  • Carnegie Mellon Officials Condemn Professor’s Viral Social Media Posts

Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) is facing renewed controversy after social media posts by associate professor Uju Anya resurfaced online, prompting university condemnation, faculty doxxing, and heightened campus security measures. The posts, which include derogatory language toward public figures and a 2021 exchange containing a racial slur, have ignited debate over academic freedom, institutional responsibility, and online harassment.

    Viral Posts Trigger University Response

The controversy escalated on September 10 when X user @TheWuhanClan shared a screenshot of a 2021 conversation following the death of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh. In the exchange, Anya allegedly wrote, “Die first, white man,” according to TribLIVE. Additional screenshots, allegedly from Anya’s now-deactivated X account, showed posts criticizing Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk with derogatory language.

The posts were amplified by the X account Libs of TikTok, run by far-right influencer Chaya Raichik. Elon Musk, owner of X through his company SpaceXAI, also shared a post referencing Anya, stating, “This is a real professor at Carnegie Mellon University …”

University Issues Three Statements, Confirms Doxxing and Security Concerns

On September 14, CMU released three separate statements addressed to the campus community. The messages were authored by:

    • President Farnam Jahanian and Provost James Garrett Jr.
    • Cassidy Sugimoto, dean of Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences
    • Adam van Compernolle, interim head of the Department of Languages, Cultures and Applied Linguistics (LCAL)

All three statements expressed concern over the content of Anya’s social media activity. Jahanian and Garrett confirmed that members of the languages department had been doxxed and had received an “influx of threatening messages that leave them feeling distressed and unsafe,” though university police had not identified any credible threats. As a precaution, at least one class was moved online, according to The Tartan, CMU’s student newspaper. The LCAL department also paused its conversation group meetings.

Regarding personnel actions, university officials stated policy prohibited sharing specific information about Anya but confirmed they were “taking swift action in accordance with their processes.” Anya is currently on voluntary professional leave through summer 2027 and is not teaching classes this academic year. USA TODAY reached out to Anya for comment but received an automatic reply indicating she is on sabbatical and not regularly checking email.

CMU Condemns Language as Violation of Community Standards

In their joint statement, Jahanian and Garrett emphasized that while the university encourages free speech, they “strongly reject language that is hateful and disparages or calls for the harm of others.” They said Anya’s posts used expletives, racial slurs, and derogatory language that “demeaned, dehumanized and intimidated” in a way that violated CMU’s community standards.

The statements referenced the department’s policy on community responsibilities, which prohibits harassment, discrimination, and disrespect. Jahanian and Garrett noted the policy applies to both on-campus and personal off-campus communication “where there is a reasonable perception or expectation that we are acting as representatives of LCAL, Dietrich College, and/or Carnegie Mellon University.”

Previous Controversy in 2022 Over Queen Elizabeth Comments

This is not the first time Anya’s social media activity has drawn public backlash. In September 2022, a post about Queen Elizabeth II sparked outrage. In a screenshot allegedly from her account, Anya wrote: “I heard the chief monarch of a thieving raping genocidal empire is finally dying. May her pain be excruciating.”

At the time, CMU officials responded on Facebook, stating the university did not condone the “offensive and objectionable message” posted to Anya’s personal account. They added: “Free expression is core to the mission of higher education, however, the views she shared absolutely do not represent the values of the institution, nor the standard of discourse we seek to foster.”

The 2022 incident prompted competing open letters. Students published a letter supporting Anya in The Tartan. A separate faculty letter, signed by scholars from Yale University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Pittsburgh, Stony Brook University, Northwestern University, and University of South Florida, criticized CMU’s response. The letter garnered 4,119 signatures from staff, faculty, and independent individuals.

The faculty authors wrote: “We ask university officials at CMU to consider what harms are both elided from critical discourse and reproduced in the classroom when they choose to stand on the side of the oppressor. Universities must be intentional about how they respond to public discourse and critically evaluate who they are targeting and/or harming by their response or lack of response. We call on universities to stop being reactive when issues of structural oppression are called to their attention and take seriously its impacts on staff, faculty, students, and families.”

The letter also questioned what authors described as a disparity in the university’s defense of free speech, citing strong support from Jahanian for the First Amendment rights of Richard Grenell, a CMU-affiliated senior fellow and former Trump official accused of publishing antisemitic and sinophobic conspiracy theories.

Ongoing Tensions Highlight Campus Speech Debates

The recurring controversies underscore persistent tensions at U.S. universities over the boundaries of faculty speech, institutional accountability, and the safety of community members targeted by online harassment. As CMU navigates the current fallout, the case continues to draw national attention to how academic institutions balance free expression with community standards in the digital age.

  • Nemours Delaware Psychiatrist Resigns Following Lindsay Clancy Testimony

A psychiatrist affiliated with Delaware’s Nemours Children’s Health resigned after testifying for the prosecution in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, a health system official confirmed.

Avram Mack evaluated Clancy before the trial and testified in a Plymouth, Massachusetts, courtroom on Aug. 21. He also testified remotely via Zoom on Aug. 24.

