Ben Stokes Joins Adelaide Strikers for Big Bash League Season

Former England captain Ben Stokes has signed for Adelaide Strikers for the 2026-27 season of the T20 Big Bash League.

The 35-year-old announced his retirement from international cricket in June during the third and final Test of England’s 2-1 home series defeat by New Zealand.

Stokes played 122 Tests, 114 one-day internationals and 43 T20 internationals for England. He scored a superb 84 in the 2019 World Cup final against New Zealand as England dramatically won the tournament for the first time.

“I’m really excited to be joining the Adelaide Strikers for BBL 16,” said Stokes.

“I’ve always enjoyed playing in Australia, and when the opportunity came up to join the Strikers it was one I couldn’t pass up.”

“Adelaide Oval is an incredible place to play cricket, the Big Bash is a fantastic competition and the Strikers have an exciting group, so I’m looking forward to meeting the players, getting stuck in and contributing to a successful season.”

“I can’t wait to get started, create some special memories with the group and give Strikers fans plenty to cheer about.”

Adelaide Strikers said Stokes, who had a brief spell with fellow Big Bash League side Melbourne Renegades in 2015, would be available for the entire BBL 16 campaign, which begins in December.

“Ben is one of the greatest all-rounders the game has seen, a proven match-winner and a competitor who thrives under pressure,” said Adelaide Strikers head coach Tim Paine, whose side start their BBL season against Sydney Thunder on 16 December.

“We’re thrilled to have a player of his ability join our squad and can’t wait to see him put on a show in BBL 16.”

McLaren’s Newest Upgrades: What They Reveal Ahead of the Italian Grand Prix

McLaren’s Zandvoort upgrades helped deliver back-to-back wins

Following its all-new floor, wakeboards and floor slots introduced in Hungary, McLaren brought further performance upgrades to Zandvoort. The latest package included a new rear wing, engine cover updates, diffuser tweaks and revised front wheel rims.

“The items aren’t linked as a package,” explained McLaren’s technical director Neil Houldey of the Zandvoort parts. “They all provide aero performance as individual components and don’t need each other to perform.”

The two consecutive upgrade packages proved highly effective, helping Lando Norris secure back-to-back Grand Prix victories, with both wins coming from pole position.

  • Stephen Curry Puts Warriors Contract Extension on Hold but Sends Clear Message About His Future

Stephen Curry Puts Warriors Contract Extension on Hold but Sends Clear Message About His Future

Stephen Curry has reached a pivotal stage of his NBA career, with every contract decision potentially shaping the final chapter of his time with the Golden State Warriors. Still, his latest comments made clear that a new deal is not his immediate priority.

The 38-year-old became eligible over the weekend for a two-year contract extension worth up to $136.7 million. The agreement could keep Curry under contract with Golden State through the summer of 2029, but he is not rushing to sign.

“There’s no question I want to be here the rest of my career, and I’m pretty sure that’s going to happen,” Curry told NBC Sports Bay Area.

Curry is entering the final season of his current contract and is scheduled to earn $62.6 million in 2026-27. Rather than allowing extension negotiations to dominate the conversation ahead of training camp, however, he wants the Warriors focused on preparing for the season.

“The deal and the contract stuff will happen at the right time, and we’re not letting it be a distraction from our preparation for the season,” Curry said.

Warriors face bigger questions than Curry’s contract

Golden State’s most pressing issue is not whether Curry wants to remain with the franchise. The bigger question is whether the Warriors can build another serious playoff team around their longtime star.

Golden State missed the postseason again last year after losing to Phoenix in the play-in tournament. It was the second time in three seasons that the Warriors failed to reach the playoffs.

Curry also appeared in only 41 games during an injury-disrupted campaign. His comments therefore focused as much on returning to the court and competing as they did on his contract.

“Hopefully we’re healthy and we just have a chance to show what we’re capable of, myself included, after missing so many games last year,” Curry said.

