Marlins Beat Diamondbacks 4-3 in Sep 16, 2026 Game Recap

Marlins Edge Diamondbacks 4-3 as Alcantara Notches First Career Save

PHOENIX — Jakob Marsee delivered a two-run home run and Sandy Alcantara recorded his first career save as the Miami Marlins held off the Arizona Diamondbacks 4-3 Wednesday night at Chase Field.

Alcantara Shines in Unfamiliar Relief Role

With the Marlins (76-77) lingering on the fringe of the National League playoff race, manager Clayton McCullough turned to his ace starter for the ninth inning — just two days after Alcantara threw 101 pitches in a no-decision against the same Diamondbacks lineup. Alcantara, who leads the majors with 206 innings pitched this season, induced two deep flyouts before walking Lars Nootbaar. Pinch-runner Jordan Lawlar attempted to steal second but was thrown out by catcher Joe Mack to end the game.

The save marked Alcantara’s first relief appearance since his rookie season with St. Louis in 2017. The right-hander has made 201 big league starts in his career.

    Playoff Implications for Arizona

The loss dropped the Diamondbacks (80-73) 3 1/2 games behind San Diego for the final NL wild-card spot with nine games remaining.

    Marsee Powers Miami Offense

Marsee connected for his 11th homer of the season in the third inning against Merrill Kelly (9-14) with Javier Sanoja aboard. The outfielder also doubled to spark a two-run second inning. Miami eventually loaded the bases, and Heriberto Hernández drove in a run with an infield single. Another run scored on a throwing error by third baseman Nolan Arenado.

Hernández finished with four of Miami’s 10 hits.

    Diamondbacks Power Surge Not Enough

Arizona got home runs from Pavin Smith, Gabriel Moreno and Arenado. Moreno collected three hits to raise his batting average to .307; the Phillies’ Luis Arraez leads the National League at .316.

Kelly Reaches Milestone in Tough Outing

Kelly, making his 200th major league start, lasted 4 2/3 innings. He allowed seven hits and four runs (three earned) with two walks and nine strikeouts.

    Nelson Returns from Injured List

Ryne Nelson, just activated from the 60-day injured list, pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings in his first appearance since June 15. He had been sidelined with a strained right elbow.

    Marlins Bullpen Bridges the Gap

Marlins starter Ryan Gusto also failed to escape the fifth inning, allowing eight hits and two runs. Cade Gibson (5-1) recorded five outs for the win.

    Upcoming Schedule

Marlins: Following a day off, RHP Tyler Phillips (5-6, 3.55 ERA) starts Friday in San Diego.

Diamondbacks: Begin a three-game series Friday against the New York Yankees at Chase Field.

Diamondbacks Announce Lineup for Crucial Game 2 vs. Marlins

Diamondbacks Set Lineup for Crucial Game 2 Against Marlins as Playoff Race Tightens

The Arizona Diamondbacks remain alive in the National League Wild Card hunt after a dramatic Monday night victory, and they have unveiled their batting order for a pivotal Tuesday showdown with the Miami Marlins at Chase Field.

Carroll’s Walk-Off Keeps Playoff Hopes Alive

Arizona entered the week in a precarious position, with every game carrying postseason implications. Star outfielder Corbin Carroll delivered a two-run walk-off home run on Monday, preventing the club from losing ground in the crowded Wild Card standings and setting the stage for a potential series win.

New Addition Jesus Sanchez Makes Immediate Impact

The most notable change to the lineup is the debut of newly acquired outfielder and designated hitter Jesus Sanchez. The Diamondbacks claimed the left-handed hitter off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday, and he officially joined the active roster Tuesday afternoon. To make room, rookie utility player Tommy Troy was optioned to Triple-A Reno.

Sanchez, who appeared for Toronto as recently as August 25 against the Kansas City Royals, is expected to see the majority of his playing time at designated hitter. Defensive metrics have graded him as a below-average outfielder this season, but his offensive profile addresses a specific roster need: Arizona has struggled against right-handed pitching, and Sanchez carries pronounced reverse splits that suggest he can provide immediate production in those matchups. With a heavy dose of right-handed starters looming in the season’s final stretch, his arrival is timely.

Pavin Smith Earns First Start at First Base Since Recall

Another left-handed bat returns to the infield. Pavin Smith, who was designated for assignment on July 10 before being brought back to the major-league roster on September 12, will make his first start at first base since his recall. In two previous appearances as the designated hitter, Smith has gone 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI, offering a glimpse of the contact-oriented approach the coaching staff values in high-leverage spots.

