However when it by no means arrived, the soldiers repurposed it – and since then, it served as a reminder that they had been residing on borrowed time.
“We died collectively, as soon as earlier than – Arthur, me, Danny Whizz-Bang, Billy Thorne and John,” Tommy reminisces. “We had been lower off from the retreat, no bullets left, ready for the Prussian calvary come to complete us off.
“And whereas we waited, Jeremiah mentioned we must always sing, ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’. However we had been spared. The enemy by no means got here. And all of us agreed that the whole lot after that…was additional.”

Knight mentioned he ‘had this thought from the start’ about what united the blokes in Peaky Blinders, earlier than revealing some extra particulars concerning the origin of the ‘within the bleak midwinter’ line that viewers ‘by no means noticed’.
“All of them got here up out of the bottom and had been in a spot in no man’s land the place they’d no probability,” he mentioned. “They had been undoubtedly going to die. And they also sang ‘In The Bleak Midwinter’.
“We by no means see this, however that is what occurred. They sang after which they get rescued – fully miraculously, rescued. And as they’re rescued they are saying to one another, ‘Any further, the whole lot is a bonus. We died then, now we do what we would like – we do no matter we would like, as a result of we had been already lifeless’. And that is the factor that type of motivates them from then on.”