The Warriors continue to believe their championship window has not fully closed, and Curry appears to share that outlook.

Stephen Curry focused on Year 18 with Golden State

“The goal stays the same,” Curry said. “Extension stuff, we’ll figure that out at the right time.“

“But I’m ready for Year 18,” Curry added. “It’s kind of crazy that it’s been this long, and I’m still trying to play at a very high level to help us win, and I’ll be able to do my job.”

Curry made the comments during the Workday Charity Classic in Palo Alto, an event benefiting Eat. Learn. Play., the foundation he operates with his wife, Ayesha.

Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy and executive vice president Kirk Lacob were also in attendance, making the setting particularly fitting.

Curry does not sound like a player weighing his options or preparing for a dramatic departure. Instead, he appears willing to let the contract situation resolve itself while he focuses on extending the competitive life of the only NBA team he has ever played for.

  • Pakistan vs England: Shahid Afridi Calls Seven Changes ‘most shocking decision ever’

Pakistan vs England: Shahid Afridi Calls Seven Changes ‘most shocking decision ever’

Pakistan have made seven changes to their squad during the Test series against England, with five players dropped after featuring in the matches so far: Muhammad Rizwan, Imam-ul-Haq, Salman Ali Agha, Ali Usman and Khurram Shahzad. Aamir Jamal and Muhammad Awais Jafar have been sent home without playing.

The seven call-ups include batters Saim Ayub and Abdullah Fazal, both of whom have previous Test experience. They join five uncapped players selected for the Pakistan squad.

    Pakistan name seven replacements

Spin-bowling all-rounder Arafat Minhas, left-arm seamer Mohammed Imran Jr, wicketkeeper Said Baig, and all-rounders Mohammad Imran and Razaullah have all received call-ups.

Former Pakistan captain and Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Ramiz Raja criticised the changes during an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live: “I’m trying to convince myself this is all OK, but it is not.”

It just shows Pakistan cricket has hit a panic button.

Pakistan are scheduled to meet King Charles at Clarence House this week. The engagement was arranged before the series against England began and is expected to go ahead despite the controversy that nearly brought the tour to an early end during the second Test.

At lunch on the first day of that match, the PCB threatened to cancel the remainder of the Test and the tour after Sky broadcast an interview with the sons of Imran Khan.

Imran Khan, the former Pakistan captain and prime minister, has been imprisoned for three years on corruption charges, which he denies.

Pakistan ultimately completed the Test. Captain Babar Azam and head coach Sarfaraz both denied having any knowledge of a planned boycott.

  • Tsitsipas Speaks Out on Kyrgios’s Positive Cocaine Test: “I’m not going to cover for him when I know the truth”

Tsitsipas Speaks Out on Kyrgios’s Positive Cocaine Test: “I’m not going to cover for him when I know the truth”

Stefanos Tsitsipas said he was not surprised by reports that Nick Kyrgios had been suspended from tennis after testing positive for cocaine following a tournament in Mallorca. Kyrgios could face a suspension of up to four years.

Tsitsipas discussed the Kyrgios case after defeating Artur Fils in the first round of the US Open.

“To be honest, it was something to be expected… Although I’m surprised it took so long to become known,”

the Greek player said of the controversial Australian.

“To be completely honest, I was already aware of this before the announcement. I knew it myself”.

    Tsitsipas added:

“What can I tell you? I’ll simply tell you the truth. I knew all of this before any announcement was made and, when I saw it on social media, I thought: “Here we go.” To be honest, I was expecting it,”

Tsitsipas, who called Kyrgios a “bully” after their intense and controversial Wimbledon match in 2022, said he had previously heard about behavior involving the Australian away from the tennis courts.

“I knew those were things that happened off the tennis courts. I can assure you of that.”

    He continued:

“I’m not going to try to cover for someone when I know the truth. I consider myself a kind person to everyone, but these were behaviors I became personally aware of on the tour; I heard other people from that same environment tell me similar things,”

    Tsitsipas said.