    Lineup Configuration for Game 2

With Sanchez slotted in as the DH and Smith taking over at first, the Diamondbacks are stacking left-handed offense to counter Miami’s right-handed pitching. The move signals a clear “win-now” posture from the front office and manager Torey Lovullo as the club navigates the most critical week of the 2026 season to date.

Diamondbacks vs. Rangers Discussion – Yahoo Sports

The Arizona Diamondbacks open a critical weekend series needing to spark an offense that has gone cold over the past two and a half weeks. With the San Diego Padres facing the San Francisco Giants up the coast, and the Chicago Cubs already securing a win while the Philadelphia Phillies sit in a rain delay against the Milwaukee Brewers, the National League wild-card picture is shifting in real time.

    Offensive Slump Defies Winning Record

Despite a respectable 10-7 record over their last 17 games, Arizona has been outscored 63-55 during that span. The team is averaging barely three runs per game, posting a collective .626 OPS across 622 plate appearances. Getting the bats back on track is the primary objective for a club trying to keep pace in a tight playoff race.

Runners Left on Base: Narrative vs. Reality

Contrary to a popular narrative in game-day discussions, the Diamondbacks have actually left a below-average number of runners on base this season. To date, they have stranded 111 fewer baserunners than the Cubs, suggesting the recent scoring drought stems more from a lack of baserunners than a failure to drive them in.

    Around the League

Scoreboard watching will be essential tonight. The Padres are in San Francisco taking on the Giants, while the Phillies and Brewers wait out a rain delay before what projects as a difficult road series for Philadelphia. The Cubs have already banked a victory, adding pressure on Arizona to handle its business at home.

  • Philadelphia Phillies Close Out August With Tight Win in the Desert

Philadelphia Phillies Close Out August With Tight Win in the Desert

August delivered a historic run for the Philadelphia Phillies, who closed the month with a tense 2-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field on Monday night.

The win gave Philadelphia a 21-7 record in August, the best mark in Major League Baseball. The Phillies’ dominant month came after they struggled to a 9-15 record in July.

“Twenty-two and six would have been all right, too,” manager Don Mattingly joked.

With the regular season entering its final month, the Phillies are tied with the Chicago Cubs for the National League’s top wild-card position. They trail the first-place Atlanta Braves by four games in the NL East with 24 games remaining. Philadelphia and Atlanta will meet seven times over the next two weeks, beginning with Friday night’s series opener at Citizens Bank Park.

Although the Phillies are chasing the Braves, Mattingly said the team remains focused on the immediate challenge. Monday’s game was the first of a series against the Diamondbacks, who are also firmly involved in the National League wild-card race.

“It’s day-to-day business at this point,” Mattingly said. “You can’t worry about tomorrow. Just take care of today. Arizona is a difficult club. We have to win games. It’s as simple as that. We can’t look past anyone.”

Philadelphia secured the win behind a strong start from Aaron Nola, effective relief pitching and important hits from Bryson Stott and Bryce Harper.

Stott hit a 464-foot home run in the second inning, the longest of his career and the eighth-longest in the majors this season. Harper followed with an RBI double in the third inning, extending his on-base streak to 33 games.

Those were the Phillies’ only runs, but their pitching made the lead hold up.

Nola earned the win after allowing one run over five innings. He has posted a 2.50 ERA across his last seven starts.

The right-hander had thrown 92 pitches through five innings and began the sixth with Philadelphia holding a one-run advantage. After quickly allowing a single and a walk, Nola was replaced by Alex McFarlane in a high-pressure situation. The 25-year-old rookie right-hander responded by recording three outs to preserve the lead.

McFarlane’s biggest moment came after he fell behind Nolan Arenado 3-1. He recovered to strike out the veteran on a 99-mph fastball and a sweeper for the second out.

“For a kid who debuted a month ago, the demeanor he has on the mound in a situation like that is pretty incredible,” catcher Garrett Stubbs said. “Arenado’s a really good hitter. You want to attack him and not be afraid of him. In that moment, you look out at him on the mound and he didn’t show anything but wanting to attack the zone.”

    Nola praised McFarlane’s performance.

“That’s pretty special right there. Pretty awesome,” Nola said. “I left him in a tough spot, two guys on and no outs. He navigated through it really nicely. The strikeout of Arenado was pretty awesome. He’s got a lot of composure out there. He doesn’t really pitch like a rookie. He fills up the zone. I know he had a couple of three-ball counts, but that didn’t faze him. He’s electric.”

