out” before he hit the floor. He then saw Fields pull his leg back and kick Ezukanma in the head “as hard as he could,” according to the affidavit.

Shelton said he pushed Fields into the lockers and told him, “You can’t be doing that. We are teammates.” Other teammates came over after hearing the commotion. Sophomore wide receiver Jacobe Hayes lifted Ezukanma’s legs to check on him, the affidavit states.

Curtis Talley Jr., an assistant athletic trainer for the football team, told police he was in the training room when he heard Shelton yell, “We need you over here.” Ezukanma had his face covered and was crying from the pain.

Talley said Ezukanma had a concussion. When Talley asked where he was hurt, Ezukanma replied, “My head hurts.” Shelton told Talley that the suspect had struck the victim in the back of his head, according to the affidavit.

Ezukanma treated for a brain bleed

After the team doctor examined Ezukanma at Schollmaier Arena, the doctor recommended a CT scan to determine whether he had a brain bleed. Talley drove Ezukanma to the emergency room at Harris Hospital in downtown Fort Worth after Ezukanma reported ringing in his ears.

The assault occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m., and Talley drove Ezukanma to the hospital at about 3:12 p.m. An urgent CT scan showed a brain bleed, according to the affidavit. Ezukanma was transferred to the intensive care unit, where a second CT scan at about 7:30 p.m. indicated that the hematoma had grown.

Doctors gave Ezukanma medication to control his blood pressure and pain. A third CT scan at approximately 11 p.m. showed that he was in stable condition, Talley told police.

When police asked whether a brain bleed could be life-threatening, Talley said, “Yes, if it continues to grow in size,” according to the affidavit. Ezukanma was admitted to the hospital Aug. 13 and released Aug. 16.

Jacob Fields arrested after TCU dismissal

TCU police contacted Fields on Aug. 21, but he declined an interview and directed officers to his attorney, according to the affidavit.

Fields was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on the morning of Aug. 30 and released that afternoon on $50,000 bond. TCU reported the assault to campus police Aug. 14, and Fields was dismissed from the team Aug. 15, a TCU athletics spokesperson confirmed. The team announced his dismissal Aug. 18.

In a now-deleted Instagram video, Ezukanma said Fields hit him from behind in the locker room.

“How you gon’ sucker punch me, bro. That’s your teammate,” Ezukanma said.

Fields’ agent, Phillip “Red” Miller of PM3 Sports, said Fields voluntarily turned himself in and issued a statement on his behalf.

“I understand the media and public may be looking for an explosive statement from Jacob or me,” he said. “Now is not the time or the place. We will not try this case through social media or the court of public opinion. There is a proper place for the facts to be heard, and we will respect that process.”

Fields was expected to be a major contributor for TCU after transferring from Louisiana Tech. He was voted Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year the previous season and was considered the leading candidate to start at free safety in place of Bud Clark.

Ezukanma, a former standout at Keller Timber Creek, entered the season projected to start at outside wide receiver. He did not play in TCU’s 15-10 season-opening loss to North Carolina in Dublin.