Nick Kyrgios admits cocaine violation after Mallorca test

Kyrgios recently acknowledged that he had tested positive for cocaine in an anti-doping control in Mallorca. The 33-year-old said the past two years of injuries had affected him physically and mentally.

“Recently I tested positive for cocaine in an anti-doping control in Mallorca. I made a serious mistake and I take full responsibility for it. I am not going to make excuses, but I want to provide context for the situation I was in. The last two years, marked by injuries, have taken an enormous toll, both physically and mentally. My body was not able to respond to what my mind demanded of it, and accepting that I am approaching the end of my career has been more difficult than I ever imagined,”

    Kyrgios wrote on Instagram.

Nick Kyrgios speaks about mental health struggles

In a 2022 interview with Australian broadcaster Nine, Kyrgios discussed his long-standing mental health problems, alcohol and drug use, and self-harm.

“Balance is something I find hard to deal with. I have always been like that since I was a child. Matches were always a roller coaster.”

“I even ended up cutting and burning myself in some pretty fucked-up shit”

    He also said:

““I really try hard. Sometimes it’s a struggle for me. Some days I wake up and come to the courts or I wake up and just don’t want to leave my room. I deal with normal human issues, but I’m also proud of myself. I go out, keep my head down, and play well. It’s not easy to do it week after week”… I’m two very different people on and off the court,”

Kyrgios described his mental health problems in 2019 as severe.

“They were very serious… to the point that I ended up self-harming my arm… and that is not okay”.

    He explained:

“I guess I pushed away everyone who cared about me and I wasn’t communicating. I just shut out real life and was trying to handle and confront my problems head-on”

Kyrgios said the emotional pain led him to:

“cut and burn myself in some pretty fucked-up shit.”

    He added:

“I felt like I was disappointing people all the time. I felt worthless and hated my life at one point,”

“I guess I pushed away everyone who cared about me and I wasn’t communicating. I just shut out real life and was trying to manage and tackle my problems head-on. I was abusing alcohol and drugs a lot, and that got out of control,”

Kyrgios recalls suicidal thoughts in 2019

In February 2020, Kyrgios spoke publicly about the crisis he had experienced the previous year.

“I had suicidal thoughts and was, literally, struggling to get out of bed and play in front of millions of people. I was alone, depressed, negative, abusing alcohol and drugs that drove me away from family and friends. I couldn’t talk to anyone or trust anyone.”

Kyrgios said he overcame the crisis with support from his family and by changing his daily routine.

“adopting healthier habits such as diet, sleeping well, trying to train a little more”

    He added:

“Now I hardly drink, I literally have a glass of wine with dinner,”

The Australian also described the pressure of being viewed primarily as a tennis personality rather than as a person.

“really didn’t care who I was as a human being, only just a tennis player… the crazy tennis player,”

He said the experience had been:

    “exhausting”

and acknowledged that he had felt:

    “used.”

Kyrgios described his relationship with tennis as complicated:

“I love the sport; I’m a great student of the game and sometimes I enjoy watching tennis. But I like it only up to a point. It’s my life and I’ve devoted hours and hours to it that I’m never going to get back”.

Kyrgios cited mental health issues in abuse case

In 2022, Kyrgios’ legal representatives told an Australian court that the tennis player had mental health problems while seeking to have an abuse charge dismissed.

The EFE agency reported that Kyrgios faced one count of common assault for allegedly abusing his former girlfriend, Chiara Passari, in December 2021.

The pair reportedly had a heated argument over Kyrgios’ alleged infidelity, and police intervened to calm the situation.

  • Who Was Pamela Cisneros, the Woman Shot Dead by New York Police in Times Square After Killing One Person and Injuring Another?

Who Was Pamela Cisneros, the Woman Shot Dead by New York Police in Times Square After Killing One Person and Injuring Another?

A quiet afternoon in New York’s Times Square turned into a deadly attack on Monday, August 31, when a woman armed with two knives attacked two people while shouting, “I’m going to kill you!”