McFarlane understood the challenge of facing Arenado.

“Seeing Arenado in the box is a great thing,” he said. “The respect I have for that guy, watching him over the years. He’s a great hitter and Hall of Fame player. I love the opportunity to face those guys. It was great.”

McFarlane has surrendered only one earned run in his first 10 1/3 major-league innings. He has appeared four times in the first seven games of Philadelphia’s road trip, throwing four scoreless innings without allowing a hit. He has walked two batters and struck out five.

“He’s handled everything we’ve thrown at him,” Mattingly said. “We’ve put him in some tough spots lately. That was probably the toughest spot tonight. His stuff plays. When he’s in the zone and attacking, he’s pretty good. He doesn’t seem to be overwhelmed by anything at this point.”

With the postseason race intensifying, McFarlane could become an important part of the Phillies’ bullpen.

“This was a big game,” Mattingly said. “He was a factor tonight. He’s got stuff. He’s throwing strikes for the most part. He’s got weapons. When you throw 102 (mph) with a good slider and can sink it, as well, you’ve got weapons.”

Orion Kerkering and Brooks Raley combined for a scoreless seventh inning. Jose Alvarado worked around trouble to post a scoreless eighth, and Jhoan Duran survived two infield hits in the ninth to record his 29th save. Duran finished the game with the potential tying run on third base.

The Phillies have won 14 of their last 16 games.

Philadelphia now turns to September, with Jesús Luzardo scheduled to start Tuesday night.

Phillies Add Rafael Marchan and Grant Holman

Major League rosters expand to 28 players Tuesday, and the Phillies will add catcher Rafael Marchan and right-handed reliever Grant Holman.

Marchan went on the injured list in late July with left knee tendinitis and had been completing a rehabilitation assignment with Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Holman, 26, was claimed by Philadelphia off waivers from Detroit in May. He appeared in 20 games for Lehigh Valley, recording a 3.12 ERA with 25 strikeouts and five walks over 26 innings.

Holman, who has previous major-league experience with the Athletics, has already played for five organizations in 2026. He was waived four times.

  • Aaron Nola Could Be the Phillies’ Biggest X-Factor in September

Aaron Nola Could Be the Phillies’ Biggest X-Factor in September

The Philadelphia Phillies enter September with momentum after sweeping the Los Angeles Angels over the weekend. As Philadelphia concludes its West Coast trip, the team has gained ground on the Chicago Cubs in the National League wild-card race and is tied with Chicago for the top position entering Monday.

The Phillies’ recent success has been a team effort, but Aaron Nola has emerged as one of the club’s biggest surprises. After struggling at times early in the season, the veteran right-hander delivered one of his strongest stretches in August. Maintaining that form could be crucial for Philadelphia during the final month of the regular season.

Aaron Nola Could Be a Major Phillies X-Factor in September

Nola is scheduled to start Philadelphia’s series opener against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night. The Phillies have plenty to like about what he accomplished in August leading into that start.

In five starts this month, Nola has posted a 2-1 record and a 2.79 ERA. He has also recorded 37 strikeouts in 29 innings, showing an improved ability to generate swings and misses. His curveball has been particularly effective, while opposing hitters are batting just .231 against him in August.

Although August has been Nola’s best month of the season, his turnaround began to take shape in July. He had started to find his rhythm despite not recording a win. That progress has now carried into August, making the veteran look more like the dominant version of Nola Phillies fans have seen in the past.

Nola will be an important part of Philadelphia’s push toward the postseason. The Phillies have been playing well recently, and a stronger back end of the starting rotation gives the team a better chance to succeed. With Philadelphia’s playoff-clinch number down to 21, an October berth appears increasingly likely.

If Nola continues pitching at his August level, he could enter the playoffs as the Phillies’ fourth starter in a longer series. That would represent a significant turnaround from the way he began the season, but he must sustain his performance throughout September to make that possibility a reality.

  • Yunior Marte Named San Francisco Giants Starting Pitcher

Yunior Marte Named San Francisco Giants Starting Pitcher

Marte allowed one run on three hits and two walks while striking out three over 4.2 innings in his major-league debut, earning a no-decision against the Diamondbacks in Game 2 of Saturday’s doubleheader.

He threw 48 of 76 pitches for strikes and fell one out short of pitching the required innings for a win. Despite that, Marte’s debut was encouraging and could give him a chance to remain in the Giants’ rotation for the rest of the season.

