Nearly seven months after Nancy Guthrie disappeared from her home in Tucson, Arizona, the investigation into the 84-year-old mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie remains active. Authorities have not classified the case as cold and continue to pursue several leads that could help explain her disappearance.

FBI releases new images in Nancy Guthrie search

Nancy Guthrie was reported missing on February 1 after she failed to attend a virtual church service. Investigators later began treating the case as an apparent abduction, drawing national attention.

A $1 million reward remains available for information that could help authorities locate Nancy or produce a breakthrough in the investigation.

NewsNation senior national correspondent Brian Entin, who has closely followed the case, said the scale of the ongoing effort is unusual. FBI agents and local detectives reportedly remain assigned to the investigation full time, while investigators continue meeting regularly to review new information and evidence.

That sustained commitment has left Entin optimistic that the case could eventually be solved. He has also highlighted advances in forensic technology, including DNA testing, as a potential turning point.

“I really still feel that there’s going to be a resolution and that [detectives are] going to solve it. I just know through my sources how many people are working behind the scenes,” he told Us magazine.

DNA evidence recovered from inside Nancy’s home remains among the most closely monitored evidence in the case. Investigators have been analyzing biological material that could potentially indicate another person’s involvement.

Although some testing has not produced a usable profile, advances in forensic science could eventually make it possible to interpret evidence that cannot be fully analyzed today.

Clues that could help solve the disappearance

Surveillance footage is another important part of the investigation. Video recorded near Nancy’s home showed a masked individual close to a doorbell camera around the time she disappeared.

Determining who the person was, how they arrived at the property and where they went afterward could help investigators establish a clearer timeline.

Authorities have also released ransom communications linked to the case. One message reportedly demanded millions of dollars in cryptocurrency, while another claimed Nancy had died and included information about where her body had allegedly been left. Investigators have not publicly identified a suspect or person of interest.

The discovery of human remains in the Tucson desert also prompted speculation because of the location’s proximity to Nancy’s home. Authorities, however, said there was no indication the remains belonged to her, and investigators later determined that they were not connected to her disappearance.

Such discoveries are not unusual in southern Arizona. The Sonoran Desert is vast and presents significant challenges for searches and identification because of extreme heat, flash flooding, animals and difficult terrain.

Pima County receives numerous sets of unidentified remains each year, many of which are believed to involve people who died while attempting to cross the border.

Until authorities determine what happened, Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance remains an active investigation. A single new clue could still provide the answer her family has been waiting for.