At around 4:30 p.m., the 49-year-old woman, identified by police as Pamela Cisneros of Queens, caused panic among residents and tourists in one of Manhattan’s busiest areas. She reportedly pulled a knife from a shopping bag and stabbed two people in the abdomen within about 20 seconds: a 68-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman.

The man had just exited the subway and was waiting to cross the street with his wife. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital and remained in stable condition, according to the New York Police Department. The second victim, a 32-year-old woman, suffered more serious abdominal injuries and later died at the same hospital.

After the stabbing, Cisneros continued along the street until several police officers surrounded her and ordered her to drop the weapons. Police said she refused and threatened to attack them.

Officers first used stun guns, but they were ineffective. Police then opened fire as Cisneros moved closer to them, saying they feared for their lives. She was taken to a hospital, where she later died.

Times Square attacker had mental health history

At a press conference in Times Square alongside the police commissioner, Mayor Zohran Mamdani said: “I want to thank the officers who intervened and prevented a horrific attack from being even worse.” Tisch added: “Our officers did exactly what they are trained to do.”

Police ruled out terrorism as a motive and said in a press release that Cisneros had “a history of mental health incidents.”

The attack occurred during New York’s rush hour in one of the city’s busiest tourist districts. Videos showing police shooting the attacker spread widely across social media.

  • The Future of Messi: Miami Contract Through 2028, One Last Ballon d’Or and Life Beyond Football?

The Future of Messi: Miami Contract Through 2028, One Last Ballon d’Or and Life Beyond Football?

Leo Messi remains at the top of his game despite stepping away from Argentina’s national team. He scored four goals for Inter Miami on Sunday and is currently Major League Soccer’s leading scorer with 18 goals.

The performance underlined that Messi is still fully active on the football pitch. The bigger question concerns his state of mind and desire to continue—factors that will ultimately determine when he says “enough”, particularly following the loss of his father, Jorge.

Messi’s Inter Miami contract runs through 2028

Messi is under contract with Inter Miami until the end of 2028. In his case, however, the agreement is only a formal detail. He is expected to retire whenever he chooses, and the club would accept that decision while offering him a role in its ownership and wider structure if he wants to remain connected to Inter Miami.

Sportingly, Messi still has major objectives ahead as he looks to add to his record haul of 48 trophies, excluding individual awards. Inter Miami are the defending MLS champions, and Messi is currently competing for the 2026 MLS title.

He could also be in contention for a ninth Ballon d’Or, with the award scheduled for October. That same month, Messi is due to receive the Prince of Asturias Award in Oviedo.

Potential challenges for Messi in 2027 and 2028

If Messi’s body and motivation continue to support his career, he could face several more challenges in 2027. These include the shortened MLS season running through June, as United States soccer moves toward the European football calendar, followed by the 2027-28 MLS campaign.

Inter Miami could also compete in the 2028 Concacaf Champions Cup, a prestigious and previously unattained title that would carry particular importance for the club. The objectives remain in place if Messi decides he wants to continue playing.

Messi’s business interests and football legacy

Messi will turn 40 on June 24, 2027. Beyond football, he has a long life ahead with his family and a wide-ranging business portfolio. He represents numerous brands and has interests including a wine label and energy drinks.

His family and inner circle have also focused on extending his legacy beyond his playing career. The clearest example is Messi’s purchase this year of Unió Esportiva Cornellà, a Catalan club competing in the Tercera Federación.

The acquisition is intended to preserve the Messi name in football. The club is currently a small “toy”, but Messi hopes to grow it through his own management and that of his team in the coming years.

Messi is also expected to live in Catalonia after retiring. He still owns his home in Castelldefels, where he will likely spend time with his family, oversee his businesses and develop his football legacy from another perspective.

That future would come in addition to the role he is certain to hold as an enduring ambassador for Argentine football. Long live the “other” Leo.