“Avram Mack is no longer employed by Nemours Children’s Health, he resigned on Monday, August 24th,” Nemours spokesperson Shelley Meadowcroft said in an email.

The Patriot Ledger, which is covering the trial, reported that Mack told jurors he believed Clancy understood that what she was doing to her children was wrong.

Psychiatrist testifies about Clancy’s mental health

Clancy is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children: 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan.

Mack testified that he saw no evidence of psychosis in Clancy’s medical records and that he would not have diagnosed her as bipolar, according to The Patriot Ledger, part of the USA TODAY Network.

Clancy’s defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, reportedly had a contentious cross-examination of Mack over the definition of “postpartum depression.”

The jury began deliberations Aug. 27 but was dismissed for the weekend.

    Detroit History and Album Legacy

Wonder has a deep history with the Fox Theatre. As a young Motown artist in the 1960s, he performed frequently at the venue as part of the label’s Motortown Revues. His last performance at the historic downtown theater was in 1995, making this return a significant homecoming for the Michigan-born star.

“Songs in the Key of Life” stands as Wonder’s defining work — a commercial and critical triumph that produced enduring hits such as “Sir Duke,” “Isn’t She Lovely,” and “I Wish.” A previous 40th anniversary tour in 2014 and 2015 brought the album celebration to the Palace of Auburn Hills and Joe Louis Arena, but the 50th anniversary trek marks his first return to the Fox Theatre in over three decades.

  • Detroit Red Wings Name Shawn Horcoff Interim GM While Search Continues

The Detroit Red Wings have appointed Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager, effective Tuesday, Sept. 15, 2026, as the franchise continues its search for a permanent successor to Steve Yzerman. The announcement arrives just two days before the team is scheduled to open training camp at Little Caesars Arena.

    Horcoff Steps Into Leadership Role

Horcoff, 47, brings deep institutional knowledge to the position. He has spent the past six seasons as the organization’s director of player development and three seasons as assistant director of player personnel. Since Yzerman vacated the general manager role in mid-July, Horcoff has been managing daily hockey operations duties.

Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch emphasized the stability Horcoff provides during the transition.

“As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity,” Red Wings governor and CEO Chris Ilitch said in a statement. “His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization.”

    Immediate Priority: Simon Edvinsson Contract

Horcoff’s most pressing task is finalizing a new contract for restricted free agent defenseman Simon Edvinsson. A deal completed by end of day on Sept. 15 could still be structured for eight years; after that date, NHL rules limit teams to a maximum of seven years when re-signing their own players.

    Yzerman Transitions to Advisory Role

The team also confirmed that Yzerman will officially move into a senior advisor position reporting to Ilitch. This transition comes as Detroit aims to end a playoff drought that reached an active NHL-record 10 consecutive seasons last spring.

Search for Permanent GM Remains Active

Ilitch indicated the search for a permanent head of hockey operations has drawn substantial interest from around the league.

“Our search has attracted significant interest in the head of hockey operations position from respected leaders across the industry, and several of those candidates, including Shawn, remain under consideration for the permanent role,” Ilitch said. “Identifying and hiring the right leader is essential to our franchise’s future, and we remain committed to being deliberate and thorough in this process. We’re grateful for our players, staff, and fans for their support as we work toward this pivotal hire.”

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday celebrates “the social and economic achievements of American workers” and is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday “to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America’s strength, prosperity, and well-being.“

  • Snoop Dogg Is Hiring an Ice Cream Taster for $10,000

Love ice cream? Snoop Dogg may have the perfect job for you.

The rapper, entrepreneur and Dr. Bombay co-founder is searching worldwide for an international ice cream taster. The sweet position pays $10,000 a month and is open to applicants around the globe.

Snoop Dogg is hiring an international ice cream taster

Snoop announced the job opening Aug. 27, saying Dr. Bombay is looking beyond the United States for new flavor inspiration as the brand expands. The company, launched with his son Cordell Broadus in 2023, has partnered with hiring platform Deel to find someone who can sample frozen treats, identify emerging trends and help shape future products.

According to Dr. Bombay, the company’s story also traces back to Snoop’s father, Vernell Varnado, who was raised on a dairy farm in Mississippi.

“Today, we are going global, baby. And we need you to help us find new flavors,” Varnado said in a promotional video.

How to apply for Dr. Bombay’s ice cream taster job

Dr. Bombay is seeking the coldest candidate for its international ice cream taster role. Applicants can apply through Deel’s website and will be asked to provide personal information, social media handles and details about their ice cream experience.

The application also asks candidates about their passion for frozen treats. One question asks, “How much ice cream do you eat per week?” Another challenges applicants to create a social media post about a food or flavor combination they are currently obsessed with.

Snoop Dogg launched Snoopsicles for summer

In June, Snoop Dogg released his first popsicle. Called Snoopsicles, the frozen treat comes in a combination flavor described as “razzed out,” featuring raspberry, cherry and lime sherbet.

The packaging says the popsicles are made with real fruit juice and contain no artificial colors. They are available at select Costco locations, with a 24-pack priced at $14.99.