San Francisco entered the doubleheader with two rotation openings because of recent pitching injuries. However, the 22-year-old has already logged 112.1 innings this season, up from 102 innings last year, so the Giants may impose a modest workload restriction if he stays in the majors.

  • Diamondbacks Select Derek Law’s Contract

    Diamondbacks Select Derek Law’s Contract

The Arizona Diamondbacks have selected right-hander Derek Law’s contract from Triple-A Reno, adding a veteran reliever to their bullpen for the stretch run.

Left-hander Mitch Bratt was also recalled from Reno to serve as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader against the San Francisco Giants. In the corresponding move for Law, left-hander Kohl Drake was optioned to Reno. Arizona did not need to make a 40-man roster move because the team had only 39 players on its 40-man roster.

Derek Law returns to the major leagues

Law has pitched in the majors for six different clubs during his eight seasons in the Show. He will add Arizona to that list once he makes his Diamondbacks debut.

The right-hander has not pitched in the majors since September 2024. He missed all of last season because of arm problems that ultimately led to flexor tendon surgery in July 2025.

Law returned to game action with two Rookie League appearances in May, but another setback kept him sidelined until August 12. He then began a five-game rehabilitation stint with Triple-A Reno.

Across 6 1/3 innings for Reno, Law allowed five hits while issuing no walks and giving up no runs. That performance convinced the Diamondbacks they had seen enough to promote the veteran to the major-league bullpen.

    Diamondbacks add bullpen depth

It remains to be seen what Law can provide after such a lengthy layoff, but he owns a strong track record as a major-league reliever. He has a 3.69 ERA across 346 career innings.

Law has never been a high-strikeout pitcher. Instead, he has succeeded by limiting hard contact, posting a 37.1% career hard-hit rate. His most recent MLB season was also one of his best: Law recorded a 2.60 ERA and a 48.5% ground-ball rate across 90 innings for the Washington Nationals in 2024 while producing elite chase and barrel rates.

Arizona would gladly accept a similar performance as it looks to strengthen its bullpen for the postseason push. The Diamondbacks entered today’s action a half-game behind the San Diego Padres for the final National League wild-card spot, while their 4.44 bullpen ERA since the All-Star break ranked 23rd among MLB’s 30 teams.

  • Diamondbacks’ Bullpen Shines in Win Over Royals

Diamondbacks’ Bullpen Shines in Win Over Royals

The Arizona Diamondbacks secured a dramatic 5-4 victory over the Kansas City Royals in 10 innings at Kauffman Stadium on Monday, overcoming a scoreless nine-inning duel against reigning American League Pitcher of the Month Noah Cameron.

Bullpen Committee Delivers Nine Scoreless Innings

Manager Torey Lovullo deployed a bullpen-day strategy, and the relief corps responded with a herculean effort. Opener Derek Law set the tone with two scoreless innings. Jose Cabrera, Taylor Clarke, Brandyn Garcia, and Justin Martinez followed, combining for seven more hitless frames. The unit held the Royals without a runner reaching second base until the 10th inning.

Cameron matched the Diamondbacks’ pitchers zero for zero, allowing no runner past first base over six innings. Arizona’s offense fouled off 27 of Cameron’s pitches—tied for the most against a Royals pitcher this season, per Statcast—forcing his early exit. Strong defense backed the Arizona staff, including two key plays by first baseman Ildemaro Vargas and Clarke working around an error in the sixth inning.

Five-Run 10th Inning Breaks the Deadlock

The Diamondbacks’ offense exploded in the top of the 10th against veteran reliever Craig Kimbrel. Lars Nootbaar broke the tie with a sacrifice fly, and Geraldo Perdomo added an RBI single. A fielding error by right fielder John Rave allowed a third run to score, and Arizona pushed two more runs across to take a 5-0 lead.

Royals Rally Creates Tension in the Bottom Half

Kansas City answered with three runs in the bottom of the 10th, highlighted by a three-run double from Salvador Perez with one out. The Royals pulled within a run, but Dennis Santana entered for Gerardo Carillo and shut the door. Santana induced a flyout from Michael Massey and struck out Nick Loftin looking to secure the save.

    Historical Rarity

According to MLB records, this is only the third game since the divisional era began in 1969 to remain scoreless through nine innings yet finish with both teams scoring at least four runs. The previous occurrences were the Astros-Athletics on April 24, 2015, and the White Sox-Mariners on June 5, 2013.

