Apple is reportedly testing new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models equipped with touch-enabled OLED displays, running macOS 27.1 ahead of a planned release later this year. The information comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who indicates the laptops are now firmly scheduled for a 2026 launch.
macOS 27.1 Testing Underway
According to Gurman’s latest report, the high-end MacBook Pro prototypes are currently being validated with macOS 27.1. The operating system update is slated for public release in late October, with the first developer beta expected to arrive in the coming days. This software timeline aligns with a hardware debut before the end of 2026.
Release Window Narrows
Gurman previously suggested a launch window of late 2026 or early 2027. His updated reporting now places these OLED MacBook Pro models within a list of products arriving “later this year,” signaling increased confidence in a 2026 release.
Expected Specifications and Design Changes
The rumored feature set for the first-generation OLED MacBook Pro models includes:
- M5 Pro and M5 Max chip options
- A thinner chassis design
- Dynamic Island replacing the current display notch
- Touch-enabled OLED display technology
Positioning Above Standard Models
These OLED-equipped MacBook Pros are expected to carry premium pricing and sit above the regular 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro lineup. The standard models are anticipated to transition to M7 Pro and M7 Max chips next year, creating a clear product tier distinction.
Clarification on Branding Rumors
Earlier reports from Macworld suggested these devices might adopt “MacBook Ultra” branding. However, that same report incorrectly predicted the foldable iPhone would be named “iPhone Ultra” (it is reportedly called “iPhone Duo”), casting some doubt on the MacBook Ultra moniker.