    Manager and Player Reflections

Lovullo praised the preparation of his relievers, particularly Santana, who had not pitched in eight days.

“Santana, who hasn’t thrown in eight days, comes in and gets the save,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “That tells me a story. It tells me what he has been doing when nobody is watching, because he was prepared for that moment.”

Regarding the 10th inning, Lovullo added:

“The 10th was a little dicey,” Lovullo said. “We knew we had sold out for nine innings with the [pitchers] we knew were available. We went to that next layer, and the first nine innings were fantastic.”

Derek Law, a veteran enjoying his first playoff push in a decade, emphasized the team’s resilience.

“It has been 10 years since the last playoff push for me, and this is pretty exciting for the old dog,” Law said. “This team is resilient, a lot of close games. You would like it to be 10-0, but good teams play close games and win close games.”

Lovullo summed up the team’s identity:

“We hung in there,” Lovullo said. “This team is tough.”

    Playoff Implications and Returning Reinforcements

The win improves the Diamondbacks to 77-68 on the season and 3-1 on their current six-game road trip. Arizona sits 11 games over .500 since July 9, maintaining pressure on the San Diego Padres for the third National League Wild Card spot. The club received additional encouragement with veteran starters Corbin Burnes, Zac Gallen, and Michael Soroka all nearing returns for the final stretch.

  • Corbin Carroll Hits Walk-Off Home Run as Diamondbacks Beat Marlins

Corbin Carroll Hits Walk-Off Home Run as Diamondbacks Beat Marlins

The Arizona Diamondbacks rallied for a dramatic 8-7 walk-off victory over the Miami Marlins at Chase Field on Monday night, keeping their National League Wild Card hopes alive. Corbin Carroll delivered the decisive blow, a two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning that capped a comeback from a 7-4 deficit after seven innings.

    Carroll’s Clutch Homer Shifts Momentum

The win carries significant weight in the tight NL Wild Card race. The San Diego Padres, who currently hold the final spot, defeated the Colorado Rockies earlier in the evening. Had Arizona lost, they would have fallen 3½ games behind San Diego with a crucial three-game series in San Diego looming to close the regular season. Instead, the victory may have shifted momentum in the Diamondbacks’ favor.

Manager Torey Lovullo described the win as a potential catalyst.

“We kept plowing away at it, and it was a great win,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “We know what was going on around us. We haven’t been playing great baseball, and to win a game like that today is, in my opinion, one of those catalyst type of games that pushes you forward and gets you ready for the next day.”

    Ninth-Inning Drama Unfolds

The rally began in the eighth inning when Jordan Lawlar launched a two-run homer to cut the Marlins’ lead to 7-5. In the ninth, Miami closer Pete Fairbanks walked Gabriel Moreno to start the inning. Fairbanks threw one pitch to Geraldo Perdomo before exiting with an injury, bringing Jack Ralston into the game.

Perdomo laid down a bunt to advance pinch-runner Tommy Troy to second base, setting the stage for Carroll. During the extended warm-up period for Ralston, Carroll prepared a specific approach.

“I had a lot of confidence Perdomo was going to do his job,” Carroll said. “So I had an idea that there would be a runner on second, and was just kind of thinking through his pitches and what he might be likely to go with.”

With first base open, Carroll stayed patient, hunting a pitch in the middle of the zone. On a 2-1 count, Ralston left a splitter up, and Carroll crushed it to right field for the game-ending home run.

    Overcoming a Prolonged Slump

The home run was a significant moment for Carroll, who has been grinding through a difficult stretch at the plate while managing a lower back issue. Entering the at-bat, he was just 8-for-59 (.136) in his previous 65 plate appearances. Lovullo praised the outfielder’s resilience and commitment.

“We know what Corbin’s been grinding through,” Lovullo said. “We watch it every single day, you guys included. But he continues to fight, and he commits. He commits to what he’s going to do in the box. He commits to being present and engaged in the box, he commits to being a great teammate and coming through, and it was a good moment for him.”

    Carroll Unaware of Padres Result

In a testament to his singular focus, Carroll revealed after the game that he was unaware the Padres had won earlier in the night.

“Honestly, I didn’t know they won,” Carroll said. “I didn’t know they won today. I missed that one.”

The hanging splitter, however, he did not miss. The walk-off keeps Arizona within striking distance in the Wild Card race and provides a much-needed confidence boost heading into the final stretch of the season.
